Than before planting to process potatoes from the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm

The biggest problem in growing potatoes is the fight against the Colorado potato beetle. It is necessary to appear sprouts, and already the hordes of these voracious pests occupy the landings, eating young tender leaves. As practice shows, spraying the bushes does not always give the desired effect, so more and more gardeners prefer to process the tubers before planting. How to do it, what drugs to use, and how safe is this treatment?

Processing potatoes before planting from the Colorado potato beetle

Content step by step instructions:

Benefits of pre-treatment

In order to decide whether or not to process tubers before planting, first you should familiarize yourself with all the advantages that such treatment gives. First of all, modern preparations for dressing tubers protect potatoes not only from the Colorado potato beetle, but also many other pests. This significantly saves time and strength of the gardener, because he no longer needs to take separate measures against the wireworm or the bearfish, which damage the tubers in the ground. In addition, some drugs additionally have antifungal effect and stimulate the development of sprouts.

Pests on potatoes

Pre-treatment can reduce the number of sprays during the growing season. Shoots of pickled tubers do not attract the beetle for quite a long time, and the bushes have time to grow well and form a strong root system. When the pest nevertheless attacks potatoes, usually one spraying of the tops of the harvest is usually enough before harvesting. This not only facilitates the care of potatoes, but also reduces the concentration of chemicals in the soil and root crops.

Often, planting material is infected with various infections, which in the process of growing potatoes are transmitted to young tubers. If fungicides are used together with insecticides to treat maternal tubers, the spread of infections can be avoided. In addition, the soil also remains clean, which is very important for the subsequent cultivation of garden crops.

Not long ago, only one-component preparations were used for dressing root crops - insecticides, fungicides, growth stimulants. Because of this, the processing of potatoes before planting took more time, because not all preparations can be mixed. Now on sale there are new products containing both insecticides and fungicides.

Choosing the means for tuber dressing

Their advantages obvious:

  • long-term effect of the application - the validity period is 1-2 months,
  • a wide range of effects - plants are not affected by any fungi or insects,
  • ease of use - there is no need to mix the drugs, calculating the proportions, or perform treatment twice,
  • Reasonable price - buying funds separately, you pay more.

Simple insecticides have a selective effect, that is, they can suppress or destroy only a certain type of pest. Multicomponent insecticides, on the contrary, effectively affect several types of pests at once, thanks to the whole complex of active substances. They differ in compositions, have different activity and duration of action.

Different preparations for the processing of potatoes

Depending on the method of penetration of the active substance into the organism of the pest, insecticides are divided into the following types:

  • intestinal - get into the intestinal tract of insects with food and cause poisoning. Designed for gnawing pests,
  • contact - get on the body of the pest from the surface of a plant or tuber and cause intoxication. Designed more for caterpillars and insects of the sucking type, as well as the larvae of the Colorado potato beetle. Protect only those parts of the plants to which they are applied are easily washed off with sediments.
  • systemic - penetrate the plant and are distributed among the leaves, shoots and root system. Pests feed on poisoned fibers and die. When applied, these drugs are quickly absorbed by plants, so precipitation practically does not affect their effectiveness,
  • fumigants - get into the respiratory tract of insects, causing death. Effective against any pests, applied in gaseous form, by fumigation.

Seed selection

For the treatment of tubers, the most reliable are systemic agents of double and triple action.

Action drugs

How to process potatoes before planting from the Colorado potato beetles, many gardeners, summer residents, farmers are wondering. The market for insecticidal products is simply overflowed with various means, but before choosing the best, you need to understand a little about the effect of the poison.

Treatment of potato seeds from the Colorado potato beetles is carried out with preparations based on a modern insecticide with a broad spectrum of action - imidacloprid. The substance belongs to the third class of danger, with proper use does not harm the person environment. Imidacloprid acts on crawling, flying insects, harmless to earthworms. Deadly to bees, amphibians, fish.

The advantage over ground spraying is the lesser degree of danger to beneficial or harmless insects. The bee calmly pollinates the flowers during active flowering, does not risk dying, thereby providing good yields at the end of summer.

Means for processing potatoes before planting is finally absorbed by the vegetable for 2 hours. During the growing season is contained in the green parts of the potato, in the upper soil layer, where planting material was planted. Protective properties are preserved when treating seeds before planting for 50 days, whereas for ground spraying it lasts about 30 days.

Additionally, the composition of insecticidal concentrates from the Colorado potato beetles includes components that accelerate germination, contribute to the formation of tubers. Protect the culture from diseases, fungi, aphids, and other pests. Significantly increase the immunity of the plant, which leads to increased yields.

Chemicals Rules

There are standard rules that should be followed to get the desired result:

  1. Processing of potato tubers from the Colorado potato beetles is carried out not less than 2 hours before placing in the wells. During transportation, the treated seed is covered with a film. To work with the drug must be in rubber gloves, respirator.
  2. Any concentrate before use requires dilution with cold water. The specified amount of the concentrate is poured over 1 liter of water, thoroughly stirred for 10 minutes until completely dissolved. Add 4-9 liters of water, depending on the instructions. The finished solution is poured into a household spray bottle, a bottle with a spray.
  3. It is recommended to dilute the concentrate from the Colorado beetles just before spraying. In this case, the properties of the toxic preparation are maximized. However, manufacturers allow the use of ready-made solution for 3 days under the condition of storage in a dark place.
  4. Planting material is scattered on the film in a small layer. Spray evenly from all sides. Either dipped in a container of poison for a few seconds alternately. Put in the hole after complete drying.

The preparation for the treatment of potato tubers from the Colorado potato beetles is valid for 50 days, then eliminated. Spraying potatoes before planting is suitable if the harvest is planned in late August. You can not eat new potatoes in June-July due to the presence of toxic components in the tubers.

Effective means

Potato seed treatment is not a new procedure, with proven effectiveness. In the insecticidal market there are many means to guarantee reliable protection against the Colorado potato beetle and other pests. When choosing the right, you should pay attention to the following brands.

The active ingredient is imidacloprid. Additionally, penziruron is included in the preparation, which enhances germination, and also affects the cells of fungi, bacteria, preventing diseases. To prepare the solution, the concentrate is diluted in cold water in a ratio of 1:10. Spray tubers evenly. 10 liters is enough for processing 10 kg of potatoes. Packed concentrate in bottles of different capacities. Price 1 L Prestige from Colorado beetles 1700 rub.

When this tool went on sale, many people treated it with suspicion, caution. However, over time, the situation has changed, now it is calmly used to process potatoes from Colorado potato beetles. We have been doing this for 5 years now. Not to say that there are no Colorado beetles at all, but they are not so much to reduce yields. During the growing season we do not poison, periodically remove hands.

Modern remedy for the Colorado potato beetle based on Imidacloprid. It is produced in the form of a concentrated emulsion. Suitable for seed treatment of potatoes, plants during the growing season. It is economically spent, retains properties for about 50 days. To prepare the solution you need to dilute 1 ml of the concentrate in 1 liter of water, add another 4-9 liters of water after thorough mixing. The finished product is poured into a household spray. Plant potatoes should be in half an hour, no later than 2 hours. Packed in containers from 1 ml to 10 liters. The cost of an ampoule with 1 ml of concentrate is 15 rubles. A bottle of 10 ml sold for 95 rubles.

Last year we decided to process potatoes before planting. Bought inexpensive means Commodore. Worked in gloves, respirator, as it should. No side effects have arisen. Planted within two hours after spraying. In June, the Colorado potato beetles did not exist, the potatoes successfully faded. At the end of July she noticed pests, but their number was insignificant. My conclusion is that it is safer to process the seeds than the plant during the growth period.

Processing of potato tubers is carried out by spraying. The tool operates on the basis of imidacloprid. The feedback on effectiveness is mostly positive. Additionally protects the culture from diseases, invasions of aphids, moths, wrecking of the bear. Confidor economically consumed, retains properties up to 50 days. To prepare the solution, it is necessary to dissolve 1 ml of concentrate in 10 l of water, a higher concentration is allowed with dilution in 5 l of liquid. You can buy the drug in a specialized store, the economic departments of the supermarket, order via the Internet. Konfidor produces famous company Bayer. For 0.5 liters of the original insecticide will have to pay 6300 rubles. A bag of 1 g of money costs 27 rubles.

We process potatoes before planting, and not after germination, for 3 years already. Always use Confidor. The garden is clean. We collect a wonderful harvest. There are no moths, no bugs, no aphids, no larvae. Colorado beetles will appear from neighboring gardens, so baiting cannot be avoided, but it is better to do this before planting than during the growing season. Growing any varieties of potatoes in this case is much more convenient. Harvest in late August. We planted potatoes for consumption in June separately, where we are fighting pests with phytopreparations.

Which drug to choose to combat potato pests is an individual decision. But always requires to remember the rules of processing, the safety of their own and environment.

What is the pre-treatment of potatoes?

Processing of potato tubers before planting with insecticides protects the crop from leaf beetles throughout the growing season. The newest chemicals for seed dressing have several levels of protection: from pests and plant fungal diseases. Processing of potatoes before germination protects the culture from diseases characteristic of it in the process of development. Scientists have developed protective drugs that are completely removed from the plant body at the time of harvest.

Tuber Processing Rules

Insecticides are chemicals, so their use to protect the future harvest of vegetables from pests requires certain safety measures. Instructions for processing tubers before planting:

  1. Wear personal protective equipment: rubber gloves, respirator.
  2. Lay out the seed material on the surface in one layer (it is better to use a tarpaulin for this, which, after dressing the tubers, should be thoroughly washed with running water).
  3. Prepare the drug solution strictly according to the instructions. It is advisable to apply it immediately (no later than 5 hours after preparation, otherwise the drug is inactivated).
  4. Spray the chemical on the tubers with a spray or a broom.
  5. Let the solution dry.
  6. Turn the tubers to the other side. If they have sprouts, do it carefully, so as not to damage the shoots.
  7. Apply the product and let it dry. After that, immediately proceed to landing.
  8. To plant the tubers in gloves to avoid getting toxic substances on the skin.
  9. After planting seed, wash hands and face with soap and water.

Benefits of pretreatment

Recently, preplant processing of potatoes helps to get rid of the striped beetle for a long time. Pickled tubers scare away the beetle for a long time. During this period, the potato bush has time to get stronger and form the root system. And when the pest still attacks, it will be enough to sprinkle the tops once a new crop. This method facilitates the work of gardeners.

Planting material often have to purchase. However, it can be infected with various infections, which during the cultivation period can be easily transmitted to young tubers. To avoid this, it is necessary to treat potatoes with insecticides, and then fungicides. This is the only way to prevent the fruits of potatoes from being infected.

However, it is necessary to spend a lot of time on the treatment of tubers first with one and then with other preparations. In the stores there were funds that contain insecticides and fungicides at the same time.

Drug benefits:

  • Acts on the pest of one to two months.
  • Exposure is wide: no fungal infection.
  • Easy to use. No need to mix according to proportions.
  • Affordable price.

You can process potatoes with different preparations.. Insecticides are divided into several types:

  • Intestinal. Designed for rodents. Get into the intestines of insects with food. Cause poisoning.
  • Contact. Get on the body of the pest from the plant. This causes intoxication. They are more suitable for caterpillars and larvae of the Colorado potato beetle. Easily washed off with water, precipitation.
  • System. Get into the plant and spread through the leaves, roots. Pests begin to feed on the poisoned plant and die.
  • Fumigants. They must get into the respiratory tract to harm insects. They fumigated.

Varieties of insecticidal drugs

Seed potatoes are sorted before planting. Seeds with signs of disease must be removed. Selected fruits are heated in the sun at a temperature of 18-20 degrees. After processing, you can pickle the tubers.

Currently, many different drugsthat can process the seeds. Prestige is considered the most popular. The drug has been known on the market for a long time. Prestige has many advantages:

  • Processing should be carried out immediately before boarding.
  • The solution is prepared very simply. You need to follow the instructions.
  • Use Prestige several times will not have to. It saves money.
  • The tool is effective not only from the Colorado potato beetle, but also from many soil pests.
  • Treated tubers tolerate heat and high humidity well.
  • Tubers remain safe for human health. Prestige has the property of complete decomposition.
  • The drug has a low level of toxicity. Plants that grow near it are not amenable to chemical influence.

Since Prestige can have effects on various diseases, the duration of such effects is also different.

  • Protection from the Colorado potato beetle is 37 days.
  • From scab and wireworm keeps throughout growth.
  • From aphids can protect more than thirty-nine days from the moment the shoots appear.

There are other drugs. The most common are Kruiser, Celeste Top, Taboo, Matador Grand. Before using any of the products, you should carefully study the recommendations for use.

Processing rules

When using disinfectants, there are a few important rules to remember:

  1. Compliance with safety regulations. Insecticides are considered poisonous, because you need to handle in special clothes. The treatment site must be out of the reach of animals.
  2. Follow the indicated dosages. Otherwise, you can get a bad effect.
  3. It is necessary to properly prepare the fruits of potatoes for processing.
  4. Etching is recommended late and mid-season varieties. This is due to the fact that the period of decomposition of insecticides is long.

Etching steps

  • The selected drug must be diluted in water. It is necessary to plant a treater. He does not have to stay, he will need to spend immediately.
  • The resulting solution is poured into the sprayer. You can water the seeds not completely, but only on 2/3 of the surface of the tuber. Turning potatoes is not necessary. But if you want to process all planting material, then you need to turn the tubers with gloves and carefully, so as not to damage the shoots.

But it so happens that the sprayer may not be. In this case, you should resort to the method of lowering the tubers in the solution. Potatoes need to sprinkle in small doses. Approximately 10 kilograms per grid. Then you should pour the induced drug into the container. Gradually lower the tubers. Then they need to scatter a thin layerto dry out. Now you can safely plant potatoes on the site.

Ways to fight the beetle

There are different ways to deal with the beetle. The most time consuming is the manual processing method. But it is suitable for small areas. You will need to carefully inspect each bush. Remove the beetles that appear larvae. Remove leaves with laid eggs. All the collected "crop" should be lowered into a bucket of kerosene and lit. Can be poured on a hard surface and crushed.

From the voracious beetle can help folk remedies. All potato bushes will need to sprinkle with wood ash. It kills both adult beetles and their larvae. But ash can help with a small amount of pest.. Sprinkle need early in the morning either after the rain. It is necessary to carry out the procedure every two weeks before the flowering period. You can repeat the procedure after flowering once.

You can destroy the beetle and spraying. This will require infusions:

  • Onion husks, birch bark, poplar leaves insist ten to twelve days without boiling.
  • Tincture of mustard with vinegar is well suited to combat striped pest. To do this, take ten liters of water and add 100 grams of vinegar and 250 grams of mustard powder. Spraying should be done in the evening in dry weather.
  • Preventive method of processing potatoes. It includes planting plants between the bushes of potatoes. Planted vegetation should have a peculiar smell that beetles do not like. This is tansy, violet night, calendula, onions, garlic.

It happens that the larvae appeared on the bushes of potatoes. You need to get rid of them as soon as possible, otherwise they will eat the young bushes. There is a wide range of drugs against the harmful beetle. For example, Sonnet. They are treated once and that is enough. It is considered economical, because one ampoule is enough for a bucket of water. The resulting solution is enough for one hundred.

Use only one drug. constantly gardeners are not recommended. Beetle adapts to drugs. Therefore, choosing a tool, be sure to examine the composition of the drug. This will help get a good harvest.

Potato pest management before planting

The desire of the gardener - obtaining consistently high yields of potatoes. The first step on this path is preplanting potato tubers. Its advantages:

  • increases the yield and quality of potatoes
  • provides long-term plant protection against pests and fungal diseases,
  • reduces the need for frequent spraying
  • promotes better storage of the harvested crop.

To avoid the appearance of the Colorado potato beetles, it is necessary to master the basic techniques of preplanting tubers.

To perform this procedure, a tarpaulin or cellophane film is laid out on the ground, potatoes are spread in one row and evenly sprayed from the sprayer with a solution of an insecticidal preparation. Then turn the tubers and re-spraying. You can use a broom or brush. Care must be taken when turning the potatoes to preserve the integrity of the appearing processes.

After the tubers have dried, they are planted in the ground.

Planting material is carefully placed in the mesh and immersed in the prepared solution for several hours. The processing time is indicated in the formulation of the applied means. Subsequently, the roots are removed from the solution, dried and planted in the ground.

Such a "bathing" allows you to protect the plant from the Colorado beetles and other pests. Additional tuber feed will provide better germination.

Pollination bulk agent

Spread potatoes in one row sprinkled with dry powdered product. Root crop should be completely covered with pollinating substance. For these purposes, sifted wood ash is used, for example, birch.

Pollination is carried out immediately before planting. Make sure that the powder does not crumble. Powder ash can be carried out after the soaking procedure, or add ash in the wells.

Protection from the Colorado potato beetle

The Colorado potato beetle is one of the most dangerous pests of potatoes. He is able to cause great damage to the future harvest. The most effective way to combat - the use of chemical and biochemical drugs.

For preplant treatment of tubers from the Colorado potato beetle, insecticofungic acid treatment is used. Prestige.

For spraying planting material, a solution is prepared at the rate of 10 ml of the preparation per 100–200 ml of water (the required concentration is always indicated in the attached instruction). This amount is treated with 10 kg of tubers. Imidacloprid contained in Prestige, gradually absorbed by the roots, as the tops grow, it moves along the stems into the leaves, protecting the plant from overwintered beetles. Pests, perching on a bush, immediately die and do not have time to lay eggs and damage the leaves. The new tubers toxic substance does not fall. And after 1.5–2 months, it completely disintegrates into simple, completely harmless particles and loses toxicity. Experts recommend using Prestige for mid-season and late varieties.potato And for the treatment of varieties of early ripening are suitable preparations Cruiser and Taboo.

The poisonous substance in the Prestige decomposes and does not get into the new tubers

An effective means of protecting potatoes from the Colorado beetles - Prestige Chameleon. This complex drug is also used to spray tubers before planting. To do this, 10 g of the drug is dissolved in 600–800 ml of water and 25–30 kilograms of potatoes are sprayed.

Wire guard protection

When digging the plot gardeners come across worm-like larvae of yellow or brown. Appearance they resemble a piece of wire. Hence the name - the wire. This is the offspring of a click beetle. Almost all garden crops are damaged by this pest. They dig into the stems, roots and roots of plants, which leads to a significant decrease in yield. The wireworm easily moves in the soil, causing damage to potato tubers, forming passages in them.

The wireworm is dangerous not only for potatoes, but also for other vegetables in the garden

Tuber treatment methods for wireworm control are similar to the methods described above. For spraying or soaking the planting material use insect fungicidal disinfectants. It is permissible to spray directly in the wells. In addition to the Prestige preparation, tubers are treated by means of the Cruiser. For processing 100 kg of potatoes, 1 liter of solution prepared from 20 ml of the preparation per 1 l of water is sufficient. The following drugs are also recommended: Taboo, Picus, Commander, Imidor.

It is allowed to use the drug for long-term exposure - Basudin. It is introduced into the wells when planting potatoes. One package (30g) of the drug is sufficient for use per 20 m 2 of landing area.

Protection from the bear

Medvedka is a brown insect, most commonly found in well-fertilized places. If you do not fight it, it spreads throughout the site. During the day, the insect can destroy up to 15 potato bushes.

Medvedka is an extremely dangerous pest.

To protect the potato garden from the bear use preseeding soaking in preparations: Prestige, Cruiser, Gaucho. The processing time lasts up to two hours.

To fight with Medvedka they prepare a special bait and put it in the holes next to the tubers. It is enough to take steamed grains of wheat, corn or sunflower seeds, add vegetable oil (20–30 grams per 1 kg of grains) and mix with toxic chemicals. For this purpose suitable Bankol. Medvedka dies in a period of one to three days. And the drug itself is low toxic and does not accumulate in the soil and plants.

There are ready-made bait produced by the industry: Medvetoks, Thunder, Grizzly, Fenaksin plus.

Overview of fixed assets for pre-treatment of potatoes against pests

For these purposes, Prestige is most often used. He earned popularity for its effectiveness in protecting plants from pests, scab, fungal diseases. It is not recommended to use it when planting potato varieties of early ripening.

Good results are achieved with the help of tabourer. For spraying 100 kg of potatoes you need to dissolve 8 ml of the drug in one liter of water. You can handle tubers laid out in holes. The consumption rate in this case is 4 ml per 10 liters of water. This amount is enough to handle 1 weave. It protects against the Colorado potato beetle for a period of up to 1 month from the moment of emergence of shoots, and from wireworm - for the entire period.

The systemic fungicide Matador Grand protects tubers from the Colorado potato beetle, wireworm, whitefly, aphids and the appearance of various diseases.

Terradoks a means to get rid of soil pests: bears, weevil, soil flies, false wireworm and others. It is notable for non-toxicity to plants, long-lasting protection, and a fast impact rate

In addition to the means mentioned, the following drugs should be mentioned:

  • the insecticide Force helps to destroy wireworms before they damage potato tubers,
  • the two-component drug Volia Fleksi protects the potato from the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm,
  • Imidor, Agrovital, Imidalite, Nuprid 600 showed good results when used to combat potato pests.

Treatment with biological products guarantees the protection of plants from pests and does not cause harm to humans.

Preseeding treatment - a barrier to pests

In the spring, when the soil thaws, the pests that hibernate in it wake up. They are actively looking for a power source. Insects living in the soil are content with the hard roots of perennial grasses - nettle, burdock, dandelion, wheatgrass. After all, more delicious young plants yet. But with the arrival of the gardeners to the plots begins the real feast. We ourselves bring food to the pests: we sow root crops, plant seedlings. But the first to hit comes the potato, because by the time it was planted, the plants from the seeds had not yet grown, and it was too early to plant the seedlings.

The wireman sneaks to the place of power

As soon as the tubers are in the ground, soil pests are transferred to them. They feed on juicy shoots and sweet young roots, bite into the potatoes. Fortunately, each seed potato has several shoots. From 5–6, 2–3 will remain intact, they will germinate and give us a harvest. Insects, meanwhile, remain in the field and continue to eat stolons and young nodules. The bush loses strength, does not give the expected yield. We would have received much more if we had not shared with the pests. Preplanting preparation makes the potatoes unattractive, tasteless and even poisonous for wireworms, bear cubs and Colorado beetles starved for the winter.

What to process potatoes before planting from the wireworm

Wireworms are the larvae of a large black or brown colored beetle beetle. The length of the body can reach 6 cm. Although they write that this pest leads a secretive way of life, meeting it is not uncommon in the infected area. One has only to start working with the land: to loosen, make holes, as this insect will surely jump out of its destroyed mink and will efficiently run to build a new one. The beetle deftly and quickly moves, and being on its back, makes a roll and turns over, emitting a click. For this ability click and got its name.

One type of beetle beetle. In total there are more than 10,000.

Females leave wintering at the end of April, laying eggs under the lumps of earth. Yellow small larvae appear from the eggs, they live in the ground and grow 2–5 years old (depending on the species). They feed on the roots of wild herbs, tubers and root crops. In the potato larvae make numerous moves. Such tubers are easier to throw than clean. Adult wireworms up to 4.5 cm long with a rigid body are ready to turn into beetles. At the end of the summer they climb to a depth of 15 cm, make a crib and pupate.

Preventing the wireworm with harmless means:

  • onion peel - handful in each well during planting,
  • dry mustard - powder the soil with it in the hole, you can add hot pepper,
  • siderats - sow mustard or lupine seeds between the rows, around the perimeter of the field or between the holes, mow during the flowering period and lay as mulch,
  • ash, dolomite flour, lime-fluff - all this is alkali, and the wireworms love sour soil, scatter means before digging or add to the well in a tablespoon and mix with the ground,
  • potassium permanganate - 5 g per 10 l of water, pour 0.5 l of solution into each well,
  • birch tar - dilute 1 tbsp. l in 1 liter of water, dip each tuber, before planting, shed holes, but with less concentrated solution - 1 tbsp. l on the watering can.

Table: Chemicals

Do not use two or more drugs at the same time. Different substances can react, form solid or gaseous compounds and neutralize each other. From the proposed means, choose one that is acceptable to you and your potato variety. It is important to know that chemical preparations are not suitable for the treatment of early varieties, since they are stored for an average of 1.5–2 months in the soil and plants. The instructions for each insecticide indicate the waiting time, compare them with the maturity of their potatoes.

Video: other drugs and the need for re-processing

There are several ways of presowing treatment of potato seeds:

  • Spread the tubers in one layer on a tarp or film, spray, turn over with the other side and spray again,
  • put the seeds in one layer in a bucket or bunker, spray, put the next layer, spray, and so on until it is completely filled,
  • Spread the seed potatoes in the wells or in the furrows and process the tubers and the ground around them.

If the processing is done not in the field, but at home or in the garage, then you should transport the seeds to the landing site in plastic bags.

Description of the bear and pre-plant protection

A large burrowing insect up to 8 cm in length with a dark brown back and olive belly lives in the ground, but can swim, jump, fly, and shouts and tweets at night, the cricket or grasshopper sings more than loud. The pest has powerful jaws and front paws, which allow to build tunnels and oval chambers (nests) under the ground. On the neck there is a shell, in which the head is partially hidden, the abdomen ends with two filiform appendages. On the head are well distinguishable eyes, there are antenna whiskers.

Amateur naturalists trap the bearheads and keep them together with the larvae in the insectarium, watching their development. For some, breeding bears is a business because there is a belief that these insects help to cure tuberculosis and cancer.

Medvedka lives under the ground, but can fly at an altitude of up to 5 meters

In the summer, the female lays eggs, from which small little bears appear. At first they look like grasshoppers. In the southern regions, young offspring become sexually mature in the same year, and, for example, in the Leningrad region the full development cycle lasts 2–2.5 years. Pests are omnivores, feed on everything that comes their way during the construction of holes: beetles, worms, plant roots, they love to feast on root crops and young potatoes.

Natural means of prevention during planting:

  • iodine - 15 drops in a bucket of water, spill the wells before planting,
  • fish - throw a piece of fish into the hole along with a tuber, it will soon begin to decompose and scare the bear away,
  • needles - handful per well,
  • ash - half a glass in the hole.

Video: plot, inhabited by Medvedka, mechanical pest control

Methods of pre-fight with Medvedka chemicals:

  1. Process tubers, as well as against the wireworm, with Prestige or Cruiser solutions.
  2. Soak for 1-2 hours in solutions of Mospalin SK or Gaucho SK (1 teaspoon per 1 liter of water).
  3. Prepare poisonous bait and spread out in the grooves or holes. Cook porridge from two glasses of cereals (buckwheat, barley or millet). Add 2 tbsp. l unrefined sunflower oil. Add an insecticide without a strong odor of the type: Aktara, Mospilan, Regent, Konfidor. The dosage of poison is the same as in the instructions for 10 liters of water. Porridge of two glasses of cereal should be enough for 2 weave.

According to reviews of gardeners, ready-made granules and powders from the store are not very attractive to a bear, and therefore are not effective.

Today, residents of all regions of the Russian Federation, including Siberia and the Primorsky Territory, are fighting with the pest.

Colorado potato beetle - a guest from hot Mexico, adapted to the harsh climate of Russia

Colorado beetle in size and shape resembles a ladybird, and the larvae of these insects are similar, the difference is only in color. On the back of the beetle there are 10 bands: 5 black and 5 yellow or orange. The larvae have a black head and a number of black spots on the sides. Pests overwinter in the ground at a depth of 20 cm, come out in the spring, begin to feed on young shoots and multiply. Over the season, depending on the region can grow from one to three generations. Just born individuals feed on the pulp on the back of the leaves, and adults eat all the tops, leaving only the veins.

Birch tar (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water), as well as Taboo and Prestige preparations will be suitable from the above mentioned means for preplanting tubers against the Colorado potato beetle.

  • Actofit (4 ml per 1 l of water) - moisten the tubers before planting. The drug belongs to the class of biological.
  • Aktara (4 g per 30 liters of water) - pour the wells, consumption of 5-7 hectare.
