Many people who like to grow these vegetables in their summer garden are attracted by planting carrots in open ground with a ribbon. Such an agrotechnical device — planting with a special ribbon — frees from the tedious and time-consuming procedures of pulling carrots. When planting ribbon carrot grows large enough, flat. True, two factors cause certain difficulties: the high cost of such purchased seeds and often poor germination.

What is taping

The ribbon planting material of carrots is a paper strip (narrow and long) with seeds glued on it with a special composition, which are located at a standard distance necessary for the optimal development of each root crop. These strips are laid on the beds in the grooves and sprinkled with soil. Special paper and special glue from soil moisture soften, and vegetable seedlings develop freely.

Of course, this method is hardly suitable if a very large area of carrot plantings is planned: it is expensive for money if you buy ready-made “stickers”, and it is time-consuming if you glue it yourself. It is advantageous to someone in such a way to occupy a small part of the space - for example, under ultra-early varieties. And comfortable in small gardens.

amount

On packs of pasted vegetable seeds, manufacturers always indicate the length of the packed tape. Knowing the size of your beds, it is easy to calculate the required number of packages. The width of the aisle for carrots is usually taken 20-25 cm. For example, one running meter of the bed (with its meter width and transverse arrangement of the rows) will take about 4-5 meters of paper strip.

Selection of soil for planting

When we choose this method, we expect a special, high-quality harvest. All costs and expectations can be negated by poor preparation of garden soil. Here, as never before, a deep loose and nutritious layer, taking into account crop rotation, as well as a sunny location, are important. Do not forget that this vegetable crop does not tolerate the introduction of fresh manure.

Sowing time

When planting carrots tape should not pull with the timing. Early crops fully utilize spring soil moisture and moderately cool weather, successfully “run away” from a carrot fly. In addition, time is created if bad germination occurs. Sometimes a carrot "shoots" after a week, but even three weeks (up to a month) are not considered criminal. For quality vegetable seeds, the period may be delayed due to excessive burial or prolonged cold weather. Sometimes firms are informed that tape seeds are pretreated with stimulants (to improve germination rates) and fungicides (from diseases). (Some report a rather successful experience of planting carrot seeds on a tape before winter).

Landing pattern

The landing parameters are very simple. On the leveled surface of the bed we make grooves at a distance of 20-25 cm. For varieties with powerful tops, sometimes 30 cm is recommended, for early ripening, it can be reduced to 15. The depth of the furrow is about 3 cm. If the soil substrate is not wet enough, the furrows are shed with water.

Laying ribbons with carrots

Paper strips are better laid "on the edge" (sideways) - it is believed that the shop seeds germinate so successfully. Homemade soft toilet paper can be placed horizontally (in this case, a depth of 2 cm is sufficient).

Trenches fall asleep with damp earth, lightly clap (or roll). You can gently pour over the top of the tank with a fine spray. It is important to ensure good planting contact with the soil.

It is very desirable to cover the top with a small layer of fine mulch or covering material. So moisture and heat are better kept.

How often should we water the buried ribbons before germination? Everything is very individual. The main rule - the land should be constantly moderately wet. The occurrence of soil crust can not be allowed.

Evaluation of germination

Many growers make landing strips with their own hands. In this case, you must first check the percentage of germination of seeds. We lay several seeds in a moistened cotton rag, wrap lightly with polyethylene and keep in a warm (from +20 to +30 degrees) place, avoiding drying. Sizing is estimated no later than the tenth day. For sticking, only seed material with good germination rates is used (preferably at least 80%, maybe 100% - especially if grown independently). Glue dry seeds. Do it in the late winter or early spring.

How to make a paste

Soft toilet paper cut into strips the width of a couple of centimeters. Cooking paste:

  • From flour: gradually pour a couple of tablespoons of flour into a glass of boiling water, boil gently until thickened and cool.
  • From starch: in a glass of boiling water, slowly pour a tablespoon of starch dissolved in 50 ml of water, immediately remove from heat, cool.

You can pre-apply a drop of paste on the paper with a match (at a distance of 3-5 cm, given the germination and variety) and with a wetted match or a needle, drop the seeds into the drops, picking them up one by one. And it is more convenient for someone to immediately dip the tip of a match in a paste and then grab a seed, then pushing them together on paper.

The finished strips are dried for a day, then rolled up and stored in a dry place until the beginning of the season.

The personal preparation of planting carrot belts saves seed and money, and guarantees predictable germination.

Seed Planting Requirement

However, in order to obtain sufficiently large and even fruits of carrots, we first advise you to familiarize yourself with the basic requirement, which must necessarily be met when it is planted in open ground. This rule assumes that when planting seeds it is necessary to thin out them (this procedure is the main condition for obtaining a good harvest).

Keeping a given distance between the seeds allows you to get fruits of an accurate shape and rather large size, but with manual planting it is not always possible to do this.

Important! The fact is that when watering seeds, they change their original position or float upwards, as a result of which the entire carefully prepared planting system is completely destroyed. A similar effect is observed after strong torrential rains.

The only correct way out of this situation is to find a way to artificially maintain the desired removal of one seed from another. This approach to planting boils down to the use of special techniques to reliably plant seeds in the soil of the garden plot.

As a basis for such fixation, commonly used in the household adhesive tape or any other material on which they can be easily pasted by hand. But before trying to place the carrot seeds on the tape and how to plant them in the ground, be sure to familiarize yourself with the contents of the following chapters.

Ways of sticking (preparation) of seeds

In order to have a clear idea of how to plant carrots on a tape in open ground, you should first familiarize yourself with the techniques that allow you to fix the distance between the seeds when placed on flexible carriers. The whole secret of this approach to the cultivation of carrots is that in this case they are not afraid of either the rains or the strong pressure of water capable of mixing them.

The five of the five most common ways of planting carrot seeds include the following options for their tape placement:

  • Purchase ready-to-use seed bands,
  • Independent placement on a special adhesive tape,
  • Using toilet paper for this purpose, which can be easily glued to the seeds,
  • Planting seeds on ordinary paper napkins,
  • Landing options on various bases with homemade starch or flour paste.

Each of these approaches has its own characteristics and drawbacks, which should be considered separately.

Purchase finished tape

Pre-sticking carrot seeds on sticky tape is considered one of the most reliable ways of spatially fixing them.

Additional Information. To help the amateur gardener, the industry mastered the mass production of finished ribbons made in the form of thin and long strips with a special seed component set on the glue.

Seeds are distributed throughout the length at a fixed distance from one another, which ensures optimal germination of each root. All carrot lovers need to do in this situation is to go and buy ready-to-eat stuff. In the course of the planting, such strips are laid in the previously loosened grooves, and then lightly sprinkled with soil.

Ribbons for planting carrots

As the seed germinates, the paper with glue applied to it under the action of soil moisture disintegrates, and the remaining free sprouts of the future fetus continue to develop. The advantages of this method of preparation for disembarkation include the fact that the carrot seeds purchased from the store do not need to be pretreated and prepared.

Among the disadvantages of this approach include, above all, the high cost of tape blanks. And, indeed, if it is planned to plant large areas of seed materials, large amounts will be required to purchase them.

Moreover, the quality of such a planting stock only gets worse every year. That is why most gardeners, having learned this lesson well, prefer to stick seeds on ribbons with their own hands.

Self sticking

All those who have a keen eye and a reliable hand at their disposal can easily make such a foundation for seeds on their own. This option is also suitable in those cases when it is necessary to plant varieties of a special (elite) carrot.

Planting with toilet paper

As a tape, you can use any soft fabric suitable for these purposes or a similar basis with a natural adhesive composition (paste, for example) applied on it. But most gardeners liked the familiar toilet material. Anyone who would like to know how to stick carrot seeds on toilet paper for planting, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the following instructions:

  • Before planting carrots on toilet paper, first of all, you need to check the percentage of germination of the prepared material,
  • To do this, you first need to take a few seeds and place them in a cotton cloth well moistened with water, after which it is wrapped in polyethylene and then kept in a warm place without drying,
  • After ten days, you should open the polyethylene and assess the degree of sodding, and then select only high-quality seed with maximum germination rates (better - up to 100%).

Important! For sticking to the paper, only dry seeds are taken, which must be selected even in winter or as soon as spring came.

All further actions for the preparation of seeds should be developed in compliance with the following rules:

  • First, toilet paper is cut into strips approximately 2-3 cm wide, after which it will be possible to begin to prepare paste or jelly (to choose which is more convenient for someone).

Additional Information. Homemade paste for carrots can be prepared on the basis of flour or starch according to the recipe, known to any hostess.

To do this, it is necessary to slowly pour 2 tablespoons of flour into a boiling water into a glass with stirring. After the composition thickens, it should be left to cool completely.

  • Secondly, with the help of a match small droplets of paste are applied on the paper with a step of about 3-5 cm, and then the seeds are alternately folded into them by means of a moistened needle.

After finishing glue the seeds on the paste, you can proceed to the procedure of drying the finished ribbons, which are left for about a day. Upon completion of drying, they are neatly rolled into tubes and stored in a dry and cool place until the beginning of the planting season.

Landing of ribbons

Before you sow the prepared material in the garden soil, you must fulfill the following requirements:

  • It is recommended to dig up the land on the plot designated for planting in the late autumn in order to give it some rest. And with the arrival of spring about a month before planting carrots, you should thoroughly walk the rake over the previously dug soil,
  • Immediately before planting, the ground for carrots should be carefully sped up,
  • A day before starting the direct sowing of seeds in the soil, you should again take up the rake in order to loosen the soil a little,
  • After that, in the zone where you plan to plant carrots, it will be necessary to make deep grooves about 4 cm wide, which are then necessarily spilled with warm water,

Note! The distance between adjacent rows of belt landings should remain at least 10 cm.

Next, you will need to carefully spread out the pre-rolled paper strips along the grooves, placing them at about the same depth.

  • Before sowing carrots by placing the tape in the ground, it is important to ensure that the plane with the seeds is facing the ground.

The observance of these, in general, simple rules allows at the end of the season to get a good harvest of your favorite culture. Also, do not forget about the need to provide adequate care for the planted seeds. Usually it is manifested in the fact that after the seedlings are lightly powdered with earth, they must be covered with an opaque polyethylene, which retains heat well.

It is necessary to press its edges as closely as possible to the ground with bricks or heavy stones, which eliminates the possibility of the coating breaking by a strong wind. After a couple of weeks, the film can be removed completely, thereby ensuring full access to sunlight. If the planting area is located on the northern side of the site, the film is allowed to be removed no earlier than 18 days after sowing.

In conclusion, we note that planting carrot seeds with tape in open ground is a rather laborious and responsible business. That is why the preparatory stage described in the first half of the review is of particular importance.

How should plant carrots on tape

Today, you can find ready-made ribbons with seeds attached to them at regular intervals. But not always gardeners manage to find them, and the variety of carrots may not be suitable for this climate and soil.

After all, this culture belongs to the heat-loving, and she loves a special soil - non-acidic and not very fertilized. Especially does not make carrots manure. Planting on the tape - the easiest and most convenient way for the gardener, as there is no need for thinning of seedlings and weeding.

Under the layer of paper, grass grows poorly.

  • All that a gardener needs to do is to prepare shallow grooves, put a ribbon with seeds there and water,
  • Sprinkle with a layer of soil and moisten it again,
  • Instead of tape, you can use the most ordinary toilet paper, but only thin,
  • Put toilet paper into the digged groove, sprinkle seeds over it and evenly distribute them,
  • Place another layer of paper on top and shed the grooves well. Once again, moisten the soil.

It is possible to plant this culture on a tape with the help of paste. That is, it is understood that the toilet paper or any thin paper must be pre-lubricated with this composition, and only then a thin strip of seeds should be spilled.

Further actions are the same as in the previous case.

In order not to worry and not think why the carrots sown on the ribbon do not sprout, you must use one little trick: cover the wet ground with a moistened cloth that will keep the water in the ground as long as possible. Carrots will feel great and comfortable, only watering the seed planting sites more often.

Planting and care for juicy carrots on the tape

If you chose early varieties of carrots for planting, you can deepen them into the ground at the end of April and in July enjoy the juicy and healthy root vegetable. Late varieties are able to survive the winter well provided proper planting. It must be remembered that the carrot is a heat-loving culture, which means that the beds with it should be located in a sufficiently lit place.

It is better if the predecessors of this root are tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, potatoes, garlic or cabbage, after which it sprouts perfectly. Many gardeners are interested in the question: Why do the sprouts appear for a long time and after how many days in total does the carrot sprout on the tape?

It depends on the type and temperature of the air. On average, it takes from a week to three. For a week, the carrot will rise only on condition that the air temperature warms up to + 22–24 С. How long does it take to plant carrots planted on a ribbon if there is only +8 ⁰C outside?

It may take 25, or even all 30 days. Only high-quality seeds should be placed in the ground, having previously discarded illiquid. You should not make too shallow grooves, but they should not be too deep either, otherwise shoots may not be seen at all.

If the seeds were kept up a certain distance between them on the tape, there is no need for the first thinning. In the future, you need to ensure that the gap between adjacent root crops was 3 cm.

After how many days to repeat watering? This should be done regularly at all stages of plant development, wetting the soil layer to a depth of 30 cm.

During the season, culture should be fed twice: the first time 3-4 weeks after the first shoots, and the second - a couple of months. Well, another important point - the roots must be protected from carrot flies. But carrots are prone to diseases.

That's all the recommendations. Clearly following them, you can get a good harvest of sweet, large carrots to the envy of the neighbors and to the joy of the kids. Good luck!

Briefly about the method

Planting material is a narrow and long strip of paper with seeds attached to it (using a special composition). The distance between the seeds is standard, necessary for optimal development of each plant. Strips unfold in the grooves in the beds and sprinkle with soil. Special tissue paper and special glue softens from the soil moisture, and the plant sprouts freely.

  1. The seeds on the tape are the most convenient and easiest way for the summer resident, since the seeds are immediately located at the right distance from each other, there is no need for thinning of the seedlings.
  2. If there are heavy rains after planting, the seeds on the tape will not “float” and will not show up in unexpected places of the bed.
  3. Convenient in case of early ripening varieties in a small area.

  1. Sometimes there is a difficulty in packing the tapes: after pouring the earth and watering, they crawl to the surface, they have to be buried again.
  2. Gardeners note that the seed on the tape from the store is unusually small, for a small bed you have to buy two packages. However, with the traditional planting method, a large percentage of the seeds already planted are lost.
  3. Independent creation of such tapes is quite time consuming, although it saves it when it is planted.
  4. Dry seeds that are not soaked in water or fertilizers are glued to the tape, so shoots appear later.

When and what varieties to plant?

The timing of planting seeds on the tape depends on the cold resistance of the variety. At early planting, the seeds use spring soil moisture and still cool weather, spring up earlier than a carrot fly appears. The sooner the first seeds are planted, the more time will be left for re-seeding in case of poor germination.

The best time for planting most varieties - the end of April. In this case, the first harvest will arrive in July. Late varieties with proper planting (to a depth of 5 cm) can survive the winter and sprout in early spring.

But it is better to glue the seeds yourself in winter, before the summer season.

Varieties can take any, but suitable to the local climate and type of soil. It is also important to take into account the time of harvest: early ripening varieties - 85-100 days, middle-ripening - 105-120 days, late-ripening - from 125 days, as well as the appearance of root crops, if important.

Variety selection

Depending on the shape of the root, all varieties of carrots are conventionally divided into conical, cylindrical, and round. The first variety is the most common, more resistant to diseases and unpretentious in the care. By maturity varieties are divided into early, medium and late ripening.

When choosing carrots for planting in open ground, you need to focus on the climate in the region, the composition and quality of the soil, as well as the purpose of cultivation. For fresh consumption in the summer it is best to plant early varieties, and later varieties are suitable for long-term storage.

Seed preparation

Seeds of carrots are of small size, as a result of which it is difficult to observe the rate of sowing, and also they do not grow well in fertile soil. Before planting, they must be processed.

Seed preparation scheme:

  1. Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours, changing the water several times during the day.
  2. For stratification, the seeds after soaking should be placed in a refrigerator or put on the street for 1-2 days.
  3. To increase the germination of seeds, they must first be treated in boiling water (up to 50 ° C) for several minutes and then thoroughly rinsed with cold water.
  4. Sparging using growth stimulants is recommended. For this purpose apply Kornevin, Appin or Zircon.

Seeds are prepared for planting a few days before being placed directly in open ground. If after processing a lot of time passes, the effectiveness of the procedure decreases significantly.

Landing dates

It is possible to sow seeds in soil when the earth warms to 4-6 ° C, in mid-latitudes such temperatures are observed towards the end of April, and in colder regions, the landing can be postponed for several weeks, until the second decade of May.

Carrots are a frost-resistant crop, so seeds that have already been planted in the soil can survive night frosts down to -4 ° C, but to improve germination, plantings can be covered in case of a cold snap.

It is important to consider the characteristics of the variety. For example, late and mid-late varieties of carrots should be planted a little later than early varieties. The recommended landing period for them is mid-May.

Some varieties of root vegetables can be planted at the end of autumn, usually it is produced before the first snowfall. It should be borne in mind that the variety was frost-resistant and late. This method of planting allows you to get an early harvest by mid-summer.

Site selection and soil preparation

It is best to choose a plot for planting carrots in a well-lit place, without a strong surface slope. It is not recommended to use the beds where umbrella crops were previously located - parsley, cumin, dill and fennel. Failure of crop rotation leads to the development of serious diseases. Cucumbers, tomatoes, legumes and cereals are best suited as a precursor.

Processing and feeding of soil in the area depends on the timing of planting. For spring planting fertilizers need to be made in the fall. To do this, you need to dig the bed to the depth of the spade bayonet, completely remove the plant roots and weeds.

Carrots do not tolerate acidic soils; therefore, to adjust the acid balance, it is recommended to add wood ash, dolomite flour or lime at the rate of 0.5 kg per 1 m2. As mineral fertilizers, it is best to use potash or phosphate compounds, since the nitrogen top dressing of the soil leads to the active growth of the green part, and not the formation of a root crop.

How to plant?

After preparing the seeds and soil, you can start planting carrots. The procedure is preferably carried out in the morning in sunny weather.

How to grow and plant carrots:

  1. Seeds are planted in rows with a distance of up to 20 cm apart, the embedment depth should not exceed 2 cm in heavy soil and 3 cm in loose fertile soil.
  2. The optimal distance between the seeds is 3-4 cm.
  3. After embedding the planting material in the ground, the rows are covered with soil and poured abundantly with water.
  4. To avoid weeds and the formation of roots on the top layer of soil, it is necessary to carry out mulching. The recommended thickness is 3-4 cm. Sawdust, peat or straw are used as the material.

Since the seeds are very small, use the roll method of planting. To do this, put a drop of paste from a starch on a narrow strip of toilet paper, and then planting material on the basis of 2-3 seeds per one drop of adhesive. After that, the tape is dried and placed in the ground. The subsequent landing algorithm is identical.

Thinning seedlings

All varieties of carrots demonstrate uneven germination, the difference between the appearance of seedlings can be more than a week. The first thinning and weeding is recommended to be done when the seedlings reach a height of 2-3 cm. Young plants are pulled out one by one, trying to create the most even line. It is advisable to leave the distance between the remaining sprouts no more than 2-3 cm.

The second thinning is best done when a small root crop and a healthy green portion of carrots are formed. Severe neglect of sowing harms crop yields, so the distance between each plant must be maintained. The optimal distance between carrot bushes after the second weeding is 4-5 cm.

In addition to thinning, simple rules of care must be followed to increase yields and maintain plant health.

The main ones are:

  1. During the entire period of growth, moderate watering is required at the rate of 10 liters of water per 1m2, a few weeks before harvesting it must be completely stopped.
  2. Feeding is carried out twice per season - during the formation of seedlings, as well as for 2-3 months after planting. It is recommended to use a complex mixture. In 10 liters of water dilute 1 tbsp. l nitrofoski, 1 tbsp. wood ash, 20 g of potash nitrate and 15 g of double superphosphate.
  3. Weeding should be carried out as weeds grow, usually 2-3 times per season. The use of mulch reduces the growth of other plants in the garden.
  4. Treatment from pests and diseases is carried out only in case of infection, as carrots have a strong immunity, and also repels most insects. The most frequent diseases are bacteriosis, white and black rot, and also septoria. The most dangerous pests are carrot fly and moles.

One of the highlights of carrot care is loosening. Without this procedure, the roots grow small and crooked. Loosening is usually combined with weeding or thinning.

Carrots are one of the most common and important crops. This is a fast-growing plant that is well tolerated in any soil. That is why the majority of gardeners are trying to plant its seeds in open ground. The quality and quantity of the crop depends not only on the variety, the proper preparation of the seeds, but also the compliance with the agricultural technology.

One of the most popular and common types of vegetables is carrots. This root crop is in the top ten of the most economically important and beneficial crops in our vast world. Very widely distributed in Mediterranean countries such as Africa, New Zealand, Australia and America, as well as throughout Europe.

Carrot is a biennial herb. It grows in height up to 30 cm. It has the most useful and healing propertiesnecessary for the human body. Its rich composition contains:

  • vitamins: groups B, PP, C, E, K,
  • the substance keratin, which in the human body turns into vitamin A.
  • minerals needed by the human body: potassium, iron, phosphorus, copper, iodine, etc.,
  • essential oils that give the vegetable a strong aroma.

This plant is unpretentious in growing, prefers not sour, loose, loamy and sandy soil. In such a soil root crop becomes sweet, juicy and tasty. Before planting carrots, the soil is treated twice a year - in the fall, after harvesting, and in the spring, before planting.

In the autumn, the earth is dug up to a depth of about 10 cm and at the same time leveled with a rake - this is necessary to saturate it with oxygen before hibernation. In the spring, simply loosen the soil, after which it is saturated with organic matter. It is also important to choose the right place for sowing crops, as this type of culture loves the sun very much, but does not like excessive moisture. Therefore, the best place is where there is access to the sun's rays.

The process of planting carrots on the tape

To facilitate planting, as well as for harvesting, gardeners can use ready-made planting paper. The material used for planting vegetables, is a paper strip, which is already with the seeds of the root. In the finished form, it is sold long and narrow about 2 cm wide. This is convenient for optimal and high-quality development of the fetus, and in addition there is no need for thinning of the seedlings and laborious weeding. You can also make your own planting tape, while using, for example, toilet paper.

Use of landing tape

Ready planting tape is convenient because the seeds are located on it at an optimal distance from each other. This saves time gardener when planting carrots. The tape must be put in the already prepared grooves and covered with earth.

Landing on toilet paper

Before planting carrots on toilet paper, it is necessary to lubricate it with paste, which can be cooked from a mixture of starch and water or flour and hot water, then you need to sprinkle carrot seeds on toilet paper. Seeds pre washed with clean water and dried. It is necessary to lay this finished tape on the grooves prepared in the ground with a distance of 20-25 cm from each other, and the depth should be about 3 cm.

Land before planting leveled and loosened a couple of days before sowing, then watered with a small amount of water. Be sure to control the soil moisture, for this it is desirable to use covering material. In this way, moisture and heat are preserved, which is necessary with the growth of the root crop. And most importantly - in the process of growing vegetables do not require additional feeding.

Carrot Care Tips

When the carrot begins to germinate, the covering material that was used to conserve heat and moisture can be removed. After that, you need to gently loosen the ground. Water moderately and evenly.

But if toilet paper was used, then thinning of the plant is necessary as soon as first leaves appeared in germinated plants. If necessary, this method thinned young shoots of carrots several times. After this procedure, watered with a small amount of water and periodically weed.

Harvesting and storage

There are different varieties of carrots, depending on the time of harvest:

  • Early variety,
  • Average grade
  • Late variety.

Seeds of carrots with early ripening are sown before winter and the harvest is done closer to the middle of summer. Such a fruit can be harvested when it already reaches about 1 cm in diameter. The vegetable is very sweet and juicy. To preserve the most useful properties and pleasant taste of the early harvest, you need to collect it in time. The only negative is the unsuitability for long storage.

Gross yield average maturity of the fruit collected from 80 to 110 days, no more, because the root crop will be tasteless and loose. Another feature that speaks of the ripening of this variety is the yellowed leaves.

Late harvest is considered closer to mid-September. The main thing, after the root crop has been gathered, to cut off the green tops, it is necessary for long storage.

There are many ways to store plants. In order to preserve the harvest as best as possible, the main thing is to harvest it in time and keep it cool: in the refrigerator, cellar or on the balcony at about 0-5 degrees.

Pests and diseases of vegetables

Unfortunately, plants are exposed to various infectious diseases. For example, such as white rot, which destroys the whole plant, after which eat and store vegetables can not. This type of rot, as gray, causes disease in the storage period of the root. Felt rot appears on carrots not only during storage but also during ripening. And many other types of disease.

Carrots can be affected by several insect pests at the same time. This occurs not only during the maturation of the plant, but also after harvest and during vegetable storage. The most dangerous pests are carrot flies and their larvae, carrot listoblock and moths. Of the large insects, there may be a bear, bare slugs and a wireworm (yellow worm).

But if you follow certain rules when planting and caring for different varieties of vegetables, the carrots will grow big, juicy, tasty, useful and able to be stored for a long time.

Carrots - the root vegetable, found in areas even beginner gardeners. It is rich in vitamins and microelements, and exceeds keratin in its content of all vegetables and fruits (except sea buckthorn). To grow large and even fruits, you should know the nuances of cultivation.

Site location and illumination

To grow carrots, choose a well-lit area - direct sunlight throughout the day to the benefit of the plant. When grown in the shade, yields are reduced, taste deteriorates.

The soil needs a loose, neutral or weakly acid reaction. Light sandy or loamy soils are suitable. In dense loam fruits grow small, quickly affected by rot during storage.

When to plant carrots before winter

For early carrots or so-called beam products, they are sown before winter or in early spring. The first option is possible only in warm climatic zones - even under a thick layer of covering material, the seeds freeze out under harsh conditions.

Subwinter seeding carrots is carried out at the end of October, when warming is not expected. If the seeds hatch and grow in the fall, the cold will ruin them. Therefore, the time of sowing try to push as far as possible by the end of autumn.

Planting carrots in spring in open ground terms

Carry out spring planting of carrots as soon as the top layer of soil warms up to a temperature of 4-6 ° C. In the middle lane is about the end of April.

First, select high-quality seeds: put them in a solution of edible salt for 3-5 minutes, floating up to the surface are not suitable for sowing. Rinse the rest under running water, hold for 24 hours in a damp cloth moistened with growth stimulant solution. Before sowing, the seeds are dried to flowability and immediately sown.

Is it possible to germinate carrot seeds before planting

Some gardeners to speed up germination do the following. Place the seeds on a damp cloth and incubate at a temperature of 20-24 ° C for 5-6 days. It is important that the seeds only swell, but do not germinate, otherwise the shoots will be damaged during transplantation and the seeds will not sprout. Before sowing, the seeds are slightly dried to flowability and immediately sown.

Seeds of carrots can be prepared for sowing and in an unusual way: they are wrapped in cloth and instilled deeper in the garden until the time when the ground is ripe (approximately on a spade bayonet). Leave them in the ground for 10 days. Seeds will not hatch, but prepare well for rapid germination. Dry them a little and sow immediately.

Do I need to water carrots after planting?

If the weather is cool and wet, there is no need for watering. In warm sunny days the soil dries out quickly, in this case, moderate watering will not be superfluous. However, remember: an excessive amount of moisture will cause the formation of an earth crust, which is even worse than the lack of watering. Therefore, moisturize gently, only slightly sprinkling the garden bed. Watering is repeated every morning until germination. After it will be possible to break through the rows and water less frequently, after 1-2 days, with the obligatory loosening between the rows, until they are closed by the grown leaves.

How many carrot seeds sprout?

When the weather is warm, the seeds will sprout in about a week. Germination time is doubled if the air temperature is below 12 ° C. Empty places fill up with additional seeding.

Under winter, seeds are sown at soil temperature below +5 ° C. Deepen the seeds by 2 cm. The thickness of the mulch layer should be 3-4 cm. If the snow cover is insignificant, additionally cover it with lapnik, increasing the layer to half a meter.

Watering carrots after planting and further

Juiciness and sweet taste of root crops depends on watering. Ensure regular watering at all stages of carrot growth. The soil should be wetted to depth in accordance with the size of the root. Water the garden bed with adult carrots so that the soil gets wet by 30 cm. From the lack of moisture, the fruit is sluggish, with a bitter aftertaste.

Water in 3-4 days, adding 30-40 liters of water per m² to give moisture to form root crops. Medium-sized roots are able to find moisture on their own - add 10-20 liters of water per 1 m² once a week. From the end of August, 8-10 liters of water per 1 m² every 1.5-2 weeks is enough. 2 weeks prior to harvest, withstand carrots without watering.

Sharp drops from drying up the soil to excess moisture lead to cracking of the fruit, which worsens their keeping quality.

Regularly loosen the aisles, weed the planting from the weeds.

Carrots should be fed twice per season. Spend the first feeding in 3-4 weeks after emergence of shoots, the second - in a couple of months. Fertilizer is applied in liquid form. At 10 liters of water, add a choice: 2 cups of wood ash, 1 tbsp. l nitrophosphate, 20 g of potassium nitrate, 15 g of double superphosphate and urea.

Diseases and pests of carrots

Carrot fly - the main enemy of the plant. It appears during thickened plantings, in the presence of weeds, from excessive soil moisture. You will understand that the plantation is struck by a carrot fly, according to the following features: the leaves will start to curl and dry. It should be urgently treated with insecticide.

To protect against carrot flies, carrots are planted near the beds of carrots, the smell of which deters pests.

Diseases carrots are weak. Possible defeat fomozom, alternariozom. The risk of disease is reduced by treating the beds with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquids.

Harvesting carrots

How to clean and store carrots

Carrots are not afraid of cold weather, but low air temperature (below +8 ° C) contributes to the conversion of starch into sugar, which will negatively affect keeping quality. In the middle band, carrot harvest should be collected at the end of September. Do this in dry weather. Dig carrots, shake the roots off the ground, hold in the air (not under direct sunlight) for about 1.5-2 hours, then cut the tops. Sort the crop, even fruits without damage, put in aerated boxes, store in a cool dark place.

This year, in order to facilitate their work, they decided to sow carrots with the help of a sowing tape. I liked this idea, because planting carrots on paper makes it very easy to take care of the beds!

It is not necessary to do thinning under the scorching sun, and in summer it is very tiring and takes a lot of time that you can spend on rest ...

Prehistory

Last year, I was so unhappy with the germination of carrots, I even told myself that I don’t want to plant it at all this year, but spring came and I wanted to have my young carrot in July - it’s sweeter once every 100

And one more thing in favor of the sowing tape - if a good rain falls after planting the carrot, then the carrots that have just been sown can “leak” - most likely this is what happened to me last year (it rained for several days).

I think that many gardeners are now trying to plant carrots on a tape, and I decided to deepen this issue not only for myself, but also for you, dear readers. So, how to properly use the seed belt to obtain the best result of germination? And are there any alternative tape options? We'll figure out…

Soil preparation

Very important for the germination of carrots is properly prepared soil. And we will have to prepare our beds two weeks before planting, and not according to the principle - I arrived at the dacha, dug-loosened-planted, and all this in two days off.

A week before planting, and better for two, it is necessary to loosen the soil to a depth of 10 cm, then we must immediately take a rake and dub the bed. Of course, there is a view of the land, dug up in the fall on a spade bayonet.

Laying ribbon with seeds

Immediately before sowing, we again loosen a bed, make shallow grooves - two centimeters, and put a sowing ribbon in the furrow. Then gently pour a little water and cover it with earth. It is very easy to level the ground and water it again - carefully, so as not to wash the soil from the tape.

The secret of the gardener: With the help of ripe compost, laid a layer of half a centimeter, you can significantly improve germination!

Sticking carrot seeds on paper by yourself

Another recipe for this is that you can make a seed strip with carrot seeds with your own hands! To do this, take a paper with a loose texture (toilet or newsprint is well suited), cut it along into strips 2 cm wide.

From each half we make a sowing campaign as follows: brew a paste from starch or flour, drip onto paper and put carrot seeds in 2.5 cm increments.

Kleister is done like this - for 1 cup of water 1 tsp. starch or flour.

There is another tricky way - to take a two-layer toilet paper, slightly stratify from the edge and put seeds between layers.

Planting carrots on toilet paper

Another interesting offer from one summer resident on the forum met - not to cut a roll of toilet paper lengthily, but simply fold the paper in half, sticking sunflower seeds gradually unrolling a roll, see photo below ... It saves time and production of the tape itself, and planting!

You can additionally fertilize our seeding tape - add mineral fertilizers to the paste water for cooking. The ratio is based on 1 liter of water a tablespoon of mineral fertilizer.

You can glue the seeds in the winter, before the summer season. You must admit that in winter most often there is nothing special to do, so there is more than enough free time.

Soil preparation

Advantages of the non-standard method

The method of placing carrot seeds on a specially prepared tape is designed to greatly simplify the work of the gardener, because sowing is easy enough. This method has recently enjoyed considerable popularity, because it has significant advantages over other usual methods:

  • seeds are clearly distributed over the surface of the tape,
  • maximum convenience when putting a seed ribbon in the ground,
  • significant savings in seed,
  • extreme simplicity in the care of seedlings,
  • guaranteed a generous harvest.

In addition, the seeds of carrots, which were planted in a tape way, are absolutely not afraid of any weather changes. Neither heavy rain, nor even the sudden melting of snow can wash the seeds from the open ground. And given the fact that under the layer of paper, any weeds grow very poorly, they will not be able to drown out developing young seedlings.

Preparation of material and seeds

Before you start placing the carrot seeds on paper tape, you should do their thorough preparation and sorting. For this, the selected seed variety should be placed in a container with distilled water at room temperature. After some time, unsuitable carrots nucleoli will float to the surface, and suitable for sowing will remain at the bottom of the tank. Defective seeds should be removed immediately so that they do not clog the water.

After 24 hours, it will become completely clear which nucleoli are suitable for sowing. After the defective seeds are removed from the water, you can safely continue to work with high-quality seed. It is necessary to dry suitable carrots kernels, because in the dry state it will be easier to take them for placement on a paper tape.

For sowing on the tape, you can buy paper in a specialty store, but it is also not difficult to prepare it yourself at home. It is advisable to take white toilet paper. It is quite soft, so it will get wet faster after applying glue. However, if the toilet roll is not at hand, it is acceptable to take plain thin paper and cut it into wide strips.

Next, you should do the preparation of paste, through which it will be possible to stick the seeds on homemade paper tape or toilet paper. It is easy to make from flour or starch. In the first case, it is necessary to boil water in an enamel pan, then pour flour into it in a thin stream, stirring the liquid regularly. As soon as the mass begins to acquire relative density, it is necessary to remove the pan from the heat and allow the glue to cool. Flour paste must be cooked based on the proportion of 1 tbsp. l flour per 100 ml of water.

If starch is used to make paste, then it is necessary to fill the enamel pan with 400 ml of water and bring it to a boil. While the water is boiling, you need to dissolve 2 tbsp in a separate bowl. l dry starch in 100 ml of warm water. Then in boiling water should be a thin stream pour the dissolved starch, carefully stirring the resulting liquid. It is important to ensure that the paste is not too thick.

Sowing seeds on paper

The process of placing the carrot nucleoli on a paper tape is very simple, but only if you take into account some important nuances. Regardless of whether the paper tape was purchased in a specialty store or cut independently at home, you should spread it on the floor, previously covered with some white cloth.

If necessary, you can carefully divide them with a match to increase the distance between the seeds.

After sticking carrots nucleoli, paper tapes should be dried for 24 hours near the battery, and then put into paper bags before sowing.

Planting carrots on tape

It is very easy to place carrots on a tape in open ground; it is enough just to dig up not less than 2 cm deep grooves on the ground that has been prearranged, and then place paper tapes with glued seeds in them. At the same time, the ribbons should be laid out across the width of the bed, placing them so that the seeds looked up.

Then it is necessary to sprinkle the tape with the carrot nucleoli with dry earth and only then it is allowed to pour plenty of seedlings with lukewarm water so that the paper will soak faster and the seeds will grow.

Planting carrots on napkins

She found another interesting variant of planting carrots - on napkins. The principle is similar to ribbons, with the only difference that you immediately form a bed, sticking seeds like your roots will grow.

At home, you prepare napkins by sticking carrot seeds in 5 cm increments in a row and between rows.

Well, on the bed already spread their napkins and sprinkle with a layer of soil. It turns out immediately formed ridge, which does not need to thin out.

What carrot seeds to take

For sticking, it is better to take high-quality, high-quality seeds, their germination will be better, and the result will please in the autumn. And this method of sticking seeds on paper will save them from disappearing, so to speak, in vain 🙂

Dragee-free carrot seeds are also on sale, they are easier to glue, but they require more watering at first, because the seed is located inside the pea-like fertilizer and filler. They need some time to swell and give moisture to the seed inside. But the plus is that the sprout will immediately have food and the growth of the seedling will be optimal.

In the same way, you can make a sowing tape with seeds of other vegetable crops and greens with small seeds, such as lettuce, dill, celery. Than in summer in a kneeling pose to do thinning, it is better to make a paper ribbon with seeds in advance and not to know grief 🙂 The winter is long, what else to do, if not to prepare for the planting season.

These are the tricks about planting carrots on toilet paper, I learned. As you can see there are options and more expensive - and more economical, with large labor costs (which, of course, then pay off) and with less! We are approaching the garden creatively, comrades! Enjoying, so to speak, the process! 🙂
