Pachistachis - care

Pachistachis is a shrub native to the rain forests of South and Central America, as well as India and the eastern part of Australia. So far, this plant has not received wide distribution among our gardeners, but those who still tried to grow pakhistahs, home care is called simple, and the result is superior to expectations.

Plant characteristics

At home, pahistahis is a perennial bush blooming from February to October. In our latitudes, flowering occurs only in the summer months. It grows not particularly fast, adding only 8-10 cm per year, but experienced flora lovers recommend paying much attention to the renewal and formation of the plant. Regular pruning allows you to grow a lush and richly flowering shrub. The shoots of the pachistachis are flat, upright, covered with oval elongated leaves.

Shrub reproduction

The reproduction of pachistachis can occur both with the help of cuttings, and with the help of seeds. The first method is the easiest and most accessible, and besides 2 months after the rooting of the cutting, the first flowers may appear.

Suitable for breeding stalk with two pairs of leaves. You can germinate it in a container with water, the main thing - the temperature is not lower than 22 ° C. The stalk can be rooted in the soil, but it must be very loose and the container covered with polyethylene. In the process it will need to be periodically aired.

Tip: plant a few rooted cuttings in one pot. As they grow, they will form a beautiful, voluminous crown.

Pachistachis yellow

The bright green of its glossy, corrugated due to the frequent veining of leaves, creates a beautiful contrast with the bright yellow ear, which most people take for a flower. In fact, it is only a bract from which pachistachis flowers appear. I must say, against the background of the beauty of this tropical shrub, they seem simple and inconspicuous. Long, narrow, white color, growing perpendicular to the ear, they resemble a long forked tongue. The flowering period is about 3 days, after which the flowers crumble, but the bright yellow bract - the main decoration of the plant, remains on it for several months.

Advice: a bush of pachistachis can stretch up to 1 meter and higher, but it is better not to let it grow in height. Pinching the upper shoots will allow the shrub to grow in width, so that it looks much more beautiful. In addition, it is the undersized specimens that bloom more intensively.

Pachistachis red

In this species of plant, the bract is painted in a dark olive shade, which coincides with the shade of the leaves. Bright scarlet, long flowers with orange pistils, thickly growing from the spikelet, resemble flags and give the shrub a very elegant look. In nature, red pachistachis can reach 2 meters in height.

Temperature conditions

All plants whose homeland is the tropics love moderate warmth. Pachistachis is not an exception in this sense. Comfortable shrubs will be at a temperature of 20-23 ° C. In hotter climates, it does not so readily bloom, and its leaves become small. The lower limit of air temperature, permissible in winter, when the plant does not bloom - 15 ° C. When cooling to 10 ° C, pachistahis is likely to lose leaves, and it will not survive a long stay at this temperature.

Badly affect the condition of the plant drafts. From them it drops the lower leaves, baring the trunk, and it does not look so beautiful.

Proper home care for pachistachios involves regular and sufficient watering so that the soil in the pot is always moist. In hot summertime, you need to water the plant up to 2 times a week, and in winter at least 1 time in 10 days.

Proper soil, good drainage and a hole in the pot are indispensable conditions that will ensure proper hydration of the pachistachis and prevent rotting of the roots. Water for watering shrubs should be warm, pre-settled and soft.

Tip: carefully monitor the regularity of watering, preventing the drying of the soil. Pachistachis reacts to a lack of moisture by dropping its leaves. After watering, as a rule, the plant does not return to normal and sheds its leaves.

Humidity of air up to 50% is another important criterion for pakhistahis to please the grower with his beauty. To do this, the plant must be sprayed daily with water, or put the pot in a wide pan with wet expanded clay. The insufficient level of air humidity is the main reason why pachistachis leaves curl and dry their tips.

For flowering this plant needs a lot of light. The only condition is that it should be bright enough, but diffused. Direct sunlight causes the leaves to burn out and they acquire a light green tint. For shrubs, it's not scary, but it loses its beauty.

Pachistahis loves light, loose, slightly acidic soil that will be well ventilated and will not allow the roots to rot from abundant watering. The best substrate is a mixture of two parts of compost and one part of peat and sand. You can also mix in equal parts of turf and leaf land, peat, sand and humus, add 2 parts of clay. Drainage from expanded clay is required.

In the summer, during the flowering period, fertilizer is fertilized twice a week. For this purpose, you can use specialized tools for flowering plants or mullein infusion. In winter, top dressing is made no more than once a month.

It is important not to overdo it and keep the proportions, because an excess of fertilizer leads to a weakening of the plant.

Possible difficulties in caring for pachistachis

If the fundamental principles are respected, the pachistachis is quite simple to maintain and pleases the grower with a lush crown with bright spikelets. The main difficulty that this plant represents is the need for regular watering and humidification of the air. This means that pachistachis should not be left unattended for a long time.

Another difficulty that a florist may face is the need to constantly form the crown of a bush. This plant is very fond of pulling up, which makes it unattractive and reduces the number of bracts. Constant pruning and pinching are necessary conditions for the growth of a beautiful bush.

Proper care and maintenance of the necessary conditions make the pachistachis quite strong and resistant to parasites. In rare cases, the plant can infect such pests:

  • Mealybug. This parasite is evidenced by a white bloom, similar to cotton wool, which appears in the leaf axils.
  • Spider mite With a sufficient level of humidity, this parasite appears extremely rarely. The dust mite on the leaves, the appearance of a thin spider web, small yellow dots indicate a lesion with a tick. In the end, the leaves curl, take on a brown tint and fall off.
  • Shchitovka. Signs of occurrence of this pest are similar to spider mites. Also on the leaves may appear sticky bloom and brown scales on the undersides of the leaves.

Little about the plant

The most common type of this plant in indoor floriculture is “pachistachis yellow.” Much less often it is possible to meet and "pakhistahis red". In general, in nature they number about seven species. By its nature, it is a shrub, and this “bush” can grow quite easily to almost a meter height (on average up to 80 cm). But such plant sizes do not indicate good care, but rather the opposite - the flower is left to itself. This is noticeable at first glance. Such plants have an ugly bare, often twisted trunk, and only at the very top is a bush of green leaves. It is necessary to form a beautiful bush of the pachistachis at a young age, pinching the tops, which allows it to build up side branches, which not only betray the flower a beautiful, bushy look, but also on each such twig there will later be openwork yellow spikelets with airy white flowers. I want to note that what is considered a flower, in fact, is not. This houseplant has a yellow bract - spikelet, on which white flowers appear. Blooming pakhistakhis amazing sight! But, alas, blooming is short-lived, the flowers quickly fade. But the spike itself remains and holds on for a long time. Actually this spike and gave the name to the whole plant. Translated from the Greek language in the native "Pachistachys" - "Fat Ear". If the conditions in which it is contained are suitable for it, and the care is good, then it will bloom for a long time, until late autumn, dropping faded bracts and growing new ones.

Temperature and lighting

In the warm season problems with the content of pachistachis should not be. This heat-loving flower and it is necessary to protect it, perhaps, from the cold drafts (from the air conditioner, for example). Room temperature during this period is quite comfortable for him. But the best place for him in the summer is in the open air. You can carry it there as soon as a steady heat is established, and bring it into the room with the first signs of a cold snap. In winter, the pachistachis needs heat within + 18-20 degrees. But from personal experience I can say that a lower temperature (+15 degrees) will also not harm him. That is, it can be safely kept with plants that require cool winter content.

Pachistachis light-requiring. As shown by the same practice, even some sunshine would not hurt him. Moreover, they are even desirable for him, but within reasonable limits. From the scorching sun in the midday hours the plant must be protected.

Watering, air humidity, fertilizer

Pakhistakhis, the flower is just perfect for those who like to “spill”. Pour it in the summer is almost impossible. But can not be dried. In winter, watering pachistachis, like many indoor plants, depends on the temperature in the room. When kept in cool conditions, it should be watered much less frequently than at normal room temperature — 2-3 days after the top layer of the soil dries out.

As well as watering, pahistahis loves and regular spraying. In the summer, give him this pleasure as often as possible, but in the winter only with warm content. If the room is cool, then it is better not to spray.

Flowering depletes any plant, and pachistachis is no exception. Therefore, it is necessary to feed him. This plant normally reacts to both mineral fertilizers and organic. If there is an opportunity, then it is better to use tinctures of well fermented chicken manure or mullein, but you can also buy ready-made organic or complex mineral fertilizer. In general, here for you complete freedom of choice.

This little flower with two months. He feels great in the country, and cuttings will be taken from him.

Transplant pakhistahisa

Considering that pachistachis is very quickly grown, you will not have to replant the same plant for a long time. Although it is advised that adult plants be replanted every three years, it is not reasonable. By the time "vozgrosleniya", it will be unattractive. And in three years they will completely lose decorativeness. Therefore, it should be replanted annually, as long as it is appropriate. And then pahistahis will need to rejuvenate.

This plant likes space, therefore, and the pot should be rather big, even if you have a single plant, and not several bushes in one pot. The roots of the plant grow mainly in width, which means that the pot should be taken low and wide. In addition, in such a pot a group of several pachistachises looks better. Despite the increased moisture-loving nature of the flower, it is also impossible to prevent stagnation of water, so the pot must have drainage holes. And the drainage layer itself (clay shards, expanded clay) must be at least one and a half centimeters. Land for planting - pachistachis transplants need light and at the same time moisture-absorbing. You can make it from equal parts of turf and leaf land, peat, humus and sand. Sand can be replaced with perlite, and add chopped sphagnum moss or hydrogel pellets to the mixture. In fact, in the hydrogel itself, pakhistahis grows well, but in this case it is desirable to feed only with mineral fertilizer. If this is a planned, annual transplant, then after planting, trim the stems lightly.

And this is already going to bloom young rastyushki grown from cuttings of pachistachis, which is on the top photo

Pachistachis breeding

This flower reproduces very simply. Cope with this under the force of any novice florist. Pachistachis can be propagated both in spring and throughout the summer. Rooted stalk very quickly, and quickly blooms. Rooted at the beginning of summer cutting, by the middle of summer he becomes a “donor” for reproduction.

The stalk from the mother plant is taken after flowering (with a spikelet, after the fall of white flowers). It should have at least two pairs of leaflets, and the stem under the lower pair is about 2.5-3 cm long. Before planting, it would be good to keep the cutting in a root-forming stimulator solution, but you can do it easier: dip it in aloe juice or roll in the root. Land for planting is the same as for transplanting. After planting the cutting, cover it with any transparent cap (glass jar, P / E package, etc.) and place it in the lit place. In the process of rooting, we monitor the humidity of the earth, periodically spray the cutting, remove the condensate from the cap. The spikelet left, of course, will disappear, as the lower pair of leaves may die, but new leaves will begin to grow in place of the ear. This is a signal that the rooting was successful and can be removed to fresh air. Pretty soon (in 15-20 days) your pakhistahis will bloom. If there is an opportunity, it is better to grow several young plants and plant them in one pot. I can’t vouch for the first flowering, but if we give the pakhistahis proper care and pinch the tops of the bushes in time, then on three or four bushes planted together can bloom 20-25 bright yellow spikelets!

Candidate for rejuvenation. Here "two in one" - and the stem was bare, and the air was dry.

Possible difficulties

If you didn’t read the above carefully enough, then exposing the lower part of the trunk will cause you a serious alarm. I will remind you. This is normal. The plant has already grown and must be rejuvenated (multiplied).

If the tips of the leaves have begun to dry, and the whole leaf is curled, this indicates that the air is too dry. Do not forget to spray the plant! The same may be the reason that pachistachis does not bloom.

If the leaves of the flower began to fall off suddenly, this may be due to insufficient irrigation or to the action of a draft. Establish the cause and eliminate it.

If during reproduction you seem to have done everything correctly, and the cuttings do not want to take root, and the leaves fade, it means that you do not have enough heat for it. Find a warmer place. Similarly, the delay in rooting may be due to the fact that large, developed leaves take up a lot of the energy needed to grow roots. In this case, simply cut them in half.

General information

The leaves of the plant have a dark olive shade. Leaf shape oblong oval. The inflorescences of pachistachis are like bright sunny spikelets, which still resemble a candle. All deceptively take them for the very flowering, but this is just the bracts.

Flowering in plants occurs unsightly light flowers that appear perpendicular to the spikelets. It occurs suddenly and quickly showered. And the remaining golden spikelets for a long time give the plant an elegant look. Pachistachis can reach a height of almost a meter. The stems of the plant are flat and erect.

Duration of flowering in the plant lasts the entire warm season until the beginning of autumn. But the inflorescences themselves crumble a couple of weeks after the start of flowering. Up to 20 such spikelets can be present on one plant.

Varieties and types

Pakhistakhis "Yellow" or "Lutea" can fluctuate around meter. The leaves are a large leaf shape oval and length in the region of 20 cm. The inflorescences have a yellow hot shade. Flowering lasts a long period.

Pakhistakhis "Yellow" the most popular in the cultivation of indoor plants.

Pakhistakhis "Red" The bracts have a dark olive shade, and of them, during the flowering period, flowers of a rich scarlet shade are seen. Its height can be up to 2 meters. This look is quite bright and its color gives it a motley attractive look.

Pachistachis home care

Illumination pakhistahis prefers scattered bright, but direct sunlight should be avoided, they burn leaves. The best location is the west or east side of the room.

The temperature regime of the plant is necessary within 17 - 22 degrees in the summer period, and in winter it is necessary to maintain the pachistachis at rest with a decrease in temperature to 15 degrees. The plant does not tolerate drafts and with the beginning of the heating season, it is preferable to move it away from the battery.

In this case, it is better to put small stones in the tray.

The whole period until the plant blooms it needs to be fed with liquid mullein or complex fertilizer. This procedure is carried out once for 15 days. It is necessary to fertilize after careful watering.

Transplant and soil for pachistachis

The composition of the soil for the plant should include peat, sheet soil, turf soil, humus, coarse sand. All components are mixed in equal proportions.

To make a transplant is necessary as needed when the root system becomes crowded. Move the plant into a container more than the previous one by a couple of centimeters in width and height, but before it pruned shoots.

How to trim pachistachis

Once every few years the plant needs to be renewed and rejuvenated. It is necessary that the stems are not bare.

In order for the plant to have a luxurious lush crown, in the first year of planting it is necessary to cut the plant and pinch the tops so that the bush is lush. Pinching must be done after flowering. And pruning should be done before flowering, in early spring. All stems need to be cut and leave three pairs of leaves. Then the third pair of leaves, which is located on the side stems, must be pinched.

Pachistachis breeding cuttings

Pachistachis breeding by cuttings can be made all year round. To do this, take a cutting with several pairs of leaves. Rooting can be done both in the soil and in the water.

In the ground it is necessary to cover the container with a film or cut plastic bottle. The appearance of the roots occurs somewhere in 21 days. After rooting, the plant is transplanted into a container with a slightly larger size.

Diseases and pests

  • Among the pests, the plant affects the spider mite and the scythe.. As a counter, the plant must be treated with insecticides. Or you can make a light garlic solution and spray the plant. And after the destruction of pests to arrange a warm shower plant.
  • Pachistachis opal leaves - This is due to climate change in the room. Either the air is too dry and there is not enough spraying. Or drafts appeared, and the air temperature dropped.
  • Pachistahis sheds leaves - The reason for the lack of moisture in the soil. Or cold conditions of detention.
  • Pachistachis leaves turn yellow and dry - this happens because of too dry air in the room. It is necessary to provide adequate hydration and spraying of the plant.
  • Pachistachis leaves curled - The reason for the lack of light, moisture and spraying leaves.

Creating a favorable environment

The forests of the tropical belt of Central and South America are home to pachistachis. In order for a plant to develop successfully in a room, it is necessary to create conditions for it as close to natural as possible:

  1. Maintain air temperature. In spring and summer, it should not fall below 18–20 ° C. If the thermometer rises above this mark, it is important to increase the humidity in the room to prevent leaves from drying out. In autumn and winter, the optimum temperature for pachistachis is 15–19 ° C. With cooler air, the leaves of this heat-loving plant begin to fall off, and in spring, with the beginning of the vegetative period, it will need a long recovery period for the bush to regain volume.
  2. Cool drafts are a big threat to pachistachis. This should be taken into account when choosing a place for a plant. In the cold season it is better to remove it from the window sill and put it at some distance from the window.
  3. Illumination for pachistachis should be moderate. An exotic flower should get enough sun, but its direct rays leave ugly burns on the leaves. The ideal choice would be a window on the east or west side of the house. If pahistahis is grown on a southern window, then he needs to create artificial shading.
  4. This tropical plant is accustomed to high humidity - from 60%. When growing indoors with dry air, it is necessary to take special measures: put a container with water next to the pot, hang a wet towel on the battery, or use a special device, an air humidifier. In winter, it is better to move pakhistahis away from heating devices.

The creation of favorable conditions is the basis for the active development and flowering of the pachistachis. His requirements for the environment are not much different from the requirements of most houseplants, "migrated" on the sill of tropical forests.

Planting pakhistahisa and fertilizers

The size of the pot for a plant should depend on the dimensions of the root system: it is better that the volume exceeds them by 3-4 cm, because pahistahis loves free space. It is recommended to give preference to wide crockery. At the bottom of the pot a layer of drainage is required for less than 2 cm. This will ensure sufficient air flow to the roots and prevent water stagnation at the bottom, which leads to the appearance of rot.

For drainage, you can use small stones, necessarily decontaminated, or expanded clay purchased at the store.

Top dressing and soil selection for pachistachis also play an important role in plant development. It prefers fertile soil with low acidity and good aeration, therefore the ground should be loose. The easiest way to buy a universal mix for flowering houseplants, adding to it coarse sand or vermiculite in a ratio of 4: 1.

You can prepare the soil yourself by mixing:

All components are taken in equal parts.

From April until the beginning of autumn, the pachistachis is actively developing and blooming, so it needs regular feeding. They are done 1-2 times a month. For the plant to get all the necessary substances, you can alternate the introduction of organic matter (for example, infusion of mullein) and complex mineral fertilizers for flowering species. In the autumn and winter in the dressing is not necessary.

Regular care

In the care of pachistachis at home, the key role is assigned to regular watering. This plant loves moisture, so the soil should not be allowed to dry in spring and summer. It needs to be watered as soon as the top layer of the earth dries out. In winter, watering is reduced to 2 times a week, but you should always focus on the condition of the soil and the flower itself. The lack of moisture greatly harms the pachistachis, and can lead to its death.

On hot days and with dry air in the room, the plant responds well to regular spraying from a spray bottle. It is better to produce them in the morning and in the evening, while the sun's rays do not fall on the pachistachis.

In order for the plant to grow in a bushy bush with numerous bright inflorescences, caring for pahistachis at home must necessarily include regular pruning and nipping of young shoots. If you do not do this, you will get an almost bare, unbranched stem with rare leaves, and such an instance will not look decorative.

The best time to form a crown is in early spring, when the intensive growth of the stems begins. Young shoots pinch at the top of the axils of the leaves, from which new shoots will appear later, and old ones will be cut with sharp clippers. This procedure should be started when the height of the pachistachis reaches 20 cm.

During the growing season it is possible to produce crown formation up to three times. Extrusion of stems in height will slow down, but at the same time the number of shoots will increase.

Adult copies are enough to trim once a year, in March.

Cut off parts of the shoots are used for plant reproduction. To do this, they are rooted in water or soil, after having been treated with a growth stimulator. The roots will appear in about 10–14 days, and then the cuttings can be transplanted into a small pot or plastic cup.

If you properly care for pahistah, then flowering occurs from early spring to mid-autumn. Sometimes under favorable conditions, it continues throughout the year. To do this, you need to create favorable conditions for the plant in the room and do not forget about regular care.

What does pahistahis look like? A photo. Care

Pachistachis is a tropical plant. It grows in southern and central parts of America and eastern India. On average, there are 12 species of plants. Pahistachis yellow is grown as an indoor flower. It is very rare to find red pachistahis. Care at home is not difficult. The main thing for him is light, heat and humidity. And during active growth and flowering, you need to provide the plant with additional feeding.

Pachistachis has elongated dark green leaves. It draws attention to itself with its yellow buds, resembling golden ears or candles. They are often mistaken for flowers, but they are only pre-flowers. Pachistachis blooms with inconspicuous white flowers, which grow perpendicular to the pre-flowers, moreover, they quickly fall off. But yellow ears keep for a very long time and give the plant an elegant solemn look.

Where to place?

The flower needs good lighting and warmth. The ideal place would be the windows facing west or east. Pachistachis requires bright, but at the same time diffused lighting. You can arrange the flower on the south window, but then in summer the plant should be pritenyat.

The most comfortable temperature in spring and summer is 20 0 С heat for the flower pahistahis. Home care at a temperature above 24 0 С requires an increase in humidity. In the summer, pachistachis can be carried out on the balcony and put in the shade. In autumn and winter, it is necessary to maintain the temperature in the room within 16-19 0 C. Pachistachis is sensitive to drafts. Also, it is undesirable to put a flower near the battery.

Pachistachis requires maintaining sufficiently high humidity. For spraying, it is better to use soft water, filtered or settled. In winter, the flower must be sprayed every day. During flowering must be careful when spraying and not fall on the inflorescence.

Requirements for irrigation and fertilizer pakhistahisa

In summer, the plant requires abundant watering. The soil should always be wet. It is recommended to water the flower every three days. Do not allow excess moisture, especially the stagnation of water. In winter, watering should be reduced. Moisturize the soil takes about once every 2 weeks or a little more often when its top layer dries. Do not allow the soil to dry out.

During the summer flowering pachistachis must be fed. Home care allows the use of both mineral and organic fertilizers. Especially good flower reacts to the complex fertilizer for flowers. Top dressing bring at the time of watering 1 or 2 times a month. As organic fertilizer you can use chicken manure or cow dung. Both mineral and organic supplements have a good effect on the plant, so the choice should be guided by personal preferences and abilities.

Crown formation

As you know, there are plants that require additional attention to the branches and foliage. One of them - indoor flower pachistahis. Caring for the crown of the plant must begin early enough. As soon as the flower grows to 10-15 cm, the first pruning should be done. It is also necessary to pinch the side shoots. To do this, simply remove the 3rd pair of leaves. Pinching pachistachis need up to 4 times a year. As a result, by the beginning of winter a small plant about 8 cm tall with a large number of tops will be formed. After wintering, the flower must be cut again or pinch the shoots. No need to be upset that in the first year the plant will not bloom. It is better to devote this time to the formation of the crown, and the next year to enjoy flowering. Each branch, which blooms, independently divided into two, which also bloom. Next spring, you need to pinch the shoots again to enjoy the blossoming of the pahistachis houseplant. Care for the flower crown is necessary. The plant begins to branch only after it grows to a height of 80 cm to 1.5 m. The result will be a long, bare trunk and one flower at the top, which does not look very attractive.

Reproduction and transplanting

Pachistachis propagates by cuttings. They appear during flowering. In order to propagate pachistachis, it is necessary to cut a 10-12 cm long stalk and place it in water for rooting. After 2 or 3 weeks, when the roots appear, the plant can be planted in a small cup. As the pachistachis grows, it is transplanted into a pot 12-13 cm in diameter, and then into a large flower pot. It should be 2.5 liters in volume and low. The roots of the flower like space. It is also necessary to take care of drainage. This may be a layer of expanded clay or clay shards 1.5 cm high. Frequent transplantation causes the pachistachis to actively bloom.

You can immediately cut the cuttings into the ground. In this case, the soil is mixed with sand. If you cover the cutting with plastic or a glass cap, it will grow faster. With this method of reproduction, it is imperative to open the soil for 2-3 hours 2 times a week for airing.

The air temperature in the room during the rooting of the flower should not be less than 20 ° C and not more than 26 ° C. It is also necessary to constantly maintain high humidity.

Pests, flower diseases

Pests of pachistachis can be:

You can cope with them with the help of special tools that are sold in stores.

In addition to pests, the flower can affect diseases:

  1. Mealy dew. The disease looks like a white bloom on the leaves and stem. To get rid of it, you first need to remove the affected areas of the flower and spray it with special preparations. As a preventive measure, it is necessary to apply phosphate-potassium fertilizer to the soil.
  2. Twisted leaves appear due to insufficient watering and moisture. If the earth is dry, it needs to be soaked. To do this, pour into the container the distilled water at room temperature and place the plant in it for 10 hours. Then increase the watering and frequency of spraying.
  3. Yellowing tips appear due to lack of moisture.
  4. Wilting leaves. If moisture and watering is enough, then you need to feed the pachistachis. Home care requires organic or mineral fertilization to the soil. In this case, nitrogen fertilizers will most likely be needed.
  5. Leaf fall in the summer is a lack of watering and moistening, in winter a low temperature. Also cause can be drafts.
  6. Elongated small leaves appear when the flower lacks light.
  7. Root rot occurs due to low temperature and its fluctuations. If the roots are severely affected, then you need to root the top.
  8. Slow growth indicates a clear nutritional deficiency. In this case, the plant requires mineral and organic fertilizer.

Where else can one meet pachistahis?

This plant is grown not only at home. In the middle lane you can see how indoor flowers are used in landscape design. Caring for them in these conditions is not much different. In early February, pruning is carried out, then they are planted in small containers for seedlings. The flower also needs good lighting, dressing and pinching of the shoots. To the plant did not die on the street, it must be hardened. At a temperature of 15 0 C, seedlings need to be taken out once a day to fresh air. Begin the procedure from 20 minutes and gradually bring up to 3 hours. Cuttings are planted in the ground in spring, when there will be no frost.

It must be remembered that the pachistachis flower requires care is not difficult, but at the same time it can not be left unattended. If the plant does not create favorable conditions for life, then it will quickly die. And in order for pahistakhis to enjoy a lush flowering, you need to pinch it in time, cut it off and repot it.

Plant description

Flower pahistahis refers to tropical species. This is a representative of the Acante family. Most often grown in flower beds, as in a residential environment can cause difficulties in terms of care. People call the culture “Lollipop”, “Antique Candelabrum”, “Yellow Candle” and “Golden Shrimp”. The scientific name “Pachystachys” is translated from Greek as “thickened ear”.

Growing culture bush. Stems can be very large, if they are not cut, the leaves are slightly elongated, green. Bract - the most prominent part of the plant. It is something resembling a fat cone. Flowers appear from bracts. They have an elongated spongy shape. Color usually pale cream.

Types and varieties of Pachistachis

Homeland plants tropical forests of India and South America. In the wild, these plants are very common - people in tropical regions even consider them a simple weed. And in temperate and northern latitudes, this plant is considered decorative and is grown at home or in clubs. What are the most popular types?

  • Yellow pachistachis can be found more often. It is a large shrub with slightly branching stems up to 110 cm long. The leaves are large, oblong (up to 10 cm), with a sharp tip, green in color. Bract yellow, can grow up to 10 cm in length. Flowers elongated, white or cream, grow almost perpendicular to the bract.
  • Red pachistachis is grown mainly in flowerbeds, in greenhouses. It can reach a height of 2 meters. The leaves are large, rich green. Bracts bright green, in tons with leaves. But the flowers - red, elongated.

But if you apply to him, then care at home will not cause great difficulties.

  • Pachistahis loves warmth like any tropical plant. But the heat is not suitable for him. The temperature in summer is + 21 ... + 25 ° С, and in winter + 20 ... + 23 ° С. Any sharp rises or falls in temperature that go beyond the permissible range lead to flower pain and a variety of problems with flowering, leaf color, growth, and so on.
  • Permanent drafts cannot be allowed, but from time to time it is still worth opening windows and airing the room if the flower grows in a room.
  • Light must be diffused both in the flowerbed and at home. A lot of shadow leads to the appearance of rot, and direct sunlight can burn the leaves, so it is important to find a middle ground. If the plant is grown at home, then they need to be put on the western or eastern window. In winter and late autumn, you can transfer the flower to the southern window.
  • Humidity is maintained elevated (from 60%), since the large leaves of the plant evaporate a lot of moisture. The easiest way to maintain it is to spray about 2-3 times a week. You can also install near a pot of water, with wet, decorative pebbles.

  • Watering in the warm season is carried out 1-2 times a week, and in the cold - once in 10 days. The earth should never dry out!
  • Feeding is needed during the period of active growth. Usually they are carried out in spring and summer with a frequency - once every 2 weeks. Fertilizer is taken for flowering plants: "Agricola," Good power "," Flower happiness "," Etisso "," Bona Forte ". From organic suitable weakly concentrated infusion of mullein.
  • In order for the pachistachis not to be stretched heavily, it must be cut and pinned regularly. Pruned culture in February or March. Long shoots (that have grown to 20 cm) pinch at the right level, and the old - pruned. Thus, the growth of lateral branches is stimulated.

Pachistachis bloom

The dignity of the pachistachis is flowering. But in order for the flower to bloom beautifully, it is necessary to take care that all necessary conditions are necessary for this.

  • The temperature is maintained at the comfort level indicated above. In this case, the humidity should be high.
  • During the period of laying the flower stalkers, the culture is fed up, otherwise it may slow down in development and even completely reset the bract.
  • Pruning is carried out not only to the culture was beautiful, compact, low, but also to bloom. Old shoots do not give flowers. Bracts and flowers are characteristic only of young stems.
  • Only with an abundance of diffused light pakhistahis blooms. If the light is low, it will increase greens.

If all the conditions for flowering plants are met, pakhistahis will bloom from late winter to mid-autumn. In rare cases, flowering can last the whole year.

Pachistachis breeding

Pachistachis are propagated by cutting. It is possible to conduct grafting at any time of the year. But usually it is combined with pruning. Cuttings with 2-3 internodes are cut from the mother plant. Then they are placed in the substrate or in the water in order to develop the roots.

  • In the case of immersion in water, you just need to take the separated warm water and put a cutting there. When the roots are 2-3 cm long, the stalk is planted in the nutrient ground (on the street or in a room pot).

  • If the cutting is rooted in the substrate, then you need to make a mixture of sand and peat in equal proportions. In this mixture immersed cuttings of 3 cm and cover with a plastic bag with a small hole for ventilation. Cuttings, if necessary, watered, sprayed, sometimes ventilated. In a month, the first roots will appear. Then you can remove the package, and a month later - transplant the rooted cuttings in separate pots or flower beds.

Pachistachis is transplanted about once a year if it does not grow very fast. The procedure is carried out in the spring or at the end of winter. Sometimes a re-transplant is required throughout the year, when the crop is simply cramped in a pot - the roots peeking from the drainage hole.

The ground for pachistachis must be nutritious, loose, so that the water passes through it well, with low acidity. In the case of acquiring land in a store, suitable soil for flowering plants or a universal soil with vermiculite or sand. If the land is made independently, then it should combine equal parts of peat, sand, humus, sod and leafy soil.

The pot is selected in size so that the flower does not feel cramped. It is better to choose a slightly larger one than the previous one. The third of the pot is filled with drainage. The same in the case of planting on a flower bed. In the hole under the culture is always important to put drainage. It is not needed only in sandy land, but then it is necessary to enrich it with leafy and soddy earth. Transplantation is carried out by the method of transshipment, while even a blooming flower can be transshipped, it is quite safe.

Diseases, pests and other problems

Diseases and pests

Sick flower pachistahis very rare. It is resistant to most diseases, but improper care at home leads to various problems.

  • Lack of moisture leads to wilting leaves. And, unfortunately, after watering, they are not always restored - usually they fall off. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the earth does not dry out much.

  • If the leaves began to lose color, acquire light shades, then most likely the flower lacks nutrition. In this case, mandatory feeding is introduced - once every 2 weeks.
  • Twisting the leaves or dry tips talk about low humidity. Spraying will help to solve the problem, as well as installation near an open container with water.
  • If pahistahis dropped the leaves until autumn, then the reason is that the flower has little watering or the temperature is very low.

From pests pachistachis can spoil a mealybug, scale insect, spider mite. Fight them with insecticide spray.

Flower pahistahis - description

Pachistachis yellow is an evergreen shrub with a height of 90 to 20 cm with dark green oval, slightly wrinkled and pointed at the ends up to 10 cm long. White tubular double-lipped flowers of pachistachis up to 5 cm long with yellow bracts leave 10 kg in length. . As long as flowering continues, the bracts retain a fresh look and appeal.

How to care for pachistah.

The pachistachis room flower is a plant that is warm and light-loving, it needs bright diffused light for normal growth and development, therefore the northeast windows are the best place for a flower in an apartment. On the southern window-sills one should shade the pachistachis from direct rays at least in the midday time when the sun is especially hot.

Under natural growing conditions, the lower temperature threshold for pachistachis is 10˚C, but a long stay at such a temperature leads to loss of leaves, therefore at home the period of rest should take place at a temperature not lower than 16 ˚C. In the summer, the plant pachistachis normally tolerates the natural temperature for our latitudes. Vacations in the open air - on the terrace, in the garden or on the balcony - will benefit the plant, but only if you organize protection against precipitation, wind and drafts.

Watering and feeding pakhistahisa.

Watering the pachistachis during the growing season will require regular and abundant (depending on air temperature 1 time in 3-7 days), and during the rest period moderate to poor if the pachistachis spends the winter in conditions of low air temperature. If you do not have the opportunity to put the plant in the winter in a cool room, then water it as usual. The fact that it is time to water the plant, you will be prompted pachistachis leaves, which thirst fall and hang. However, it is better not to wait for such hints, and water the soil in the pot as soon as its top layer dries. Water for moistening the substrate is used thawed, passed through a filter or settled for 24 hours. Water temperature for irrigation should be 1-2 degrees warmer than in the room.

Home care for pahistachis involves fertilizing. Pachistachis are fed during active growth 2 times a month with complex mineral fertilizer, which is applied as a solution to a pre-moistened substrate. Pachistachis can be fertilized with organic matter, for example, with a solution of mullein or chicken manure, which is sold in specialized stores in a ready-to-use form. If in winter pahistahis does not rest, feed it with a mineral complex once in 1-1.5 months.

Indoor pachistachis - breeding

Most often for the reproduction of pachistachis using the vegetative method - grafting. As we have already written, shoots cut during spring shearing can be used as cuttings. How to propagate pachistachis? You will need apical cuttings with two internodes and two pairs of leaves. To bruise, which most successfully takes place at a temperature of 22 ˚C, the cuttings are placed by cutting in a container with water. In the process of regrowth of the roots from the cuttings, leaves may fall, and to avoid this, the leaf plates should be shortened by half. But even if in this case the leaves fall off, do not despair: after landing in the ground at the top of the cutting new leaves will appear.

Rooted cuttings are also in the loose substrate of equal parts of leafy earth, humus, peat, turfy earth and perlite. The soil mixture is filled with a plastic bottle cut from above, and the cut of the transplanted cutting is treated with Kornevin before planting in the bottle with the substrate. To create a greenhouse effect, the top of the bottle with the handle is covered with a film, which is removed from time to time so that the cutting can breathe. And you can put it on the lower part of the bottle, in which the cutting is planted, its upper part and fix it with scotch tape, and for ventilation just unscrew and remove the cap. Keep cuttings under bright diffused light. Problems with the regrowth of pachistachis usually do not arise: the roots grow even in leaves that have lost their leaves. When the cuttings acquire the root system, plant them in the amount of 3-4 pieces in a low and wide pot: in the form of a bush, the pachistachis looks much more attractive. And do not forget to pinch the tops of the stems from time to time.

Diseases of pachistachis and their treatment.

When growing pahistachis in heavy soil, abundant and frequent watering can lead to stagnant water in the roots and damage to the plant root rot. Examine the root system of the pachistachis, and if it has not completely decayed, remove the affected areas, keep the roots in the solution of the fungicide and plant the plant in a fresh, more suitable substrate. However, it is not always possible to save the plant from this fungal disease, even if you reduce watering and the first time you use a solution of a fungicide to moisten the substrate. In order not to develop root rot, watch the state of the substrate in the pot: it must be loose and light. And be sure to drain the water drained into the pan after watering. If you keep a pot of pachistachis on a wet-pebble pan, set it so that the drain holes of the pot are not submerged. Water should saturate the substrate with moisture, and not stagnate in it.

All other troubles occur in pachistachis from improper care or as a result of non-compliance with the conditions of its cultivation. For example, if a flower has fallen leaves, this is evidence that you have not watered enough or kept it in a draft. Twisted leaves and dry tips - a sign of too low humidity in the room. Strongly stretching stems, lack of flowering and small leaves indicate that pachistachis suffers from a lack of light. Slow development and growth retardation means that it is time to change the substrate in the pot, and the shoots that were exposed in the lower part hint that rejuvenation is required to the pachistachis - short pruning.

Pests and control of pachistachis.

Most often amaze room pakhistahis mealybugs, scale insects and spider mites. They all feed on the plant sap. If you notice white cotton-like lumps in the axils of the leaves or small yellow dots on the leaf plates, take immediate action. Shchitovok and chervets need to be removed from the plant with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Ticks are not so easy to detect because of their small size, but a sign of their presence, besides pinpoint on the leaves, is a thin web. Wash the pachistachis under the shower, protecting the substrate from the ingress of soapy water, then let the plant dry and run it over the leaves with Aktellik or Fitoverm. It is better to spray pahistachis outdoors.

Occasionally, whiteflies and thrips, which also feed on cell sap, are occupied by pachistachis. Measures to combat these pests are the same as with ticks, scutes and worms.

Pachistachis spiked (Pachystachys spicata)

- a species that is grown mainly in botanical gardens and is a rare member of the genus in home collections. It has dark green leaves up to 25 cm in length and bright red flowers collected on a cone-shaped bract. Some experts believe that the pachistachis spikelet is not an independent species, but a kind of red pachistachis, but there is still no clarity on this issue.

Pachistahis - omens and superstitions

Pachistachis is credited with magical properties: he de fills the house with vital force, has a beneficial effect on the human nervous system, that is, has a calming effect on hyperactive people and at the same time activates the passive household. The yellow color of the bracts of the pachistachis has a positive effect on the relationship between the spouses, helping to smooth out conflicts and develop compromise solutions.

Some signs are connected with pakhistahis. For example, if during normal care the inflorescences suddenly began to fall off the plant and the leaves dry, this heralds trouble with relatives or with relatives. And here is an unexpectedly bright coloring of the bracts - a sign of an upcoming pleasant event. Pakhistahis, presented as a gift, is a wish for happiness in your personal life, which, it is said, always comes true.
