Geranium - unpretentious plant, it will be great to grow on any windowsill. It has only one, but a significant minus - the flower is drawn up very quickly, without proper care, its appearance becomes not very attractive: the plant turns into several long knotted branches, devoid of leaves.

That is exactly what happened to my first pelargonium - unfortunately, it began to look unpresentable, and I had to throw it away: I cut off a new plant from the top and grew a new plant from it.

It is in this way that almost every year many flower growers come in, but I think that this is wrong: you can save your geranium, while making its appearance only better. It makes no sense to destroy a good flower, if you can form a spectacular bush in just 15 minutes.

And you can do this with a simple clerical knife: geranium tolerates pruning, it becomes more spacious and spreading after this procedure. In this article I will tell you how to properly cut geranium for lush flowering for the winter.

Our favorite geranium: autumn pruning for lush flowering

I emphasize again: you have no alternative to pruning. If you don’t follow your geranium bush, it will quickly lose its shape, in just a couple of seasons. The lower part of the stem loses leaves, the green remains only on the top of the plant. Therefore, if you do not plan to part with your pelargonium, then you should master the technique of trimming plants for the winter.

The problem is that geranium always stretches upward, and without your help will not be able to give side shoots. And only pruning (or a more gentle procedure - plucking) will help to form a beautiful crown and stimulate the growth of side shoots.

When you cut a plant, it helps to wake the buds that are sleeping in the trunk, which cannot be activated any other way. In addition, this procedure contributes to the formation of new buds in the future: it is noticed that the geranium, which was pinched or cut, gives more inflorescences and looks much more elegant than a bush, which was only watered, but not subjected to cutting.

As a backup option, if you missed the time of pruning and your flower still looked ugly, you can cut a couple of young cuttings from the top of the plant and grow new geraniums. It should be remembered that if you run your geranium completely, then it will be useless even in terms of planting material, it may simply die.

Geranium Trimming Technology

What kind of shoots we will cut depends on the shape of a particular bush. But there are important universal rules for pruning a flower, the same for all varieties of geranium, including ampelous geranium (creeping).

The correction of the plant form is usually carried out twice a year - in spring and autumn. Consider the autumn pruning of geraniums, when we are preparing a flower for winter rest. Most likely, your geranium over the summer has grown, and the trimming procedure will be healing for her.

The procedure should be carried out after the last inflorescences fade. For different regions it will be different times, but most likely, your pelargonium will fade until November. In any case, you need to have time to trim before the beginning of the winter months (until December). In winter, the plant is resting, at this time it can not be disturbed.

For the procedure you will need a clerical knife (it is quite sharp and thin at the same time). You can also use the blade, but the usual knife or pruner is undesirable, these tools can mash the plant. It is best to disinfect your instrument with ordinary alcohol or vodka.

You should also prepare in advance another means for disinfection - crushed activated carbon. And ideally, it would be good to prepare a phosphate fertilizer to immediately feed the trimmed plant.

If you have a nice bush that has not yet lost its shape, then we simply support it with a trimmer. In this case, we remove the yellowed and wilted leaves, cut off the side shoots with a knife, leave only the healthiest and strongest.

Depending on the volume of the bush, you will cut from 3 to 6 lateral shoots. From the top, too, should get rid of, but in this case (if the height of the bush suits you), cut off only the topmost escape.

If your geranium has already lost its shape, then we will almost completely cut off the main stem, leaving only a small stump (about 10 cm). Do not worry, geranium is a very hardy and life-giving plant, it will gladly release new sprigs from the remaining hemp.

What is important to remember:

  • Cut no more than 20% of green mass, otherwise the plant will be difficult to cope with stress. Do not overdo the trimming!
  • We do not do pruning later than December, because in winter geranium should rest, gain strength.
  • Significant pruning postpones flowering time, because it is stressful for the plant, but in the end you will get a lush crown.
  • Long twisted branches can be immediately completely cut off (we leave the trunk about 10 cm high).
  • Immediately after the pruning procedure, it is necessary to process the cuts with crushed coal and feed the plant with fertilizer.
  • In the summer months it is useful to periodically pinch the geranium - that is, to remove the top, this will help the plant to form a beautiful, spreading crown.

After the autumn pruning of the geranium, you should carefully monitor the state of the slice: if it turned black, it began to rot, it means that you need to prune the stem again at the same place, cutting off the darkened area. In this case, the knife should be especially well sanitized and crushed activated carbon or ground cinnamon should be used.

In this video you can get acquainted in detail with all the stages of pruning pelargonium for the winter.

Why is geranium pruning done?

Since among the room and garden geraniums there are plants with erect and lodging stems, tall and dwarf forms, ampelous and semi-shrub-forming species, each plant will have to choose its own approach.

But the main rule of pruning geraniums is a snap. It provides that attention to the length and growth of the stems should be constant, and pruning regular. The systematic shaping of the geranium bush, started shortly after planting, will help:

  • cause the emergence of lateral shoots and the formation of new rudiments of inflorescences,
  • give the plant a compact, even shape
  • make flowering more lush, long and stable,
  • get high-quality planting material for breeding your favorite variety.

You should not wait for a sprout to extend for a season or two, and the foliage on it will remain only at the top. The specificity of the geranium is that this plant is extremely rare without outside intervention gives lateral stems, but dormant buds are in each node. Pruning geraniums causes these buds to wake up and not only form a new stem, but also lay flower buds.

Technique of cutting geraniums for lush flowering

How to cut geraniums to make it bloom? The flowering and good condition of the plant, first of all, depends on the quality of the pruning performed. Therefore, to remove excess or dried stems must be sharp, disinfected instrument:

The cut is performed on a leaf node facing the outer side of the bush. In this case, the emerging shoots will not interfere with each other and will not cause excessive thickness of the crown.

If you need to remove the young stem, you can do without tools. Pinching is done with dry clean fingers, trying not to pull the shoot and not to damage its surface layer.

In order to avoid rotting or damage by pests, the cut sites are sprinkled with pounded activated charcoal or charcoal. At home, when pruning geraniums in the spring and after flowering, it is convenient to use natural antiseptic cinnamon powder.

After pruning the geranium, plants can be fertilized with a nitrogen-containing compound. This will cause the accelerated formation of greenery and shoots.

How to prune geranium in the fall?

When the formation of new flower stalks is completed, and the existing inflorescences gradually fade, it is time for the autumn pruning of geranium. Before this procedure, the goal is not only to form a beautiful bush, but also to improve the plant.

First of all, all wilted flowers, damaged or dried stems and leaves are removed. This will make it possible to facilitate subsequent work and save the power of the plant when the active growth of new shoots begins. After a visual inspection of the geraniums for lush flowering, pruned, weak, bare stems, spoiling the appearance of the bush, are pruned and shortened.

When choosing a cut, it is important to remember that shoots are formed from dormant buds in the nodes, and there is no need to leave long internodes on the tops.

In the fall, restful plants are pruned by about a third. Do not be afraid of such a deep pruning geranium. During the winter, with good lighting and compliance with the conditions of maintenance of the plant, they all catch up and form a new healthy growth. Bush geraniums for better branching shoots pinch after every fourth bud.

The process of pruning and pinching painlessly for geranium lasts until December. Then the plants are left alone. In the darkest season, the culture is most vulnerable, it grows worse, and all external influences are perceived as stress.

Spring pruning geraniums at home

In the spring for lush geranium flowering pruning is not as dramatic as in the fall. Such work should begin in the last days of February or at the very beginning of March. In this case, it is dangerous to delay. The later extra shoots are removed, the later flower buds will form, and bloom will come.

How to prune geranium in the spring so that the consequences do not affect the summer flowering of plants? To do this, it is enough to remove only long or weakened stems, cutting them out so that at least 2-3 buds are preserved from below.

How to prune geranium to get a stem plant?

Before cutting the geranium and forming a miniature stem tree from it, the lateral branches are removed from the bush, and the selected stem is tied up in several places to a firm support fixed next to it.

Geranium stems are quite fragile, so the garter of the central shoot to the vertical support must be taken very carefully. The barrel is fixed in several places so that the support can withstand the weight and escape, and the growing crown.

At this stage, the shoot does not need pruning until its height is slightly above the support. A nip of the central shoot will trigger its branching. From the stems formed, 5–7 are left to create a lush, even crown of the future tree on their basis.

As with the pruning of the geranium in the form of a bush, after the formation of every fourth leaf shoots pinch, which over time allows you to create a living and extremely original decoration of the interior or garden. Since the plant is intensively pruned, it is necessary to wait for the first inflorescences not earlier than in a year when the crown is formed. For lush flowering, pruning geraniums and pinching a couple of months before this stop, to allow the plant to lay buds.

Beauty and riot of colors!

Pelargonium (popularly known as geranium) got its name due to the unusual shape of fruits that resemble the crane's beak. From the Greek language "geranios" translates as "crane". To date, more than four hundred varieties of geranium are known, but only about one hundred species grow and safely grown in Russia.

On the windowsills of homes and offices you can find a variety of types of room geraniums, which differ from each other in the shape and size of leaves, buds and color. Among the many species are the six most popular:

  • Angel - gives a pleasant aroma and pleases with a long flowering period.
  • Ampelskaya - it is characterized by the presence of long branches, therefore, it is more suitable for disembarking in suspended pots.
  • Royal (royal, Martha Washington, noble, home) - characterized by the presence of a dark spot located on each petal of a large flower.
  • Fragrant - has a persistent aroma. Different varieties have different flavors - rose, wormwood, lemon, vanilla.
  • Zonal - flowers have a double color with a sharp and clear transition.
  • Gorgeous (blood red, garden) - suitable not only for planting at home, but also in the garden. It has a strong root system.

With proper and constant care, geranium will bloom constantly and wildly, each year increasing the number of inflorescences. But what is meant by proper care?

What is the need to correct the shape of the plant?

Regardless of which flower you are dealing with - indoor or garden - geranium pruning is necessary from the very beginning of its landing. Depending on the species, the branches of the plant can be long - dormant or erect, as well as short and sloppy.

To give the flower the desired shape, you need to systematically monitor the newly emerging shoots and in time to pruning.

Despite the fact that geranium is very unpretentious, it is not able to independently produce lateral shoots, although there are plenty of sleeping buds on them - they are located in each node.

Pruning contributes not only to the formation of a beautiful shape, but also activates the growth of new lateral shoots and contributes to the emergence of new buds inflorescences. Thus, the plant will gain strength and every year its flowering will be more lush and long.

Such a plant will not give good planting material for reproduction and may soon die. Therefore, pruning at home is one of the basic rules for the care of geraniums.

How to cut geranium correctly: step by step instructions?

No special tools are needed to cut the geranium.. You will need a clerical knife (you can replace it with a blade or even a thin kitchen knife).

Scissors and secateurs are not suitable for this procedure, as they pinch the stem of the plant in place of the cut. Before cutting, the instrument should be treated with a disinfecting solution so as not to infect the fresh wound.

As such a solution can serve as ordinary ethyl alcohol. Alternatively, you can boil the instrument for several minutes.

Pruning geraniums should be carried out on time - not too often, but not at long time intervals, and at suitable times of the year. It is impossible to cut a lot of shoots at once, or to carry out this procedure in winter, but is it possible to prune geraniums in summer? Geranium trimmed in spring and autumn. But here there are some differences that need to be remembered, intending to ennoble the plant.

Giving the desired shape in spring

Before proceeding with the nibbling of the geranium, it should be well inspected and carefully thought out the desired shape of the flower. Having prepared the tools and processed them, you can safely get to work.

  1. Remove yellowed and dry leaves by hand, gently cut off the weak and injured twigs.
  2. Gradually cut the side stems, leaving the strongest and strongest.
  3. Remove from the remaining stem lateral lower shoots.
  4. If the stem is too high, you must carefully remove part of the apex.
  5. If the stems are crooked and long, they need to be cut, leaving only 10 cm. After a few weeks, young leaves will appear in place of these stumps.
  6. When maintaining a bud on neighboring stems, it is important to pay attention to the direction of its growth - it must be opposite to the main stem.
  7. Apply disinfectants to the cut sites - wood ash, ground cinnamon, crushed activated charcoal.

After cutting the geranium in the spring, it will give new inflorescences a few months later than when bringing this procedure in the autumn, as the plant will recover longer. If necessary, pinching in the spring months, you can remove up to 20% of the shoots, so that it is lush. Abundant pruning may affect the timing of the next geranium bloom.by sliding it up until next season.

Autumn nipping

Autumn pinching is the best option, as the plant will need less time to recuperate. Sections are carried out with a sharp disinfected knife at an angle of 45-60 degrees directly 5 mm above the leaf node.

Cut only those nodes that have the direction of growth opposite to the main stem.. New shoots of these buds will not grow up, and will be sent to the side, which will prevent thickening of the crown.

Before you begin, you need to prepare the tools and carefully examine the flower, examining its shape and location of the stems.

  1. All cuts are made only above the leaf node. Shoots that grow into the bush, interbreed or dry - immediately removed.
  2. First, the outer stems are cut so that you can reach the center.
  4. Apply ash, crushed activated carbon or crushed cinnamon to fresh wounds - they have a disinfectant property.
  5. To support the flower, make fertilizer with nitrogen content in the soil (for information on what should be the composition of the soil for room geranium, whether the universal soil is suitable, read here). Provide a sufficient amount of light and heat for the upcoming wintering (how to care for home geraniums, to save it in winter and whether it is possible to move a garden flower to the basement, you can find out here).

Such pruning procedures are carried out to ensure that the plant feels comfortable, always pleased the owners with greens and bright colors. If the purpose of pruning was the formation of a certain form of crown, then it is important to take into account several features.

How to achieve lush flowering?

The frequency and duration of flowering domestic geranium depends on its type, on the conditions in which it grows, and, of course, when pruning is done. To be fluffy, you need to prune geraniums in the fall..

If during the winter the stems stretch too much, do not touch them. At the end of February, you can shorten them by only 2/3 of the total length, and in the spring you can nip it.

If we are talking about a large and dense plant, then you can not cut a lot of stems at once, since all the forces of the flower will go to restore the stems and leaves. It is enough just to shorten the loose stems so that the flower will once again acquire a beautiful shape.

Lush bush is obtained with constant care and systematic nip. If you need to achieve lush leaves, you need to trim the outer stems under the hemp, leaving them small - 7-10 cm

Then the flower will be able to produce new inflorescences, and in the place of hemp new young leaves will appear. In the future, you just need to shorten long stems just above the leaf bundle, from which then the young shoots and leaves will go.

Team Tree Shaping

The first step is to remove the side shoots, and fasten the central stem in several places to a vertical support.

Pruning of the escape is possible only when it exceeds the height of the support.. Due to frequent pinching, the central trunk will branch, which will allow to further form a magnificent crown.

Further care

After pruning care is needed at home: Fresh geranium wounds must be covered with wood ash or activated charcoal.. The minimum watering will be optimal, since the amount of foliage has significantly decreased, which contributes to long-term evaporation.

It will not be superfluous to feed nitrogen fertilizers that will help you recover from stress and stimulate the growth of new sprouts beautiful flowering). Every plant needs to be looked after.

Geranium, being unpretentious in terms of watering and climate, requires constant attention and systematic pruning. The shape of the bush, the duration and frequency of flowering directly depend on how frequent and competent will be pruning.

Pruning geraniums: a description of the procedure

Pelargonium home is evergreen plant with straight or fallen stem, the height of which reaches:

  • 100 cm in tall form,
  • 17–40 cm in the mid-varieties,
  • 10−16 cm in dwarf varieties.

The leaves are green and almost round, with a heart-like base and jagged edges. Flowers, painted in delicate lilac, purple, white, pink, cream, burgundy shades with a diameter of 5−6 cm, are collected in beautiful umbrella-like inflorescences on a long peduncle.

Geranium bloom begins in the early months of spring. Under favorable conditions, usually pleases lush flowering until September. However, in order for the plant not to lose its decorative appearance, it needs to be cut and pinned in time and properly. Both of these procedures are beneficial for the health of the flower, and for lush flowering.

How to trim geraniums

Geranium can be grown at home and in the garden. But to winter the plant is better indoors. The winter months for a flower are a period of rest, when it only needs moderate watering from care procedures. Humidity does not matter much.

Location - well-lit window sill (without direct sunlight) and the temperature not lower than 12 ° C. Feeding geranium loves. Potassium is particularly useful to provide fluffy, long flowering.

And also needed pruning geraniums. True, it is stressful for a plant, so it’s not enough to know how to cut geranium properly. It is equally important to be able to choose the optimal time when it can be done without harming the flower. Although there is a more benign option - pinch the plant. In addition, both of these procedures solve one common problem - stimulate the formation of lateral shoots. The fact is that a flower alone cannot give them under any circumstances.

As far as geranium needs pruning, its appearance suggests. If the plant has a neat shape, not a bare trunk, not covered with leaves, then the flower can be cut off in spring. Long shoots of ampelous species of pelargonium without foliage and flowers also need to be cut.

Rare pruning of dwarf plant varieties.. We can talk only about the lateral shoots that violate the shape of the shrub.

King geranium pruning is carried out only after a strong growth. In the fall, shoots are removed from the plant, leaving a small shoot with buds.

And only the variegated geranium experts do not recommend cutting, because the plant does not tolerate a haircut.

Correct pruning ensures:

  • the emergence of lateral shoots
  • long flowering due to improved nutrient supply,
  • smooth, beautiful shape of the bush,
  • prevention of fungal diseases,
  • preparation for the rest period.

In addition, eliminating the geranium from excess shoots, florist gets good planting material.

Important:pruning awakens dormant lateral buds to form lush inflorescences.

After pruning, the cut should be treated with activated charcoal (crushed), possibly with garden brew, and also the home plant should be fed with nitrogen-containing fertilizer.

If pruning is carried out using a special disinfected instrument (a sharp knife with a thin blade, pruner) and with knowledge of technology, it will bring the expected result to the florist.

Tip:geranium trunk should be cut at an acute angle of 3-5 millimeters above the leaf node.

And you need to choose those of them that are directed to the outer side of the trunk, so that the new side shoots do not thicken the crown.

Crop and pinch the flower should be regularly, but this can only be done until December. At a time when light day is short, geranium becomes vulnerable. In winter, it is left alone, so as not to cause harm.

Pruning geraniums at home in spring

In early spring, immediately after the end of the rest period (end of February - beginning of March), the main, geranium shrub. This is the most favorable time for cutting a flower, as the plant is not in a hurry to grow. And slices have time to heal before the onset of spring vegetation.

In addition, pruning geraniums for lush flowering in the spring is not as radical as autumn.

Important:the later in the spring to remove extra shoots, the later the flower buds are laid.

The value of spring pruning cannot be underestimated, since the mistakes made are directly related to the summer flowering of the plant. That is why it is useful to know how to cut geranium so that it blooms magnificently and for a long time.

Before you begin pruning, try to think about what shape you want to give the flower. Then get to work:

  • carefully inspect the plant,
  • remove damaged twigs and yellow leaves,
  • Prepare a tool - a sharp knife, blade or pruner. Treat the work surface with alcohol. If you need to pinch the plant, wash your hands,
  • Choose a healthy, beautiful stalk. Remove the lower side shoots on it. Cut off other stems
  • shorten a very tall stem by removing part of its top. In this case, the geranium from the lateral buds grow shoots, and the plant will take the form of a tree,
  • long or crooked stems should be cut so that hemp turned up to 10 cm high. After some time, lush bushes form in their place,
  • treat sections with antiseptic - activated carbon, ash, cinnamon, green, alcohol solution.

Tip:should be cut to 20% of all shoots, so as not too delay the flowering time.

In addition, a home plant can spend a lot of effort to restore and does not bloom at all during the season. And also after pruning the geranium in the spring, try to create a flower favorable conditions. That is, water in two days, do not spray the flower and do not leave it in the draft.

Twice-a-month fertilizer “For flowering plants”. The room temperature should not be lower than 12 ° C. Spring geraniums can already be exposed to fresh air.

And one more important condition - she loves the sun, so the best place for her is the window sill of the south window.

How can you make a lush geranium

Compared to many indoor plants, it is unassuming to soil, temperature and watering a flower. But to preserve the shape of the culture necessarily require pruning. If we neglect this procedure, then very soon the number of inflorescences and the duration of flowering decrease in pelargonium.

Why geranium haircut

Every spring we can observe how the bushes and trees are trimmed on the central streets of the city, giving them the correct shape. But few people realize that this haircut is not only decorative. Plants pruned for healing and rejuvenation of the crown. The same applies to indoor specimens that are prone to intensive growth, such as pelargonium (geranium).

The purpose and benefits of pruning

The main purpose of pruning any plant - thinning the crown to improve ventilation, lighting and sheet power. Without this event, the geranium will have a neglected and unhealthy look, stop blooming, turn into a shapeless and untidy bush.

  • blooming period is extended,
  • the metabolism is accelerated and its quality is increased,
  • more lateral branches and young shoots are formed,
  • wintering is facilitated.

Geranium flowering time depends on the variety and runs from early spring to late autumn, and in some species even in winter. To inflorescence on the plant was a lot, you need to cut the bush, but do it correctly and in a timely manner, according to the characteristics of the variety.

For the formation of a beautiful bush and lush color geranium needs regular pruning

Autumn pruning is a more logical procedure than spring. From November to February, the geranium begins a period of rest. The plant often slows its development, while continuing to eat. In such a state, it is very difficult to contain a lush crown, haircut also makes wintering much easier. Cardinal pruning allows pelargonium to refresh the crown and form a bush again.

If your pelargonium blooms all year round, you can cut it at any time.

In the winter, geranium can be cut only if there are conditions for keeping the cut flower; at least two bottom leaves are left. After the crown of the plant is rejuvenated due to cardinal pruning, it is possible to form its bush during the winter by pinching and decorative pruning. Zone Pelargonium has the peculiarity of quick budding of buds and early bud formation, so she will only be happy with the haircut,

  • Pelargonium can be cut in spring and autumn. If during winter the bush is overly drawn, it is cut in late February - early March,
  • flower growers cut their own ampelous geranium at their discretion; if the plant does not need pruning, it is not touched until spring,
  • the variegated view is difficult to tolerate autumn pruning, it is easier for them to pass through similar stress in spring,
  • geranium mini varieties are not sheared at all. The crown of these tiny pelargoniums is adjusted only for reasons of beauty and decorativeness of the bush,
  • royal pelargonium is trimmed “under the stump” and placed in a cool place. But such a cardinal haircut is not regularly, and if necessary, because the plant does not develop as intensively as, for example, zonal geranium.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. If all summer geranium is contained in the garden or on the balcony, before autumn cutting it must be placed in the room a couple of weeks before the procedure (in order to give the plant time to get used to the new conditions). If you cut the flower immediately, the bush will experience severe stress and become sick, not having time to acclimatize.

Pelargonium, accustomed to street maintenance, must be acclimatized indoors before the trimming procedure.

The blade can be treated with any disinfectant.

The cut should not be torn

Before cardinal pruning can be thinned bush for convenience

Also for disinfection florist often use ordinary little green.

Trimming a branch of geranium is important above the leaf node, and the cut can be processed with ordinary greenery.

What is pruning and why is it needed?

The procedure for pruning geraniums is to shorten long shoots and remove old stems. It is necessary to do this not only in order to get new flower stalks, but also to achieve a beautiful plant shape. If you do not carry out pruning, the lower leaves of the plant begin to fall off, and the branches become bare, with the result that the flower loses its beauty.

Geranium has dormant buds in almost every node.however, it is not able to produce lateral processes without human assistance. Pruning awakens dormant buds, resulting in the formation of new shoots with flower buds.

In addition, control of the length of the shoots and the degree of growth of the bush is useful for:

  • stimulation of long and abundant flowering,
  • giving the plant an even compact form
  • accelerating the metabolism in the plant and improving its quality,
  • facilitating wintering geraniums,
  • improve aeration and lighting,
  • prevention of the occurrence of diseases.

If the geranium bush is very large, after a radical cutting of the shoots, the plant will put all its strength on the growth of new stems and leaves, because of which the inflorescences will appear late or not appear at all. To avoid this, large flowers need only shorten the sick, long branches without leaves.

When is the right thing to do?

Depending on the purpose for which pruning is carried out, there are three ways to carry it out.

  1. The main. The purpose of this pruning is to obtain abundant lush flowering and the formation of a beautiful shape of the bush. The main pruning is carried out immediately after the flower leaves the rest period. The most suitable time for this is the period from late February to mid-March, that is, until the beginning of the vegetative period. Geranium blooms after such pruning later than usual, but the flowering period will last longer, and the number and size of inflorescences will increase.
  2. Autumn. Since the plant is prepared for the rest period, it takes place after the flowering of geranium, around mid-autumn. All dry and yellowed leaves and flower stalks are cut off. Such manipulations do not affect the future flowering of the bush, but simply have a decorative character. Long stems are cut off as needed in the area of the first leaf node, and in order for them to sprout in the future and continue to grow - above the node. The main stem is shortened by a third.
  3. Topping. It is held if necessary at any time of the year except winter.

With a lack of lighting in the cold season, geranium is strongly drawn out, which negatively affects decoration and flowering. However, in no case can not shorten the shoots in December and January! This is the most difficult period for home flowers, pruning only hurts.

Preparation of indoor plants and tools

Before cutting, you need to prepare the instrument and the flower for the procedure.. For this you need:

  • clean the geranium from all dry, yellowing and withering leaves and flowers,
  • sanitize the instrument with boiling water, alcohol or a special agent.

For trimming the flower is best to use a blade, stationery or kitchen knife with a thin cloth. You should not use scissors - they can pass the stem and disrupt the structure of the tissue at the site of the cut.

Basic rules: how to shape a bush?

To obtain the desired shape of the geranium, you need to start forming it almost immediately after planting the flower., performing autumn and spring pruning and pinching. Young, actively developing plants should be pinched in order to stimulate the growth of lateral shoots.

  1. 2-3 weeks after the landing of the young shoots need to pinch the apical bud.
  2. The branches that grow from the upper bosoms of the stems are either removed or pinned after 3-4 leafy nodes appear on them.
  3. In order to avoid thickening, first of all pruning or pinching of the shoots growing inside the bush is performed.
  4. Once the plant has reached the desired shape, the pinching should be stopped.

If geranium is grown from a cutting, pinching should be carried out at the level of 8-10 leaves, and if from seeds - at the level of 6-8.

It is necessary to understand that all the work must be carried out, starting from the desired result. For example, in order to obtain a plant in the form of a blooming ball, it will not be enough to stimulate the growth of the side shoots alone. it is necessary to regularly remove the branches that spoil the decorative appearance of the bush и постоянно ухаживать за кроной куста, обрезая крупные и старые побеги на уровне 3-5 почки.

Что делать, если допущена ошибка?

Наиболее распространенные ошибки, которые допускаются цветоводами при обрезке герани:

  • Deadline. Strict adherence to the timing of pruning plants - a necessary condition. Because of the procedure in the winter period will begin to fall inflorescences.
  • Incorrect trim level. If you prune high above the leaf node, the excess part of the stem will wither, causing the entire shoot to die.
  • Radical pruning. If you remove too many shoots at a time, the plant will stop growing and flowering, restoring strength after the resulting stress.
  • Too frequent pruning leads to slower development of new buds.

Conclusion

Geranium is one of the favorite flowers of almost all flower growers. Caring for her is not difficult, and even a beginner can handle it. The main thing - to observe the plant, the appearance of which itself will inform you about the need for pruning and pinching. At observance of all recommendations, these procedures will not cause difficulties and will help to receive a beautiful, magnificently blossoming flower.

Pruning royal geraniums for lush flowering

Royal geraniums outwardly different from other members of the family Geraniaceae. The leaves of the plants of this variety are wavy, corrugated with dark stripes forming a wonderful pattern.

Petals of flowers of royal pelargonium - terry, glossy, amazing shades of pale blue, white and darker purple tones. Perhaps with rims, specks, stripes. Their diameter can reach 15 cm. And the height of a bush of a truly royal plant is 1 m.

A characteristic feature of the royal grade geranium is demanding care and short flowering. That is, only 3-4 months per season. Zonal-type geraniums bloom much more often.

Given this circumstance, it is important for owners of a large-flowered variety of pelargonium to be known - for its lush flowering, it is cut only in the autumn period. With this approach, you solve two problems - prepare the bush for the winter and select the best cuttings for growing the variety.

Trimming order:

  • preparation of the instrument (sharp garden knife, pruner) with mandatory disinfection,
  • pruning obsolete leaves. Shoots without leaves are cut off at the root in front of the first leaf node from the ground,
  • pruning main escape. It should be cut to 1/3.

Important:pruning in the fall is a necessary stage of care, concern for the health of the plant, a guarantee of lush flowering.

In the winter months for the royal geranium create conditions of comfortable rest and do not recommend disturbing her pruning in the period from December to January. If, however, the shoots grow on the flower in growth, in February you can remove one long process that spoils the appearance. The remaining stems are better to pinch with your hand without cutting off. In April, the first royal geranium appear inflorescences.

Important:Since the second half of March, it is not recommended to pinch and trim the plant.

The formation of a bush start after the flower completes the summer flowering.

Pruning of ampelous geraniums for lush flowering

Ampel geranium belongs to the "creeping" plantswhose long stems hang loose from a hanging pot. However, for a decorative view of the flower will have to follow. For this, the ampel culture should be constantly cut, pinching climbing stems. At the same time autumn pruning is especially useful for the flower, when the plant has completely flowered.

This procedure involves:

  • pruning dry inside shoots
  • removal of withered inflorescences,
  • cutting healthy stalks by 1/3.

It is also necessary to remove the shoots that sprouted from the leaves of the sinuses. And the stems grown from the root, do not need to cut.

Spring is the period when you need to properly form the crown of ampelous geranium. The overgrown bush pruned excess processes, leaving them a few buds. With the help of pinching the stem after the fifth leaf, they form the crown of the plant and thereby ensure the luxuriance of flowering.

Important:in blooming geraniums, it is impossible to cut more than 1-2 shoots.

Having received a stalk from a flowering plant, it can be immediately planted in the ground. Without germination in water.

How to pinch geraniums

By pinching a flower means removing the growing point of a plant. Its absence will lead to the emergence of side shoots that form the crown and make the geranium look like a small tree. The pinching procedure is carried out in any period, but not in winter. At this time, the flower is at rest. Exceptions are the varieties of pelargonium, which begin to bloom in the cold season, so pinching is not contraindicated for them.

How to pinch a flower

Pinching is done to enhance the growth of lateral shoots. After that, the bush becomes unusually lush.

How to pinch the grown stems:

  • time from the beginning of spring to the end of summer,
  • tool - tweezers or scissors,
  • inspect the plant, find lightly branched long shoots to pinch them.

The procedure is repeated during the summer several times.. As a result, new lateral shoots appear on pelargonium. They will form buds, and then flowers.

To increase the pomp of the already overgrown bush, you can also pinch it. This will make it wider and thicker.

Important: later pinching postpones the period of flowering.

The purpose of the autumn pruning

There are many varieties of geraniums: they are indoor or garden plants, with decaying or climbing stems, tall or short, bush or ampelous. For each flower, you need to choose your own method of pruning, comparing it with the desired forms that you would like to give pelargonium.

Geranium should be helped to form a beautiful bush

The ultimate goal of pruning geraniums - getting a beautiful bush with luxuriantly flowering buds. Associated - improvement of the bush.

For all types of geraniums, it is important to adhere to the main requirement: pruning and control over the shape of the bush should be carried out regularly. It is impossible to trim once and get the intended design. It is necessary to constantly form a beautiful geranium, starting right after its landing. You do not need to wait a year or two when the stems grow long and bare, keeping only a few leaves at the very top. Pruning leads to increased growth of lateral shoots and stimulates the conception of new inflorescences.

The right place for trimming geranium cuttings

The geranium itself, without human intervention, does not throw out additional lateral stems. But dormant growth buds are located at each node. Their growth should be provoked. After pruning the plant begins to grow compactly, without popping naked and ugly branches. In addition to lateral shoots, flower buds are also activated. Such geranium blooms longer and more magnificently than their neglected brethren. After completion of flowering, the bush produces high-quality planting material, which allows you to propagate your favorite variety of pelargonium.

Time spending

Pelargonium is a smart plant. She herself will tell you when to begin pruning. Geraniums are pruned after flowering has stopped on the bush and the last inflorescences have withered. If the plant is planted in the summer in the open ground or remains on the garden year-round, then remove half the height of the stem. If the flower spent the summer outdoors, before pruning it should be held for ten days in the room so that it becomes accustomed to new living conditions. Removing excess crown improves air circulation, the lower leaves open to sunny color. This reduces the risk of fungal diseases.

Geranium Blossom Shaped

Winter is a resting time for the plant, but not for the florist. It is necessary to monitor the state of cuts. If the cut is blackened, it has become an unnatural color, it is necessary to repeat the pruning, removing the non-healing wound on the stem.

Peculiarities of the procedure for different types of pelargonium

Determine whether you need pruning a particular plant, it is possible by its appearance. If the bush is compact, neat twigs, then pruning can be postponed until spring. For example, zonal geraniums often grow obscenely, exposing the trunk covered with leaves. Then, of course, pruning is required. Ampel pelargonium is beautiful with long shoots, but decorated with foliage and flowers. If the view of the plant is quite presentable, then it is better not to touch the bush until spring.

Spotted geraniums experience severe stress after pruning, so if you can not cut, you do not need to do it. There is an interesting variety - mini-pelargonium. The name itself indicates their miniature size. Therefore pruning for them is a rare event. Unless to remove something suddenly protruding from the overall compact design. Royal geranium needs pruning after a bush grows. In the autumn they cut off all the excess, leaving only a small shoot with buds.

Scheme of work

To remove geranium shoots need to be disinfected tool. This is a sharp knife (kitchen or stationery) or a blade. Scissors for this procedure will not work, as they pinch the stem. Cut the trunk of a geranium over a leaf node in three to five millimeters. The cut is made at an acute angle. Choose should nodules directed to the outside of the bush. With the growth of shoots from such a bud, the shoots will not lead to crown thickening, since they will tend to separation from the center of the bush.

Preserved shoots with a directionality of growth from the center do not lead to crown thickening

Features care for geraniums after pruning

Place pruning geranium stalks must be disinfected. For this suitable activated carbon. It is required to crush into powder, and then sprinkle the cut. Another remedy is wood ash. It is also a good antiseptic. Cinnamon powder is considered a natural stimulator of wound healing. They can also process the cut.

The treated plant must be fed with nitrogen fertilizers. This vitamin complex will help to cope with stress and stimulates the growth of shoots and greenery.

For the pomp of greenery and flowers, the plant must be fed

Watering is necessary to reduce. Since the green mass will remain quite small, the excess moisture can not evaporate. This can lead to disease and death of the plant. It is already weakened by the experience.

Crown formation

It is necessary to form the crown of geranium almost immediately after planting the cutting. The main actions to achieve this goal are pruning and pinching. If in the autumn geranium pruned, in the spring you can cut it or pinch. What is the difference? Pinching is the removal of a plant growth point. In its absence, the geranium throws the side shoots and turns into a small branchy tree. The first pinching is made on 8 or 10 leaflets. The time of its holding is the end of February-March. Side shoots also pinch as they grow. Tightening with spring manipulations with geraniums is not worth it. The later pinching, the longer the time until the colors appear.

Pinching young shoots accelerates the growth of lateral shoots

Spring pruning is a cut of large stems at the level of the second or fifth leaf from the root. The time of the operation is autumn or early spring.

Fundamentals of correct crown formation

  • Perform all manipulations with geraniums only with machined tools and clean hands.
  • The first step is to remove (prune or pinch) shoots that grow inside the shrub to prevent thickening.
  • With a large distance between pairs of leaves, the stem is cut immediately above the leaves, indenting up to five millimeters.
  • First of all, diseased shoots are removed, capturing up to five centimeters of the healthy part.
