One of the most beautiful and popular plant species for decorating garden plots is muscari. Planting and caring for this flower is not a big deal. If you follow certain rules, you can get an excellent result both in the garden and at home. Indoor floriculture is popular in many countries of the world. Growing muscari on a windowsill or balcony is not too burdensome. Long flowering will delight with gorgeous flowers and delicate musky aroma.

Spread

Muscari (see photo below) has a very wide area of distribution across the globe. It prefers to grow on the slopes of the mountains, forest edges, on alpine meadows. It can be found in the steppe regions of Europe, Asia, and North Africa.

There are about 60 types of flower. On their basis, cultivated varieties, widely used horticulture. Not flattering their attention and indoor floriculture. Many varieties grow well at home.

Muscari has several other names: squirting onions, mouse hyacinth. It belongs to the family of hyacinth, a genus of bulbous. This is a perennial herb. Depending on the variety, the height varies from 3 to 30 cm. Almost all the bred species are decorative.

Bottom leaves in an amount of from 2 to 6 pieces grow up to 10-15 cm. The flowers are in the form of kegs or tubular, small. Consist of six tightly fused petals. The color is different, from white to deep purple, there are combined colors: dark blue and white.

The flowers are gathered in a raceme-shaped, dense, apical inflorescences up to 8 cm long. The number of flowers varies depending on the species: from a few to a few dozen. The aroma is strong and pleasant, reminiscent of musk, but much more tender.

The fruit is a winged three-fold angular box. Seeds are wrinkled, small, black, rounded. Do not lose the ability to germinate throughout the year.

Muscari flowers can have a different color, it depends on the plant variety. Consider the most popular:

  1. Muscari Armenian:

- the number of leaves - 3-7,

- height - up to 20 cm

- the color of the buds is deep blue, and on the edges of the frame is framed with a thin white stripe,

- flowering time - about three weeks, from the end of May.

2. Muscari pale:

- the number of leaves - 2-3,

- height - up to 30 cm

- color of buds - pale blue,

- flowering time - about three weeks, from mid-May.

3. Muscari grozdavidny:

- the number of leaflets - 2-6,

- height - up to 25 cm,

- color of buds - dark blue or white,

- flowering time - up to three weeks, in early May.

4. Muscari racemes:

- the number of leaves - 6,

- height - up to 30 cm

- color of buds - deep dark blue,

- flowering time - about three weeks, from the first half of May.

5. Muscari broadleaf:

- the number of leaves - up to 4,

- height - up to 20 cm

- the color of the buds is dark purple, one third at the top has lighter corollas,

- flowering time - about four weeks, from mid-May.

Muscari bulbs begin to be planted in late August or early September. Choose a sunny place, you can with a little shading. It must be elevated to avoid stagnant water. Too much moisture will cause the bulbs to rot. Gravel is often used as drainage.

The soil should be loose, in no case clay. In such a plant will not take root. Before planting, the soil must be fertilized with humus or compost. Top dressing will strengthen young shoots and ensure the appearance of large and bright flowers.

For planting pre-select healthy onion muscari. Planting and care are simple. Make a trench to a depth of 8 cm. At a distance of 6-10 cm bulbs are planted and sprinkled with earth. If the planting material is very shallow, then the planting depth is reduced to 3 cm, and the distance between the onions - to 2 cm.

For plants to grow and develop well, they will need help at first. It consists in weeding the flower beds from weeds.

Muscari can be propagated and seeds. They mature only in the lower flowers. They are collected on the already faded stems of the plant. Seeds are sown to a depth of 1-2 cm in the fall. In the spring there are leaves, they indicate the birth of a new bulb. After a couple of years, flowering will begin.

But planting onion is much easier, and they begin to bloom earlier. In a short period of babies becomes very much. When digging up muscari, each gardener decides for himself. You can replant them at any time, including during the flowering period. This should be done carefully, with a large lump of earth, to avoid damage to the roots.

These plants are prone to self-seeding. Landing thickening appears after 3-4 years. Thinning is recommended in August-October.

When planting any special dressing is not required. It will be quite enough top dressing in the fall, when digging the soil. About 5 kg of organic fertilizer are applied per square meter.

During the vegetative period, the plant is watered abundantly with warm rain water. The increased humidity at this time is very good for muscari. Planting and care, followed by her, will not cause much trouble: weeding from weeds and shallow loosening (2-3 cm).

After flowering, muscari do not need watering at all. After a period of flowering, the clusters are cut off. The leaves are left intact, they will help the bulbs to gather enough strength to bloom next year.

The plant does not require feeding, pest control. Toxicity perfectly protects it from parasites. There are isolated cases of defeat aphids. Sheltering for the winter is not necessary, the flowers have good frost resistance.

Flowers in garden design

Bright and varied shades of inflorescences of plants are happy to use landscape designers in the design of gardens. Muscari (photo sample flower beds, see the text) perfectly combined with daffodils and tulips.

A long early spring flowering (some varieties decorate a flower bed for about four weeks) gives vent to the imagination to decorate the site. Experts take into account another feature of different varieties - the beginning of flowering they do not match. With careful selection, you can ensure the beauty of the flowerbeds for a long time.

They are decorated with alpine slides, borders, wild stone compositions, around small ponds. Neighborhood with begonias, tricolor violets, lobularia will help to hide the wilting muscari. In one place unpretentious flowers can grow up to 10 years.

Garden on the windowsill

The lack of a summer cottage will not be an obstacle for an amateur grower to grow muscari. Planting and care at home will not cause problems even for beginners.

There are several techniques for obtaining the desired result:

  • “Cold preservation” - the bulbs are placed in a fridge for 3-4 months before planting in a pot,
  • in the pots on the bottom arrange drainage from large pebbles,
  • the soil is taken as fertile and fatty,
  • plants need solar diffused light,
  • provide high humidity,
  • soil irrigation is produced as the soil dries,
  • for visual effect you need to take as many flowers as possible in pots.

General description of the colors Muscari

The leaves of this plant are basal and can be up to 17 cm long. The total height of the viper's onion is about 30 cm. The leaf stems are leafless, and the perianth may have a cylindrical or tubular shape. The flowers are collected in dense inflorescences, they can be both racemes and apical.

This plant is presented in a wide range of colors from white to dark blue.

The two main advantages of mouse hyacinth are that:

  • almost all species of this plant are considered ornamental,
  • Muscari is very easy to care for.

What are the varieties of adder?

The genus Muscari has about 60 species. The most popular varieties include the following:

  • Muscari Armenian - The flowering period falls at the end of spring. Hyacinth has white flowers and large inflorescences. There are cases when Armenian Muscari had several near-flowering plants.
  • Tubergen muscari - heat-loving plant, the flowering period of which is about 25 days. Its main feature is that the flower has a double color. The top is light blue and the bottom of the inflorescence is dark blue. The area of its distribution - Asia Minor.
  • Stunning muscari - plant height is about 15 cm, flowering period falls on the beginning of May. An interesting fact is that this variety of viper onion does not form seeds. Brushes may consist of white and pink flowers.
  • Cuspid Muscari - has purple flowers and grows up to 20 cm in height. Often planted by self-seeding. Great for a cold climate, well withstands temperatures below 5 degrees.

How to choose a place to land and prepare?

When planting mouse hyacinth, remember this photophilous plant, but it can grow in the shade. For planting a loose and slightly acidic soil with an average level of humidity is perfect. Pay attention that the more fertile the soil is, the larger the flowers will be. To inflorescences were large and bright, the plant should be periodically fertilized with humus or compost.

Viper onion is great for creating flower arrangements, as it goes well with other varieties of primroses.

Muscari flowers: planting and care

The peculiarity of this plant is that it multiplies very quickly, while forming a beautiful floral carpet. In one season, the mother bulb is able to form a whole nest.

Please note that this variety of hyacinth does not tolerate stagnant melt water, and grows very poorly in the lowlands.

When planting a hyacinth, consider the fact that it can grow for several years in one place without a transplant, so before planting the land should be well fertilized with organic fertilizers.

When to plant a plant?

The optimal period for disembarkation is the beginning of autumn - until the end of October. This plant is planted in groups. When planting inspect the bulb, the shoots should be healthy.

There are the following recommendations and rules of landing:

  • Before planting, be sure to inspect the bulb for damage,
  • disinfect using karbofos and manganese solution in turn,
  • the day before planting, the prepared wells should be well filled with water, the entire soil layer should be completely saturated with water,
  • before planting add a little river sand to the hole, it is needed for good drainage,
  • large bulbs should be planted in the ground at 7 cm, and small at 3 cm.

Mouse hyacinth care

Viper onion does not require any specific care, therefore the plant will be able to grow even a novice gardener. Water the flower should be only at the beginning of the growing season, but often in this period the soil is still wet by itself, from melt water and spring rains. When the flower is at rest, it does not require any additional moisture. The need for regular watering arises only when there was no snow in winter, and spring was without rain.

How to replant mouse hyacinth?

Vegetative type of reproduction is carried out by dividing the parent bulb. Often this procedure is carried out in the period of autumn digging. Muscari should be transplanted in 5-6 years. From one maternal bulb you can get 30 small ones. In addition to the vegetative method, muscari also multiply by self-seeding. To prevent self-seeding, experienced gardeners recommend cutting flower stalks.

Do I need to prune the plant?

Pruning plants is carried out only when the last flowers wilt. Only then can you cut dry inflorescences. To prevent self-seeding, experienced gardeners recommend cutting the seeds. But the leaves can not be cut, as this can prevent the plant in the accumulation of nutrients for the winter. Do not forget to periodically weed and loosen the ground.

Pests and diseases

Often the mouse hyacinth suffers from mosaic. The cause of this disease is the onion yellow dwarfism virus.

The mosaic has the following symptoms:

  • the appearance on the leaves of a green mosaic plant,
  • reducing the length of the flower arrows,
  • plant growth inhibition.

Sometimes a flower may be affected by a cucumber mosaic. It is distinguished by pale green strokes and deformed leaves.

The plant can become infected with these diseases from aphids, and when they fall into the bulb, they remain there for a long time.

Please note that treatments for viral diseases have not yet been developed, therefore fight should be with aphids that carries them. The easiest way is to spray the plant with a soap solution.

Sometimes a mouse hyacinth can suffer from spider mites. To combat it, you can use drugs that belong to the aversectin group.

How to store bulbs?

Muscari is a perennial plant, so in one place they can grow for decades. But, if you decide to temporarily dig up the plants, then follow the following recommendations for storing bulbs:

  • it is best to dig out the bulbs when the leaves of the flower begin to dry,
  • dug onions should be well dried, and only then put in wet sand or peat,
  • periodically inspect the bulbs, and remove those that have begun to rot,
  • Store the bulbs at a temperature not lower than 17 ° C, at 70% humidity.

As a result, it should be noted that planting Armenian or any other type of Muscari is best in the fall. The division of the parent bulb is best carried out immediately after digging the site. By itself, the mouse hyacinth is a picky flower, so even a novice gardener can grow it.

Beautiful plant Muscari

Mouse Hyacinth - herbaceous perennial. Other names of the plant: Muscari, Snake and Serpent Bow, Grape Plant.

Scientific names: Eubotrys and Botryanthus. Latin name: Muscari from the word "musk". After a series of successful works, this name was given to the plant by the botanist F. Miller.

This representative of the flora belongs to the flowering department, Monocotyledones class, family Hyacinthaceae and Asparagaceae.

The homeland of the mouse hyacinth is considered to be South Africa and Asia. Over 65% of all subspecies grows in the Mediterranean areas.

To date, the plant is selected in Australia and the USA. The main growth occurs in sunny forest glades. The plant loves overgrown shrubs and trees, slopes with high grass. Hyacinth can be found in the mountains of the Russian Federation and the steppe zone in open areas.

general description

Mouse Hyacinth is early spring ephemeroid. Therefore, almost all his life the plant is in a sleeping state. The branches of the flower are elongated, shaped like an onion. The diameter of the flowers is 1.0-2.5 cm. The height of the branch reaches 5-7 cm. In spring, the plant throws out peduncles and small leaves.

The total height of the flower varies from 9 to 35 cm, depending on the subspecies. Leaflets narrow, elongated, lanceolate. Assembled in a dense outlet near the root system. Streaks are flat, weakly expressed, parallel. Leaf blades in the form of grooves. As the leaves grow, they begin to bend strongly.

Mandatory pruning this representative of the flora does not require. But if the flower grows in decorative beds, then from time to time remove yellow leaves and drooping flowers.

Most of the subspecies are unpretentious plants. Mouse Hyacinth has excellent rooting and seed growth. When planting, please note that flower loves sunny areas.

Planting is made in small groups of 15-25 pieces. If the planting material was purchased, the bulbs are pre-moistened with a growth stimulation solution. To do this, a suitable solution of Fitosporin will be suitable.

The distance between the bushes should be not less than 5-8 cm Planting depth - up to 7 cm. It is also necessary to consider the size of the bulbs. The larger the bulb, the more space must be left to the future plant. A small layer of 1.5 cm of black soil should be above the bulb. Do not bury the planting too deep. Otherwise, the planting will not rise and will rot in the soil.

On 1 square. meter is recommended to land 100-200 colors. If planting is done on a decorative lawn, then it is necessary to remove sod with a depth of 6-7 cm from the area. After that, the earth is well loosened and complex feedings are added in the form of compost. Next, planting material is planted. After a successful procedure, the cut out lawn is returned to its original place. Do not press the ground too much.

Important!

During the growing season, perennial recommended to feed once in 20-25 days. To do this, the complex purchase suitable fertilizer for window plants. In the fall or winter, the plant does not need top dressing.

Conditions for hyacinth

Optimal temperature for growth - above 18 ° C. This representative of the flora loves warm, sunny weather. It can withstand frosts down to minus 15 ° С.

Mouse Hyacinth prefers bright lighting. Отлично переносит попадание солнечных лучей. Может произрастать в тени, но в этом случае цветение будет скудным. При произрастании в домашних условиях в зимний период может обходиться без дополнительной подсветки.

Breeding

The plant propagates by seed. Method of distribution of planting material - Mirmecochoria - with the help of ants. The seeds of this plant have eliosomes - fatty appendages.

It is thanks to these enzymes that the plant attracts ants. Insects pick up flower seeds and bring them to their nest.

Insects eat only Eliosome - the top of planting material. And the seeds themselves are thrown out of the anthill. In warm weather, seeds begin to grow in the new territory. Also the plant multiplies vegetative way - daughter bulbs. They are kept in a solution of growth stimulant and planted in the ground.

This plant blooms in the middle of spring, depending on the region of growth.

Flowers of this representative flora looks like small bells. They are in dense inflorescences. The length of the tassels reach no more than 9 cm. Therefore, this plant is compared with lilies of the valley. Perianots, depending on the subspecies, have a snow-white, amber, pale pink or purple hue.

See photos like hyacinths bloom beautifully and what colors are their inflorescences:

Top flowers are sterile. Their fragrance attracts insects that pollinate the plant. Therefore, Mouse Hyacinth refers to entomophilic pollination. Perianth simple form, actinomorphic. It has 6 accrete barrel-shaped petals. On the flower is 6 stamens with purple or blue anthers. Pestle single. Ovary is at the top. It has 3 carpels. The fruit of the plant in the form of a three-chamber box.

Shelter for the winter does not require a plant. But in order to avoid freezing, the flower can be made mulching. A covering material is poured around the root system. You can use straw, wood chips, tree bark, dry grass, sawdust. Mulch must be spread out on the surface of the earth. Before the procedure, the soil is loosened and abundantly watered. You can also mix the soil with the purchased land for strawberries, cucumbers or tomatoes.

Such protection prevents the evaporation of water from the soil, protects the root system from frost and freezing. With the right ratio of mulch, nutrients, vitamins and soil acidity are preserved. Thanks to the mulch, weed growth is slowed down or eliminated, and the effective work of microorganisms is improved.

Reference!

Mulching protects Mouse Hyacinth from pests. But you can not make mulch too high, because the dry material can serve as a burrow for rodents.

Benefit and harm

Small flowers adorn the floral composition. They give bouquets an enchanting atmosphere. They are also used in landscape design. These beautiful flowers decorate the spring flower beds.

Due to continuous flowering during the month, the plant looks great against the background of an emerald lawn or a sunny lawn.

Flowers look great in combination with daffodils, lilies of the valley, dwarf tulips, crocuses, primroses, glades, hazel grouses, forget-me-nots or chionodoksami.

Growing Conditions How to Plant and Care for Muscari

Muscari flowers planting How to care for mouse hyacinth

Muscari multiply very quickly, forming luxurious flower carpets. During the season one maternal bulb forms a whole nest. One rule for all garden species should be observed - they do not tolerate stagnant melt water, lowlands. The rest of Muscari grow without problems on any sites. Attitude to the sun's rays does not matter much, since the period of their active vegetation falls on the time when the other green cousins in the neighborhood are only going to wake up from hibernation and in no way interfere with our shoots.

  • When planting, it is worth counting on the fact that the mouse hyacinth will grow without transplant for several years in one place, and it is good to fill the soil with organic matter and compost.
  • At the bottom of the landing holes should be poured a little sand.
  • Onions buried to a height equal to its three diameters.
  • Watering is not relevant for viper onions - moisture in the ground is enough after the snow melts.
  • If the plants have not been transplanted for several years, they should be fed with complex fertilizer during the flowering period, after thoroughly moistening the soil.

Why do not muscari bloom?

When to dig up muscari

If there is a deterioration of flowering or its termination - The plant only releases leaves, it is an impetus to the fact that it is time to replace the curtain and divide.

It should be borne in mind that a place in Muscari at the beginning of summer may turn out to be empty, it can be taken by annual representatives of the natural kingdom or combined with other perennial plants that bloom much later.

Do I need to dig muscari? How the mouse hyacinth winters

Winter-hardy varieties do not require special treatment in preparation for wintering. If you are not sure that the planted variety is winter-hardy, it is enough to cover the landing site with spruce leaves, fallen leaves or any covering material. Dig viper onions is not necessary, unless you are going to distill the flowers at home.

Mouse hyacinth at home

Muscari flowers planting and care at home Muscari photo at home in a pot

Muscari are widely used for forcing. For this fit only healthy, the largest bulbs. They are dug up after the leaves disappear from the surface of the earth, cleaned from the remnants of the soil, sorted, dried at room temperature and stored until September. Purchased bulbs can not handle - they are ready for planting.

  • The main condition for growing mouse hyacinth on window sills is the correct temperature.
  • First, they are stored in dry sawdust or wrapped in paper or cotton wool.
  • 3-4 months Muscari kept in low temperature mode.
  • 35 days kept in cold conditions with a temperature of 9 degrees, then the temperature is reduced to 5 degrees.
  • Two weeks before the end of the cold content, a dense planting is placed in pots with a usual earthen substrate, deepening the bulbs by 2 cm, so that the top of the head can see the light.
  • After the allotted time, the pots are transferred to a warm, bright window sill.
  • The soil is moderately watered. Flowering will occur in 15 days - The lower the temperature in the room where Muscari is located, the longer the flowering will last.
  • After distillation, plants can prikopat in the garden.

Planting muscari in spring

Muscari flowers planting and care photo

Sometimes you have to transplant muscari at an inappropriate time - during flowering, in spring. They sometimes grow actively and interfere with other cultures. Gently shovel undermined a flock of Muscari and transferred to a more convenient place, which is prepared in advance, making organic fertilizer. The hole is made according to the size of an earthen coma with muscari, which is carefully transferred directly onto a shovel, sprinkling soil around the circumference. After this, water the plants thoroughly. Usually with this method of transplanting muscari bloom again next spring without problems.

Growing Muskari Seeds

Growing Muscari from seed to seedlings photo

Most muscari species breed by self-sowing. With cultural content, this type of breeding is rarely used - flowering will occur only after 4 years.

  • For propagation by seeds, you can use your own seed.
  • Give the seeds to ripen in the fall, after harvest, sown in the garden.
  • In the seedling method, stratification is applied (seeds are kept in the refrigerator for about 3-4 months before planting, be sure to moisten and wrap in a wet cloth, placing it in a bag). A good time to start stratification is October. In February, carefully plant the seeds in containers.
  • Seeds are buried at a depth of 1 cm.
  • Care of seedlings requires careful attention - weeds, soil crust, poor soil are unacceptable. All this adversely affects their development.
  • Watering moderate to prevent rotting of the roots.
  • At the end of March, hardening is performed, leaving the seedlings on the street to get used to normal conditions. In early-mid-April, when the ground ripens, seedlings are planted in a permanent place.

Diseases and pests

Sometimes they can be affected by diseases and pests. Tlya is familiar to all gardeners. The primary source of aphids are garden ants, which spread it around the site and create whole colonies of these pests. Fighting ants - a pledge of lack of aphids. To combat aphids apply soapy water. It forms sticks to plants, forming a protective film that prevents the spread of aphids.

Soap solution can be used as a prophylactic against any pests. For this, a piece of laundry soap is rubbed on a fine grater, dried, poured the resulting powder into a container and used as needed. It is added to water in 1 tbsp. spoon on the bucket, carefully stir and irrigate from the watering can any plants after watering. For greater effect, you can use tar soap or add birch tar to the composition. If you use this tool all the time, the pests will forget the way to your site.

The spider mite leaves a thin web of spiderwebs on the leaves. To combat it, use an insecticide.

Field mice love to feast on the bulbs of mouse hyacinth. For scaring can be planted next strongly smelling or thorny plants.

Aphids and spider mites can carry diseases. The most dangerous diseases are mosaic or onion yellow dwarfism virus. The leaves of these plants turn yellow without time, have a depressed appearance, they have a whitish stripe and speck. Affected flowers cannot be treated. They are dug up and destroyed so that the disease does not spread further.

Application

Muscari in official medicine does not apply. They have many useful properties, but because of their toxicity, they are used by traditional medicine only externally. In some Asian countries, they are used as a wound healing, painkiller, anti-aging agent. Essential oil is used in cosmetology as an antiseptic, bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, disinfectant. Effective as an aphrodisiac.

With the arrival of spring, these tiny plants fill our gardens and sites, admiring the graceful buds that echo the azure sky of spring. Muscari are great in massive plantings in flowerbeds. Unusually combined with flowering shrubs in mixborders. They should be planted under large trees to revive pristvolnyh circles. Its blue color creates a wonderful addition to daffodils, tulips, primroses, and irises in miniature flower arrangements.

Muscari in vases look elegant and bright. For the New Year holidays are used for forcing. Blue tassels of earth lilac perfectly fit between large plants, they are very effective in multi-tiered compositions. Many consider muscari a shabby plant that does not deserve any attention. But there are a great many of such plants in our gardens, and with good care they serve as a better decoration than many new-fashioned flowers, which still need to be taught to our conditions. And muscari bloom and delight the eye every spring, not delivering any problems to their owners.

The original plant from Southern Europe, North Africa, is considered to be a weed in places of growth. The peduncle arrow appears in June from an outlet with 3-4 belt-like leaves. Flowers collected loose brush with a tuft, which is a bundle of sterile bright purple bells on long pedicels. The fruitful water-jug flowers are light brown with a cream edging. The height of the plant at full flowering is about 70 cm. The daughter bulbs are formed weakly - they multiply due to abundant fruiting and self-seeding.

This type of Muscari looks great on lawns, in flower beds with perennial flowers, against a lawn. The variety Plumozum ’is popular, which is distinguished by purple inflorescences on highly branched stems.

Plant description

Viper onions, muscari, mouse hyacinth - these are the main names of the same plant. More recently, a perennial bulbous flower was attributed to the Hyacinthus or Liliaceae family, now the mouse hyacinth is in the Asparagaceae family.

The name Muscari is given a flower because of the characteristic smell reminiscent of musk.

Viper onion flower called accidentally, one might say, because of ignorance. The flower often grows in sunny, clear glades; there, among the plants, snakes are often seen. Many unknowingly believed that reptiles feed on the leaves of the flower. However, it soon became clear that snakes are indifferent to grasses and flowers, and crawling out on the glades to soak up, bask in the sun.

The prefix in the name "mouse" appeared because of the tiny, tiny look of bright purple and blue inflorescences.

In addition to the accepted, the main names of the flower there are also popular names:

  • in Europe, the plant was called grape hyacinth, because tightly planted buds in appearance resemble a bunch of grapes,
  • in France, Muscari is called earthen lilac, the name stuck because of the similarity of color and shape of dense inflorescences with purple flowers of unblown lilac,

At the beginning of the growing season, up to seven leaves are produced from one bulb. Depending on the type and variety of basal leaves can be formed in spring or autumn.

Stem - peduncle upright, bare, dense from one bulb-head, most often, one leaves, less often two peduncles. At the top of the stem a dense, dense, many-flowered, racemose inflorescence 2–8 cm long is formed.

The flowers are small, fragrant, on short pedicels, tightly pressed against each other. The shape of the buds resemble a jug or barrel with six short teeth bent outwards. Miniature flowers can be compared with flowers of lily of the valley, only densely sitting on a stalk. In most cases, the color of the buds is blue or purple, there are varieties with white, pink, yellow, combined colors.

Seeds are formed only in the lower part of the inflorescence, since apical flowers are barren. The fruit is a three-winged, winged, angular seed boll. The seeds are dark, small, rounded, wrinkled, retain their germination for about one year.

The flowering period depends on the type and variety, climatic zone of cultivation. Plant early flowering, mainly from April to the end of May, you can see delicate miniature flowers. Breeders obtained new varieties, the flowering of which can be observed until mid-June. Duration of flowering not more than one month.

Muscari completely undemanding plant, bravely endures shortcomings in the care. Can easily exist without much attention to his person from the florist.

The mouse hyacinth is an excellent honey plant, its pleasant smell attracts many bees, butterflies and bumblebees to the garden.

The flower has a wide distribution throughout Europe, Western Asia, North Africa, in the countries of the Mediterranean region.

The most likely to see muscari in grassy slopes, among the shrubs on the edges of the mountain-forest zone. Some species have naturalized in North America and Australia.

Gentle, miniature plants bloom throughout the spring. The beginning and duration of flowering depends on the type and type of hyacinth, as well as the growing conditions. The earliest flowers can be observed as early as April. Breeders brought new varieties, the flowers of which you can admire in early summer. By combining different types and varieties with a different flowering period in the flowerbed, it is possible to achieve the flowering of mouse hyacinth throughout the spring, in the best case, until mid-June.

On a bare, strong stem a racemose is formed with densely planted buds on thin stalks. The flowers are small, neat, resemble round lanterns or berries. Wild species are predominantly purple and blue shades of flowers, in a culture you can grow plants with white, blue, pink and yellow flowers.

After flowering, the mouse hyacinth falls into a "hibernation", which lasts most of the year.

Species, varieties and varieties

As of 2014, a little more than 40 species of mouse hyacinth, Muscari, are known. On the territory of Russia and the former Soviet republics there are about 20 species. Most of which are grown, as ornamental, in flower pots at home and in home gardens.

Due to the diversity of nature and the work of breeders, Muscari has many varieties and varieties. They differ in the shape and color of the buds, the length of the stem and leaves, the flowering period. Not all mouse hyacinths are early-flowering, there are representatives of the genus, whose type of flowers can be admired from the end of May - in early June. And also it is possible to divide muscari by popularity, into general pets and rare, little-studied species.

Muscari broadleaf

In its natural habitat, it grows and is found in a limited area in the western and southern forests of Turkey. Despite this, the flower has gained wide popularity among lovers of garden flowers. Broadleaf hyacinth, a very thermophilic look, it does not tolerate cold drafts, and can freeze in winters with little snow. For the cold season, the plant needs additional shelter.

Starting from the middle of spring, an arrow with a flower comes out of the bulb, the height of which can reach 25 cm. The inflorescence is taut; about a hundred small, elongated, berry-shaped flowers are formed. In itself, the inflorescence has a cylindrical shape, the color of which at the top of the head is light violet, smoothly passing to the base with a darker violet hue. Duration of flowering about 25-30 days.

The egg-shaped bulb is up to 2 cm in diameter and up to 3 cm in length. Leaves, lanceolate, large compared to other species, up to 2.5 cm wide and up to 15–17 cm long. The leaf plates are strong, grow upwards and, as it were, embrace the peduncle, resemble tulip leaves in appearance.

Muscari pale

The species is rarely found in home gardens and flower shops. In its natural environment, it grows on the mountain slopes and subalpine meadows of the Caucasus and in the territory of eastern Turkey.

From one oval bulb-head, up to 3 cm long and up to 2 cm in diameter, up to six narrow, belt-like leaves grow up to 20 cm long and 0.5 cm wide. With the onset of cold weather, the leaves die off, becoming an additional shelter for the winter. One bulb is able to produce one, rarely two peduncles up to 12 cm long. The inflorescence is formed from 40 small, elongated, oval flowers of pale blue color almost white. You can admire the beautiful, delicate flowers of Muscari for 15–20 days in the second half of May. In culture, on the territory of Russia, it is extremely rare.

Muscari Osh or Muscari Tubergen

Very beautiful and neat look. The inflorescence is small, formed of densely planted barrel-shaped flowers. A distinctive feature of the species - in the color of buds. On top of the flowers are painted in pale blue or light blue color, on the lower, most of the inflorescence, flowers of a more contrast, dark color with white teeth. Flowering time is in the middle of April.

The bulb is small, ovoid, almost rounded up to 1.5 cm in diameter and up to 2 cm long. Leaves narrow, linear up to 15–18 cm long and up to 0.5 cm wide. Usually one bulb produces up to three leaves and one peduncle up to 25 cm long. In winter, the leaves fall, creating additional cover for the winter.

Muscari Pretty

It blooms in late winter - early spring. Because of this feature almost never grown at home. In the natural environment can be found in South-West Israel and the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea.

The leaves are narrow, the edges are bent, forming a narrow slit. The plant is miniature, together with the peduncle up to 15 cm in height. The egg-shaped inflorescence is formed by densely planted elongated flowers of bright blue color with white bent teeth.

Ambrosia Muscari

View muscari with interesting large buds, collected on a strong, erect peduncle. Each bud has an elongated shape, tapered at the end. Flowers on short petioles, planted loosely. One peduncle has 20–50 flowers, the color of which changes with time. So, at the beginning of flowering, the buds are purple, gradually turn pale, brighten, acquire a greenish-yellow tint, at the end of flowering they become cream.

The plant is small, about 10–25 cm in height. The leaves are dark green, linear, grooved, dense up to 2 cm wide, the length equal to the peduncle. The flowering period is at the beginning - the middle of spring.

Blue spike

The young variety from Holland, recognized as highly decorative, is often used in landscape design and floristry. The height of the plant is 20–25 cm. The cystic inflorescence is voluminous, terry, formed by 150–170 small, blue, fragrant flowers. Unlike the natural species, the Blue spike variety has several buds on the same pedicel, because of which the inflorescence takes the form of a “shaggy” panicle. All flowers are sterile. During the season, the plant forms up to 3 daughter bulbs. It blooms in May for 20-25 days. Vegetation of leaves begins in autumn, which does not fall off and hibernate under the snow.

The variety is representative of the Armenian muscari species. The maximum height of the plant during the flowering period is 20 cm. It blooms in May for one month. The flowers are bright blue with white prongs. The buds are elongated, densely planted on a straight stalk. The variety is quite popular, often used for landscaping gardens and growing at home.

Little studied and rather rare type of mouse hyacinth. It was found in the mountains of Turkey and Northern Iraq. Plant height not more than 20 cm. Leaves, narrow up to 2 cm wide, long, belt-like, dark green. In one inflorescence of the order of about 50 flowers of cylindrical shape, narrowed at the ends. The edges are serrated, bent outward. The species has been little studied and so far the question remains open, to which family it can be attributed either to hyacinth or prolesque.

Muscari neglected

In the literature, the species can be found under a different name - the unsung mouse hyacinth. At the beginning of the growing season, one or two bare peduncles come out of the bulb. Only after that, leaves appear. Flowers elongated, ovate-tubular, dark blue or purple, looks like large grapes. The teeth are rounded white. The inflorescence is oblong, dense, many-flowered. Leaves, narrow, up to 15 cm long, in an amount up to 6 pcs. out of the egg-shaped bulb.

Muscari neglected spread over a vast territory of Europe, Asia and Russia. Mostly found in the forest-steppe and steppe zones. In Russia, the species is included in many Red Books of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation: Belgorod, Volgograd, Kursk and Rostov regions.

Variety, representative of the Armenian Muscari. Pretty thermophilic flower, on Russian latitudes extremely rare. In one season, a single group of “daughter” onions is formed in one plant. Because of this feature, the variety quickly spreads and fills the nearest territories. Flowers, dark blue, elongated, with white edges. Blossoms in April - May. Plant height with peduncle about 20 cm.

Muscari azure

In different sources, the species is found under the name azure muscari. The plant is 15–20 cm tall. The inflorescence is small, up to 8 cm in length, formed of bell-shaped, cylindrical flowers of pale blue color, and the color of the flowers varies depending on the location. So, in the upper part of the inflorescence the flowers are lighter, in the lower part - darker. One inflorescence contains about 30-50 buds.

The plant blossoms is very interesting - at the beginning the lower flowers bloom, creating the effect of a “ballerina’s skirt”. Watch amazing fragrant, the flower can be in April - May. Homeland species - mountainous areas of northwestern Turkey.

Muscari comosum plumosum

An interesting sort of crested species of mouse hyacinth. The flowers are very different from the usual type of muscari buds. Open inflorescences, formed of filiform, purple-violet, sterile flowers. The form is unstable in the middle lane.

Muscari large-fruited

Radical leaves, dark gray-green, narrow, with curved edges. The buds are large, cylindrical or barrel-shaped, red-brown in color, as they open, acquire a yellow-green tint. The height of the flower together with the peduncle is 15–20 cm.

Muscari flowers - description

The bulbs in muscari are ovoid, with light outer scales, 1.5-3.5 cm long and up to 2 cm in diameter. Leaves - radical, linear, up to 17 cm long and up to six in number - appear in spring, but may appear again in autumn . Muscari grow up to 30 cm in height. Peduncle they leafless, the flowers are cylindrical, barrel-shaped or tubular perianth, consisting of six intergrown petals, bent along the edge. Color - from white to dark blue, length - about 0.5 cm and the same in diameter. Flowers are collected in dense inflorescences, racemes or apical, up to 8 cm long. The fruit is a winged, three-crested box, spherical or heart-shaped, with small wrinkled black seeds, which germinate only for a year. This genus has two significant advantages: almost all types of decorative elements and, moreover, Muscari are completely unpretentious.

  • Muscari Armenian.

Among the species most often cultivated is the winter-hardy Muscari, Armenian, or Colchian, which blooms in late spring for three weeks. It is called the "mouse hyacinth". The upper flowers in its inflorescences are sterile and have a lighter shade than the lower ones, dark blue with a white border. Muscari Armenian exudes a pleasant aroma. The most popular varieties are:

    • Muscari Terry Blue Spike - exceptionally beautiful due to its many flowers (up to 170 flowers in a large inflorescence), unpretentious, can be used for cutting.
    • Christmas pearl - with very beautiful purple flowers,
    • Fantasy Creation - very beautiful due to the combination of blue and blue-green shades.

    Muscari is ugly-shaped.

The form of muscari is ugly-shaped, it is found in the alpine belt of southern and central Europe, and is one of the most sought-after culture in 1576. The flowers of the ugly form are smaller than those of the Armenian. In addition to the varieties of the usual blue color, there are two garden varieties:

    • var. album - Muscari white, clusters, as if from pearls,
    • var. carneum - a variety of pink.

    Cute muscari

    - Hebrew name Kadan Nae (beautiful) found in the parks of Ashkelon. Flowering begins in winter: short dense ovate inflorescences of bright blue flowers appear on low peduncles. The limbs are white.

In addition to these species popular in floriculture, there are many others: long-flowered muscari, changeable muscari, ambrosia muscari, white-eyed muscari, large-fruited muscari, strange muscari, many-flowered muscari, densely flowered muscari, muscari racemes, and so on.

    Growing Muscari in the garden

Muscari are very popular in floriculture. They look great both in rock gardens and in decorative garden vases, and low-growing varieties are successfully used for borders. Muscari is very beautiful in multi-layered beds, in combination with other spring flowers: against the background of densely growing muscari of lilac-blue color, the islands of higher early flowering tulips or daffodils look very impressive. Great combination of blue muscari with orange grouse.

Like all early spring flowers, Muscari blooms when there are no leaves on the trees and shrubs, so light will be enough for them anyway. Muscari grow in one place for several years, so plant them next to perennials, which you will not replant either every year. The soil is best loose, fertile and permeable. It is desirable that the site was on elevation and was protected from strong winds.

    When to plant muscari.

It is better to plant muscari in autumn, until the end of October. They are planted in groups as soon as muskari bulbs are dug up, which grew five years or more in one place. If you buy them in a store, carefully inspect the shoots: they must be healthy. Sometimes in April, nurseries sell seedlings of muscari that are already flowering in boxes, and sellers claim that they can be planted immediately in the ground. Try it.

    How to plant Muscari.

Before planting, inspect the bulbs and remove the darkened and damaged. Disinfect the bulbs for prophylaxis: first etch them for half an hour in a two percent solution of karbofos, then the same in a one percent solution of potassium permanganate. The day before planting the Muscari, thoroughly pour the prepared wells, soaking through the entire layer of soil. Before planting, add river sand to each well for drainage. If the bulbs are large, they are immersed in the ground by 7 cm, and the distance between them is 5-10 cm. Small bulbs are buried by 3 cm, and the gap between the bulbs is 2-3 cm.

How to care for Muscari in the garden.

Care for Muscari is not difficult: it is an educational plant for a novice grower. In irrigation, muscari need only the very beginning of the growing season, but, as a rule, at this time the soil is still wet after melting snow or spring rains. And the rest period does not require soil moistening. If there was no snow in winter and spring was dry, then there is a need for regular watering.

If the soil in the plot is not too fertile, this can be corrected by fertilizing with organic fertilizers. It is possible to fertilize the soil in the fall when digging with compost or compost: 5 kilograms of fertilizers are used per square meter. Subject to the regularity of such an autumn digging with organic matter, muscari can grow in one area for up to ten years. But then they will have to set them up anyway.

    Flowering Muscari.

Muscari blooms a little longer than three weeks, and does not require special care at this time, just loosen the soil slightly after watering, trying not to damage the bulb, remove weeds and remove faded flowers if they spoil the look of your flower bed. If over the years the quality of the flowers has deteriorated, then it is time to transplant the muscari.

    Transplant Muscari.

Вегетативное размножение мускари путем отделения от материнской луковицы деток проводят, как правило, во время осенней перекопки, где-то от середины до конца октября. When we transplanted muscari, we have already written - after 5-6 years of growth on one site, although when it’s really time to dig up muscari, you will be prompted by the look of your flower bed. Muscari bulbs are removed from the ground, children are separated from the parent bulb (there can be a lot of them, up to 30 pieces) and are seated in a way that has already been written above.

    Pests and diseases Muscari.

Most often, muscari suffer from mosaic caused by the yellow dwarfism of the onion virus. Symptoms: green mosaic on the leaves, a shortened floral arrow, narrow leaves, and oppression of the growth of the patient specimen. Sometimes the plant is infected with ordinary cucumber mosaic, which is expressed by pale green strokes and spots on the deformed leaves. These viruses are transmitted by aphids and, once in the bulb, they remain in it. Therefore, the affected specimens must be excavated and burned so that the infection does not spread to other plants. There is no treatment for viral diseases yet, so fight the peddler - aphids, destroy it as soon as it appears on the plants. The method is simple and has long been known: dilute 2 teaspoons of liquid soap (Gala, Fairy) in two glasses of water and spray it with a solution of the plant. Sometimes the trouble of muscari delivers spider mite. In the fight against it, use drugs of the avermectin group (vertimek, actophyte, fitoverm) strictly according to the instructions at an air temperature of 18 ºC.

    Muscari after flowering

Many flower growers believe that it is not necessary to care for muscari at all: they do not get sick, they multiply themselves, they are hardy enough. But experience teaches that a good result always takes effort. As soon as muscari ottsvetut, you need to carefully remove the flower stalks and feed them with liquid potash-phosphorus fertilizer, which will help the bulbs to winter well. Gradually reduce watering until the plant leaves turn yellow and wither, and as soon as this process is completed, do not water the plant again. Autumn is the time of digging the area and transplanting muscari that have reached the age of five. If your muscari is too young to divide and transplant, simply remove the yellowed leaves from the site. Young planting muscari, especially if they grow on it next to other onion bulbs, must be mulched for the winter with peat.

    Storage of muscari bulbs

Muscari - perennial plants, moreover, they can grow in one place for up to ten years in a row. But if for some reason you decide to dig up the bulbs and store them in the room, remember the following rules:

    • - it is necessary to dig out the bulbs only when the leaves of the plants start to dry,
    • - dug onion need to be dried for several days, then put in peat or in wet clean sand,
    • - once a week, inspect and feel the onions and immediately remove rotten, damaged or soft,
    • - humidity in the storage is preferably 70%, temperature - 17 ºC.

But let us remind once again: Muscari is best planted in the fall, while digging the plot, at the same time it is convenient to carry out the separation of children from the mother bulbs with subsequent seating, so it makes no sense to store muscari bulbs indoors until spring.

    Home care

Unpretentious, charming flower will perfectly fit into any interior, will bring a special spring freshness and comfort to a city apartment, an open balcony or terrace. Growing mouse hyacinth in a separate flower tank will not be difficult. For these purposes, choose a container with a large number of holes at the bottom, to remove excess water and eliminate stagnant liquid. Drainage material - claydite, broken brick or crushed shells of nuts is laid first in the floral container. Next, fall asleep loose, fertilized, permeable soil. Bulbs are planted in the wet ground.

One of the features of growing muscari at home is a short growing season. The plant is kept indoors only at the time of flowering. After the flowers wither and the leaves dry, the pot is transferred to the garden and partially buried. This procedure will allow the plant to form onions. A flowerpot of muscari stays in the garden until the end of winter.

With the beginning of spring, the pot is returned to the room, the bulbs, along with the earth, are transplanted into a new flower tank or the pot is placed in a beautiful pot.

Even despite the unpretentious nature of the plant, its maintenance at home requires much more attention and strength, compared to its counterparts growing in the open field.

Muscari can be called a flower for busy people. Those who love the beauty around them, but are not able to give it due attention. Flower endures tolerant deficiencies in the content. The only time when the plant needs care is the flowering period. Hyacinth needs strength to open a flower. During this period, the soil around the muscari should be kept moist. It is extremely dangerous to flood the flower planting sites, it is very susceptible to excess and stagnant water.

Long stay in wet ground can cause bulbs to rot.

After 1.5-2 weeks, after the start of flowering, you can weaken attention to watering the flower. Especially after flowering, hyacinth goes into “sleep mode” and there is enough natural precipitation for comfortable growth of the plant.

    Features Muscari

Egg-like Muscari onions have light-colored outer scales. In the diameter of the bulb reach 20 mm, and in length - 15-35 mm. The length of the basal linear leaf plates reaches 17 centimeters, they grow on a single copy to 6 pieces. The leaves grow in the springtime, but in the fall they are able to reappear. In height, such plants can reach about 0.3 meters. On the leafless peduncle there are flowers, whose perianths are barrel-shaped, cylindrical or tubular in shape, consisting of 6 intergrown petals, bent along the edge. The color can vary from dark blue to white. The diameter and length of the flowers are 5 mm. These flowers are part of the dense inflorescences of the apical or racemose, which in length can reach about 8 centimeters. The fruit is a three-winged winged box with a heart-shaped or spherical shape, they are small wrinkled seeds of black color. Seeds remain viable for 12 months after harvest. The virtues of the Muscari genus are that almost all species have a high decorative effect, and such plants are distinguished by their unpretentiousness.

    Muscari long-flowered Muscari dolichanthum

Blossoms in late April, azure flowers. The egg-shaped onion bears 4-6 ribbon-like leaves and a flower arrow with a height of 14-16 cm. Perianth with white cylindrical teeth. Hailing from the mountain belt of the Western Caucasus.

Muscari racemose or unnoticed Muscari Rasemosum = Muscari neglectum

Primroses muscari blue cultivation and care When to plant a Viper onion overlooked photo

It differs little from other fellows, except by the fact that its flowers are slightly larger and densely pressed against the peduncle. Breeds self seeding and children.

    Thinning

Having planted a mouse hyacinth once in a garden, in 3-4 years it is possible to find a fairly densely overgrown area. Muscari is thinned as necessary when the flower has grown and in case of transplanting to a new location. To exclude self-seeding, after flowering, the arrow with the seeds is cut.

    Fertilizer and dressing

To maintain active growth, bright and lush flowering, the plant requires additional feeding. In the spring, when digging, organic fertilizers are applied to the soil per 1 square meter of 4–5 kg of raw materials.

In order to provide the flower with all nutrients, compost is introduced into the soil in the fall. This will allow the bulbs to gain strength, survive the winter and wake up in the spring.

In the potted muscari culture, fertilizing is necessary twice a month for the growing season. Use a special liquid combined fertilizer for domestic ornamental plants.

Hyacinth is a long-lived, in one place can grow 8-10 years.

    Soil requirements

Amazing perennial very tenacious, able to take root on the ground with any texture. If you aim, to provide the flower with ideal growth conditions, then first of all a loose, fertile soil is selected. Earthen substrate must pass water well, stagnant fluid is detrimental to the plant.

    Planting and breeding

The mouse hyacinth is propagated in two ways - seeds and daughter bulbs. The plant a lot and often "creates" new bulbs, heads. In this connection, the vegetative method, an easier way to multiply the hyacinth. Especially in flower shops, it is more often possible to meet muskari bulbs, rather than seeds.

A flowering plant, grown seeds, comes much later, compared with the reproduction of bulbs.

It is better to buy material for planting in specialized stores, where the chance to purchase low-quality goods is minimal. In any case, before planting the bulb should be treated with fungicidal agent. Practically in every house there is potassium permanganate powder, a weak aqueous solution of which will help relieve seed material from possible diseases and pests.

    How to plant?

In the prepared place, they make indentations 5–8 cm at a distance of 5–10 cm from each other. They put the onion into the hole, sprinkle it with earth, so that the layer of earth above the bulb is about 2 cm. Plant the mouse hyacinth in groups of 10-30 onions, and the plants do not thicken. Single landings are not as spectacular, even at home, several muscari are planted in one flower pot.

    Growing from seed

This method of obtaining new plants extremely rarely resorted. Since the first flowering can be seen in 3-4 years. The first 1-2 years goes to the formation of bulbs. Seeds, with good germination, are formed only on the largest and healthiest flowers.
Sowing seeds carried out in the fall. In the prepared beds or containers with the ground, seeds are buried to a depth of 0.5-1 cm. During the whole time, before the emergence of shoots, they periodically water, remove weeds, carefully loosen, feed.

    Vegetative breeding methods

Muscari often and many forms daughter bulbs that are used for the reproduction of hyacinth. By the end of the growing season, during transplantation, young bulbs are separated from the main bulb. This method allows much faster to get a new plant, compared with seed propagation. If you do not plant a flower, then in 2–3 years you can get a thick flowering carpet.

    Soil preparation

Hyacinth can grow on almost any soil. However, each grower seeks to create ideal conditions for the growth and development of garden plantings. In the case of mouse hyacinth, prepare the soil with a variety of organic substances and an acidity index in the range of 5.8-6.5.

To make compost or humus soil, the plant responds with a brighter, more saturated color and a long flowering.

Strongly overgrown plants should be divided or completely transferred to a new location. For this, with a shovel, they dig in a large group of muscari. Take out the bulbs, keeping the "native" clod of the earth. The roots are fragile, so try not to shake the ground off them. Planted in a new place, plentifully watered. Transplantation is carried out in the autumn, after the end of the vegetative period.

    Wintering and storage of bulbs

If the dug onions are intended for storage, they are treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, dried indoors at a temperature not higher than 20 Сº. Store in a cool place. If the planting material is purchased in a specialty store, then they do not need additional disinfecting treatment with fungicides.

The healing properties of the Muscari plant

Due to its healing properties, Muscari is used in traditional medicine. However, it is not pharmacopoeial; it is not used in traditional medicine.

Due to the pleasant aroma, mouse hyacinth has found application in perfumery and cosmetology. Muscari essential oil for cosmetic purposes is used as an antiseptic, bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, effective as an aphrodisiac in sexual weakness and frigidity.

Despite the many beneficial properties of muscari, one should not forget that all parts of the plant are poisonous.

From the fresh petals of flowers prepare alcohol tincture, used for external use (lotions, wiping, compresses). Alcohol extracts are used for the care of fading, problem skin, with acne.

Viper onion has received wide application in Asian traditional medicine, where various preparations from the plant are used as a wound healing, anesthetic and anti-aging remedy.

In aromatherapy, muscari essential oil is often used. Possessing a sedative effect, it has proven itself in the treatment of disorders of the nervous system.
During painful and heavy menstruation, in traditional medicine, muscari syringing is used.

Plant-based preparations are used only externally, ingestion may cause poisoning. The plant is poisonous (especially bulbs) its use for medicinal and cosmetic purposes should be careful. Contraindications to external use of muscari are the period of pregnancy and breastfeeding, children's age, idiosyncrasy.

Working and contacting with Muscari, you should protect the skin from the sap of the plant.

    Muscari Crested (Muscari comosum)

Very spectacular view. In the wild it prefers to grow among shrubs, on forest edges, as well as on dry meadows. On the peduncle is the crest, consisting of purple flowers with stem-shaped arcuate. This type looks very impressive on the lawns or lawns on the background of groundcover grass. The most popular variety is Plumozum: shoots are strongly branched, and they have a large number of sterile flowers of violet-lilac color.

    Muscari Osh or Tubergen

In nature, you can meet in Northwest Iran. Flowering occurs in the middle of spring. Blue flowers have teeth of a brighter color. Good drainage is required. The most popular among gardeners is the Tubergen variety, which has flowers of a paler color, and the shape of leaf plates in it is sickle-shaped.

    What time to plant

The landing is recommended in the autumn until the last days of October. Planting plants is best in groups, and it should be noted that only those Muscari bushes that have been grown in the same place for 5 years or longer can be planted. When buying planting material in a specialized store should pay special attention to the condition of the shoots. They should not be signs of disease. In April, sometimes in nurseries you can see muscari seedlings, which are already in full bloom, while sellers assure that these plants can immediately be transplanted to a permanent place. You can try to follow their advice.

    How to land

Before embarking on a landing, it is necessary to inspect the onions, while removing those that are injured or darkened. For preventive purposes, planting material must be disinfected, for this it is placed for 30 minutes. in solution karbofos (2%). Then it is taken out and immersed for half an hour in a solution of manganese potassium (1%). Also 24 hours before planting onions, planting holes must be prepared, they should be poured abundantly so that the entire soil layer is wetted. Before the landing, the bottom of the wells is covered with a layer of river sand, which will serve as a good drainage. Large bulbs are buried by 7 centimeters in the soil, while between instances leave a distance of 5 to 10 centimeters. Small onion need to be buried in the ground for 3 centimeters, while leaving between instances from 2 to 3 centimeters of empty space.

    Care features

Caring for Muscari is quite simple, so this plant will be able to grow even a novice gardener. It is necessary to water such a flower only at the very beginning of active growth, however at this time most often in the soil there is a large amount of moisture after melting snow cover or after heavy spring rains. When the plant is at rest, he does not need watering. Systematic watering is needed only if the winter period was little snowy or there was very little rain in the springtime.

In the event that a small amount of nutrients are contained in the land at the site, then it becomes necessary to apply organic fertilizer to the soil. So, in the autumn, during digging, compost or humus can be applied to the soil, while 5 kg of fertilizer is taken per 1 m 2. If in the autumn time such fertilizer is systematically applied to the soil, then muscari can be grown in the same area for 10 years. However, in the end, you still have to transplant these plants.

Flowering lasts a little longer than 20 days. At this time, you should only regularly loosen the surface of the soil (after watering), while you need to be very careful not to injure the onion. It is also necessary to produce timely weeding and, if necessary, tear off fading flowers. Если вы заметили, что со временем цветки у растения стали утрачивать былую декоративность, то это означает, что мускари необходимо рассадить.

Мускари можно размножить вегетативно с помощью деток, отделенных от материнской луковички. In this way, the plant is propagated in the fall at the very time when the area is being digged (from the middle to the last days of October). Transplantation should be made only those bushes that grew in the same place from 5 to 6 years. However, to understand that Muscari needs to be seated can also be by its appearance. The bulbs must be dug, and then separated from the mother's children (there are up to 30 of them). Then the bulbs will need to be planted in the manner described above.

    Diseases and pests

Very often, this plant has a mosaic, and it occurs because of the yellow dwarfism of the onion virus. In the infected specimen, a green mosaic can be seen on the surface of the leaf plates, and they themselves become narrowed, the flower arrow shortens, and the growth of the plant itself is inhibited. In some cases, Muscari is infected with the usual cucumber mosaic, in this case the leaves are deformed, and light green strokes and specks appear on their surface. Data carriers of viruses is aphid, and if it is in the bulb, it will remain there. In this regard, all diseased plants must be excavated and destroyed to stop the spread of the virus. For the purposes of prophylaxis, it is recommended to timely destroy the aphids at the site. To do this, you can use a soap solution. To prepare it, 2 large boxes of soap (Fairy, Gala) must be mixed with 0.5 liters of water. When spider mites appear, the plants should be treated with the avermectin group (Actofit, Vertimek, Fitoverm), should be sprayed at a temperature of 18 degrees, while strictly following the instructions.
