Spicy and medicinal herbs

Highlander (knotweed): description, therapeutic properties and contraindications

Unlike many other plants widely used by herbalists, the healing properties of knotweed herb are scientifically confirmed, therefore it is included in the list of medicinal plants. Hard, long, resistant to attempts to damage them knotweed stems can often be seen on hiking trails, next to the plantain. The highlander bird is so widespread in our temperate continental climate that it is considered a weed. True, he, unlike the plantain, has only a pronounced diuretic effect, but scientific medicine does not confirm its other therapeutic properties. The same effect is often associated with knotweed contraindications, since artificially stimulating the work of the kidneys is not important for all their diseases.

Sporysh or mountaineer is one of the useful weeds - like plantain, St. John's wort, many other wild herbs. Interestingly, the English name of the highlander bird can literally be translated as “knotted grass”. A very accurate analogy, because its long and hard stems themselves are divided into segments similar to the phalanges of the fingers, and its flowers more resemble pink nodules at the junction between them. As a result, the general view of the grass knotweed resembles a long green rope with knots.

Composition and healing properties of knotweed grass

Strong knotweed grass stems are very resistant to abrasion, which is why they decorate the roadsides as often as the plantain. It is “omnivorous” in terms of soil composition requirements. According to official medicine, the use of knotweed herb is limited to its diuretic properties, but herbalists and healers use it much more actively. The composition of the grass knotweed includes the following components.

  • Vitamins. In particular, we are talking about vitamins A, C, E and K. In practical application, such a set means that the knotweed helps to improve eyesight, increase immunity, improve regeneration and protective properties of the mucous membranes and skin (due to the largely similar effect of vitamins A and C) stabilize blood clotting.
  • Bioflavonoids. This is the name of an extensive class of compounds of plant origin, some of which have not yet been studied. Plants, they serve as a means of protection from pests and stimulants of metabolism, natural dyes for leaves and flowers. In the human body, they play the role of antioxidants - the defenders of cells from free radicals (fragments of molecules resulting from the occurrence of oxidative reactions). Currently, it is common practice to combine bioflavonoids with the name “vitamin P” and prescribe it to reduce oxidative stress (the destructive action of the above-mentioned free radicals) throughout the body. But in addition to combating the "wrong" metabolic products, bioflavonoids strengthen the capillary walls most exposed to free radicals, eliminating edema. Thanks to them, treatment with grass, mountaineer bird reduces the intensity of allergic and inflammatory reactions throughout the body, has an antiseptic effect, has a positive effect on the tone of the smooth muscles of the heart, bladder and other organs formed by it. They are mainly responsible for the diuretic properties of knotweed herb decoction. Separate bioflavonoids have other effects besides those indicated - analgesic, coagulative, choleretic, hepatoprotective.
  • Tannins . These are derivatives of bioflavonoids with more pronounced protective properties. The lion's share of tannins is moderately poisonous, not only for fungi and other natural enemies of plants, but also for the human body. However, just partial toxicity provides them with the properties of weak natural antibiotics that can overcome most infections, as well as aseptic inflammations in all tissues, including bone, vascular and nervous. In direct contact with the tissues of malignant tumors, tannins exhibit a pronounced antitumor effect. If contact is mediated, their constant presence in the blood can significantly slow down its growth and decay, retard the development of metastatic (secondary) foci.
  • Coumarins. Most often, they are indirect anticoagulants, but also demonstrate the properties of antispasmodics and anti-cancer agents. Some of them are poisonous enough for a person to cause pathological bleeding, as in hemophilia, or skin burns (topically, when in contact with them) due to its pronounced photosensitization (increased sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation).
  • Saponins. In principle, saponins are a component rather harmful than useful because it is a natural soap basis. Saponins are not absorbed by the body, but irritation of the walls of the stomach and intestines leads to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In other words, their presence in the grass knotweed or other plants like quinoa can have a therapeutic effect on constipation or, for example, food poisoning. That is, when a complete evacuation of the contents of the digestive system is necessary. However, knotweed in the grass is not so much saponins, and the use of quinoa with a similar goal is more relevant.

In all parts of the grass knotweed also present silicic acid - infrequent, but useful "guests" in the composition of the plants. Silicic acids are valuable to the human body in that they are involved in the vital activity of connective and horny cells (nails, hair, skin) tissue, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. Their reception prevents the early aging of the musculoskeletal system, the deposition of cellulite on the buttocks in women and men, the development of varicose veins, including hemorrhoids, as one of its variants, and deep vein thrombosis.

Indications for use

Based on the chemical composition, the useful properties of the knotweed grass can really manifest itself in the treatment of many diseases.

  • Kidney stones. To stimulate the outflow of urine itself, as well as sand and small stones. But with large, mobile stones, the reception of any diuretics, including knotweed grass, is not indicated. First you need to carry out their crushing by ultrasound, and diuretics should be prescribed only after it - to remove the fragments obtained after crushing.
  • Arthritis. As well as age-related / infectious polyarthritis, osteochondrosis, myositis, due to the presence in the grass of knotweed tannins, vitamin A and silicic acids.
  • Cystitis Due to the sanitizing properties of the decoction and infusion of knotweed grass, as well as the ability of bioflavonoids in their composition to increase the tone of the bladder walls and excretory ducts.
  • Prostatitis However, only as a palliative. The knotweed grass improves kidney function, improves the condition of the bladder and the flow of urine from it. But you need to understand that with adenoma and prostatitis problems with it arise due to mechanical compression of the urethra with tissues of an enlarged prostate gland. So the diseases of the urinary system are secondary here, and the benefit of knotweed for men is limited, since the knotweed does not seem to affect the condition of the prostate gland.
  • Face rash. Youth acne, comedones, enlarged pores, acne and others, as cosmetologists delicately express, skin imperfections. Traditional medicine believes that knives from the herb knotweed help with infections (both the skin itself and the wound cavities, endoderm, and subcutaneous fat). However, science does not confirm the presence of a pronounced therapeutic effect in such cases.
  • Obesity and overweight. Due to the ability of silicic acids to slow down the pathological deposition of cellulite. The medicinal properties of the grass knotweed can manifest when losing weight and in that it helps to remove excess fluid from the body, “drying” the fat mass and visually improving the result of the diet (which is very uplifting to the “fasting”, keeps them from collapsing). In addition, the grass of knotweed maintains muscle tone, which in the case of any hunger, including dietary, “eaten” by the body twice as fast as fat reserves. Actual and its beneficial effects on the state and the work of the heart with the vessels.
  • Respiratory Disease. As a febrifuge and anti-inflammatory, rich in vitamin C, some other acids and tannins. Knotweed extract makes dry cough wet, helps relieve symptoms of sore throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, rhinitis.
  • Benign tumors. Due to the presence of bioflavonoids and tannins, some of which have a cytostatic effect. True, here it is necessary to clarify that neither traditional medicine nor official oncology classifies the herb knotweed as potent cancer drugs. It is considered a component of a rather preventive, especially in regard to the prevention of the incidence of cancer of the liver, kidney, gall and bladder.

The knotweed grass received a certain recognition in gynecology due to not only the ability to alleviate the symptoms of prostatitis, but also a positive effect in the treatment of edema during pregnancy and hormonal disorders, some types of infertility.

Interestingly, the grass knotweed, unlike most plants, is shown to receive even in the period of carrying a child - to improve blood circulation and kidney function, to reduce the brightness of the manifestations of toxicosis. Nevertheless, in the cases listed below, it is necessary to be careful with her or completely refuse to receive it.

  • With threats of miscarriage. It is worth refusing to take knotweed grass in the third trimester of pregnancy, with a threatened miscarriage at any time and after conception using IVF. Knotweed tones up the smooth muscles of the uterus, and therefore, may cause premature birth or increase the likelihood of losing a child.
  • For the period of lactation. Sporish grass is not shown when breastfeeding. All components in its composition freely penetrate into breast milk. Meanwhile, the lion’s share of them is not needed by the newborn or even dangerous for him (say, dehydration, since he does not drink anything but milk - even water).
  • With a number of pathologies. Some "healers" (non-medical) appointments like prostatitis, cancer, and skin infections are not recommended. This is not a strict contraindication. It’s just that in the case of them there is a risk that the time needed for the timely start of targeted and truly effective therapy will be spent on the ineffective treatment with a knotweed.
  • With kidney stones. Care should be taken when using knotweed as a diuretic and with urolithiasis. It all depends on the size of the stones. The movement of some of them, provoked by increased outflow of urine, can lead to acute blockage, rupture of the ureter and other complications that require urgent surgical intervention.

It goes without saying that taking knotweed grass extracts is strictly forbidden if the patient is allergic to any of the components in their composition or even just other substances of plant origin.

As for the question of how to brew the grass knotweed, then the most important thing is to remember that its alcohol tinctures are still not made (except from the root, and that is not often). The problem is that the return of valuable components when insisting on alcohol is extremely low - because of the particular stiffness of the stems. Yes, and a significant part of them is destroyed in such an environment, turning the alcohol tincture of knotweed into an infusion of bright green bitterness almost useless for the liver and kidneys. Because the knotweed is usually brewed or infused in hot / boiling water.

  • four whole stalks of knotweed grass,
  • half a liter of drinking water.

  1. Cut the stems of knotweed together with the leaves with a sharp knife, fold it into enameled dishes of the desired volume.
  2. Fill the raw material with prepared water and boil for half an hour under a lid, in a water bath.
  3. Then remove the almost ready decoction, let it cool without removing the lid, and fold to a colander to drain the knotweed grass. Bring the volume of broth to the original warm drinking water.

  • three tablespoons of cut grass knotweed,
  • a glass of boiling water
  • thermos with glass inner bulb.

  1. Fold the chopped knot of knotweed stalks into a pre-heated thermos, pour boiling water over it.
  2. Cover and let it sit for three hours, then strain.

At the same time, grassy mountaineer grass treatment is not limited to taking only its infusions and decoctions. Its fresh juice is also useful, which is extracted by grinding all the ground parts of a plant in a blender or food processor (nozzle for ground meat). After the obtained gruel is filtered and squeezed through gauze folded in several layers. Half a glass of fresh grass juice knotweed in a mixture with a teaspoon of honey well strengthens the immune system and eliminates infections. And directly, in the form of such a mass, the knotweed is applied locally, on sore joints or places of skin inflammation.

Where there is a fabulous grass-ant

Knotweed distributed almost throughout the temperate zone of the Eurasian continent, is not found only in the Arctic. The highlander is not afraid of trampling, grass-ants survive on airfields, stadiums, pastures, but it grows better near housing, in the garden and on the shore of the reservoir.

A variety of biologically active components of knotweed

The avian buckwheat contains flavonoid avikularin and flavonol quercetin, which are interesting and important components of medicinal raw materials from a biological point of view. Avikularin has hemostatic properties. Flavonol Quercetin from the Vitamin P group is an antioxidant known to doctors for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, diuretic and antihistamine properties.

The traditional ingredients of many plants are tannins. This is a group of compounds with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. The presence of silicic acid salts is a feature of the mountaineer's bird. Research on the biological role of the most common element on the planet continues. Results have already been obtained that prove the effect of silicon on the skin’s ability to regenerate and heal wounds as soon as possible. Compounds of silicic acid increase the elasticity and strength of the integuments of the body, tendons, bones, walls of blood vessels.

In the composition of the knotweed there are traces of essential oil, providing a healing and cleansing effect. Resins have disinfecting and wound healing effects.
