Suvorov's onion is a rather unusual plant that grows in Asia and Altai. Because of its unusual appearance, such a bow is not very popular among gardeners., although the taste of the resulting crop is highly appreciated by many experts.
Description varieties onion Suvorov
The bow of Suvorov or Anzur belongs to the group of mountain bows with the common name of Anzura. In the literature, this species is also referred to as stalked onions, giant and tall onions.
Onion Suvorov is an early ripe crop that appears in the beds in early spring. At the beginning of its active growth, such a plant very much resembles a tulip, but after a while it becomes similar to pretty large garlic.
Bow of Suvorov or Anzur
The height of the stems can reach 1-1.3 meters, and wide leaves grow in length to 35 centimeters. On the tops of the onion shooter spherical inflorescences are formed, the diameter of which is 8-12 centimeters. The peculiarity of the flowers will be their purple color, not peculiar to other cultures. The green leaves of Anzur are considered the earliest greenery., but they very quickly lose their taste. After 2-3 weeks, the leaves begin to turn rough and yellow.
The first bulbs appear 2-3 years after planting. Their diameter can reach 14 centimeters. According to their taste, they are more like garlic, which is why they are often used as a savory, fragrant seasoning.
This variety tolerates frost, does not require special care and is not afraid of the effects of various diseases and pests.. But it is also worth noting that such a plant reacts poorly to an overabundance of moisture, from which the bulbs can rot and die.
The advantages and disadvantages of the variety
- Planted in the winter bulbs tolerate frost well and recover very quickly even after complete freezing,
- Gives very early harvest and can decorate with its unusual appearance a garden awakening after winter,
- Plant not afraid of disease and pests
- Properly cooked fruits have a wonderful taste and can benefit health.
Unfortunately, this variety has several disadvantages:
- First greens very quickly grows rough and becomes inedible,
- Raw bulbs are poisonous and can harm the body, before use, you must carefully treat them,
- Plant is afraid of moisturetherefore, you need to closely monitor this indicator.
The bow of Suvorov got its name in honor of the great commander, who, during his famous campaign in the Alps, discovered this unusual plant. The use of received fruits by soldiers saved them from scurvy.
The plant is very useful for the body, it contains several times more vitamin C than other varieties. It is also worth noting that the leaves of the plant are rich in vitamins B, E and rich in mineral salts.
Due to the content of steroids, alkaloids, saponins and other substances, Suvorov's onions are used in pharmacology for the production of certain drugs.
Due to its healing properties, in folk medicine the onion of Suvorov is used for the following purposes:
- Pain reduction with age-related diseases
- Treatment of upper diseases respiratory tract and lungs,
- Immunity strengthening and improving the overall condition of the body,
- Activation of brain activity and memory improvement.
Planting Suvorov bow
In order to get the harvest as early as possible and not to engage in laborious work related to the construction of seeds, experienced gardeners recommend planting onions or slices of Suvorovsky onion. For quality planting material, it is dug out of the ground, until the leaves are completely dried.
Given the good frost resistance of the variety, it is necessary to plant it in open ground in the fall. If work is carried out in September, then the fruit will be divided into 4-6 teeth, with a later planting the division will not be as intense.
Suvorov's onion and seeds breeds
When preparing the beds, it is necessary to take into account all the features of the cultivated plant:
- The best thing grows on loose, sandy soils. In clayey soil there is a high risk of fungal infections,
- Many gardeners claim that such a crop will grow well in places where cucumbers, potatoes or cabbage grew up to it,
- It is better to make bedsThis procedure will help avoid overwetting.
- Not worth planting in places of accumulation of precipitation and melt water,
- Before landing the earth is carefully loosened and cleaned of weeds.
With a standard landing pattern the distance between the rows should be 30 centimeters, and between individual plants 20. The depth of embedding the bulbs should be within 10-12 centimeters.
Growing Anzur from seeds is a very long and painstaking process, in which the first crop can be obtained only after 3-4 years. After collecting the seeds from an adult plant, proceed as follows:
Peduncle of Suvorov's onions with seeds
- at the end of October build beds of 10-12 centimeters high,
- seeds deepen by 1.5-2 centimeters,
- then landing cover 2-cm layer of peat or humus.
After yearling plants release cotyledon leaves, they will begin to dry out and form tiny bulbs. They need to dig, dry and leave until the autumn. With the onset of the desired time, the bulbs are planted at a distance of 5 centimeters from each other, the distance between the rows being equal to 25 centimeters. Sealing depth - 5 centimeters. Similar works are repeated twice. At 4 years old, you can land in the traditional way.
When watering the onions of Suvorov, one should be very careful and avoid even short-term waterlogging, because it can be detrimental to the plant. After each watering, the soil is slightly loosened and the weeds that have appeared are removed.
Suvorov bow is rather thermophilic
Feeding is produced as follows:
- with the advent of the first shoots necessary make nitrogen fertilizerssuch as urea,
- in order to enhance photosynthesis, 2 weeks after germination planting sprayed with Ferovit,
- 3 times for the entire growing season during soil loosening into it make ash and potassium sulfate.
To all the forces of the plant went to the formation of fruits, it is necessary to break off all the arrows that appear. Harvesting is carried out after the leaves dry.
The use of onion Anzur in cooking
The leaves of such a plant have found their use as early greenery. They include a large amount of vitamins and minerals. How to eat such onions, you ask. Young leaves are often used to make salads, soups and sandwiches..
Onions are eaten only after it has been processed for a long time. First you need to get rid of the sharp sulphurous smellFor this purpose, the fruit is poured with clean water and is periodically changed. On average, the whole procedure takes 1 month. After soaking the onions are marinated, baked or boiled with honey. Eat this food should not often and a little bit.
Suvorov's pickled onions
Diseases and pests
Diseases and pests do not settle on the bow of Suvorov, which is why this plant does not suffer from infectious, bacterial and other ailments.
The most common problem that can be encountered when growing a crop will be rotarising from the overmoistening of the soil. You need to deal with such a problem very quickly. All diseased plants are dug, and healthy irrigation is normalized.
Onion Suvorov is a very bright plant, which also brings useful greens and unusual taste of the fruit. You can grow this culture even in the most severe conditions., and the result should please every gardener.
To be honest, in the trash, which we have one for three gardening, I often look, because there are many things useful in the economy, you can pick up.
The composition of the dacha owners is now changing, the young people, instead of the old ones, begin to command at the sites, so they arrange general cleaning in houses and sheds, getting rid of all (in their opinion) stuff. I'm not the only one so smart, but that's not the point. New owners take out to containers and put in a separate pile and organic matter: mowed grass (its old gardeners also pick up for themselves), weed weeds and branches after pruning.
Then one day I walk past this Klondike and see that a funny plant flaunts on the side: an onion peeks out of the ground, and strong, bright green and resilient leaves are moving away from it. It became interesting to me, I ran home for a spatula and a basin and dug up this miracle. At the site, I rinsed the long roots of the plant in running water.
Strange, but juicy leaves after all these procedures have not lost their freshness - this is also bribed. I dug in a free place near the fence (on a pier between the bushes of a white wild rose) and covered it with humus.
And in the morning, a new surprise - the leaves of the “rookie” not only did not wilt, but even crumbled a little! And all I need is this: a bald patch at the fence is covered. And the more I did not indulge in the attention of this bush. And he grew to himself like a yeast, threw out flower stalks, and they bloomed with purple-blue buds on thick stems.
And then a woman, an insurance agent, passes by (a lot of them are poor, in summer she staggers around gardening - the work is piecework). Stopped at the fence, stared at this plant and asked: "Where are you such a wonderful Suvorov's bow bought? In our stores is not found. Specially ordered? "
Here are the ones on! I had to tell you where I “ordered” him and admit that I even had no idea what I was dealing with.
Bow of Suvorov - nothing but good
It was a long time ago, four years ago. Now Suvorov's onions are growing in my quality and decorative, and food culture. But many still do not know about its healing properties, they are almost like a weed (that is why I found it in the garbage bin - apparently, the young owners fulfilled and threw it away). But he is no price! It contains many beneficial trace elements, even from scurvy it helps.
Therefore, the leaves are mainly eaten, as they are extremely juicy during the awakening of the bulbs. And the entire stock of microelements is given to them by the bulb, which is better not to touch during the flowering and leaf formation, because it is very bitter. By the way, with the juice from the foliage, the soldiers of Suvorov maintained their strength when they made the transition through the Alps (this is where the name comes from).
And again I confess: I myself did not dare to try this onion for a long time, but the cat persuaded me. Poraila paw, and she began to sever podushku. My pussy, it seems, even the temperature of the beginning, did not eat anything. So I decided: cut off the green shoots, leaves, crushed in a red tulip and tied to the foot, and put the remnants of husks in a bucket of water. And what do you think? In the evening, my kitty leaned over the bucket and let it sip on this water with greed! It was here that I believed that the onions of Suvorov would bring nothing but good. Now I let it on salads and put it in fresh cabbage soup with cabbage and sorrel, cutting off only the brightest and juicy leaves. I tried to freeze - it turned out, only the "raw materials" lose a little in color. <становится сизоватым),="" но="" в="" блюдах="" все="" равно="" выглядит,="" как="">становится>
The bow of Suvorov loves loose soil, and so that the bed is higher, he does not tolerate, when the roots of even rotten grass remain in the ground - there will be small leaves spun.
So I plant it on bulk ridges. In the spring I dig them onto the spade bayonet, pick the roots of the weeds and tamp the soil. The bulbs are always planted in one row, I make holes at the distance of my palm from each other. Planting material in the soil is not buried, but just sprinkle on top.
Then I moisten the soil (I do not water it!) - I pour one glass of water on ten bulbs. If more - rot, already tested. It happens that frosts occur during planting, but it doesn’t matter: in the evening I lay out a small pit of raw aspen near the flower beds, which slowly smudges itself until morning and protects it with its smoke. Somewhere in the middle of May, onions go sharply in growth. Powerful stems appear, the leaves vyzhivaet in length almost to the size of the blade hand spit.
And here the main thing is not to miss, three or four days, and the leaves will fall bitterly (and the bright color of flower stalks and flower rosettes also indicates that the time has come).
So I get both the first garden gathering and the first billet at the same time. Another important observation: the leaves withered, the flowers withered - and the raw bulbs no longer serve food, although they will yield a crop of green mass next spring. I dig up the bulbs and until the autumn dry in the attic. They can crumble, roll out, but all summer should lie in a quiet place.
There are, of course, gardeners who pickle these bulbs or salt them. And I think: why? They are bitter and empty, there is no zest in the taste. Isn't it better to feast on the fresh, amazingly fragrant and juicy leaves of Suvorov's onion when their turn comes? And at the same time admire the huge purple inflorescences of massive emerald arrows!
It may seem strange, but for some reason, the ants are very fond of Suvorov’s onions, in the spring they slip to the landings in columns. But I have a short conversation with them: I brew a very strong tea, add a few drops of valocordin to it and spray plantings. Ants then all summer I do not see.
Onion Suvorov: planting and care - tips and reviews
Bow of Suvorov - savior of the army
Seeing at the end of June, one of my acquaintances had a decorative mountain onion (anzur) with buds proudly towering above the ground with a diameter of up to 12 cm, and asked for the bulb of this miracle for himself. She, too, was gigantic!
The rest of the summer kept it in a dry place before landing in September. Occasionally checked to prevent pests. With the arrival of autumn, I chose a garden bed for sand (with loamy) light soil. He planted a bulb to a depth of about 12-15 cm, watered well, slightly compounded with compost.
Since the onion of Suvorov is very winter-hardy, it withstands even the most severe winters, did not cover it for the winter anymore. In early spring, almost from under the snow, green shoots began to appear, wide leaves were similar to the feathers of winter garlic.
He watered the soil regularly and loosened it, feeding him twice a month with liquid complex fertilizer (according to the instructions). Soon the "shooters" shot, carrying large inflorescences-balls consisting of many small stars of pink-purple color. I fed them with potassium sulfate (10-15 g / sq. M), and also ash is suitable as a potash fertilizer.
I decided to cut off the faded “balls” so that the plant would not spend the strength to ripen the seeds, but to grow more bulbs and children. When the leaves were completely wilted, around the 20th of June, I dug a bush, peeled the bulbs off the ground and put it in storage in a box, sprinkled it with dry sawdust. In September, the landing process will repeat again.
It is not necessary to dig the bulbs of this plant annually. It is enough at the end of the growing season (in the second half of June) to simply cut off the tops, lightly plow the earth around, sprinkling fresh nutritious soil. It is possible to divide overgrown nests in 2-3 years, transferring to new places in the autumn, after drying. For the winter in relatively harsh regions, it is desirable to cover the fir branches. Olga SURINOVICH, Agronomist of the Botanical Garden of the BSAA
It is a living legend that the combat capability of the army of A. V. Suvorov was saved thanks to this bow - the soldiers were saved from scurvy. In honor of the great commander of the plant and is called - onion Suvorov.

Anzur has a round bulb with a diameter of 10-15 cm - It is very similar to garlic, only larger. If you plant the seeds of the plant, the bulb will grow in a couple of years. A few years after planting the bulb will give daughter slices, which are used for further reproduction of the plant and food. If you find in the literature a description of a giant or stalked onion, understand what exactly Suvorov’s bow means.
The broad leaves of the onions grow 35 cm in height (they are lowered down), and the arrows do 1.3 meters. The inflorescences are spherical, 10 cm in diameter, purple in color. The flowering period begins in early spring. First, shoots can not be distinguished from tulips, but as they grow, they begin to resemble more gigantic garlic.
The flowers of the onion of Suvorov are not only beautiful, they are wonderful honey plants. Onions ripen in June and July. The fruits of the mountain onion are the same as those of garlic - these are boxes, each of which contains three seeds. Even with one arrow you can collect a sufficient amount of seeds.
The advantages of growing Suvorov onion
- Beautiful - the variety is suitable as an ornamental plant. Large and bright inflorescences revive any flower bed.
- Delicious - savory taste and aroma of Anzur will add raisins to the culinary dish. Useful properties of the plant will appeal to those who follow a healthy diet.
- Useful - contains many vitamins and minerals necessary for all body systems.
- Early sowing - this is the very first plant in the garden, which will delight you with fresh greens in spring.
- Tenacious - onion is not afraid of frost, disease and pests.
Anzur tastes like garlic and radish. It is used as a savory aromatic and flavoring seasoning. In cooking, arrows and leaves are used, from which spring salads are made. They are added to meat dishes and soups, including okroshka. Onion wedges use in the preservation and preparation of marinades. The young leaves of Anzur are frozen for future use - although it acquires a gray color, all its useful properties are preserved.
Young leaves can be used to make sandwiches. Plov with marinated anzur is popular in Uzbekistan. In Samarkand, there is even a plant in which Suvorov canned onions are manufactured industrially. The taste of the finished product far exceeds the pickled cucumbers.
The plant loves loose sandy soil. In clay soil, onions are more likely to become infected with a fungus and rot. It is noticed that the anzur grows well in areas where in the past they grew cabbage, cucumbers or potatoes. Beds do bulk - this will prevent the accumulation of melt water and precipitation and, accordingly, waterlogging of the bulbs.
- Growing from seed. The most time consuming method. To grow full teeth, you have to wait 4 years. The only advantage over growing with bulbs is that you can grow many plants at the same time. Sow seeds in late October - early November. It is important not to lose money with planting: if you plant a bow too early, it will rise to frost, and with the arrival of winter it will simply freeze. Sow the seeds into the soil to a depth of 2 cm and cover with a layer of peat or other mulch. In winter, they will harden and become resistant to negative temperatures. The first shoots will appear in the spring during the thawing of snow. At this time, the plant will have only cotyledon leaves, which will wither by the end of spring. During this period, a tiny onion is formed from the seed with a diameter of not more than 3 cm. Before the onset of summer, they are dug out, dried and stored in a dark place until autumn. In September, they are again planted in open ground. In the second year there will be real leaves, in addition, the plant will release the arrow for flowering. At this time, the onion doubles in size, and its division into cloves also occurs. They are again dug up and stored until late autumn. On the third spring bulbs can be used as food. In the fourth year, the diameter of the bulbs will reach 8-10 cm.
- Growing bulbs. For this purpose, use daughter bulbs. If they are planted for the winter, the first harvest will be in the spring. The bulb is planted at a depth of 10 cm. In the future, the plant is tended in the same way as garlic. In the first warm spring days it is worth waiting for shoots. Anzur will rise, even if the snow has not yet come to the end. When the onions bloom, its leaves will start to dry - it's time to dig up the heads and apply them for their intended purpose. If you want the bulbs to keep the maximum of useful substances, break off the arrows before flowering. The work on planting the bulbs is carried out as carefully as possible, so as not to damage the hillocks.
Both bulbs and seeds are planted at a distance of 30 cm from each other and 20 cm from the second row. This is due to the fact that the onion tends to occupy a large area with its spreading leaves. An adult plant is transplanted every two years, otherwise a nest of bulbs will be formed.
Caring for Suvorov's onions is no different from garlic care. Here are what measures will be required from the gardener:
- Loosening the soil.
- Weeding from weeds.
- 2 weeks after germination to improve photosynthesis, the plant is treated with the preparation "Ferovit".
- Watering. Young sprouts are watered sparingly - the plant does not like overmoistened soil. Otherwise the bulbs will rot.
- Top dressing. Feed the onions of Suvorov with potash fertilizers - this will prevent premature yellowing of the leaves. Twice per season, the bulbs are fertilized with nitrogenous fertilizers or urea - they do it after the first leaves appear. Also in the soil you can add ash - it is a rich source of minerals.
Restrictions on use
- In addition to useful substances, the heads of Suvorov's onions also contain toxic components, so the plant is used moderately, carefully and only after heat treatment.
- In cases of diseases of the cardiovascular system, anzur will have to be abandoned in any form, as there are contraindications.
- Anzur leaves are used only the first few weeks after the appearance - later they begin to harden and turn yellow.
- The bulbs emit a peculiar sulphurous odor. To get rid of it, they need to soak, periodically changing the water.
Anzur appears first in the flowerbed. It is planted along ponds, paths and just in flower beds. So that the place is not empty after the onion leaves dry, summer flowers are planted next to it. When decorative growing considerthat this is a voluminous and sprawling plant that will take a lot of space on the flowerbed.
Anzursuvo bow includes 3 types of bows:
- Stalked onion,
- Giant look
- Bow of Suvorov.
Not everyone who sees this plant for the first time immediately becomes clear what kind of culture it is and whether it is edible or not with Suvorov’s onions. In biology, Anzur refers to the mountain bows. One of the important advantages of Suvorovsky onion, of course, its resistance to cold, it can endure very cold winters without loss.
The culture has rather large leaves, which reach a length of 35 cm. The onion arrows extend up to 1 m. The inflorescences are balls with a violet shade, the diameter of which is about 10 cm.
Suvorova onions need soil looseness and sandy loam. If the earth contains a lot of clay, there is a possibility of onion rotting due to infection with a fungus. It grows well where there were cucumbers, cabbage or potatoes.
On a note. The beds for onion Souvorova, or as it is also called the Anzur onion, are specially poured in order to prevent the accumulation of water as a result of melting snow or precipitation. The bulbs do not need too much moisture.
Anzur onions are planted in areas with plenty of sunlight, open and airy. As with many other cultures, the soil has been prepared for it since autumn. Preparation consists in harvesting what remains of last year's crop, as well as removing the roots that are brought to the place of burning.
Vegetative method of growing onions Anzur
From the description given above, it becomes quite obvious that it is quite difficult to grow a full-fledged alpine onion from seeds most often. It is much easier for this purpose to use planting material in the form of daughter bulbs or cloves. When the culture is almost dry, the bulbs can be dug. Almost always there are up to 3 teeth in the nest, but sometimes a rather large onion can grow.
Note! The bulbs in the ground are determined by fall, with a distance between plants of 20 cm. The indentation between the rows must be increased to 30 cm, and the depth of planting should be increased to 12 cm so that the bulbs are not very close to the ground.
Onions grow better, which were planted later, at the end of October, and not in September. In this case, full-fledged bulbs will be ready for the end of the next season.
Caring for Suvorov onions
Anzur - a plant that does not require any special and time-consuming care. The required temperature for the full development is from 15 to 25 degrees with a plus sign. Watering is required sparingly, without waterlogging, even for a short time.
Top dressings very well influence onions of Suvorov. He needs a large amount of potassium, so it is precisely such formulations that are used for fertilizer. If you do not miss him, the leaves turn yellow and dry.
The first dressing is carried out when shoots have just appeared. Nitrogen-rich fertilizers work well. Urea is also used, scattering it at the landing site with obligatory spilling with warm water upon completion of the procedure.
At the initial stage of sprouting, top dressing is done 2 times. After two weeks after germination, spraying with a preparation called “Ferovit” is used to help improve photosynthesis.
Also quite good and quite common means is feeding with potassium and wood ash.
How to harvest
When the foliage of sauvorovsky onion becomes completely dried, they begin to dig the bulbs. They are dried and calibrated in size. Large bulbs are preferred for food consumption, smaller fruits are stored for storage in a room where it is dry and cool for long-term storage of the crop.
It is quite acceptable to replant Suvorov’s onions not so often, namely once every 2 or 3 years, but it’s better to do this every year so that the culture forms nests that have large and medium
The task of any gardener in growing this variety of onions is to direct all possible forces of the plant to the formation of large bulbs, and the flowers and seeds do not exactly contribute to this. In order for everything to pass correctly, the arrows that appear must be deleted.
The use of onion Suvorov
Many gardeners prefer to grow Anzur as an ornamental plant, despite the fact that its foliage and bulbs are very edible. The bulbs are unusual in taste. They are a mixture of radish and garlic. The bulbs are distinguished by a sharp smell of sulfur.
In food without processing Suvorov onions are used quite infrequently. As such, it can do more harm than good. Before processing it must be soaked, and then Anzur can be cooked, boiled with honey, baked or marinated. For soaking the bulbs are dipped in water, it is possible with the addition of table salt, changing it the necessary number of times until the smell disappears.
Cooking onion Anzur
Mineral salts and vitamins that are found in the young leaves of Anzur, wholesome and juicy, cause their frequent use. They are sometimes compared with ginseng, so they have a beneficial effect on the human body.
You can make sandwiches with them, prepare salads, as well as soups or soup according to original recipes. If there is a desire to keep the leaves for use after a while, they are frozen, otherwise they quickly grow coarse.
On a note. Cultured arrows in the early spring are used to prepare vitamin salads. In Asia, a rather popular dish is plov with Anzur.
Anzur, above all, is valued because it has healing properties. With the whole spectrum of diseases it can be applied. Onion Suvorov improves brain function, memory, improves immunity and simply tones the consumer.
Planting with Suvorovsky onions may seem unusual to many, and the fruit itself does not attract tasty bulbs, which has a common onion. However, taking into account its healing effect, as well as simple care of the plant, it is possible to plant it in your summer cottage.
Anzur can grow in different ways:
The generative mode of propagation of a culture is not very popular. Sowing seeds will have patience - a large onion will ripen only after 4 years. With their receipt of problems will not arise. An adult plant brings many seeds. They are usually sown before winter - at the end of October, when there is about a week before frosts. The beds are made low - 10-12 cm. The seeds are closed up by 1.5-2 cm. After planting them, they mulch the beds with peat or humus. This procedure is especially important if the soil in the area is heavy. The layer of mulch should be about 2 cm. In the spring of Anzur will give friendly shoots. They will appear early: at the end of March or in early April.
Possible and spring planting onions Suvorov. But it will require a preliminary stratification of seeds, otherwise you can not wait for germination. The seed is placed in wet and cold (temperature 0- + 5 ° C) sand. It will be ready for landing only in 5 months.
Having released cotyledon leaves, by May the seedlings will wither, moving into a dormant period. During it, the plants form tiny bulbs. Their diameter can reach up to 2 cm, but more often it is much smaller and amounts to 3-6 mm. They are dug up and, having dried, left until autumn. Anzur bulbs are planted at a distance of 5 cm from each other. The spacing between rows is made equal to 25 cm. The depth of seeding is 5 cm. In the first year, you can not dig out the bulbs, but leave them to hibernate in the same place. But they are seated next season, otherwise the development of the Anzur will slow down.
The procedure is repeated twice. At the end of the third season, the bulbs will resemble garlic cloves in size. When planting, they are buried by 7 cm. The sprouts that emerged from them in the spring of the fourth year can be eaten. Large onions are prepared for planting already traditional way for onions.
Growing anzur from seeds is a very laborious task. More often for its reproduction use daughter bulbs and slices. You can dig them up when the leaves on the plant dry up almost to the end. Usually, 2-3 cloves form in the nest, but one large bulb may form. They are placed in the ground in the fall, leaving 20 cm between them. The row spacing is increased to 30 cm, and the embedment depth is up to 10-12 cm. If placed smaller, after a winter, anzur bulbs may be on the ground surface.
Late landing is preferred. Experienced gardeners note that the bulbs, placed on the beds in September, form 4-6 cloves. If you delay the procedure until the end of October, they are divided less intensively. With this planting, anzur will give ready-to-eat bulbs at the end of next season.
Suvorovskiy onions to taste loose soil. In heavy clay soils it is often affected by fungal infections and rot. The beds for anzur are best made high. The soil should be well cleaned, choosing from it the roots of weeds, even rotted. If you neglect this, the leaves on the plant will be small and twisted. Planting of the bulbs is carried out carefully. If the root bumps are damaged, a good harvest can be expected.
The areas vacated after the following plants are suitable for growing Suvorov onions:
Anzur is distinguished by a short growing season. It rises early, in May-June, entering the stage of flowering. In early spring, the green leaves of Suvorov's onions in the plot contrasted with the snow that had not yet completely melted. They grow quickly, remaining edible for 2-3 weeks. Then they get rude. Anzur leaves contain many vitamins that the body desperately needs after winter. The onion of Suvorov allows you to get the first useful greens, while the other garden crops are still sleeping. In July, after the seeds ripen, the above-ground part of the plant dries out, and for the underground (onion) a dormant period begins.
Anzur is not afraid of severe winters. His winter hardiness can only envy. Even completely frozen bulbs spring out shoots. For them, only excessive moisture is detrimental. It leads to their decay. Therefore, it is better to plant Suvorov onions in elevated areas where the snow does not linger and the water does not stagnate. Pests and diseases bypass the plant side.
Anzur specific care is not required. Those who grew garlic on the site, his agricultural technology will seem familiar. Suvorov's bow is rather thermophilic. The optimum temperature for its development is within + 15- + 25 ° C. Watering planting is moderate, avoiding even short-term waterlogging.
Anzur responds well to top dressing. Compositions with a high content of potassium are ideal for it. The lack of this element leads to yellowing, and then to the drying of the leaves of the plant. When shoots appear, proceed to the first feeding. During this period, fertilizers are rich in nitrogen. You can spill urea over the bed (at the rate of 1 tsp of substance per 1 m² of soil surface), then pour it with warm water. It is desirable to treat the seedlings with Epin. 1 ampoule diluted in 5 liters of water and sprayed onions with the resulting composition. After this treatment, stressful situations will not be scary for him.
At the seedling stage, the anzur is fed twice. When from the moment of their appearance 12-15 days pass, the Suvorov onion is sprayed with the preparation “Ferovit”, diluting 1 ampoule in 1.5 liters of water. This will help enhance photosynthesis. 2-3 times during the growing season of anzur, beds are enriched with ash and potassium sulphate. When the leaves on the plant dry up, dig out the bulbs. They need to be dried and sorted by size. Large bulbs are eaten, small ones are put in a dry and cool place, where they are kept until planting.
Suvorov's onions are recommended to be replanted every year. It is allowed to do it less often - once in 2-3 years. Then the plant forms a nest consisting of a pair of large, several medium bulbs and numerous children. Flowering and seed ripening takes a lot of energy from Anzur. So that he spends them on growing the bulbs, the shooters appear to break out. You can do this later, when the onion of Suvorov ottsvetet, having admired with plenty of spectacular purple balls swaying in the wind on long (more than 1 m) legs.
The use of Suvorov onion
Although anzur leaves and bulbs are edible, it is most often grown as a decorative perennial crop. Во взрослом виде он представляет собой мощный раскидистый куст, образованный широкими листьями, над которыми гордо возвышается цветоносная стрелка. Венчает ее крупное яркое соцветие, манящее пчел. Onion Suvorov: description, useful properties
The onion of Suvorov is an early maturing variety of the mountain or Central Asian onions, sometimes also called the Anzur. In literary sources, this plant is often referred to as a giant or stalked onions. The bulbs of the plant grows a couple of years after planting the plant in the ground. They have a rounded shape, the diameter of the fetus is about 14 cm.
The plant has rather large (about 35 cm in length) broad leaves. Onion arrows in height can reach 1 m (in some cases reach 1.3 m). Their tops are represented by spherical inflorescences of purple hue, reaching a diameter of 10 cm.
Active flowering culture usually begins in early spring. Shoots are similar to tulips and as the onion grows, its modification takes place: it becomes similar to the impressive size of garlic.
Despite the low prevalence, the culture is considered one of the most useful among young spring greens. So, those who grow onions of Suvorov, note the mass of advantages of this culture:
- Excellent taste. Fruits of onions in their appearance resemble, rather, garlic and in taste they are also close to garlic. That is why this product is simply indispensable as a savory aromatic and flavoring agent for many dishes.
- Saturation with vitamins and healthy trace elements. For example, the onion of Suvorov significantly exceeds the usual bulb on the content of vitamin C (3-4 times). Also in the onion of Suvorov contains a considerable amount of vitamins E and D, so useful for our body. Thanks to them, our body can independently maintain immunity at a sufficient level, the bones last longer remain strong, the blood circulation and blood formation is normalized, etc.
- Early ripeness. That, coupled with high saturation of useful microelements, vitamins, makes this variety of onions an incredibly valuable product, which is one of the first in early spring able to please excellent taste and benefit.
- The variety is incredibly tenacious: the plant is able to survive even in cold weather and is not at all afraid of the effects of various diseases and pests.
Unfortunately, on the territory of Russia (unlike the Caucasus, Transcaucasia and other countries), the onion variety under consideration is not particularly popular. Connoisseurs of onion Suvorov sure that this is due to a misunderstanding of the full value of this product.
Thanks to its spicy taste and delicate aroma, onions of Suvorov are actively used in cooking. In early spring, when the plant shoots arrows, they can be plucked to prepare the first spring salads. They can also be a great addition to meat, soups and other dishes.
Onion heads are actively used for the preparation of pickles and marinades. In some cases, the heads marinate themselves (a particularly popular dish in Uzbekistan is pilau with pickled anzur).
Attention! Despite all the benefits of the fruit of the plant, it is necessary to be very careful in eating it, especially when fresh. This is due, primarily, to the presence of poisonous substances in onion heads, which can be easily poisoned. For this reason, experts recommend using it only after heat treatment.
Onion Suvorov also found its use in traditional medicine. From onions prepare juice, gruel (only boiled product) with the addition of honey. In addition, the onion of Suvorov is a component used in pharmacology for the manufacture of certain drugs.
Onion Suvorov will help prevent the development of diseases of the hearing, urinary system, dermatological problems, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, colds, etc.
It is very easy to grow this variety of onions if you follow simple rules and regularly take care of the crop. So, onion Suvorov is grown by two methods: seed and vegetatively. To simplify the growing process as much as possible, it is better to use the second option.
Propagation is carried out by reproduction of daughter bulbs. It is best to plant in the winter to enjoy the spring early and generous harvest. The planting of the bulbs is carried out to a depth of about 10 cm according to the scheme 20x30 cm.
Further care of the culture is almost identical to the care of garlic. The first green shoots should be expected with the arrival of the first spring days (even the snow can still lie on the soil surface). Watering young sprouts should be moderate, if not to say rare, since the onions of Suvorov, like garlic, are very afraid of overly moist soil.
Do not forget also about feeding onions. Periodically apply potassium fertilizers to the soil (this will help prevent yellowing and drying of the tips of the leaves). A couple of times per season (only after the appearance of the first shoots) you can apply fertilizers with a nitrogen content. When the plant ceases to bloom, and the greens wither, onion heads can be dug out and used.
This concludes consideration of the characteristics of growing onion Suvorov, as well as its characteristics and applications. Good luck!
Description and types of culture
Suvorov bow, or Anzur, is a representative of the family Lilein. This ornamental plant is listed in the Red Book. In its natural environment, culture is found in the alpine, mountainous terrain of Central and Central Asia. Its name was due to the Russian commander Suvorov, who discovered the plant in the Alps. Then the greens and turnips saved the army of many thousands from scurvy.
Suvorov bow is not the only representative of the Anzurov group. Alves, Dzhusay, Uskun, or Oblique onions also belong to this subspecies.
Bow Anzur refers to early-ripening crops. It rises at the same time as snowdrops. At first, the plant looks like a tulip in appearance, but over time it grows and becomes like a large garlic. The height of the stem reaches 100-130 cm. Leaves 35 cm wide are painted in emerald green color.
During the flowering period, a spherical purple bud is formed at the top of the stem. Its diameter reaches 8-12 cm. Large bulbs appear on the 2-3rd year after planting. The diameter of the turnips reaches 12-14 cm.
To embark start in the middle of September. Then the plants have time to settle down to the cold weather and easily tolerate the winter. The selected site is prepared in advance. To do this, remove the weeds, dig up the soil on a bayonet spade and level. It is desirable to make the beds bulk. This will help avoid the accumulation of melt water and precipitation near the turnips.
How is the planting and cultivation of a bed of onion crops?
- Row spacing - 30 cm.
- The distance between the onions - 20 cm.
- The seeding depth is 10–12 cm.
Onions of garlic Suvorov planted neatly in a moistened soil. If the root bumps are damaged, the crop yield will decrease.
Peculiarities of care
Mountain onions - unpretentious plant, cultivation and care for which does not cause trouble. The main difficulty lies in watering. The soil should not dry out, but it should not allow stagnation of moisture, otherwise it will lead to rotting of the bulb. Therefore, Anzur is watered regularly, but moderately. Reducing moisture will help mulch the soil with peat or rotten sawdust. This layer retains moisture, moreover, does not allow weeds to grow, due to which weeding is needed less often.
After moistening or rainfall, the soil is loosened. Due to this event on the ground does not form a crust, blocking the access of air to the roots. During the procedure, carry out weeding. Weeds pick up nutrients from the ground and shade a garden bed. With such "neighbors" should fight regularly.
Anzur responds well to supplements. Fertilize it is recommended several times per season:
- The first dressing is carried out as soon as shoots appear. To do this, use nitrogen preparations or a solution of urea.
- 12–15 days after germination, the culture is fed with potassium sulphate.
- Two weeks after the second feeding, the soil is enriched with ash.
Buds formed during the growing season, take away a lot of strength from the plant. Therefore, if the onion is cultivated to produce heads, then the arrows are removed, but you can leave them when you need plant seeds. In addition, the buds are not cut, if the plant is grown as an ornamental.
If the plant is cultivated for eating onions, turnips are dug out of the soil. Crop harvested after flowering has ended, but the leaves do not wither to the end. This usually occurs in mid-July. The turnips are dried and stored until autumn, after which they are sorted and planted in the ground. At the same time for planting use small onions and children, and large heads are eaten.
To improve the quality and quantity of the crop, Suvorovsky onions are planted annually in a new place. Allowed to change the site every 2-3 years. In Anzur, grown as an ornamental plant, onions are left in the soil.
