Heliopsis planting and care in the open field seed reproduction

Picking up flowers for a flower bed, I want to create an unusual design with the help of unpretentious plants. After all, very often there simply isn’t enough time to fiddle around with capricious plants.

And it is really useless, since there is a mass of not less decorative, but without requiring special attention colors.

One of these is the heliopsis, we offer a more detailed look at the variety "Lorain Sunshine", which will decorate any flower garden and will give its beauty and light aroma from July to the first frost.

Biological description

A small genus of herbaceous perennials, which belongs to the Astrov family. Initially, the plant grew in the eastern part of North America, but has long been popular almost in all parts of our planet.

For Léraine Sunshine heliopsis, erect stems are characteristic that reach a height of 70-80 cm. A distinctive feature and even the hallmark of the variety is its leaves, the leaf plate is painted white and decorated with green veins.

The motley and original shoots of this plant always cause enthusiastic views and attract attention, as well as its not less beautiful flowers, gathered in basket inflorescences. Petals are rather short, roundish, saturated yellow color. Named variety "Lorain Sunshine" in honor of the grower, who discovered an unusual herb in his flower bed.

Location and lighting

Considering that the plant has come to us from hot countries, the places for its planting must be sunny. Best of all, herbaceous perennial grows in open and even arid areas.

Growing from seed

In the spring, you can sow seeds in planting containers. At the bottom of the tank must be laid drainage. The substrate should be loose, you can add peat to the pots. It is recommended to pour the soil with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and then sow planting material.

After that, the container is covered with glass or film and left in a bright place with an air temperature not lower than 20 degrees. After 7 days, seedlings should be moved to a dark, cool place and stored for 3-4 weeks at a temperature of 3-4 degrees. After this time, the container is placed in the sun in a room where the thermometer shows at least +25. When the first shoots are shown, the shelter is removed. Grow seedlings continue at a temperature of 10-15 degrees.

In the process of changing the temperature and light conditions, the plants must be watered as the soil dries. When the weather is warm, the seedlings are planted in open ground. When the seed method of reproduction perennial blooms in the 2nd year.

In open ground In the open ground, the seeds are best sown before winter. This is done at the moment when the frosts are near, and there is no likelihood of warming again.

Through seedlings Seedlings are planted in open ground at the end of May. To do this, dig the planting holes at a distance of not less than 40 cm from each other and place the strengthened seedlings there.

Dividing bush

For this method of breeding suitable plants that have reached 4-5 years of age. The shrub is carefully dug out and its rhizome is divided into equal parts so that at least one kidney is present on each delenka. After that, immediately planted into the ground at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other. The procedure is recommended in spring or autumn, preferably not more than once every 4-5 years.

Watering and soil care

Perennial, does not need daily watering. Water procedures should be carried out only if the ground around the plant has dried out considerably.

Moreover, heliopsis can do without irrigation at all, but in this case it must be understood that the flowering will not be abundant and large-colored. The land around the shrub should be regularly loosened, weedy from weeds and mulch the soil.

Fertilizing a plant is not necessary at all, but if you want to pamper your pets, then mineral fertilizers and green complex top dressing are welcome. They contribute to more abundant flowering and add decorative and already charming leaves.

Protection against diseases and pests

Heliopsis "Lorain Sunshine" is highly resistant to diseases and pests, but do not forget that excessive moisture can cause fungal diseases. As a preventive measure, a solution of foundationol or copper sulphate is used. “Lorain Sunshine” is a heliopsis variety with a characteristic highlight in the form of stunningly decorative leaves and incredibly beautiful yellow-orange inflorescences that can fill a flower bed with a cheerful atmosphere and give a sunny mood even on cloudy days.

Varieties and types

The most famous species is sunflower heliopsis. This is a perennial view with branching stems up to a meter tall. The foliage on the shoot is small. Yellow flowers up to 9 cm in diameter are well suited for bouquets. Flowering begins closer to the middle of summer and lasts a couple of months.

There are several varieties of this type:

  • Asahi - has a lower (up to 75 cm) shoot with half double flowers.

  • Summer Knight - It has darker leaves and shoots of burgundy hue. The middle of the flowers is colored brown.

Heliopsis rough the entire shoot of this species, including foliage and stalks, is covered with a thorny pile. Stems reach 1 m 50 cm tall, leaves opposite, petiolate. Flowers up to 7 cm in diameter.

  • Popular variety Golden ball slightly below the base view (up to 1 m 20 cm), but has a more saturated color of the petals close to orange.

Heliopsis variegated leaves of this species are covered with spots and specks, which makes it twice as attractive.

  • Sort Lorain Sunshine - up to a meter tall, has a highly ornamental variegated foliage of white color with green veins.

  • Summer pink - on the leaves there are not only white, but also pink shades.

Heliopsis outdoor planting and care

Heliopsis is a completely unpretentious plant that even a beginner can take care of.

Planted these flowers need to dry, well-lit areas. The soil fits the usual garden, although in general, clay soils are preferred, but the main thing is that they have drainage, since the stagnation of water is harmful.

If you cover the plot with compost mulch, then fertilizer will not be needed. Although on poor sandy soils in spring it is desirable to add a complete mineral dressing, green fertilizer will also do (grass and weeds are poured with water and left to stand for a week - it is this water that will serve as fertilizer).

Excess fertilizer leads to an increase in green mass, so apply top dressing only if you have really poor soil or you do not want to mulch.

Watering is necessary only in hot weather. Heliopsy bushes need support - several bushes are tied and attached to one support. Faded buds should be removed.

Heliopsis is a winter-hardy plant and does not need shelter for the winter.

Gelenium is a representative of the Compositae family, and is also grown when planting and caring in the open field without much hassle, subject to several rules. All the necessary recommendations for growing and care can be found in this article.

Heliopsis seed growing

Reproduction of heliopsis is carried out in both generative and vegetative ways.

Seed propagation is easy. The material is simply sown in the soil before winter or in the middle of spring.

Sowing on seedlings is carried out at the end of winter. Drainage and turfy ground mixed with peat in the ratio of 1 to 1 are put in the pot. It is desirable to shed the substrate with potassium permanganate for disinfection. Seeds scatter on the surface and cover the container with a film.

For germination you need a good diffused lighting. As for the temperature, then within a month it should be 3-4 ° C - this is necessary for stratification. Next, raise the temperature to 25 ° C. When leaflets appear on sprouts, the film should be removed. With the formation of two true leaves dive carried out.

After that, the seedlings are kept at a temperature close to 14 ° C, and they are planted on a flower bed when the threat of frost passes. Do not forget to periodically ventilate before removing the glass or film. It is worth paying attention that they rarely resort to the seedling method, since heliopsis reproduces itself well by self-sowing.

Reproduction of heliopsis by dividing the bush

Vegetative reproduction is represented by the division of the bush. The procedure is carried out with plants that have reached five years of age.

They are dug and divided into parts so that each has at least a kidney. Cuts powder with ashes. Planting delenki, observe between them 35-40 cm.

Diseases and pests

Heliopsis is very resistant to diseases and pests. Some varieties are vulnerable to rust and powdery mildewwhich appear at high humidity.

To prevent this, it is necessary to prevent excessive watering, and also perform preventive treatment with Bordeaux mixture or foundation, because even though we can normalize watering, we will not protect our plants from wet weather.

Variegated heliopsis: features of planting and care

Among such plants - colorful heliopsis variegatedwho managed to win the trust of the general public due to the elegant appearance and lack of whimsicalness in choosing the habitat.

The flower belongs to the group of annual or perennial plants of the Astrov family, and North America is considered to be its birthplace. Today, flowerbeds from heliopsis often adorn urban parks and private homesteads in different countries of Europe and Asia, including in Russia. For home cultivation use several types of heliopsis, including rough heliopsis, sunflower heliopsis and others.

Short description

This forest handsome has upright, branched stems, which are characterized by increased strength and resistance to winds. Their height reaches from 70 centimeters to one and a half meters. If we consider the representatives of the rough species, then it is distinguished by the characteristic structure of the stems, from which the name went. Tiny rough bristles cover the entire flower.

The color of the leaves can be green, and dark and light. Some types of variegated heliopsis have mottled green veined leaves. They are located on short petioles oppositely. The leaves have an oval, pointed shape. At their edges there are small cloves.

In the process of growth and development, heliopsis forms inflorescences in the form of baskets, where, in turn, golden yellow or yellow-orange flowers are created. They can be simple, and single-row and double in diameter from 5 to 19 centimeters. The heliopsis bloom begins in June and lasts up to two and a half months. In place of the faded flowers, a seed box soon appears. Externally, heliopsis seeds resemble sunflower seeds.

Features of planting and care

This guide will effective for different varieties and varieties of plants, including:

  • heliopsis variegated,
  • heliopsis sunflower,
  • heliopsis is rough,

To care for the plant when planting in the garden is quite simple.

The main thing is to correctly determine the appropriate place, in which quality it is better to choose well-lit areas with an abundance of heat and light. When kept in shaded areas, flowering begins much later, and the stems remain very weak.

As for the soil composition, here the heliopsis does not have high requirements. The only thing to consider when choosing a substrate is that culture does not develop well in limestone soils. It is better to give preference to ordinary garden soil, where there is no stagnation of moisture. When grown in heavy, loamy soils, it is important to pre-equip a good drainage layer that will prevent moisture stagnation.

The drought-resistant flower copes with the rapid drying of the soil, so with a long absence of irrigation and rain, flowers and leaves begin to wilt. The irrigation procedure is carried out moderately. Intensive contact with water will be necessary during the flowering period. After doing the watering work, the soil should be carefully loosened.

You should also mulch the circle around the roots with good peat or other organic mulch.

Such measures will allow you to save yourself from the mandatory need to conduct additional feeding in the future.

If the soil composition cannot boast of high fertility, it is better to fertilize heliopsis with complex fertilizers, which are developed specifically for flowering plants. Fertilizing on the basis of nitrogen is ineffective, in addition, an overabundance of some substances can cause a quick set of green mass to the detriment of the development of flowers. As a result of this impact, the stems will become weighty and large, so they will have to be tied up.

At the end of flowering, faded elements can be cut, except in cases when you need to collect seeds. If not, it is better to remove the inflorescences, so that new ones begin to develop in their place, and the duration of flowering was maximum. In the autumn period should be cut and the stems. That's all, care for heliopsis sunflower or variegated can be considered successful.

Breeding features

The most beautiful representative of exotic flora can multiply in such ways:

  • seed,
  • by dividing the bush,

If you are going to sow seeds for seedlings, it is better to do this at the end of the first spring month.

If we are talking about planting in open ground, carry out the action in April and May. In general, the exact time of landing is determined by the climatic features of the region.

When growing seedlings, seedlings are best placed in a greenhouse or enclosed area. A ready-made soil composition based on sod land and peat is poured into the tank. Then, the moistening and spreading of seeds over the surface is carried out. It is not necessary to dig them into the soil - it is enough to gently press the planting material into the ground. At the same time the container is covered with a transparent film and placed in a warm place.

Periodically, the film is removed to realize the airing and watering of the soil. When the first shoots appear, the film can be removed, and cover the flower only for the night. Before the upcoming planting in open ground, seedlings are quenched, which consists of moving the pot outside for a few hours a day. If the threat of sub-zero temperatures is absent in the coming days, and the night-time temperature is kept at around +10 degrees Celsius, heliopsis can be planted in a permanent place.

As for seed planting, it is carried out in the fall. To successfully complete the task, it is sufficient to slightly bury the planting material in the soil, covering the crops with dry leaves. Such shelter is removed only in spring. There are cases that the whole plantation of a beautiful flower is spread throughout the territory by the method of self-seeding. If you notice that single flowering plants are scattered throughout the garden, dig them up with an earthy clod and move them to a permanent place. The flowering of young plants, planted seed, begins only in the second year.

If we are talking about reproduction by dividing the bush, then it can be started in early spring. For the successful implementation of the procedure, it is enough to dig up the roots and divide them into several parts so that at least two growth buds are present on each. Dead elements should be removed and healthy ones should be planted in a suitable substrate at a distance of 40 centimeters from each other. This decision will allow you to get a spectacular bloom in the first year of life.

Description of popular varieties and varieties

In the home floriculture, the most popular type of this plant is considered to be sunflower heliopsis. Such a perennial is distinguished by its bare, branched shoots, on the basis of which a bush up to 1 meter high is formed.

Rare leaves create the feeling of a semi transparent shrub. Flowers on tall stems can be cut and used to prepare colorful bouquet compositions.

The sizes of bright yellow baskets are different. Most often they are equal 8-9 centimeters in diameter. One stem can include 3-5 flowering buds. The flowering period falls en end of June and lasts up to three months, depending on weather conditions.

Through breeding work, several hybrid varieties were bred that differ in their unique shape and color. With their help, you can recreate in the garden in a particularly stylish and elegant composition:

  • Asahi. It is a 75-centimeter sunwood bushes that have semi-double flowers with an inconspicuous core resembling a large golden ball
  • Summernight. Received great popularity due to dark foliage and burgundy stems. In the core of the simple baskets there is a brown color,
  • Goldgrenhertz - In the high semi-terry stalks are the residence of terry lemon baskets. Their core is painted in greenish tones,

The main decorative value is a variegated heliopsis variegated Loraine Sunshine, which was considered earlier. The plant grows to 90 centimeters tall and densely covered with almost white foliage. Leaf plates retained only short green veins. The baskets of flowers are distinguished by bright yellow tones and special density.

How to grow Heliopsis experienced growers

As mentioned above, heliopsis multiplication is carried out either dividing the busheither seed in a way. The flower is characterized by an excellent tendency to tolerate severe frosts, therefore, in middle latitudes it is sown in the autumn, before the onset of frost.

In early spring, the first shoots make their way through the earth, and in the summer, beautiful flowering elements are created from them.

To successfully plant tiny seeds and get healthy seedlings from them, it’s enough to pick a fertile soil composition. You can fertilize it with compost or mineral supplements, including superphosphate. If the temperature on the street below 10 degrees Celsius, and the likelihood of night frost is still high, the seeds can be planted on seedlings. To stimulate the rapid development of new shoots, planting material is subjected to stratification in the refrigerator or other cold place. Already at the beginning of spring, seeds that went through such a procedure were planted in the soil, to a depth of 1 centimeter.

For planting it is better to use a light peat substrate. Experts recommend keeping a distance of 10-15 centimeters between crops. It is better to keep containers in warm, well-lit places until you see four real leaves from the ground. After their appearance, seedlings can be moved to individual containers and quenched at a temperature range of + 14 ... + 16 degrees Celsius. Already at the end of the spring period, ready-made seedlings are planted in a permanent place.

Choosing the method of dividing the bush, it is better to use 3-4-year-old bushes, which are dug out in the fall and divided into smaller ones. It is advisable to carefully feed the soil composition before the upcoming event, leaving at least 40 centimeters distance between each young shoots.

For breeding variegated varieties, it is better to use the cutting method. It is distinguished by the lack of special difficulties and good germination. In addition, this solution allows you to save varietal features of a particular species of heliopsis. Cutting cuttings is best done in the middle of summer, rooting them in a fertile substrate with a good drainage layer. The transplant is best implemented next spring.

Nowadays, heliopsis is actively used as luxury bouquet compositions. Its bright inflorescences are free standing in a vase for more than 10 days, delivering only good impressions to everyone around. The lush plant can be used for stylization of flower beds and stylish design of landscape design. One-color and multi-color varieties can be used for planting, creating on their basis luxurious compositions of unprecedented beauty.

To care for such a flower is very simple. The main thing to remember is that any spent efforts will be returned to you in tenfold form.

Description of Heliopsis

Heliopsis is a tall flower. It can reach a height of almost 150 m, a minimum of up to 70 cm. Its oblong-shaped leaflets are serrated along the edges, located oppositely or alternately on the stem (this depends on the type of plant). Heliopsis can be long-term or one-year. Such species are popular - Heliopsis rough and sunflower.

Heliopsis sunflower Heliopsis helianthoides

Sunflower Heliopsis blooms very densely. Its inflorescences are its decoration, the petals have a bright yellow shade, the flower itself is 8–9 cm in diameter. The structure of the flower directly depends on which sort of flower it belongs to. It can be simple, terry or semi-double inflorescence. Heliopsis pleases with long flowering.

Planting and maintenance in the open field

Heliopsis completely unpretentious. Even an inexperienced summer resident can take care of him. Planted flowers of Heliopsis should be mainly in dry areas, which receive a sufficient amount of light. Any soil will suit, although Heliopsis is well established on clay soils due to its powerful root system, which penetrates the soil to a great depth. The main condition is the presence of a drainage layer, since water cannot be stagnant.

If you sprinkle the area with mulch from the compost, then you will not have to fertilize the plant. But, if you land the Heliopsis on poor sandy soil, then with the arrival of spring it is highly desirable to produce a complete fertilizing with minerals. For these purposes, you can prepare your own green fertilizer (pour water over the grass and weeds and leave to infuse for 7 days. This solution will be fertilizer).

Excessive fertilization will only lead to the fact that the flower will increase only the green mass. Therefore, fertilizing should be done when there is really poor soil on the site, or if it is not possible to carry out mulching.
Watering should be done only in hot weather. For bushes Heliopsis need to prepare supports. Several bushes are picked up and tied to one support. Faded inflorescences should be immediately cut off.

Dividing bush

The bush is divided in spring. To do this, dig up the root, divide it into several roots, so that 1-2 growth buds remain on each root. Dried shoots are removed, and healthy shoots are planted in the ground, keeping a distance of 35-40 cm from each other. This method of reproduction will allow the plant to bloom in the year of planting.

When to plant

To determine the time of sowing Heliopsis, you need to know about the features of seed germination and the possibilities of vegetative propagation.

  1. Seeds can be sown for winter. This is done in October. Then Heliopsis will bloom next summer.
  2. Sow Heliopsis in the ground in late April - early May, but the plant will bloom in this case only next year.
  3. In February and March, sown on seedlings.

Heliopsis flowerbed

The solar flowers of Heliopsis will set the bright mood of a flower bed or garden, if properly positioned. Very often, these flowers are used in the design of the yard in a rustic style. To do this, heliopsis bushes are planted along wicker fences or walls, and they can also function as a hedge.

Those who like solid flower beds can plant a calendula, rudbeckia or a row next to this flower. If the plans contrast and multicolor, you can plant sage, veronica, liatris, asters, delphinium and other plants to Heliopsis.

Cut Heliopsis retains a fresh look for 10 days, so it is preferred to use it when making bouquets. Despite all the advantages and beauty of this plant, it is not very common among gardeners. Probably the reason lies in the fact that there are a lot of such “sunny” flowers, and not all growers choose Heliopsis.

Pest and disease protection

  1. The beautiful yellow flowers of Heliopsis and their leaves can be attacked by aphids. System insecticides will help get rid of it.
  2. Heliopsis is not prone to various types of diseases. Very rarely dark spots appear on its leaves. It is rust.
  3. If white-gray bloom was detected, then the plant was struck with powdery mildew.

In any of these cases, the sick shoots need to urgently cut and burn. To prevent the development of the disease and reduce the incidence of fungal infections, Heliopsis is treated with copper sulfate or Fundazole. The same treatment for preventive purposes can be carried out in the spring.

Description and general information about the plant

Heliopsis belongs to the grassy plant species from the Astrov family and can be both annual and perennial, depending on the variety.

Its stems reach 150 cm in height, and the leaves are alternately or oppositely arranged, and have an oblong shape with denticles at the edges. Planted in a flower bed, heliopsis grows rapidly, but its long stems sometimes need a garter, although even under strong gusts of wind, they do not break, but simply tend to the ground.

The plant blooms golden-yellow buds, reaching 8-10 cm in diameter. Depending on the variety, these "baskets" can be semi-double, double or smooth.

In areas with a temperate climate, the flowering period falls on the last days of June and lasts 70-75 days. And if the autumn is warm, the flowers will remain until the end of October, until the first frosts ruin them.

Varieties and varieties of heliopsis with photos

There are many varieties of heliopsis, the most common of which include the following types:

  • Sunflower. This plant can be recognized by bright yellow flowers, literally covering the bush. The structure of the inflorescence can be both terry and semi-double, and there are also common, smooth varieties. This culture blooms almost all summer.
  • Rough. As the name implies, the stems and leaves of this plant are covered with fibers, coarse and rough to the touch. Flowers are large, sunny yellow.
  • Lorain Sunshine. It is possible to distinguish this type of heliopsis from others by white-green leaves, densely covered with veins, and stems of a meter length. Flowers in this culture are simple and look like daisies with prominent orange centers and yellow petals.
  • Summer This is the brightest representative of heliopsis, its large flowers really resemble a sunflower, only a few smaller sizes. Inflorescences are densely and persists throughout the summer.
  • Asahi. This bush will be more compact, and the flowers - medium-sized, with bright petals.
  • Golden balls. Such a culture is a large sheaf of leaves, with densely arranged flowers in between. Inflorescences appear at the beginning of summer and retain their original appearance until mid-autumn.
  • Variegated. The bushes of a plant of this type are not the biggest, the stems are 90 cm long and covered with leaves with a huge amount of veins, because of which it appears almost white. Flowers are large and bright yellow.

Any of the listed types of heliopsis will not go unnoticed when landing on a flower bed and will look great both as an independent planting and in combination with other plants.

Plant propagation methods

Heliopsis propagates in two ways: by seed or by dividing a bush. In the first case, planting material is sown in the open ground in the fall, slightly buried in the soil, after which the future flowerbed is covered with dry foliage, which is removed with the onset of spring.

Young crops grown from seed bloom in the second year of life. In some cases, heliopsis breed independently, and then you should dig up shoots and plant them in the allotted place.

The division of the bush is done in spring. To do this, you need to dig up the root, divide it into several parts so that each of them has 1-2 growth buds. Dried parts are removed, and healthy plants are planted in beds at a distance of 35-40 cm from each other. With this method of reproduction, the heliopsis will begin to bloom in the very first year after planting.

Planting seeds for seedlings and the finer points of growing seedlings

Heliopsis can be grown through seedlings, i.e. by planting seeds

You can land the seeds of heliopsis seedlings. In this case, planting and caring for a culture will require some effort and a certain amount of time.

You need to do the following:

  • Fill the container with a mixture of peat and sod land and moisten the surface.
  • Spread planting material, slightly pressing into the ground.
  • Cover the container with a transparent film and place it in a windless room or greenhouse. Periodically cover will have to be removed in order to water the plantings and air them.
  • When shoots appear, the film will need to be removed, covering the seedlings only at night, if the day was cold.

2 weeks before disembarking, you will need to start hardening the seedlings, exposing it to fresh air for several hours a day.

Seedlings can be planted in the ground after the temperature becomes stable, and even at night it will be at least 12-14 degrees. Seedlings should be placed on the bed at a distance of 40 to 50 cm, and the row spacing should be 60-70 cm.

After planting, the plants will need to be watered abundantly for 10 days, until they are fully rooted.

Subtleties of planting heliopsis

When planting a heliopsis in a permanent habitat in the form of seeds and or seedlings, the following rules must be observed:

  • Choose dry and sunlit places.
  • Plant flowers in fertile and drained soil.
  • When planting seeds in open ground in the autumn, do not do it too early, so that they could not climb until spring. It is better to navigate according to the weather, in some localities it is permissible to carry out at the end of September, in other regions you have to wait until the beginning of November.
  • When planting seedlings it is important to observe the distance between the bushes of at least 35 cm so that the growing flowers do not interfere with each other. Since heliopsis is a tall crop, the distance between rows should be at least 50-55 cm.

Heliopsis grows well in well-lit areas and extremely dislikes stagnant water

If you properly care for plantings, you can grow healthy, beautiful and viable flowers that will please the eye throughout the summer.

Heliopsis care

One of the advantages of any kind of heliopsis is that they are extremely unpretentious and easily adapt to both hot and dry climates, as well as cold weather. However, with insufficient watering the flowers will be much less than with the regular introduction of moisture.

In addition, it is important to take care to protect the pleasure from drafts, while choosing open and sunlit areas for flower beds.

The roots of the plant need air, and to ensure its access, we will need to carry out weeding, trying not to damage the culture.

Once in 20-25 days it is necessary to feed heliopsis with mineral or organic fertilizers, as well as in time to prune wilted flowers and dried leaves. In the fall will need to cut the entire green part to ground level.

Heliopsis needs regular feeding

Since heliopsis is growing rapidly and can live for several decades, after a while it will occupy a significant area in a flower bed. In this case, you can cope with the problem by doing the root division and transplantation. Do it every 5-7 years.

Preparation of heliopsis for winter

As mentioned above, heliopsis unpretentious, hardy and resistant to severe frosts. For this reason, no special shelters for the winter plants are required.

Heliopsis do not need a winter shelter

To save the flower until next year, it is enough just to cut off the greens before the frosts, and we can assume that the perennial is ready to spend the winter.

Heliopsis in landscape design and in combination with other plants

Bright heliopsis flowers will help you to place the correct accents on a flowerbed or in the garden, if you correctly arrange them. Often these flowers are used in the design of the farmstead in a rustic style, and the bushes are placed against the background of wicker fences or wooden walls, and also planted as a hedge.

Those who prefer monochrome flower beds, you can track down next to this flower calendula, rudbeckia or a series. In the case when planned contrast and multicolor flower bed, you can use sage, Veronica, liatris, asters, delphinium and other plants.

In cutting, heliopsis retains its original appearance for 10 days, and sometimes more, due to which it is actively used in composing bouquets. However, despite all the advantages and beauty of this culture, it is not so common. Probably, the reason is that there are a lot of “sun-like” colors, and far from always flower growers opt for heliopsis.

Description of heliopsis

Flower Heliopsis has a strong stem with numerous shoots and bright yellow inflorescences with an orange middle. Baskets of inflorescences in diameter reach from 8 to 9 cm. They can be terry and semi-double - it depends on the variety. Leaves are rare, elongated, with cloves at the edges. The heliopsis bush in height can reach 1-1.5 m.

Plants begin to bloom in late June. If the weather was warm before, flowering may begin earlier. The average duration of flowering - 70-77 days.

Heliopsis: varieties and varieties

Rough heliopsis - the most common type of existing. Its stem, leaves and shoots are densely covered with stiff to the touch fibers. Shrubs of this variety are the highest (1.3 - 1.5 m). Leaves petiolate, located on the stalk opposite. Baskets inflorescences less than the rest of the species - 6-7 cm.

Sunflower heliopsis has more branched stems and rather large inflorescences - from 8 to 9 cm. Rare foliage. Unlike other species, it begins to bloom in July, and the average duration of budding is 2 months. This species has the following varieties:

  • Asahi (undersized bushes - from 70 to 75 cm, semi-double flowers),
  • Summer Knight (leaves, middles of inflorescences and shoots have a darker shade, flowers are not terry).

Heliopsis variegated lower than other species (up to 90 cm), and has an interesting color foliage.

Regardless of the variety, heliopsis is perennial resistant to frost and drought, and can be grown in a region with any climate.

Features cultivation of perennial culture

Growing heliopsis does not require much effort, so this plant is well suited for novice gardeners. Planting and care requirements are standard. The only thing that needs to be considered is that high varieties will need support, because the stem can not withstand the severity of the inflorescences. So that it does not break, the plants must be tied in one sheaf, and around to establish support.

Where and when to plant

Flowers Heliopsis recommended to plant in dry areas, where a lot of sunlight. In the shaded parts of the garden, they can also grow, but in this case there will be less flowers and the budding period will be reduced. The soil should be moist, fertile, previously fertilized with humus. Also, before planting, it should be borne in mind that heliopsis grows quickly, so it is better to plant it on a separate flower garden or in places where it will be easy to remove excess bushes, for example, along fences and paths. The recommended distance between the bushes is 45-50 cm.

Seeds for seedlings are planted in late February and early March. The first shoots should appear within 2-3 weeks. It is recommended to water the seedlings moderately, and from the middle of April to begin hardening - to put the plants in the fresh air, gradually increasing the time interval from 1 hour to a whole day. The best time for planting seedlings in open ground - the beginning of May.

The approximate depth of seeding is 2-3 cm. Furrows must be shallow so that plants have access to the sun. The first shoots in the open field appear after 3 or 4 weeks.

Secrets of care

To make plants feel comfortable, you need to take care of soil drainage. In order for the air to flow freely to the roots, it is recommended to weed plantings once a week and mulch the soil. Every month you need to make organic or mineral fertilizers. It is not necessary to get involved in top dressing - its excess may entail an increase in green mass to the detriment of flowers. It is not recommended to apply fertilizer in the first year, because the soil still stores a sufficient amount of nutrients on its own.
