Lawn Care Tips After Winter

Lawn owners know that the grass surface needs constant care: watering, mowing, fertilizer. However, these measures do not guarantee that the lawn will remain well-groomed for a long time. The fact is that over time, there is accumulation of debris, straw, compaction of sod and felt, which makes it difficult to deliver water and nutrients to the grass roots. Accumulation of these processes has a negative impact on the appearance of the lawn - it appears areas with yellow and thinned grass (bald spots). Especially it becomes noticeable on a grass covering without due leaving with age of 3 - 5 years.

In order to restore the appearance of the grass cover, as well as for preventive purposes, they perform scarification and aeration of the lawn.

Varieties of scarifiers and aerators

Scarification is cleaning the lawn from debris: residues of mowed and dry grass (straw), moss, weeds, as well as loosening the soil, pulling out felt and cutting the root system for better tillering. Scarification is carried out with special garden tools with scarifying devices or verticutters (from Eng. Vertical cutter).

Scarifiers are divided into:

Aerators provide perforation of the soil to ensure access of oxygen, water and nutrient supplements to the roots of plants. These tools are also mechanical (manual), electric and gasoline.

The main difference in the device of a scarifier from the aerator is that in the first tool knives or cutters are used for cutting and loosening, in the second there are knitting needles or teeth to pierce the soil. Familiar pitchforks can be considered a manual aerator, then a rake is the simplest scarifier.

The best option when one tool combines the functions of the scarifier and aerator. Typically, these models come with two replacement shafts - one with knives (scarifier), the second with knitting needles (aerator).

Manual scarifiers and aerators

The cheapest of the garden family of tools for aeration and cleaning the lawn - manual (mechanical). They are suitable for processing a small area in a couple of hundred. We note their advantages:

  • Low price
  • Do not require fuel or electricity
  • Small size and weight
  • Noiselessness

The main disadvantage of a mechanical scarifier and aerator is the need to expend muscular strength and low productivity.

Electric Scarifiers and Aerators

Electrical units operate on the electrical network and are designed to treat lawns up to 15 acres. Outwardly, such a scarifier is very similar to a lawnmower.

The advantages of electric scarifiers (here is a comparison with a similar gasoline tool):

  • Quiet work
  • Affordable price
  • Efficiency
  • Low weight

Disadvantages of electric scarifiers:

  • Low power
  • Electrical connection
  • Shallow loosening depth

Gasoline Scarifiers and Aerators

Petrol tools are on the top of the price among scarifiers (about four times more expensive than electric), but they provide the greatest range of functionality and maximum performance for lawn care. Petrol scarifiers and aerators have more powerful units than electric ones, respectively, and are able to penetrate deeper into the soil. Such tools are designed to care for large lawns of 15 acres.

Features of the choice of scarifier and aerator

  • When choosing, first you need to decide what type of scarifier is needed. This choice is directly dependent on the area of the lawn and the type of soil on the site. For example, feeding the grass roots in clay soil is in itself difficult, but if the soil is additionally compacted with felt and roots, then a scarifier of much greater power will be needed. If an electric scarifier is purchased, then for a section of 10 hectares an aggregate with an engine power of at least 1100 W is required.
  • Next, you need to select a model by functionality, which may include the presence of an aerator, the operation of the tool in several modes of deepening into the soil. Of course, it is better to purchase an instrument with the highest possible functionality, but the choice may be limited by the budget.
  • An important characteristic when choosing a tool is the width of the work surface - the wider the better, because will take less time when processing one area.
  • The presence of a grass collector will undoubtedly be a convenience. This option will then not manually collect the grass after scarification.

Use of scarifier and aerator

Lawn scarification is carried out in late autumn or early spring. The best option is spring, in early April.

After the lawn is treated with a scarifier, areas with sparse grass may be found. This is due to certain problems in these places that were hidden before processing. For example, excess moisture could accumulate in these areas or these are consequences of the actions of domestic animals — dogs and cats can dig the ground. In this case, such areas must be additionally sown with grass.

Lawn aeration is performed in the second half of May or early September. The need for aeration can be determined after analyzing the root system. If the cut turf, the roots penetrate to a depth of less than 5 centimeters, aeration is necessary. An additional criterion for aeration is the type of grass - the work must be carried out during its growth. Some herbs actively grow in late spring, others in early autumn.

If there are solid objects on the site, for example, stones, then it is necessary to assemble them or use a scarifier with floating knives, otherwise the knives may break or deform.

When using a grass catcher, it can often overflow, especially on a large area. In order not to run around to shake it out after 5 minutes, you can take a garden cart and throw grass into it, moving it along the route as needed. If, however, a part of the grass remains on the lawn, then the lawn mower will help to collect it.

Lawn aeration and scarification

In addition to such important procedures as watering, fertilizing, shearing, it is also necessary to carry out aeration and scarification of the lawn.

Scarification is the combing out of old dry grass with the help of special garden equipment or manually with a rake. Aeration - cutting in the soil furrows to saturate it with oxygen. Aerating and scarifying the lawn is necessary for its recovery. It is necessary:

  • remove dry grass that prevents new shoots from growing,
  • remove moss
  • make holes in the soil up to 5 cm in depth so that the roots of the plants can breathe.

This will provide air and sunlight to the lower layers of the grass cover, as well as allow nutrients and moisture to get to the roots of plants.

Aeration should be carried out monthly during the season or at least twice a year: in early spring and autumn, in October.

How to conduct aeration

If your lawn occupies a small area, then aeration can be done with a normal garden rake. On large areas, it is better to aerate the lawn with the help of special garden equipment - a gasoline or electric aerator. The tool cuts the grooves with knives to a depth of 3-5 cm while simultaneously combing out the old grass and lifting it upwards.

Before aeration, the site must be cleaned of large debris, sticks, bark.

If you have an automatic watering, then mark the nozzles with the help of checkboxes in order not to damage them during aeration.

After processing the area with an aerator, all straw is harvested with a rake or garden vacuum cleaner. It is also very convenient to collect dry grass with a lawn mower.

Rake is better to take the usual metal. They collect old grass well, there is no need to go through the same place several times and redo work. Light fan rakes make a lot of passes.

Next, once again pass an aerator in order to permanently remove the remnants of dead wood and cut more holes in the soil.

We give the lawn the opportunity to recover, and the big bald spots are sown. After aeration, it is desirable to make dressing and small watering. The grass will begin growing season and will quickly grow. Your lawn will have a bright green color and a uniform dense turf.

Green lawn care

Caring for a green lawn on your plot includesI have a systematic haircut, proper dressing and fertilizer, as many believe. However, from time to time sanitary measures such as scarification should be carried out. They contribute to the excellent preservation of freshness and lawn color. In addition to timely cutting and watering the lawn, lawn aeration is used as a care.

Over time, the surface of the earth gradually accumulates a dense layer of straw, moss, roots, debris and dust. It becomes an obstacle to the penetration of moisture, mineral elements or air into the soil. As a result, lawn grass loses its own strength, turns yellow, loses elasticity, etc. Consequently, it is necessary to free the surface of the earth from this layer from time to time, thus ensuring unhindered admission of fresh air, water and nutrients to the roots, that is, lawn care include aeration and scarification.

The need for scarification

Scarification is called grass cleaningwhich must be implemented at least once in 2 years. With the passage of time, the grassy layer grows so closely that the access to its roots of water and sunlight worsens. Dying dead stems form a special cap, which also complicates the ventilation of the roots and reduces the flow of light.

In order to avoid these difficulties, you should constantly loosen the soil, separate solid turf, remove rotted plant residues, garbage, moss. During the procedure, it is also possible to cut the soil to a prescribed depth (usually several centimeters) in order to improve the access of air and humidity to the roots of the weed.

Timely scarification of the lawn ensures:

  • excellent root ventilation,
  • full moisture saturation
  • protection against dangerous pests and putrefactive bacteria,
  • ensuring a well-groomed look,
  • after high-quality processing and planting on the bald spots, new shoots appear.

The need for scarification is determined by the entire length of the roots: if it is less than 5 cm, the area must be treated.

Scarifier is a lawn cleaner. from dried vegetation and moss, it is also intended for loosening the land.

His closest relative is an aerator. Its main role is the ventilation of the soil, and the difference from the scarifier is that it is equipped not with blades, but with needles, with the support of which it pierces the soil. Its performance is usually lower, and it can be used in soft soils. For impermeable soils, it is better to buy a lawn device, preferably with an integrated aerator.

Lawn Care Tips

For the first time, the work on scarification must be done in the autumn time on the 2nd year after planting or in the spring on the 3rd. Processing with a deep invasion is done in the autumn. Scarification can be performed less frequently in sandy soils; alumina must be processed more frequently.

Before starting work on the treatment, mow the grass, leaving 3 centimeters. Then the area is abundantly watered and raked across it.

It is optimal to make lawn scarification in 3 steps:

  • in March-April,
  • in the end of May,
  • at the beginning of autumn.

It is undesirable to operate the unit on dried ground, otherwise there is a high threat to spoil the fertile layer.

Scarifying treatment

First needed remove pebbles and other hard objects that knives can break off from the grass. Square pass scarifier twice, along and across. The dead grass is combed out, vertical cuts are made in dense turf. Correctly place them in a checkerboard pattern. To simplify the cleaning of the grass collector (if there is one) you need to take a garden cart with you.

At the end of the scarification work, the treated base is fertilized by adding a little lime. When processing in spring weed can be sown. You need to mix a mixture of the same composition that was previously, otherwise the coating will be heterogeneous. Pay special attention: the turf just taken from the soil cannot be used as compost, because it contains dangerous pests, fungal spores.

Another important and necessary preventive measure - aeration: pusher turf forks or a special device, aerator. Air exchange improves the ventilation of the earth.

Sanding the lawn

On heavy, overmoistened and heavily used soils, one more process is used - sanding: in the cuts after scarification, sand is poured. Medium-grained sand is suitable for processing, it is equally scattered throughout the area. The sand fills the voids in the ground and accumulates excess water.

Sanding is used toso that:

  • to flatten the plane of the lawn,
  • improve the conditions of ventilation and water supply of the root system,
  • improve the structure of the earth.
  • Sanding is not necessary on simple, dried soils.

Features of the choice of the unit

Factory modifications of scarifiers are:

Handheld device - This is an improved lawn rake with wheels, equipped with wire teeth. Some modifications of the wheels are turning mechanical. These devices are the most affordable, within 5 thousand rubles.

Electrical appliance - also wheels with spikes, the system is driven by an electric motor. The price starts from 10 thousand. Electrical devices quickly overheat: after about any quarter of an hour you need to stop at 10 minutes to cool the unit. Simple modifications leave weed in the area, after processing it must be collected with a rake. The most expensive ones are equipped with grass collectors like a lawn mower. The collection box, in addition, allows you to remove fallen leaves.

An electric unit can perform two functions at once: scarification and aeration. This kind of apparatus has 2 plug-in shaft, with knitting needles and cutters. Any combined electric model is more expensive, but costs more economically than 2 devices separately. A serious disadvantage of any electric model is its dependence on constant electricity. In the implementation there are battery modifications. They cost more, the time of continuous operation depends on the capacity of the working battery.

Petrol unit stronger and more expensive, you need from 20 to 100 thousand and more. It is autonomous, efficiency is great. An integrated aerator is usually already there. In addition, the high cost is another significant drawback: the most hum at work.

The quality of the work, the deepening of the knives depends on the complexity of the apparatus (respectively, on the price): the deepening of inexpensive modifications is 4 millimeters, and of expensive ones, 7 cm or more.

Instrument specifications

Pay special attention to the following properties:

  • performance and service life - period of work without stopping for cooling,
  • the width of the working attachment - the bigger it is, the fewer approaches you need to process your site,
  • The body material of the unit must be strong, however, light so as not to exert excessive pressure on the ground. House modifications are made from aluminum or plastic, in powerful units, high-class ones from steel,
  • the presence and size of the grass catcher. Sometimes it is easier to collect weed after raking, than to constantly suspend work to clean the tank,
  • cutters must be steel and securely fixed,
  • the presence of a controlled grip.

If regular care of your lawn is enough for a model with a few mm penetration into the ground. In the running options, a full penetration gasoline apparatus (up to 10 cm) with high power is required.

The need for expensive technology

If the area is small, there is no need to purchase expensive equipment. The simplest device for the care of their territory - absolutely all known rakes for combing green lawn. Option for aeration - nozzle with spikes for shoes, cost about 500 rubles.

Making the decision to purchase expensive equipment, Consider the following factors:

  1. Square. Within the area of 20 meters, a handheld unit will suffice, an electric device will fit up to 15 acres, more than 50 m need a powerful petrol,
  2. Systematic service. If you do not even have time to make timely cutting, you may need to contact a special company instead of purchasing your own equipment.
  3. In the garden society you can buy equipment in stock. It is recommended to reach an agreement in advance who will save the scarifier and pay for maintenance, etc.
  4. You can take equipment rental, from 1000 rubles per day.

Making a scarifier with your own hands

Of course, it is only possible to build a scarifier with an electric or gasoline engine. to people who understand something in the field of technology. Простым садоводам, кому приобретение прибора не по карману, а с целью производства своего нет ни времени, ни мастерства, ни желания, лучше пользоваться проверенными и доступными методами для скарификации и аэрации газона.

We are talking about elementary nozzles for shoes, with the help of which it will be possible to loosen the soil a little, the more open to the root system access to nutrients, moisture and oxygen.

Nozzles have specialized pointed endings, similar to nozzles for a rake, are put on in boots and are used for scarification by a person who just needs to walk around the section. Of course, a similar result, as from the use of a stationary machine, is not easy to achieve, however, there is nothing impossible for gardeners who actually decided to transform a lawn!

A simple and effective aerator can be made for the lawn with your own hands.

  1. Cut 0.6 meters from a pipe with a diameter of 10 cm - blank for a garden roller. To increase the weight, it is allowed to fill small gravel or sand into its cavity.
  2. Fix 6-7 mm nails in a row along the perimeter. Nails will cut the turf.
  3. Cover the ends with plugs with special holes for the handle.
  4. Connect made pen.

After the site has been completely treated with a homemade device, it is necessary to remove it, comb the dry grass and collect the turf with a rake.

Neat groomed lawn grass looks decent and stylish. And a dense green lawn is an indication that the house has an owner! Proper lawn care is cutting, watering, feeding, getting rid of weeds, seeding grass in the bald spots formed over time, aeration and scarification of the lawn.

Do you need a lawn care equipment, or do you prefer to do with a hand-held device - you decide. Of course, the lawn needs grooming, and a lawn aerator / scarifier greatly simplifies this problem and speeds up its resolution.

What is an aerator

From the name it is clear that this is a kind of tool for saturation with air. Of course, the soil, if we are talking about lawns. His task is to pierce compacted turf, loosen it a little while allowing air to penetrate to the roots. Two types of aerators are known by the piercing method:

  1. A thin tube at a predetermined depth vertically with core extraction. This is the highest quality way. The soil around the hole is not compacted, the effect is longer. The disadvantage is that these machines are very expensive, and the manual ones of similar design are practically not produced now.
  2. A sharp thin pin. The disadvantage is that the ground around the hole is compacted. It is possible to reduce the effect by increasing the amount while decreasing the diameter of the pins. In addition, the movement of the rod up and down at different angles virtually eliminates compaction, loosening the soil around the holes.

Mechanical aerators

Lawn aeration with mechanical aerators is a very laborious business, so they are used only on small areas. The simplest tools for this are ordinary forks for piercing sod to a depth of 15 cm, or a rake with thin, sickle-shaped steel teeth. They can pierce the soil to a very shallow depth, or make an incision, removing the layer of packed grass and moss. A more advanced version is a drum aerator. When it is rolled on the lawn, sharp pins located evenly on the surface of the cylindrical drum leave punctures in the turf.

The foot mechanical aerator for a tubular type lawn deserves special attention. It is a frame to which 3-4 tubes are welded with an inner diameter of 10-15 mm. When you press it with your foot, the tubes press in, filling up with turf. The next time you press it in another place, the next portion of turf is pressed in, and the core from the previous puncture is ejected through the upper hole to the outside. However, due to the high labor intensity, foot aerators are not very common.

Sandals for aeration of a lawn with sharp pins on a sole are much more popular. They dress over shoes or boots, and the desired effect is achieved by "walking" in such a "shoe" on the lawn, trying to make punctures evenly throughout its area.

Electric and gasoline aerators

Some of these models are sometimes purchased for lawn care in private country estates. Structurally, they repeat the principle of drum mechanical, but have incomparably higher performance. There are aerators with power from the power grid - their advantages are obvious: environmental friendliness, low noise level and quite high power. The disadvantage is also known - the range is limited by the length of the cable to the power source. Battery models are more autonomous, but require a constant charge of batteries.

The most powerful of these machines - gasoline. Their disadvantages are also known - problems with fuel and a lot of noise. Specialized aerators of this type have significant performance, so they are more often used in agriculture or in the service of vast territories. On country lawns, such units, which look like a tractor, are used extremely rarely. For smaller areas, more versatile machines are used, combining several functions.

Verticutters and Scarifiers

What it is? In a simple way - it is a rake on wheels. The word comes from the English vertical cutter - vertical cutter. Slightly curved, thin steel teeth, as they move, slam into the soil, pulling out dried plants, dead roots, mowed grass and other debris from the turf. Electric, battery or gasoline lawn verticutter is the same rake on a rotating drum. It depends on the height of its rise, whether it will work with an aerator or verticutter. Therefore, these machines are more commonly called a verticutter-aerator. The plunging height of them, as a rule, is adjustable from 0 to 14 cm.

The scarifier works a little differently. For a lawn, this is an analogue of a comb combing out old leaves, grass clippings and other debris packed on the soil. Its manual counterpart is a fan rake. Electric or gasoline scarifiers are equipped with a barbed wire drum on its surface. But for lawn care, it is desirable to have a universal tool. For example, a combination device with interchangeable drums, capable of performing any function.

What is the difference between a vertikutter and a scarifier

Electric or gasoline cars can be self-propelled or non-self-propelled. Of course, the quality of work of models with wheel drive and the ability to adjust the speed of movement is much better due to the uniformity of processing, however, the cost of the product itself is somewhat higher.

Aeration: when and why?

The need for aeration in a particular area is determined by the status of rhizomes. For this, a vertical cut of turf is made with a shovel, and if the depth of their germination does not exceed 4–5 cm, then aeration is absolutely necessary. Compacted soil, covered with a layer of compressed grass, leaves, and moss, prevents the penetration of water, nutrients and air to the roots, which inhibits the development of plants. As a result, bald patches and spots of yellowing grass appear as signs that lawn care is clearly inadequate. Aeration in this case is the easiest method to correct the situation.

Aeration Rules

It is possible to conduct aeration on small areas using sandals for aerating the lawn, forks or verticutter petrol or electrically driven on more extensive areas. A couple of days before the start of work, the plot needs to be watered so that the soil will soften. It is possible, if lucky, to make the lawn aerate the next day after the rain, but not such that it turns the earth into sodden dirt.

Aeration of the lawn is done in rows with an overlap of 3-4 cm. If the turf is too dense, then another pass at 90 ° to the previous one may be needed. When in 2–3 days the lumps of land turned out of lawns during operation dry up, they should be crushed with a rake, then watered, if necessary, fertilizer should be applied. If there were bald patches on the lawn, then, before working with a rake, sow the seeds of the necessary grass, smooth everything out and water it abundantly.

Proper aeration transforms the appearance of the lawn. After a week, it becomes bright green, the growth rate increases, in addition, its resistance to diseases increases.

In no case should aeration be carried out in hot weather, as this may cause irreparable harm to the grass carpet.

When using a whip aerator, the frequency of treatment can be 2–3 weeks, vertikutter, usually once a year. But when to carry out the treatment depends on the type of grass. For cold-resistant, for example, fescue and bluegrass, the best time is autumn, if it is heat-loving crops, then in the spring. In cases where the lawn is actively used and heavily trampled down, you may have to repeat the work 2, or even 3 times per season. It is also useful in dry summer - it will improve the access of moisture to the roots, and in the rainy time it will allow its excess to evaporate, preventing them from rotting.

Verification and scarification: when to do and how often

When verticalized, fast-rotating thin cutters deeply cut the soil, tearing out old roots, moss, and flattened plant debris from the surface. As a rule, it is carried out twice a year: the main one in the spring (with aeration) and the surface in the autumn. In practice, the depth is chosen based on the age of the lawn, as well as varieties of vegetation. The operation stimulates the branching of the root system and the growth of grass cover. With a very large depth of processing it is better to use a gasoline verticulator, as more powerful. Do not forget that after the vertical state of the soil is ideal for planting, so it is desirable, if necessary, to stock up on the appropriate seeds. At the end of the work the lawn must be poured abundantly.

Scarification is a more benign procedure than verticulation, so it can be done more often, say, 3-4 times a year. For example, in the spring, after the snow melts, then, in early June, when the active growth of grass cover begins, as well as in the fall, in the first half of September. But do not comb the top layer of dead grass completely. It should remain up to 0.5–1 cm. With such a thickness, it will not impede the flow of air, but at the same time will not allow moisture to evaporate too quickly. For scarification, it is desirable to change the direction each time, say, by 90 °. After the procedure, you can slightly fertilize the lawn, add a little lime, and if necessary, sow fresh seeds in the bald areas. In the presence of rod or tubular aerators, it is desirable immediately after scarification to produce also aeration, then the lawn should be watered abundantly.

About choosing a verticutter

This is the most popular type of machine, and although, because of its versatility, all the operations they do are not perfect, nevertheless, it is enough to get pretty decent results. So, what should you look for when choosing this device?

  1. The body should not be heavy, but durable, so that less damage to the lawn. Good plastic or aluminum is fine. Professional samples have a steel case.
  2. Electric or gasoline? With a deep incision of the knives in the turf there is a risk of stopping the motor, which is very dangerous for electric models, but does not affect the performance of gasoline at all.
  3. Do you need a garbage collector, which is quickly filled and it is required to empty it very often, which greatly slows down the work. If you choose a verticutter without a bin, you will have to collect garbage with a rake. Sometimes this option is more acceptable.
  4. Cutters or working cutters should be made of durable tool steel and fastened with dampers that prevent the shaft from flying out or jamming.
  5. The depth of the cutter should be adjusted using an external control knob in the range from 1–2 to 12–14 cm.
  6. In accordance with the desired performance should select the width. Different household vertikuterov it usually ranges from 20 to 60 cm.
  7. The handle of the machine must be adjustable, adjustable to the height of the operator.

Technique of lawn aeration with special tools

The principle of operation of the aerator is to change the structure of the earth. Devices equipped with spikes or spokes, pierce grass cover, provide oxygen to the roots without compromising their integrity. Aerators, in the construction of which there are knives, cut the surface of the lawn and provide air, water and fertilizer penetration to the root system of plants.

The disadvantages of aerators, see the table.

Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of different types of devices, you can easily choose a model that is suitable for your garden plot. Lawn care aerator does not require special skills, which allows anyone to work. This explains the high popularity of aeration among amateur gardeners.

Lawn aerator: types, selection criteria, homemade aerator

The diagram shows the condition of the soil and grass before and after aeration of the lawn.

Aeration should be performed at least once per season, if the load on the lawn is not very large, and the soil is sandy, light. With a greater load or under adverse weather conditions, the operation should be carried out more often. Dense soil with a high clay content will require two treatments per season.

You will need a lawn aerator for fertilizer application and restoration of the coating.

Types of aerators

The simplest aerator that can improve the condition of your lawn are ordinary forks, with the help of which they simply pierce the ground. But you can handle small pieces of lawn with a pitchfork, and it is difficult to work with hand tools on a large area.

The industry offers several types of a lawn aerator.

These devices can be equipped with a gasoline or electric engine. In addition, self-propelled aerators can be distinguished, which the operator controls while sitting on the unit itself.

After cleaning the earthen pellets taken out by the hollow needles of the mechanism to the surface, the lawn appears to us like a leaky green tablecloth.

Another type is a lawn scarifier aerator. In addition to piercing the soil, this machine also collects soil pellets and dry grass in a special container.

Manual aerators

In addition to self-propelled lawn aerators, there are also smaller hand mechanisms. One of the samples can be seen in the next photo.

Another type of lawn aerator is a slightly improved tubular forks.

Interesting in the operation of aerators, made in the form of sandals. They are simply worn on the feet over the shoe and fixed with straps. Walking in such shoes on the lawn, you can, at the same time, bring her help.

Such a lawn aerator is easy to do with your own hands. It is enough to take plywood, nails, straps and screws. Adhere to the phased manufacturing process:

  • Cut out four pieces of plywood under the sole of your shoes, a pair for each sandal.
  • We drill holes in one of the plywoods so that the nails hold firmly in them. Nails take a length of 100 millimeters.
  • Insert the nails into the prepared holes.
  • We cover the plywood from the side of the nails with the second plywood sole.
  • Tightly tighten both plywood screws.
  • Fastened to the product straps.
  • Do the same for the second sandal.

It remains to wear a homemade lawn aerator and meter by meter around the entire area. The use of homemade small tools is important on small lawns and narrow areas.

Lawn aerator - how not to make a mistake when choosing

You don’t look like a large area for a long time, so it’s better to use another model of a lawn aerator.

A homemade aerator can be made larger.

Lawn aerator: how to choose how to do it yourself

Lawn care is not easy. Mowing, watering, feeding - and this is not all that needs to be done for the beauty and attractiveness of the green lawn. Special attention should be paid to such a procedure as lawn aeration. Not everyone knows about its existence, but, nevertheless, it is very important to maintain the health of the lawn.

The name of the procedure speaks for itself. Aeration is the saturation of the earth with oxygen and useful substances, which eventually get worse to the roots and provoke lawn diseases. With aeration, the entire surface of the lawn is punctured with a pitchfork or special tool, thereby ensuring the flow of oxygen to the roots. Aeration of the lawn is carried out both in summer and in spring and autumn.

What problems can timely aeration cope with:

    • Various diseases
    • Root pest activity
    • Appearance of bald spots,
    • Lack of vitamins,
    • Not enough moisture
    • Grass growth problems.

By performing annual aeration, you can prevent all these problems and get a healthy and bright grass cover. Sometimes aeration is combined with the procedure for cleaning the lawn from grass felt and moss after the winter or at the end of the grass growth season. But sometimes a separate lawn aeration procedure is required, which you can do yourself. Using special tools, you can carry out aeration and get rid of many problems!

    When to aerate the lawn?

Now it became clear what aeration is and the attentive reader may ask: “When to do aeration of a lawn?”.

First, aeration should be performed if you notice any of the problems listed above. Therefore you should pay attention to the condition of your lawn. Usually, diseases and other unpleasant consequences occur in late spring or early summer, when the grass is already sufficiently grown. You may notice a decrease in the growth of grass or even thinned areas on the surface, yellow, lifeless grass or the presence of any disease. In this case, aeration should also be carried out as one of the lawn restoration measures. Using the tools and devices for self-aeration of the lawn, you will help the soil to actively absorb moisture and beneficial minerals.

Another important criterion is the time of year. Lawn owners who are professionally involved in their care and who know all the details, recommend aeration at least 2 times a year - in spring and autumn. Lawn aeration in the summer can be carried out during rainy summer or if the soil under your lawn is clay and dense. In the spring, you provide accelerated water access to the roots and the rapid growth of new grass. In the fall, you normalize air circulation, which prevents the lawn from freezing.

Lawn care with a scarifier and aerator

In no case is it recommended to conduct aeration in the hot and arid summer. Even if you need to remove grass felts or plant a lawn, you do not need to combine this with aeration. Active sun with a small amount of precipitation can greatly harm the roots and even completely dry them. From the small holes, all the moisture that the earth is trying to retain with all its strength will evaporate.

When to do summer lawn aeration:

    • With heavy rains and wet weather,
    • If you have clay soil,
    • If, after frequent watering, the ground is covered with a thick crust,
    • The lawn is experiencing heavy loads (sports lawn, the lawns on which often go).

Lawn aeration can be done with special tools, for example, you can use lawn aeration sandals that are easy to make yourself.

Aeration lawn with his own hands

Aeration of the lawn with your own hands should be carried out to a depth of at least 8-10 cm, since the surface perforation of the soil can lead to the growth of roots in breadth, and not deep into the winter, the lawn can freeze out completely. In addition, shallow punctures can lead to bogging of small roots and their subsequent decay.

You can carry out the procedure on your own - you only need to prepare the necessary equipment. And you can use a special tool for aeration of the lawn. The simplest and most affordable way is to pierce the entire area of the lawn with forks, which can be found in the arsenal of each summer resident. However, this method is suitable only for those who have a small lawn.

For large areas, it is worth stocking up with special equipment or making it yourself. The most popular are sandals for lawn aeration. They are a pad with spikes on the sole and a simple mount that fixes the aerator on the leg. But you can make such a tool yourself. To do this you will need:

    • A small flat plate, the width and length approximate to the size of your foot,
    • Self-tapping screws
    • Velcro fixing tapes, hose clips or plain rope.

It is necessary to screw the screws into the plate at a distance of 3-5 cm from each other in a checkerboard pattern. The plate should be fixed on the leg with clamps or clamps, if nothing was at hand - with a rope. Homemade sandals for aerating your lawn are ready! In contrast to the plastic factory, they will not fail for a long time and in the event of a breakdown, you can repair them yourself!

    Lawn aeration tool

In addition to aerating the lawn yourself with your own hands, you can use special factory tools. They are divided into:

The principle of the first is based on the direct participation of the person in the process. For example, a handheld aerator combined with a rake is a small, sickle blade protected by a casing. To perform the procedure is required to rake the entire area of the lawn.

Automatic aeration tools for a large lawn area are fully automated and need only control and direction. Such cars have an engine and operate from the network or using gasoline.
