Bellarosa potato variety: description with photo, description and reviews

It's nice to dig potatoes when you find palm-sized tubers in the ground. And when you cook them, they only moderately crumble. Already these two positive qualities of the variety Bellaroza are able to interest many gardeners. So why not get to know this foreigner better?

The history of the potato Bellarosa

The variety with the romantic name of Bellarosa appeared in Lower Saxony, the city of Luneburg (Germany). The originator and creator is the company "Europlant" (EUROPLANT). Since 1993, she has been engaged in breeding new varieties, hybrids of potatoes and selling it around the world. Representative offices operate in 70 countries.

Bellaroz was officially brought to Russia in 2004. It was then that the experts of EUROPLANT submitted an application to the State Commission of the Russian Federation on variety testing. The variety was tested and in 2006 was listed in the State Register of Breeding Achievements as zoned for the Central Chernozem, Volgo-Vyatka, North-West and Ural regions.

Russians have a tradition to change foreign words in their own, understandable way. She touched and Bellarozy, the names have already taken root: Belarossa, Bela Rosa and Bella Rosa. This fact is only proof of sympathy for the variety.

Variety description

Bella rosa in Italian means “Beautiful Rose”. Perhaps the authors gave the name of the potato for the red-purple corollas that covered the bushes during flowering. And the tuber peel is red and velvety. The flesh inside is yellow, not strongly boiled soft, not watery. Bellarosa tubers are oval, smooth, not covered with scab ulcers. The variety has resistance to this unpleasant disease.

Bellarosa tubers are red, oval, smooth

Potatoes are very productive, grown on an industrial scale. Tubers are heavy, some 800 g or more, the average weight is 117–207 g. The maximum yield is 385 centners per hectare, the average is 169–326 centners per hectare. By this indicator, Bellarosa surpasses the famous Nevsky by 34–155 centners per hectare. At the same time, the variety is early ripening, and its harvest can be harvested twice! The first time - 45 days after the emergence of shoots, the second - after 55 days. During the first digging, the bushes gently break in, they collect large tubers, and small ones leave to grow further.

In the southern regions they have time to grow Bellaroz twice, plant in March-April and in the beginning of June. However, there is a minus: the second harvest occurs at the end of summer - autumn, and this potato is unstable to the phytophthora, which develops in wet and cool weather. According to observations of potato growers, the variety remains productive in the heat and drought, it grows well on sandy and sandy soils. When other varieties dry out and produce peas, Bellarosa, on the contrary, shows good results.

Among the advantages is also excellent keeping quality, the tubers retain their presentation until the next harvest. Variety resistant to viral diseases, but susceptible to fungal. In addition to phytophthora, it can be affected by rhizoctoniosis. Those who grow this variety have to take into account the tendency of the bushes to grow in breadth. When digging, you can poke a tuber that has grown aside, or not notice it and leave it in the ground. When cooking, there is sometimes a slight darkening of the pulp.

Features of growing

Seed tubers of the potato Bellaroz are recommended to be preheated and germinated. To do this, a month before planting, transfer the tubers from the cellar or basement to a warm (+ 18 ... +22 ° C) and bright room. For the prevention of fungal diseases, wash them, if you have not done so in the autumn, adding copper sulfate to the water (50 g per 10 l of water), dry it and spread it out in the light in 1-2 layers. Once a week, turn the tubers on the other side and spray with clean, better thawed or rain, water.

To not sprout sprouts, were strong, germinate the tubers in the light

For Bellaroza, crop rotation is important, it cannot be planted on the field, where potatoes or any other solanaceous crop already grew. The best predecessors: cabbage, beans and pumpkin. Fertilize the land by adding 1 m²: 2 buckets of humus (manure can be used in the fall) and 0.5 liters of wood ash. If you do not have enough organics, then pour into the wells of a handful. With its complete absence, buy special mixes for potatoes or universal for any vegetables. They are produced under the brands: Forte, Agros, Fertika, Hera.

To land, proceed when the earth warms to +8 ° C. Do the holes at a distance of 30 cm from each other, the row spacing is 70 cm, but it is possible to plant more spaciously. The better the bushes will be lit, warmed and aired, the larger the tubers will grow on them. Planting depth - 8–10 cm. To protect against the Colorado potato beetle, wireworm, and crunchy, process the potatoes spread out over the holes with a solution of the Tabu preparation.

High agricultural techniques will help you to get the maximum harvest from Bellarosa:

  • Water irrigation in dry weather once a week.
  • Loosen the aisles after each watering and rain.
  • Feed:
    • The first time a week after the emergence of shoots of nitrogen-containing fertilizer, for example, urea, ammonium nitrate, or mullein extract, litter, nettle.
    • The second time in the period of budding with complex fertilizer with potassium, phosphorus and microelements, for example, BioMaster universal vegetable concentrate. Wood ash will do. Powder the earth with it and rustle.
  • Spud. For an early variety, it is enough to do this once, before flowering, immediately after the second feeding.
  • Protect against pests. When detecting Colorado beetles, spray Aktar or Karbofos, repeat treatment after 7–10 days.
  • Disease prevention, especially in rainy summer. When the tops grow 15–20 cm in height, spray it with a solution of the fungicide (Skor, HOM, Horus).

Harvest and Destination

A week before harvesting the tops is recommended to mow and remove from the field. Such an event will be an additional measure of prevention of late blight. Dig out the bushes of Bellarosa, well receding from the base. Then there will be more chances to find all the tubers in the ground and not to damage them. From the most productive bush, set aside for seeds tubers the size of a chicken egg (35–55 g).

Store only whole potatoes for storage. Put them in an airtight container: nets, baskets, boxes. Before moving to a cellar or other storage facility, let the crop rest for a week in a dark and ventilated place, for example, under a shed or in a shed. Tubers will dry out, their skin will harden, become more resistant to mechanical damage, reduce the risk of damage from rot. Potatoes with defects immediately send to the kitchen for cooking.

The purpose of the variety is table. Starch content is 12.6–15.7%. From the potato of Bellaroza, a tasty mash is obtained, it does not dissolve in soups, it is suitable for stewing with meat and other vegetables.

Reviews for potato Bellarosa

I like Belarossa variety. Gives a good harvest, well preserved. I like it to eat puree, in general, a good grade, I can advise everyone to try to plant.

There are varieties that are resistant to many adversities and are the easiest to care for and grow: Adretta, Luck, Impala, Bellarosa, Kiwi, Rosara. These showed themselves from the rays of the side both in the hot Steppe and in the wet Polesye.

for many potato growers, Bellarosa is almost a standard for potato taste

I really love the variety of potato “Bellaroza”, it is very popular among buyers in the market, the potato is not boiled soft, not watery, it keeps its shape, if cooked in uniform, well, for frying it is better to pick up some other variety. The taste of "Bellarosa" is sweetish, I advise you to plant such potatoes on everyone in your plot. The variety is high-yielding, early, drought-resistant, high palatability, very high resistance to viruses. Beautiful trade dress - pink skin, small eyes, even tubers.

Good yield gives "Bellarosa". From this potato it turns out very tasty mashed potatoes.

In the vegetable garden, the yield of Bela Rosa and Sante amounted to no more than 300 centners per hectare, counted at a minimum, from 3 hectares 90 +5 buckets of one, and about the same other variety. There was no watering and no manure for two years. The first had time to grow, but the second, Sante, fell under the burning rays and lost in the harvest! At 11 am on the ground barefoot was impossible to resist. Plowing, Prestige treatment, hilling, Zenkor herbicide, one treatment from phytophthora and that's it! It all depends on the variety and conditions.

Personally, I grow two types of potatoes: Bella Rosa, Typhoon. Bella Rose this year showed just amazing yields. Seated 7 bags and collected 125, and small of it only 1.5 bags. The variety is good, not very solid, it is stored very well until the new harvest. I noticed that the hotter and drier the summer, the higher the harvest. The variety is very afraid of phytophtora. Typhoon: from 1 bag he took 20. Shallow more than Bella Rose. Tastes are much inferior to Bella Rose, but the taste and color of a friend is not. Saved well too.

Very good in the past hot, hot year, early ripening potato varieties showed themselves, such as Bella Rosa (Germany), Dolphin (Belarus), Agave (Germany), Betina (Germany), Coletta (Germany), Solara (Germany), Tiras (Ukraine), Riddle (Ukraine). All these varieties grow beautifully on sandy-loamy soils.

Bellarosa is a very early and high-yielding variety with large tubers. Due to its plasticity, it grows well on soils of different structure, it is not afraid of heat and drought. The variety can be a starting point for farmers who are just starting their potato business. A simple gardeners have long been chosen and grown this potato.

Bellarosa potato - variety description, photo + video

Among the early vegetables deserves special attention Bellaroza potatoes, a description of the variety, its photos are presented below. Such potatoes are suitable for their own use and implementation.

Bred by researchers in Germany, it has a good taste. Picking up a variety of potatoes that can be planted on the garden plot, I want the yield to be high and the growing process to be simple.

Much depends on the quality of the soil, climate and the presence of pests.

In describing the great attention is paid to tubers, because this is the part of the plant for which it is grown.

  1. The form. Round, oval.
  2. Peel. Thick, slightly rough, from pink to red shades.
  3. The flesh. Dense, cream or yellow shades, well boiled soft, when cooking does not darken, taste sweet.
  4. Eyes. Small, rare and shallow.
  5. Tuber. It can reach 0.8 kg, but usually ranges from 0.115 to 0.21 kg. The average number of tubers per plant is 10 pcs.
  6. Starch content. From 12.7% to 15.8%.

This variety is distinguished by precocity. From the moment of planting to harvesting, no more than 65 days pass. Partial digging up of tubers is possible in 45-50 days.

Large Tubers of Bellaroza Variety Potatoes

In the south, it is possible to harvest two harvests during the season. Planted in May, potatoes are harvested at the end of June. The second planting is carried out in early July, harvesting in the first days of September.

The variety description contains information about record yields. On average, it is 25-35 t / ha. Under favorable conditions, it can reach 40 t / ha. At the same time, up to 93% of tubers have a marketable appearance (photo 1).

Due to its good drought tolerance, potatoes can be grown in large areas where it is difficult to arrange regular watering. It can be planted in arid regions, on any soil, except clay, because it badly affects the taste and size of the vegetable.

Bellarosa is characterized by excellent taste. On a five-point scale, it received a well-deserved rating of 5. During cooking, it is moderately boiled soft, therefore it can be used both for mashing and frying. Bellarosa is well preserved, although it is an early variety.

The first time the plot for planting dig in the fall. For a good harvest, the fertile layer should be 30 cm. To increase the fertility of the soil, compost or humus is applied at the rate of 5 to 9 kg per square meter. m

In the spring, they dig up the earth again, enriching it with fertilizers, which not only promote growth, but also protect plants from diseases and pests. It is recommended to use such types of fertilizers as:

  • ammonium nitrate,
  • ammonium sulfate,
  • potassium sulfate
  • chloride stone.

Digging up the soil before planting

Any top dressing should be used sparingly, because the excess can contribute to decay and accumulate in the vegetable.

In order to avoid depletion of the soil, it is recommended to take breaks or plant potatoes in areas where cucumbers, beets, greens or cabbage were previously grown. Do not advise to plant this vegetable after the growth of solanaceous crops.

To achieve a good harvest, before sowing, potatoes are poured into shallow boxes. It is recommended to lay seed potatoes in 1-2 layers. Capacities are left in a lit place at air temperature up to 15 ° C above zero. During this period, sprouts are formed in the eyes.

Since each plant will bring about a dozen large tubers, it is important to maintain a distance between them when planting. The holes in the same row dig every 40 cm, and the rows are placed 90 cm.

Already during planting, fertilizer is placed at the bottom of the well, which includes phosphorus and potassium. Seed tubers of Bellarosa potato are laid on top and covered with a layer of earth.

The optimum depth of landing is from 8 to 10 cm.

Early varieties need to be further fed with magnesium fertilizers. Well proven use of dolomite flour. For 1 square meter use 50 grams of fertilizer.

Watering is needed only in particularly arid regions. Potato varieties are drought tolerant and have enough natural rainfall.

Planting potatoes in the ground

For good development, the plant requires weeding and loosening the soil. So weeds are removed, and the air freely penetrates the ground. Loosening is recommended after heavy rain, during ripening it is necessary to loosen the soil at least 3 times. For the first time it is done in 1-2 weeks after planting, when the first shoots appear.

Potato bushes are tall and straight, as evidenced by the description of the variety. Under favorable conditions, the size of the upper part reaches from 50 to 80 cm. As the root system grows, it goes deeper into the soil by 20 cm. Blue and purple flowers crowns the green.

To increase the yield, you need to choose the most lighted areas. Lack of sunlight causes tuber formation to stop. It is noticed that potatoes with red, pink or purple tubers withstand high soil temperature in the summer heat.

Harvest from one bush

Before harvesting, it is recommended to mow the tops in a week in order to increase the outflow of juices to the tubers. It promotes ripening and improves the storage of vegetables. Dig a shovel or other devices between the rows, so as not to damage the tubers.

After cleaning, they are placed in drying boxes and left for 7-9 days. Then select the appropriate potato for sowing next year.

Damaged tubers are harvested separately during harvesting so that the bulk of the crop does not suffer during the decay process.

Store tubers in a dry cool place at a temperature of not more than +10 ° C. The ability during storage for a long time not to sprout and maintain the elasticity of the vegetable is determined by keeping quality. Even after 7-8 months of storage, more than 90% of the tubers retain their presentation.

In order for breeding varieties of potatoes to maintain yield and resistance to environmental conditions, it is necessary to periodically update the seed material.

Elite tubers are able to maintain the characteristics of up to five generations, and then you need to make a replacement. For planting, you can use not only the potato itself, but also its seeds.

They can be bought at the store, ordered by mail or collected by yourself.

For sowing seeds using boxes with soil from 20% of the land and 80% peat. Sowing is carried out at the end of March. They leave a distance of 10 cm between the rows, and between the seeds in the row - 5 cm. Sprinkle with a layer of sand 0.5 cm thick. After 2-3 weeks, the sprouts already have two true leaves and are to be transplanted into peat pots.

Seed shoots

In mid-May, seedlings are planted in open ground to a depth of 10 cm, so that only a stem with three leaves is left on the surface. Then everything goes as when sowing tubers. In the first year, the sizes of vegetables are smaller than usual; up to 1 kg of potatoes are harvested from one plant. If the first planting is carried out in a greenhouse, then the size of tubers and yield increase by 15-25%.

Vegetables grown from seeds (first generation) have the best quality characteristics. In the first two years of these tubers grow super-elite potatoes, then elite. And from the fourth year, ordinary potatoes. After 5-6 plantings, the yield begins to decrease, and the seed needs to be updated.

Breeders have made great strides in the resistance of Bellarosa to the following diseases:

  • potato cancer,
  • nematode (Bo1 + Bo4),
  • scab,
  • viruses Y and A,
  • rhizoctonia.

Healthy potato tubers

In addition, tubers are quite difficult to damage by mechanical means. And most of the damage during growth or immediately after harvest is restored and covered with skin. These properties allow you to grow Bellaroz where others do not show a good result.

“The productivity of bellarose just hit! Having planted 10 sacks of seed potatoes, we managed to collect 160. At the same time, only a couple of bags of small potatoes, the rest is all flat, large. Tubers of medium density, boil soft and taste great. Although early vegetables are usually poorly stored, these potatoes looked like they were harvested in the spring. ”

“If weather forecasters predict a dry summer, then Bellarozu should be chosen. She will not fail in drought and is not afraid of rain. It grows well in sandy and loamy soil. "

Description and characteristics

This type of vegetable belongs to the early ripening. Fruits on the 60-70 day after planting. But the first harvest can be harvested as early as 47-50 days after the appearance of greenery. In places with a warm climate, gardeners harvest two crops per season, because the bushes during the digging are not damaged.

The height of "Bellarosa" is up to 80 cm and is of an intermediate type. The leaves are large and closed. The flowering of this variety may be weak or completely absent. If you notice the lack of flowering - this is not a reason to sound the alarm.

You should not consider such a moment as a disease. This is just a feature of the brand. The reason for the lack of flowering can be insects that do not bear any harm, but feed exclusively on the flowers of the plant.

These include: ground beetle ordinary, ladybug and others.

Also, potatoes can lose their flowers if the temperature around is above +23 degrees. In addition, which often happens, flowering may not be because the plant is early ripening and simply does not have time to bloom.

Tubers have a flat oval-round shape. Are under the surface or else at an average depth. The crop has small eyes, rarely spaced from each other and rough red skin. The flesh contains up to 20% of starch and because of this is dry pale yellow.

On average, one bush brings up to 12 tubers, which weigh up to 300 grams. Individual bushes can bring up to 800 grams.

Commercial tubers have a weight of up to 250 grams. Their yield is 70 kg per 1 hectare more than the yield of other varieties. During the first assembly (on day 47), the average yield is 260 q / ha. With 2 digging (on day 60) 380 kg / ha.

Potato "Bellarosa" has a high taste (does not lose its properties after long-term storage). Ideal for cooking (for this reason it is considered a table variety).

Despite the friability, the tubers do not fall apart during cooking. Great for roasting in the oven, cooking chips and french fries.

It is stored, in comparison with other varieties, for a very long time, approximately until May.

It has high immunity to potato cancer, nematode, leaf curl viruses and other Alpha and Gamma viruses, late blight and others. In addition, it has resistance to droughts, temperature extremes, damage to and growth of tubers.

Today, Bellarosa potatoes are grown by agrofirms on a large scale.

Advantages in comparison with other varieties:

  • high yield. On one hectare of the area goes about 50 tons of potatoes,
  • after 60 days (that is, 2 months), you can enjoy delicious potato dishes, because it does not darken and crawl when cooked, is well fried and baked,
  • easily tolerates dry weather,
  • grows everywhere except clay soil,
  • has an excellent coefficient of preservation. When harvesting - 98% remain intact, and during storage - 90% are suitable for food until May.
  • the likelihood of resistance to such diseases as: alpha viruses, late blight, potato cancer and others.

Despite such a “young age”, this potato variety managed to establish itself with the best side among summer residents and gardeners.

Unbelievable, but it is a fact! "Bellarosa" was bred in 1999 and was recommended for germination only in North America. But other countries love this variety.

Soil preparation

  • The area on which potato cultivation will take place in the fall must be re-dug. It is necessary for the ground to become more crumbly during frosts,
  • for planting a layer of soil stands at 35 centimeters,
  • fertilizer must be applied to increase the fertility of the land. An excellent option would be to use organic fertilizers, such as humus or compost mass. For 1 square meter you need about 6 kilograms of fertilizer.
  • in the spring, the plot again needs digging and fertilizer. Ammonium nitrate or complex preparations will be an excellent fertilizer.

As for growing

Before planting potatoes, it must be prepared, namely, germinate. Its tubers are poured into a wooden (not plastic) box with one layer (it is best to pour directly on the ground) and left in the room until the potatoes germinate (this takes about 3 weeks).

Important! The temperature in the building should not exceed 17 degrees Celsius and the planting material should be provided with good lighting.

The main difference of the variety is that one bush can have up to 12 tubers. It is for this reason that the distance between the holes should be at least 35 centimeters.

Planting rows should be located not less than 95 cm from each other, and the depth of the hole should not exceed 20 cm. In order for the yield to be maximum, when planting potatoes in the ground, fertilizer that contains potassium must be poured at the bottom of each well.

Put the potatoes on fertilizer and sprinkle with soil.

If the planting material has not been previously processed and not germinated, it can be planted only during the period when the soil has warmed up to 10 degrees Celsius.

You may be interested in: It is worth noting! The closer the bushes are located to each other, the larger the crop.

For large tubers, an optimum landing is 80 cm between rows and 25 cm between bushes.

Plant Care

Potatoes "White Rose" perfectly take root and grows in any type of soil, except clay. But despite this, she still needs timely feeding and watering.

Everyone knows that in order to get a good harvest, you need proper and careful care.

All early ripening potato varieties need spring dressing with magnesium. In addition, fertilizers should be added in other periods:

  1. As soon as the first shoots are noticed, it is necessary to use chicken manure or manure tincture.
  2. Before flowering begins in the soil you need to add urea or a mixture with potassium and ash.
  3. Directly during the flowering itself it is necessary to add a solution, which will include mullein and superphosphate.

Important! Fertilizers need to be introduced after abundant watering or after good precipitation. If you use bait on dry soil, it is possible to burn the roots.

Most of the care is taken up by plant loosening and hilling. These two procedures are most important during the cultivation of potatoes of this type.

Loosening gives the potato constant air saturation, and the roots get more moisture. In addition, loosening the earth helps in weed control.

But despite the usefulness of the procedure, it should be carried out only at the time of active growth of plants, namely, until they reached 20 cm in height.

As soon as the fruitful culture has exceeded the threshold of twenty centimeters, the loosening of the soil is replaced by hilling. This procedure, as well as the previous one, allows the soil to improve throughput and fill the plants with oxygen.

How to perform hilling

We rake the ground as close as possible to the plant itself. You need to rake up so that in subsequent growth the soil keeps it upright, not allowing it to bend to the ground.

Fan hilling is the essence of such hilling not in scooping up the soil to a fruit bearing culture, but vice versa. We spread the branches of the bush in different directions, and in the middle impose a green mass. This is called mulching. As mulch, you can use any green plants, even weeds. The most effective is the mulching of freshly grown mustard.

This method will bring excellent results in small areas. Its main advantage is that under the green there will always be moisture, despite the hot weather.

Resistance to diseases and parasites

Potato "Bellarosa" differs from other varieties in that it is immune to such common diseases as:

  • potato cancer,
  • scab (all species except black),
  • rhizoctony,
  • wiry spot,
  • alpha and gamma virus.

But it is worth noting that the most common pests are dangerous for this variety. For this reason, pay attention to the protection of bushes from the Colorado potato beetle.

Characteristics and description of potatoes, variety "Bellaroza"

Sooner or later, almost every summer resident or gardener begins to think about making room for planting potatoes. After all, whatever the good potatoes in the store, their own tastier and better.

And one of the popular varieties today is Bellarosa. We will tell about him right now.

Disease and Pest Resistance

As noted above, breeders have achieved high resistance of this variety to diseases and viruses. Therefore, the potato "Bellarosa" is not afraid:

  • scab,
  • rhizoctoniosis,
  • viruses Y and A,
  • potato cancer.

These diseases cause significant damage to the crop, so resistant varieties like Bellarosa are very popular.

But at the same time the variety cannot boast of the presence of immunity to pests, so do not forget about the protection of the bushes from the Colorado potato beetle, the wireworm.

Characteristics of tubers

Tubers reach large and very large sizes: on average - 130-210 g, maximum - up to 800 grams.

Tubers are round-oval shape with small eyes, lying at a depth of 0.9-1.1 mm. The peel is red, slightly rough, the flesh is light yellow, slightly powdery, almost darkening during cleaning, cutting and heat treatment. Tastes of taste tasting - 6 points out of 9.

Potato "Bellarosa" according to the characteristics of the cooking quality refers to the type B (universal culinary destination), suitable for cooking any dishes, but it is most tasty in soups and during frying.

Tubers contain 20.3% of dry matter, which consists of:

Among the characteristics of tubers, it is important to note the excellent performance:

  • marketability - 82-99% of the total yield,
  • keeping quality - 93-96%.

When describing the variety of potato "Bellaroza" it is also necessary to note the low sensitivity to glandular spotting, mechanical damage, impact, and a high rest period.

Unlike most of the early ripe varieties, Bellarosa is successfully stored without loss of commercial and taste qualities, as it has a long dormancy period and a high safety factor (keeping quality) - about 96% even during early harvest. Many say that during storage, potatoes become even tastier.

Contraindications of potato Bellaroza

The variety itself is unique, but there are still some flaws:

Tendency to defeat late blight. Late blight is a common solanaceous disease. The disease occurs due to the fungus Phytophtora infestans.

It is distributed as soon as possible and can destroy up to 2/3 of the crop. The distribution process is carried out by zoospores, which are also in the soil or potatoes.

Zoospores transform together with moisture from a sick bush to a normal one, the warmer the weather conditions, the faster.

It is not difficult to determine the first signs of the disease - they will appear on the lower leaves of the potato, then the whole leaves with the tubery will be affected. On the leaves it is brown spots with a slight white bloom, dark spots appear on the tubers, which subsequently increase.

In some cases, the disease can not be cured simply because of the rapid spread of late blight. As prevention, you can use:

  • Tillage on the bed from the phytophthora and then mulching.
  • Observe crop rotation.
  • Planting solanaceous crops should be carried out separately.
  • Compliance with the required distance between the bushes of the plant. Too close planted potatoes are poorly ventilated, which creates optimal conditions for the fungus.
  • Spud potatoes. The more ground the stalk, the less chance of a disease.
  • Remove diseased plant bushes in time, and then burn.

Also disadvantages include:

  • Sensitivity to light. If the potato feels deficient, the tubers can simply become small.
  • The need for protection from insects. With a low pest population, you can use eco-friendly herbal preparations: an infusion of wormwood, walnut leaves, etc., but if this does not help, then it is better to use specialized drugs, such as Aktar, but in this case be sure to read the instructions and follow its instructions.

Variety potato Bellaroz - description and characteristics (with photo)

The variety of German selection is cultivated not so long ago, but it is already popular with farmers because of the opportunity to get a harvest in the early stages. Since 2006, entered into the State Register and recommended for the Central Black Earth region. It is grown on the territory of our country almost everywhere. The species is early maturing, young tubers are suitable for food in 45 days after germination, the period of full maturation is 60 days. This allows summer residents to quickly see the results of their work, and send the farmers early vegetables for sale and make a profit.

Bellarosa potato varieties are popular with farmers

Agrarians note the productivity of Bellarosa, a good storage capacity of root crops, which is unusual for most early varieties, and excellent taste.

Bush 75 cm tall with powerful shoots and large green leaves, slightly wavy at the edges. Blooms in purple flowers.

Root crops are oval-rounded, with a rough skin of a reddish hue. Tuber weight - 117–207 g (there may be giants up to 800 g). The flesh of root vegetables is light yellow, tasty. Contains a small amount of starch - 12.6–15.7%. Bellarosa potatoes make very tasty pancakes, stews, soups, but it is especially good boiled, crumbly.

Growing tips

For early harvest potatoes are germinated. 3 weeks before planting, it is placed in a thin layer in boxes and put on the light at + 15 ° C for pecking eyes. At the same time carry out culling damaged and diseased tubers.

High yields can be achieved only by following a number of rules.

  1. Potatoes should be planted at the site not earlier than mid-April: by this time, the earth should warm up well (up to +12 0 С). Planting time may vary depending on the growing region and weather conditions. With the threat of return frosts, early shoots are covered with foil.
  2. For seed material selected tubers of medium size, regular shape, without signs of disease, with a large number of eyes.
  3. It is possible to accelerate the emergence of sprouts by spraying with a solution of ash (400 g / 4 l, to insist day) in the second week of germination.
  4. Before planting, the tubers are disinfected in a solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour, then powdered with ashes — such preventive measures are necessary to prevent diseases.
  5. Planting potatoes, you should try not to damage the sprouts - this can lead to a slower pace of development of the plant.

Root crops are oval-round with reddish skin

  • Agrarians advise to observe crop rotation: do not plant root crops for 2–3 years in a row on one plot, as well as after decay. It is preferable to take away potato plots after growing oats, peas, onions, zucchini, cucumbers.
  • Bellarosa grows well on any soil, except heavy clay.
  • The depth of the planting holes should be 8–10 cm, the soil is heated, loose.
  • When planting it is necessary to take into account the size of future tubers, and they are quite large, so leave an interval of 40 cm between plants, 90 cm between rows. With more frequent planting, tubers are formed of medium size.

To get a large potato, plant it sparsely.

After the appearance of the first shoots, hilling of potatoes is carried out.

On a note. Bellarosa potatoes may not bloom, which is explained by the early terms of crop formation: the plant simply does not have time to bloom. However, this does not affect the yield. In extreme heat (above + 25 ° C), the bush can shed its flowers and buds.

How to increase yield

Farmers with experience in the cultivation of Bellaroza’s potato are advised to consider a number of factors contributing to higher yields.

When planting, 700 g of humus and 5 tablespoons of ash or 15 g of nitrophoska are introduced into the well. You can add onion husks to scare the wireworm.

Furrows recommend locating from north to south. In this case, the rows are uniformly illuminated first at sunrise, then at noon, and then from the west. The warming up of the ground at the bushes is uniform.

Potato fences are placed from north to south so that plants receive as much light and heat as possible.

Развиваться корни и формироваться картофельные клубни будут лишь при прогревании почвы до +7°С. С повышением температуры до +22°С они начинают расти более интенсивно. Однако в жару более +25°С или небольших заморозках рост клубней задерживается.

On the fertilized soil, the yield of the bush will be greater. Before the first hilling under the plant make 1 tsp of ammonium nitrate and 1.5 cups of humus. Very good feed infusion of mullein (1:10). During the budding period, the plant needs potassium - 100 g of ash or 10 g of potassium sulfate is enough. After ottsvetaniya to accelerate the growth of tubers make a bush under 2 tbsp. spoons of superphosphate and 200 g of mullein per 10 liters. Bellarosa especially needs magnesium, which has a great effect on tuberization. The lack of this element leads to a decrease in disease resistance. Magnesium sulphate is added to neutral and slightly acidic soils, and dolomite flour (50 g / m2) to acidic soils.

Potato beds and aisles can be mulched sawdust, hay. Mulch layer of 5-10 cm well retains heat and moisture, is an obstacle to the spread of weeds. As a mulching material, you can use black agrofibre, which cover the soil under the bushes.

When the stalks of the bush begin to fall and wither, the harvest comes to readiness. Two weeks before the roots are harvested, remove all tops from the site.

2 weeks before picking root vegetables, remove all tops.

Review of potato varieties - video

The main feature of Bellaroza is its high yield, so the advice to those who earn on potatoes - if you have not tried, plant and be happy with the harvest. There are people who praise this variety for taste, but no matter how much I tried it in fried and boiled form - the usual variety with a yellow middle. Perfect for chips, ordinary frying. When boiling potatoes do not fall apart, good for making mashed potatoes. Bellarosa has excellent yields - as a rule, all tubers are large, so for sale it is grade No. 1. I heard a lot of rumors that this is a genetic variety, etc., but I think it’s just rumors and nothing more, just a successfully bred variety. Phytophthora this variety is striking, therefore it is necessary to apply fungicides. The beetle also does not refuse it, it is necessary to process insecticides. One, many complain that Bellaroza is not very well preserved in winter and decays, but it's like someone. Otherwise, it is a good and proven grade.

A good variety, if properly planted, there will be large potatoes. I had 750 grams. There were bushes, under which there were up to 25-30 pieces. Starting from 200 to 650 grams, but these rarely came across mainly two bushes - one bucket of potatoes. As early too great. There is a lot of carotene in it and its beetle does not eat too much. To be large, plant less often, smaller - thicker, and will be different.

Mityai Bukhankin

I often buy this particular potato. The real taste of homemade potatoes, very satisfying! The skin is pale pink when the potatoes are young, peeled perfectly, very quickly. Scratch with a knife and ready. When the old, it is also easy to clean. This potato is round, sometimes slightly elongated. Mashed potatoes are delicious, non-watery, easily whipped. Now more. If you are going to plant potatoes, then choose this one. We have a small garden, there is a terrible land. But! This variety grows on any land, except heavy clay, does not get sick practically. Does not need abundant watering and tolerates heat and drought. He has enough natural rainfall, but he gives a great harvest. Early variety. It always looks beautiful, well kept, small eyes, easy to clean from the ground, almost always retains its appearance. When harvesting about 90% of good potatoes. Bellarosa mainly fell in love with Ukraine, Moldova and Russia. The variety does not require special care, before germination it is necessary to loosen the soil. They planted it many times, but even though we have most of the clay, and not the land, the harvest is still excellent. Therefore, the variety is excellent in all respects! Try it! And very tasty, many virtues. And it will be stored for a long time, without losing the view!

Bellaroza is a favorite variety of many summer residents and farmers, it is notable for its fast ripening and excellent taste, as well as undemanding to the quality and acidity of the soil, drought-resistant, and has good immunity to disease.

Characteristics and advantages of the variety Bellaroza

Virtually every feature is an advantage:

  1. All tubers are medium and large size. There are champions with a mass of more than a kilogram. Thanks to this, it is convenient to clean and cook.
  1. Due to the optimal starch content (12.6-15.7%), Bellarosa potato has outstanding taste and crumbiness after cooking.
  1. The variety is resistant to all known pathogens:
  • Rhizoctonia,
  • Potato cancer,
  • Blackleg,
  • All types of scab (except black),
  • Golden cyst nematode,
  • Vegetable viruses A and Y,
  • Glandular spotting.
  1. The rate of ripening is a record among potatoes - you can harvest in 2 months, and pick up the first potatoes in 45 days.
  2. Thanks to this for the year you can easily collect two crops. The first is at the beginning of July, and the second is at the beginning or middle of September. It is possible to use for the second landing the same place, as for the first.
  3. At one time you can collect 160-180 centners per hectare. Respectively, for the year with a two-time removal of the harvest, the figure rises to 320-360 centners / ha. When using high-quality fertilizers and vegetable growth stimulants, the crop weight per hectare easily passes the mark of 400 centners.

Bellarosa Flower Bud

  1. Undemanding to moisture. The variety grows well and produces a crop, content with precipitation. Due to the high drought tolerance of the potatoes do not need artificial irrigation, and therefore in the installation of drip irrigation system, which can be profitable to save.
  2. The variety "Bellarosa" gives the same yield on all types of plots. The exception is heavy clay soils, where the mass of harvested potatoes drops significantly. This quality in combination with the previous item makes it possible to grow in adverse conditions.
  3. A distinctive feature of the potato "Bellarosa" from other early ripening varieties is the ability for long-term storage. Usually, early varieties spoil quickly, but in this species during the storage period no more than 6% of tubers spoil.
  4. High resistance to disease and damage is caused by a low percentage of damage. Tuber rind is durable; therefore, up to 99% of root crops remain unharmed during harvesting and storage.

A good example of tuber size

  1. Due to its large size and resistance to damage, potatoes retain a pleasant presentation. Because of what quickly diverges from the shelves of grocery stores. And the duration of storage allows you to sell the product at 100% without rejection.

Sowing and further care of the variety

Potatoes "Bellarosa" preferably planted in the area after legumes, cabbage or cucumbers. These cultures oxidize the soil, reducing the risk of developing the disease. Landing dates are chosen based on the climatic conditions of the area.

Prepare the site in advance in the fall. To do this, carry out deep plowing of the earth and make the necessary fertilizers. At this stage, it is desirable to use rotted manure. Also, when applying fertilizers, the type and chemical composition of the soil is taken into account.

Before planting, the tubers are etched with disinfectants. And also treated with plant growth promoters. At this stage, you need to reject diseased or damaged potatoes.

Before planting, the potatoes are kept in the light, so that the root crops appear sprouts. To do this, 15-20 days before planting, the tubers need to be scattered evenly in a bright clean room. The optimum temperature is + 15 ° C, with warmer air the time of sprout appearance is reduced.

Packaged crop from Bellarosa variety

When planting, it is possible to adhere to a standard planting for potatoes of 60 * 35 cm. Since the Bellarosa variety has large tubers, it is necessary to increase the distance between rows to 70-75 cm as necessary, and the interval between potatoes to 40 cm. Depth regardless of the size of the tuber done on 8-10 cm.

Planting method is selected based on the climate of the region and soil characteristics. A more suitable method of planting, the method of earth crests or garden beds. After the surface of the ground level carefully, but carefully using a rake.

Care for potatoes "Bellarosa"

First of all, care is the standard for all cultivated plants need to keep the land clean and in time to weed the beds. The variety "Bellarosa" is deservedly called unpretentious and therefore a promising type of potato. But despite this, there are several specific requirements for the care of the variety:

  1. Potatoes after rain or artificial irrigation require shallow loosening of the surface layer of the soil to prevent the formation of a crust from it, which prevents the enrichment of the earth with oxygen.
  2. Despite the resistance of potatoes to diseases, in relation to pests, the variety Bellarosa cannot boast of such. The most dangerous of these is the Colorado potato beetle. With a small number of them must be fought with the help of manual collection. With a massive lesion to carry out chemical treatment of plants.
  3. During the growth and maturation of tubers, regardless of the presence of precipitation, 2-3 loosening is carried out. The first must be carried out a week after landing, the second - a week later. The third - immediately after the emergence of shoots.

Fertilizers for variety "Bellarosa"

A year before planting, in the fall it is better to fertilize the land with rotted manure or chicken droppings. Directly during planting a handful of a mixture of wood ash and soil is introduced into the wells. After planting, before harrowing, fertilizers are applied containing potassium and phosphorus.

Color of peel and tuber pulp

Since “Bellaroza” is a variety of early ripening, in order to fully grow tubers it is necessary to apply magnesium-containing fertilizers. This is especially important when sowing potatoes on sandy and sandy soils. To do this, you can use dolomite flour at the rate of 50 grams per square meter.

Also, fertilizers for vegetable crops with macro-and micronutrients are made with poor plant growth. For foliar application, it is desirable to use complex fertilizers taking into account the type and composition of the soil.

Why do plants not bloom?

Many gardeners are worried about the fact that "Bellarosa" does not bloom. After all, in potato this indicates the inability of the plant to bear fruit, the presence of any disease or nutrient deficiency in the soil. But in the case of the absence of flowers in “Bellaroza” you should not worry - the roots will ripen anyway.

The fact is that this variety has very early maturation. Most tubers ripen even before the bud is fixed to the flower. This speed allows you to get ahead of the seasonal spread of the main pest - the Colorado potato beetle. As a result, a situation arises when the roots have already ripened, and the flowers have not yet blossomed.

The complete lack of flowers is possible in too hot a climate. The flowering of the potato "Bellarosa" occurs at a temperature of 19-22oC. With too cool summer, the ovary of flowers does not begin, and with too hot weather plants throw off buds. Also, flowers can eat ladybugs or ground beetles.

Vegetable growers reviews

Reviews about the variety “Bellaroza, only positive. Many distinguish its resistance to disease, consistently high yield and unpretentiousness. Such qualities are especially important in the unfavorable northern regions of our country. Potato "Bellarosa" gained great popularity among gardeners, because it does not require watering, which means that it can be planted in large quantities.

Especially stands out the speed of ripening, thanks to which even on ordinary soils, you can shoot two harvests per year. At the same time, early ripening is combined with high resistance to long-term storage. For this quality and beautiful presentation, the brand has loved trading networks and wholesalers. All this makes the potato "Bellarosa" a promising direction of vegetable production.

Potato varieties Bellaroza: photo, description, specifications, reviews:

Many countries consider potatoes as the main vegetable. It is grown in household plots for the needs of the family and on an industrial scale in order to sell it to the population. 400 species of this vegetable are known in our country.

To get a good harvest, it is important not to make a mistake in choosing a variety that would taste good, resistant to bad weather, injuries and diseases.

Such requirements are met by potato varieties Bellaroza, which will be discussed in this article.

General information

The potato variety Bellarosa, reviews of which indicate that it is a high-yielding vegetable, is often used in industrial cultivation. For those who want to build their business on potatoes, this is exactly the sort that a novice farmer needs to start. But to obtain high yields, it is important to know as much information about the crop as possible.

Potato varieties Bellaroza bred German breeders more than 20 years ago. Many tests were carried out, as a result of which it was found that this variety has the highest yields, growing in temperate climates.

Thanks to three indicators, such as taste, commercial quality and undemanding to grow, potatoes have become an attractive crop for cultivation. In Russia, this vegetable appeared fifteen years ago, it has been registered in the state register of our country since 2006.

It is grown in the North-West, Volga-Vyatka, Central Black Earth and Ural regions. This is a dining variety.

Bellarosa Potatoes: variety description

The culture is distinguished by upright shoots, reaching a height of 70 cm. The large leaves along the edges have undulating outlines, they are juicy, with a dark green color. The flowers of the plant are small, have a red-purple hue, they are few. Before the onset of the harvest period, flowering may be weak or completely absent.

You should not worry, this is a normal phenomenon, which characterizes Bellarosa potato. Description of the variety, reviews of which are mostly positive, will not be complete if the tubers are not characterized.

Consumers of the root vegetable say the following: pleasant taste, easy to clean and store, does not boil soft, does not darken during cooking and gets a delicate, crumbly texture.

Fruit Description

Root crops - leveled, ovate-rounded with a reddish, light pink shade. There are large and medium sizes. Their weight is 200 grams, the maximum weight can reach one kilogram. In the nest is 8-10 tubers. For familiarization photos of the potato variety Bellaroza are presented in the article.

Culture has little eyes, they are small. The depth of their occurrence is slightly more than one millimeter. The skin looks thin and smooth, but when touched, a barely perceptible roughness is felt. The flesh is dryish, sometimes cream or yellow.

Bellarosa potato variety: characteristic

Reviews gardeners about this culture are good. The most remarkable thing is that they carry useful information. For example, to get large potatoes, planting tubers need to be planted at a great distance from each other - about 30 cm. Potatoes grow small, if it is planted thickly.

Characteristics of potato varieties Bellaroza attracts experienced gardeners and professional farmers with the following indicators:

  • Precocity. This variety has an early ripening period of two months. But new potatoes are dug even earlier - 40-45 days after planting seeds in the ground. When podkapyvanii tubers damage to the plants is not applied. In the south of Russia, the potato crop is harvested twice. This period falls on July and the end of September.
  • Crop stability. Potatoes always fruit well. With one hectare, you can collect 40 tons of vegetables.
  • Drought tolerance, characterized by a high rate. Thanks to this, Bellarozu can be grown on huge areas that are not equipped with a drip irrigation system.
  • For the growth of varieties suitable for any soil, with the exception of heavy loam.
  • Resistant to mechanical damage.

Rejected tubers make up only 1-2% of the total harvest.

The potato variety Bellarosa possesses good immunity against various diseases and lesions, such as late blight, blackleg, scab, potato cancer, etc.

Thanks to this indicator, the plantations of this vegetable look healthy for a very long time. The green part of the plant begins to fade when the tubers are fully ripe. Vegetable is stored without loss of quality, while maintaining the presentation.

Why does not bloom?

If a plant is affected by a disease, it becomes weak and stops blooming. But this does not apply to Bellaroze, since the variety is ultra-early. The crop ripens when the Colorado beetles and other pests have not yet appeared. The plant simply did not have time to bloom. The quality and quantity of tubers practically does not suffer from this.

Potato varieties Bellaroza drops flowers, if the environment has a higher temperature, that is, more than 22 ° C. The reason for the lack of buds on the plant can be an invasion of ground beetles or ladybirds, which they obel.

Planting material

If they are not germinated, they are planted when the soil warms up to eight degrees Celsius.

If planting material is small, you can use sliced tubers. On each half left one or two eyes. Place the cuts sprinkled with ash. For each tuber, the knife is disinfected with a solution of potassium permanganate. Before planting, the potatoes need to be dried well, otherwise it may begin to rot. In this case, a good harvest can not wait.

Description of landing

The potato variety Bellaroza, the photo and description of which is presented in the article, has been planted in the prepared soil since the end of April. To determine whether the tubers are ready for planting, you can by eyes. If sprouts look out of them, then such tubers are considered germinated.

When planting, it is advisable to consider the following recommendations:

  • Plant potatoes better in rows. To do this, the marking of the bed is first carried out, and the holes are packed at a distance of 40 cm from one another. The width of the aisle is usually 90 cm. The depth of the holes is 8-10 cm.
  • The type of soil and climate features in the region influence how the planting will be carried out: smooth on even beds or on ridges.
  • For each region, the planting time is determined individually, taking into account the characteristics of the variety and weather conditions.
  • When planting is completed, the soil is leveled from above with a rake.

Watering description

Care culture includes such a procedure as watering. Potatoes are plants that have enough natural moisture, their vegetable gets from rainfall. But when the tubers grow intensively, they need to be watered regularly, preventing the soil from drying out. Excessive watering is not allowed, otherwise the roots will begin to rot.

Bellarosa potatoes (description of the variety, photos, reviews, read and see the article) need loosening, which is the most important agrotechnical event for such a culture. Thanks to this procedure, the roots get oxygen and water.

In addition, loosening is a good way to control weeds. If this is not done, the plants harmful to the potato will not leave the tubers any nutrients. Loosening is done when the height of the plant is less than 15 cm.

Later, with the active growth of weeds, they are simply pulled out until they have formed seeds.

Hilling Description

Instead of loosening, plants spud when they grow up to a height of 15 centimeters. This procedure is performed in order to increase the throughput of the soil, that is, air and water flow to the roots in greater quantities. Hilling is done easily: the earth is raked up to the bush, forming an embankment. This should be done from two sides of the bush, otherwise it will slope on its side.

How to apply fertilizer?

All potatoes of early varieties need feeding. Is no exception and Bellarosa. It is necessary to use fertilizers containing magnesium. This is of great importance for sandy soils. Dolomite flour for such a soil is exactly what you need.

Plants need additional feeding during important periods of their growth:

  • When will the first shoots. Preparing a solution of bird droppings or manure with water. They watered plants at the root.
  • Before the flowering period. Urea or potassium sulfate is introduced into the soil.
  • During flowering. Feeding is carried out with a mixture of mullein with superphosphate.

Advise farmers

Experts and experienced growers believe that the yield can be increased if the following factors are taken into account:

  • Humus, ash, nitrophoska in appropriate quantities are added to the planting hole: 700 g, five spoons, 15 g.
  • The furrows should be located in the north-south direction. So the beds will be lit evenly throughout the daylight hours.
  • Between rows and beds it is better to mulch, which is used for hay or sawdust. A layer of mulch should be five to ten centimeters. Heat and moisture will linger well in the soil, and weeds will not spread.

Feedback from consumers and vegetable growers

The potato of Bellarosa, bred by German breeders, is characterized by all without exception positively. It is spoken of as a variety that produces stable yields, is resistant to long periods of drought, and is almost unaffected by various diseases.

Root crops are resistant to mechanical damage, so during harvest the tubers are 99% stored in good appearance and presentation.

Bellarosa potato is characterized as a vegetable crop with positive qualities that are increasingly attracting gardeners and consumers.

Advantages and disadvantages

The fact that the variety has become very popular over the last 10 years proves its superiority over other representatives of the nightshade. According to the description, with proper care, the yield of the variety is 35-37 tons per 1 ha of land. The price of such potatoes on the market is also high, thanks to its taste and pleasant appearance.

Early potato Bellarosa has several advantages:

  • High taste and moderate starch content makes this variety suitable for frying, boiling, mashed potatoes. In boiled form, the species cracks, but does not crumble and does not darken.
  • The peel of potatoes has a rough, dense in structure surface. This protects the tubers from damage during transport and extends their shelf life.
  • Resistance to drought makes the vegetable an excellent option for summer residents who can visit their gardens very rarely. Tubers are formed normally even with a strong drying of the earthy coma.
  • The bush does not need a strong hilling. It is enough to carry out the procedure 1-2 times. This saves time and effort.
  • Unpretentiousness to the composition of the soil also makes the variety very popular. Tubers grow equally well in all types of soil, except loam. It is too heavy for potatoes.
  • The variety has resistance to the pathogen of late blight, dry rot, black leg, rhizoctonia, spotting. Pretreatment of tubers from these diseases allows the gardener to save on pesticides.

Despite the fact that the variety Bellaroza possesses such a list of positive qualities, it also has drawbacks. The main disadvantage is exposure to pests. Shoots often eat Colorado beetles and their larvae. Tubers become a delicacy for cyst-forming golden nematodes and wireworms. Often potatoes spoil the bear.

Another negative side is that there are many varieties that look like Bellarroz. Their varietal characteristics do not meet expectations.

Planting potatoes

You can plant this variety in April

According to the characteristic, the variety Bellarosa requires early planting of the crop. This happens already in mid-April, when the soil warms to a depth of 10-12 cm. If the weather conditions leave much to be desired, the landing should be postponed a little.

Potatoes are grown in several ways. The most familiar option - planting tubers or their parts in the ground. Another less popular way is seed cultivation. For this, potato seeds are planted in seed boxes, in May seedlings are sent to a permanent growing place - in open ground.

For planting choose the best tubers, at the end of February it is laid out in a single layer in a warm, well-lit place. From time to time, the potatoes are sprinkled with water and turned over.

Planting potatoes

At the end of April, they start planting potatoes in the ground. When planted tubers between holes leave at least 40 cm. This is the optimal distance, allowing tubers to develop normally and in a wealth of nutrients. The seeding depth depends on the density of the soil, the average is 15-18 cm.

If the variety of Bellarosa is planted in trenches, the depth of seeding of tubers is reduced to 10-13 cm. The distance between the rows is 90 cm. Nitrophoska or any other phosphorus-containing fertilizer is poured at the bottom of the rows. This is important for early potatoes.

Pest Control

The plant is highly susceptible to pests, then you need to take care of its protection. Colorado beetles and their larvae eat leaves and shoots, and tubers damage nematodes and wireworms.

To carry out the treatment is recommended not in the period of ripening of tubers, but before planting. For this:

  • tubers laid out in a single layer on a canvas or oilcloth, it is necessary that the chemistry does not fall into the ground,
  • if the preparation requires dilution in water, the tubers are sprayed from a spray or soaked in chemical containers,
  • if the drug is used in dry form, it is mixed with ash and powdered tubers from all sides. It is more convenient to do this with a sieve over the oilcloth.

In addition to the spring treatment practice spraying shoots to fight the Colorado potato beetle. This should be done before flowering or after it. Sometimes rainy weather interferes with this: precipitation removes chemical from leaves.
