Peperomia care home transplant and reproduction

The interest of gardeners to peperomia is due to the diversity of its species. Depending on the variety, it is a semi-shrub, shrub, ampelnoe culture. Flowering is modest, but this is offset by beautiful leathery foliage. It is difficult to find a more versatile plant than peperomia. Home care is extremely simple, it fits perfectly into floral arrangements and looks decent as a detached plant.

Appearance and features

Evergreen herbaceous perennial from the pepper family. The habitat is India and the tropics of South America. Ampelnye species in nature epiphytes - grow on trees. Shrubs and creeping prefer places with thick mossy litter. For all species, thick, fleshy stems with leaves tightly seated are characteristic.

Root system tuberiform or creeping. Succulent leaves, lack of stipules, fleshy, store water in case of drought. The shape of the leaves is very different - heart-shaped, round, lanceolate. The texture is smooth, velvety, wrinkled. In color - dark green, olive, brownish, silver-striped, variegated.

Modest flowering - small bright flowers without a perianth gather in dense inflorescences in the form of an ear or cob. Each individual flower is placed in a tiny bract. Blooms year-round. Peduncles are usually pruned - they are devoid of decoration and deplete the plant.

Common varieties

In nature, there are about 1000 species of plants. About 300 varieties are adapted for cultivation in an apartment. The most common are the following.

  • Peperomiya wrinkled. Differs from other varieties in beautiful flowering. It is a compact bush no more than 15 cm. Flowering begins in summer.
  • Peperomiya round-leaved. Plant of ampelous type with small bright green rounded leaves. Leaf diameter - 1 cm. Shoots are long - up to a meter or more.
  • Pepperomia magnolia. It is characterized by glossy leathery foliage. Thick stems are erect, up to 25 cm high. Leaves are round-oval, up to 5 cm in size. Small greenish flowers form inflorescences resembling plantain panicles.
  • Creeping perperomy A variety of ampelous type with rarely located small rounded leaves. The color of leaves is motley, interspersed with bronze and silver color.
  • Peperomia is thick-leaved. A bush up to 40 cm high. Shoots are thick, covered with intensive green round leaves with a wax raid. Their size is up to 8 cm in diameter. During flowering releases spike inflorescence.
  • Peperomiya silver. The variety is popular for its interesting coloring. The leaves of the thyroid form with long purple-pink petioles are covered with silver and green stripes. Peduncles up to 15 cm, similar to plantain panicles.
  • Peperomiya kuszylistnaya. The plant is large, the stems are thick, ascending. The leaves are egg-shaped, dense, dull, saturated green color with a reddish tint and purple border.

Features agrotehnika

It is considered unpretentious flower. To preserve the decorative recommend to adhere to a number of rules. All types of peperomia contain under the same conditions.

  • Lighting and location. The best option is the west or east side. Do not allow the sun. On the south side pritenyut tulle or put at a distance from the window. Species with dark leaves grow well in partial shade. Variegated varieties prefer bright but diffused lighting. For them create a backlight fluorescent lights. Care for peperomia variegated varieties in this respect more difficult.
  • Temperature. The period of rest is absent. Special temperature conditions are not required. The plant year-round contain at room temperature 18-22 ° C. Does not like cold and drafts. In winter, they clean the window from the window or place a sheet of foam under the pot. On the street or a balcony can not stand even in warm weather.
  • Watering. In spring and summer, peperomia needs abundant watering. In autumn and winter, the frequency of watering is reduced. Water as the soil dries, maintaining a stable humidity, but without over-wetting. Tap water defend within two days. If possible, use soft water.
  • Humidity. It quietly carries dry air of apartments, but gratefully responds to periodic spraying.
  • Feeding. Fertilize year round. Use any complex preparations for deciduous plants. The concentration is reduced by 2 times. In the warm season, the frequency of fertilizing - every two weeks, in the cold - every month.
  • The soil. The optimal soil for peripremia is loose, light, well permeable to water. On 2 parts of leafy land take 1 part of peat, humus and sand. The addition of soaked hydrogel granules is welcome.
  • Transfer. The first three years are spent every April. As they grow older, the frequency of transplants is reduced. Adult peperomia is enough to replant every 2-3 years. A drainage layer up to 5 cm thick is poured into the new pot.

Breeding options

Peperomia is reproduced in three ways - by dividing an adult plant, by cuttings and leaves. Each method has its own characteristics.

  1. By division. Parts of the plant are separated during the next transplant. They are planted in the same soil as mature plants. Put in warm, providing moderate watering.
  2. Cuttings. They are cut in the warm season. Cut off the top of the stem with 1-3 nodes. Slice dipped in the solution "Kornevina" and immediately planted. For quick rooting, the pot is covered with a glass cap or plastic bag. Greenhouse systematically airing. The recommended rooting temperature is 23-25 ° C. Roots appear after three weeks. Sometimes cuttings are rooted in water. The roots will appear faster, but the plant will adapt longer after transplanting to the soil substrate.
  3. Leaves. The method is similar to propagation by cuttings. A leaf with a petiole is planted in a wet light substrate and covered with glass or film.

Pests and cultivation difficulties

Like any other plant, perperomy may be affected and affected by pests. Most often growers face the following problems:

  • Spider mite A barely perceptible web appears on the stems. Predisposing factor - too dry air in the apartment. The flower is washed under a warm shower and treated with a weak solution of "Aktellik" (1-2 ml of the drug per liter of water).
  • Thrips. The main feature at an early stage is the larvae on the underside of the leaves. The provoking factor is the high temperature in the room. The plant is sprayed every week with Actellica.
  • Wailing and falling leaves. It happens with a lack of moisture. It is necessary to increase the intensity and frequency of irrigation.
  • Fall leaves in winter. This leads to a violation of the temperature regime - low or high temperature.
  • Brown tips of the leaves. Low temperature or drafts in the room. Damaged leaves are removed, the flower is placed in heat.
  • Sluggish wrinkled leaves in summer. This indicates an excess of light. It is recommended to rearrange the flower in partial shade.

Peperomiya is interesting with a huge number of varieties, colors, forms of leaves. It will occupy a worthy place in any collection of home flowers.

General information

The plant has fleshy stems, dense opposite leaflets. Although peperomy and flowers, but this process is mostly unattractive and therefore it is grown as an ornamental leaf plant.

Cultivation is available both in the room and in the garden, but for the latter it is necessary to create the right environment.

Types and varieties

There is no possibility to tell about all the abundance of flower species, so we will only recall some species.

Peperomiya tupolistnaya is a perennial herb. It has petiolate oval leaves, fleshy, stems without a gun. Many varieties are derived from this species.

Peperomiya magnolistnaya perennial, reaching 25 mm. Shoots branched, knotty. Leaves alternate, glossy, small. The flowers are small, light green.

There are also variegated varieties of this species.

Wrinkled peperomia This is a low flower with petioles growing from rhizomes. The leaves have a lot of brown veins, standing out on the green leaves. Inflorescence forms a spikelet, which is quite attractive.

Peperomiya kuszylistnaya This is a herbaceous perennial plant. It has petiolate leaves, dark green in color with a lilac shade from the edges.

There is a variegated variety.

Peperomiya silver grows as an epiphyte and as a terrestrial perennial plant. Attracts with its green leaves streaked with white.

Peperomiya reddish perennial flower with red stems. The leaves are opposite, green above and red below.

Peperomiya kaperta lilyan attracts lovers of floriculture with large leaves, dotted with light veins.

Peperomiya many-stained has green stems covered with brown spots. The leaves, decorated with white veins, grow from the rhizome and reach 20 cm in length.

Round-leaved peperomia or monolith ampelous plant with long creeping stems and small green leaves.

Peperomia care at home

Care for peperomia at home has its own nuances. This flower likes a bright light, but the rays should not fall directly on the plant. In winter, you also need good bright lighting.

Temperature is important to keep about the same level almost the entire year. In the summer it should be about 22 degrees, and in the winter - 20, but it is impossible for the strip of thermometer to fall below 17.

Irrigation of peperomia and air humidity

During the period of growing green mass, perperomy requires strong watering with a soft liquid, which should be slightly warmer than the temperature in the room. From autumn to winter, watering should be reduced, and it is better that the flower dries out a little, than water stagnates in a pot.

Peperomia is not particularly important humidity, but if the air is too dry, you can apply sprays that are generally positive for the plant. Perform this procedure only in the summer.

Fertilizer for peperomia

For fertilizers use complex mineral supplements for indoor plants. Fertilizers are applied starting in the spring and ending in the fall every 15 days. And in winter, once every 30 days.

In order to better branch the flower stems, you can pinch them, which will facilitate this process.

Peperomia transplant

To transplant peperomia you need to take a couple of centimeters a larger pot, put drainage and soil into it, which consists of two lobes of leafy earth and one sand each, peat and humus soil.

Young plants are transplanted every year, and old times for a couple of years.

Peperomia reproduction by cuttings

Peperomia are mainly propagated by cutting. You can use the stem and apical material. On the handle should be a couple of nodes. They can be placed for the formation of roots in the water, and you can immediately in the ground, which is made from sand, humus and peat.

Planted material covered with glass and kept warm, at about 25 degrees. It will take about a month, and the roots will appear, and then they can be seated in separate containers.

Peperomia leaf breeding

To multiply a plant with a leaf, you need to cut it and plant it in peat mixed with sand, also water or sphagnum can be used for rooting.

For more rapid formation of the roots need to make greenhouse conditions. It will take 20-30 days, leaf rooting will end and the plant can be planted in a pot.

In the case of the formation of an oversized bush, the peperomia is divided into a couple of smaller plants. This procedure is carried out in the spring during transplantation, using the same soil.

Diseases and pests

Peperomia can cause various problems.

  • For example, leaf fall most often this happens due to a drop in temperature below normal. Another reason is the lack of moisture.
  • Rotting plants It happens because of too much soil moistening.
  • Yellowing leaves happens because of burns or too many feedings.
  • Also spots sometimes appear on the leaves. They can be the result of pests or diseases, such as dropsy.
  • Pests that are dangerous for peperomia are spider mites, scale insects, worms, thrips and nematodes..

Features of growing and availability

Peperomia are quite common plants, often found in amateur growers, and the range of species presented for sale in stores is also quite wide. However, the most decorative variegated varieties do not linger on the shelves, so it is difficult to purchase them.

Growing difficulties is not, even inexperienced flower growers deal with this task.

After the acquisition in the cold season, the plant is better not to disturb until spring. Shipping soil is quite suitable for growth in a few months.

Air humidity

All peperomies grow well both in conditions of high humidity of the surrounding air, and in the dry microclimate of city apartments. It is useless to spray glossy varieties - the water rolls off from them - it is intended by nature to protect against waterlogging, and pubescent and striated is dangerous - this is fraught with ugly spots on the leaves, which leads to a loss of decoration. Sometimes they spray the reverse side of leaves to prevent the appearance of spider mites.

The plant does not tolerate a sharp or significant decrease in air temperature. Therefore, it is protected from drafts, practically does not carry out on the street in summer and contain at a sufficiently comfortable temperature all year round: in summer it is no higher than +25 degrees, and in winter the lower limit is +16.

Peperium root system is very compact, so the plant does not tolerate excess water. Stagnant moisture provokes root rot. Watering should be moderate in the warm season, and when the temperature of the content decreases in winter - rare. If the plant and in the winter is contained in a hot heated dwelling, then water it as in summer.

For peperias, complex fertilizers are used universal or for decorative-leaved indoor flowers. Feed in the warm season at the recommended dose about once every 20 days. From October to February, fertilizers are not applied.

Transplant method

Every 2 - 3 years change the substrate. To do this, take the plant out of the pot, gently shake off the ground, straighten the roots with a stick, freeing them from the remnants of the soil, check for rot. Poor areas are cut out, the bush is divided if necessary, the roots are disinfected in coal or cinnamon. Without drying, planted in a fresh mixture. The pot is selected small size, drainage is required at the bottom.

Breeding methods

  • The seed path is used if necessary to propagate a rare variety and in the presence of F1 seeds. These are hybrids of the first generation, only they convey fully the characteristics of the variety. If there is a certain deficiency of some species and varieties of peperomy, this method can solve the problem. Sow the seeds on the surface of wet earth, create a microclimate with 100% moisture - cover with a transparent material. Sprout in the light. If the shoots are friendly, then with the appearance of these leaves the seedlings dive. Then seated in separate containers.
  • Rooting cuttings carried out after the planned cutting of ampelous species. The twig is rooted in water, in wet moss or in a mixture of sand with peat under a transparent cover. Rooting occurs in about 3 weeks.
  • Leaf cuttings propagate some upright or bush peperomii. The cutting on the leaf is left short, 2-4 cm. It is placed for rooting in wet moss or sand. Rooting in water is possible - the tip immersion depth is no more than 5 mm. Roots appear in about 3 weeks.
  • Bush division carried out with the spring plant transplant. It is important to choose a small pot to avoid souring of the soil that was not developed by the roots.

The flower of the peperomia of decorative value is not in itself. This spike or ear with very small nondescript flowers. However, a compact bush with beautiful leaves becomes even more attractive when high flowers appear above it in large numbers. The overall habit of the plant is quickened. Flowering occurs most often in the spring - in the summer, but with home maintenance without temperature differences, it is possible that a second late autumn flowering will occur.

Beginning fading flowers are removed along with the peduncle.

Problems of growing peperomia

  • The most common problem is root rot. This phenomenon occurs when excessive watering and long-moist soil, especially at low temperatures.
  • With excessively dry ambient air, the plant can be attacked by a spider mite.
  • Peperomia is one of the most delicious plants for mealybugs. It is removed with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol solution.
  • Sometimes in the summer the plant loses a rich color and wilts, even in wet ground. Most likely, it suffers from an excess of light and elevated temperatures. It is necessary to priten the plant and place it below, because the coolest indoor air is on the floor.

Common species and varieties

Located on a long reddish trunk alternately. More often grown as an ampelnaya plant.
  • Peperomia golovataya (Peperomia glabella) - ampelous plant with bright green small wide leaves.

Florist note

  • Peperomii very convenient to make a composition. In the presence of several different species, they form a beautiful curtain. Given the same growing conditions and a slow increase in the bushes, many plants can be arranged in a small space, which will not be planted soon.
  • Variegated forms to multiply the sheet is not recommended: most often in this case there is a green leaf. Can be used for breeding stem cuttings.

Why leaves dry?

Most likely the lack of watering. No matter how resistant the peperomia is to dry soils, it still does not tolerate a complete long-term lack of moisture. The plant can also react to excessive watering for a long time. Then the drying leaves are a signal that the roots begin to rot. The lower leaves on the bushy perperiae eventually die off due to natural causes, processes soon appear in their place.

How does peperomia overwinter?

If it is impossible to lower the wintering temperature to 16 degrees, the plant is left in normal room conditions. In this case, you need to provide good lighting, otherwise the internodes will be long, the thickness of the flower will disappear. It is better to refrain from dressings.

Peperium variety is huge. All new varieties with high decorative properties are derived. We wish you good luck in growing this sweet pet!

Peperomia species

Peperomia often housewives are placed in a hanging pot. Thus you can give the room an unusual look. To decorate the room, the hostess use cut stems. Bush varieties are often used to decorate office space. They are small in size, the stems do not exceed 30 centimeters. The bush is small in size, on its branches there are many dark green leaves.

During flowering on the plant buds are formed in white, they emanate a pleasant aroma. Whichever variety is preferred, before purchasing a flower, you should study the information on how to properly care for, water, trim and multiply the peperomia. The plant has a rich selection of varieties. Therefore, each grower will be able to choose for himself the plant that he will have "to his liking." Home care

In order for the plant to please its owner, you need to properly care for him. It is not difficult, the main thing is to follow certain rules. The flower is unpretentious, so take care of peperomia at home is very simple. The plant is very fond of bright light, but it should not get direct sunlight. If the flower is affected by the rays of the sun, then the stem and leaves will quickly wither, lose their colorful shade.

If the plant is grown in a room facing south, then perperomy is established deep in the room or protected from the unwanted sun by a paper canopy. Lighting depends on the type of flower. If peperomia leaves a dark green shade, the plant is located in partial shade or shade. And if the peperomia has motley and unusual leaves, then it is better to place it where there is enough sun. In addition to light, the plant needs the right temperature. Adhere to the following rules when ensuring the desired temperature regime:

  1. The house should have an average temperature.
  2. In summer and spring, when peperomia releases young shoots, the temperature in the room should reach 23 C.
  3. In winter, lower temperatures are acceptable. But it should not be less than 16 C, otherwise the plant can get sick.
  4. The flower can not be taken out on the street, so it is wrapped in paper or newspaper for transportation, and the pot is placed in a bag with a tight and stable bottom.

Peperomia should not be placed near drafts. If the flower is placed incorrectly, then it may fall leaves.

Required ground moisture

Peperomia rosso care at home does not take much trouble. Humidity is not important for the life of the flower. The plant is recommended to spray on time. But if this is not done, then it is not critical. Spraying is necessary to refresh the leaves and clean them from unnecessary dust and dirt.

In the vegetative period, the plant requires frequent watering. Experts recommend using soft water for irrigation, which has been settled for at least one day. Its temperature should be above room temperature at 2 ° C. In the autumn and winter, watering is reduced. Peperomia will more easily endure drought than excess water. If the plant is watered too often, then there is a risk of root disease, various fungal diseases or stems may appear and the leaves will wither.

If peperomia began to fall leaves, the plant is not sufficiently moistened. It needs feeding. You can do without it for some time only if the flower is planted in nutrient soil. Peperomiya loves complex mineral fertilizers. Experts recommend using only those fertilizers that are produced specifically for the pepper family. Such compositions are purchased in specialized stores.

In spring and summer, the plant is fed 2 times per month. In the autumn and winter, peperomia is fertilized 1 time in 30 days.

Flowering and pruning

The flowering period is in summer. During this period, the plant produces spiciform inflorescences, located between the foliage. The flowering plant must be frequently sprayed and fertilized. Inflorescences do not carry a decorative decoration of the room, so experts recommend getting rid of the inflorescences at the stage of their formation. Flowering takes away a lot of strength from the peperomia, so the bush itself can thin out. It often happens that, after flowering, the peperomia sheds leaves and individual stems. Pruning is necessary only for large flower varieties. It is needed to give the plant a beautiful shape and more voluminous bushiness. How to trim:

  1. First, the plant bush is carefully examined.
  2. Preconsidered form, desirable for the flower.
  3. Then the garden scissors removed the extra twigs.
  4. And also pinch off weak or diseased shoots.

Thanks to the cutting procedure, the plant becomes a neater form. If for a gardener the health of a bush, its bulk is important, then the inflorescences are removed at the stage of their appearance. If the peperomia is small, the pruning procedure is done only to remove weak stems and wilted leaves. Circumcision is better for young plants.

Breeding methods

Now in the flower shops you can buy many different varieties of peperomia. To properly propagate the plant, you need to listen to the opinion of experts. For reproduction apply several ways:

  1. Cuttings.
  2. Leaf cuttings.
  3. Seeds.
  4. The division of the bush.

The soil is prepared for grafting. You can cook it yourself at home. To do this, mix in equal proportions humus, peat, sand. If you do not want to do this at home, then ready-made composition is acquired. For reproduction of peperomia, apical and stem cuttings are used. For breeding, a healthy shoot is taken, on which there is at least one node. The stalk is cleaved off neatly, then placed in water for several days until roots form. After that, the seedling is transplanted into the ground.

The pot with seedlings is covered with glass and placed in a well-lit room. Room temperature should not be less than 15 ° C.

For plants carefully observe, watering in a timely manner. A month later, seedlings should be well rooted. After this period, young flowers can be transplanted into separate pots.

Reproduction leaf cuttings

This breeding method is considered the simplest. For this purpose, healthy and large leaves are cut off on the flower with a stationery knife or sharp scissors. It is necessary for reproduction to take only healthy leaves, without signs of bacterial infections. At the beginning of the sheet is left a small scape, which is placed in the water. To leaf rooted faster, it is placed in a warm room. Breeding rules:

  1. Once every two days the water changes to clean. This is done so that the sapling does not rot.
  2. Usually after 3 weeks on the leaf appear roots.
  3. Immediately after that, he transplanted into a separate pot.
  4. Take care of the leaf as an adult flower.

Homeland plants

Peperomia has an exotic origin. The homeland of this plant is South America, a region of subtropical and tropical climate.

Let Peperomiya and lives in fairly favorable conditions, the plant still does not have a great height, often no more than fifty centimeters.

This is due to nutrients that are very quickly spent on the formation of very dense leaves with superficial waxy coating and shoots.

This plant is considered a kind of epiphyte, that is, located in the crowns of large tropical incredibly high inhabitants. This determines the nutritional characteristics of Peperomia, which is carried out from the soil and moisture, which comes with precipitation and air.

Main plant species

In particular, Peperomia that are grown at home are divided into the following groups:

  • Upright or erect:
    • Peperomiya Zolistisististnaya - Peperomia obtusifolia aurea,
    • Peachomia Clusielifolia - Peperomia clusiifolia Hook,
    • Peperomiya Magnolistnaya - Peperomia Magnoliaefolia,
    • Peperomiya Tupolistnaya - Peperomia obtusifolia Dietr.
  • Ampelnye:
    • Peperomia Lazyaschenaya - Peperomia Prostrata,
    • Peperomia Creeping - Peperomia scandens,
  • Bush or bush:
    • Peperomiya kaperata lillian - Peperomia caperata Lillian,
    • Peperomia Rosso - Peperomia Rosso,
    • Peperomia Shriveled - Peperomia caperata.

The height of bushy peperomia is from ten to fifteen centimeters. These bushes are quite nice in appearance, and the leaves are very long with fragile petioles made in the shape of a cap. During the flowering period, inflorescences in the form of an ear always rise on such caps.

Peperomia Rosso - Peperomia Rosso

It is considered a very rare flowering species with fairly large foliage. Also has a very impressive color range of leaves. They are very green with a dark shade at the top and red with a burgundy shade at the bottom.

Bush from geometric regular and elongated leaves form natural images in the form of a flower-star. Although this plant has a kind of exotic look, it is also unpretentious compared to other types of Peperomia.

Peperomia obtusifolia aurea - Peperomia Zolistisististnaya

It has an incredible color leaves. On the green with a dark shade of the surface of a smooth, glittering, fleshy leaflet, yellow ones stretch closer to the golden spot.

Peperomia clusiifolia Hook - Serrae Peperomia

This type of flower is a fairly large plant with thick stems that rush up. The shape and size of the leaflets are most reminiscent of peperomia magnolialy.

Difference from this Peperomia with magnolia-leaf only in leaf color, dull and thick. They are quite green with a dark shade, and a little reddish, and the edges with a purple-dark shade.

The form Variegata has a much more unusual color. The leaves of this Peperomia have a smooth transition from green with a dark shade of the midrib to white with a milky shade or to yellowish with a red tinge of the periphery and to the purple edge.

Peperomia scandens - Creeping Peperomia

This plant is a bit similar with round-leaved peperia - Peperomia rotundifolia. But the leaves are rounded in length to one centimeter, the stems are red with the effect of rapid growth, which are located with a little less.

The color of the leaves of this flower is incredibly surprising. They are not green, but variegated with a shiny or bronze spot or spots.

Peperomia Prostrata - Peperomia Lazing

It has pink-green stems. The leaves are oval in shape and are able to reach a length of five centimeters, they also have a pointed end. Also, the plant has the ability to grow vines, of course, provided very reliable tying to the support.

Peperomiya Ampelnaya

Basically, the difference is only in the color and shape of the flowers. Stems are able to reach one and a half meters.

Peperomia Magnoliaefolia - Peperomia Magnolialist

This plant is considered erect with fleshy branching stems with red color, made in an oval shape, it can be covered with a waxy bloom, and the leaves have rounded ends.

All leaves are large for size among peperomy, capable of reaching up to eight centimeters wide and about fifteen centimeters in length. They are made in the form of a magnolia, respectively, the name Peperomia Magnolia is the name of it.

The leaves are green in color, and may also have a yellow edge in broad form. The flowering period of this plant is mainly June and May. The inflorescences are made in the shape of a cob, which is slightly elongated.

Peperomia obtusifolia Dietr - Tupolis Peperomia

Basically, this erect plant is recognized by the ovoid and oval shape of the leaflets with a cropped top.

The color of the leaves can be completely different, often it is a dark green shade, but white leaves closer to the milky shade may also occur, as well as gray-green and cream with a golden rim.

The size of such leaves can reach from ten to twelve centimeters in length.

Peperomia caperata Lillian - Peperomia Caperata Lilian

This plant deserved its name because of the unusual shape of the inflorescence. A large number of peperium inflorescences are in the form of a tubule, and in this species the inflorescence is upwardly a blooming tubule, slightly resembling the shape of a lily.

Also, the similarity with this flower can be blacked out sufficiently large and common to all kaperta white pure shade.

Peperomia caperata - Peperomia Shriveled

This plant is considered somewhat diverse. That is, the flower received its name in connection with the structure of its leaves, they are somewhat sparkling and at the same time shriveled.

The extended areas of the so-called corrugations have the lightest color, and in the valleys between each there is a little bit of a leaf tint.

Brazil is considered the birthplace of this plant. Peperomia Shriveled loves heat, and accordingly can be propagated by bunches of leaflets. It is able to grow both in loose soil and in hydroponic culture (that is, groundless), and at the same time does not require any transshipment or additional fertilizing.

Useful Properties of Peperomia

As some gardeners say, Peperomia can have some beneficial effects on the atmosphere in the room and in the apartment in general.

If you see this plant, you will immediately have a desire to smile at it.

Such an open and friendly character of Peperomia is indicated by a large number of leaflets of ampelous varieties, a very cheerful motley shade and the associated growth of the types of bushes.

All the above effects of peperonia can indicate that it can help keep your apartment’s energy field clean.

Peperomia can smooth out all the negative influences in your apartment. The plant will warm and delight its owners, at the same time adjusting them to a great mood.

At the moment when Peperomia will change the energy of your apartment in a more positive bias, it will also prohibit the manifestation of various diseases. It is said that the plant is equipped with a positive effect on the digestive system, the state of the mammary glands and gall bladder.

Also, another plant can be said to have a beneficial influence; it is the ability to secrete phytoncides. These phytoncides are able to clear the air of all harmful bacteria.

And because of this, it is worthwhile to install Peperomia in my apartment, it is very desirable in the room where the child is located, who often gets sick. The plant will give the child fresh purified air, and thereby preventing the penetration of harmful microbes into his body by airborne droplets.

Conditions for favorable growth

Basically, caring for the plant and even at home is quite simple.

The conditions themselves that relate to light for a flower, in particular, depend on the type of plant itself.

For example, plants that have a dark green color should grow on the north windows; .

With a lack of light leaves on the plant will grow a small form with a less saturated color.

As you already know, Peperomia is considered to be a tropical plant, that is, it tolerates various kinds of drafts rather poorly and carries heat very well.

In tropical natural conditions, the plant lives in very high humidity, but the dry air in the city for this plant is not terrible.

The most demanding in terms of air humidity can only be a peperomia variety with delicate leaves, while species with fleshy leaves can tolerate a dry stream of air.

Spraying during the summer period for a flower is very useful, however plants with pubescent and folded leaves should not be subjected to spraying.

Drying is not terrible Peperomii. This is mainly due to the leaves and stems, because in most species they are fleshy and able to accumulate a sufficient amount of moisture.

Overwatering is the greatest danger. If pereperium pereuvlazhnit, then the stems and root system will begin to rot.

Watering this plant must be defended with some water, just a couple of degrees warmer than the air in your room.

In summer, watering should be moderate, and in winter, the plant should be watered very rarely, until the moment when the ground cover is completely dry. And insufficient watering can lead to the fall of the leaves of the lower portion.

Top dressing during the period of intensive growth in the spring and summer period involves the use of a simple complex fertilizer for standard ornamental deciduous plants only a couple of times in thirty days.

In winter, this procedure is obliged to be reduced to once every thirty days.

Peperomia is transplanted mainly as needed, approximately once every two years or even less frequently. You can use a pot small enough, because the roots of a flower are not very well developed.

The presence in the pot of a sufficiently strong drainage layer (up to six centimeters) is a mandatory item. Peperomia grows rather slowly, but if, due to external signs, the plant simply ceases to grow, then you should turn your eyes, your root system does not look out from under the ground.

The plant needs loose soil. You can apply a special mixture of humus, sand, peat and hardwood in the ratio (two to one on one to one), or a mixture of peat, foliage and sand in equal parts.

Very dense soil can also lead to rotting of the root system. The land should be neutral or slightly acidic.

Evergreen Perennial Types

There are a great many types of peperomia - more than 1000. But the main ones that are often found on domestic windowsills are 11. There are features of each popular type described in the table.

Table - “Domesticated” Peperomia

Peperomiya is the favorite of florists and landscape designers. Due to the variety of species and varieties of this evergreen plant, the lords of the bouquets create delightful flower compositions. Peperomia shoots with leaves are most commonly used, but some species and varieties are grown including for the sake of flowers.

What to look for when buying

Just knowing how to care for peperomia after a purchase is not enough. Making a choice of a copy in a flower shop, pay attention to three nuances.

  1. Foliage color. The selected plant should have a rich, bright leaf color. It is good if there are patterns on the leaves. Patterned shrub looks more interesting in the interior.
  2. The quality of the stem. Visually, the stem should be healthy. Any damage on the shoots - a wake-up call to refuse the selected instance.
  3. No rot at the root. Gray moss at the base of the root is a clear sign of a rotting root system. Sick plant in the house to anything, given the risk of transfer of the disease to other indoor flowers.

Peperomia care at home

Growing peperomia at home is based on two "NOT": not to overwet and not expose to the sun. However, there are other - minor, but also no less important recommendations for care.

To correctly select the lighting for the evergreen southerner, you need to look at the color of its foliage. If the leaves are uniform green, feel free to send the pot with peperomia to the northern windowsill. But the variegated copies of such a location is not suitable - they better look to the West or East.

Protection from the destructive direct rays of the sun requires peperomia, regardless of the type and variety. Ultraviolet can damage the sheet plate. At first the leaves will turn yellow, and then completely fall off due to sunburn.

Humidity level

Peperomia doesn't care how wet it is in your house. Despite the fact that in nature this evergreen shrub grows in conditions of high humidity, dry air is unable to destroy it. Varieties with dense green leaves survive well without additional moisture, even during the heating period. But specimens with a delicate sheet plate dry air transfer somewhat worse, but not critical. In summer, peperomia can be sprayed by performing bath procedures about once a week.

Watering features

Peperomia, like a camel, accumulates moisture in its fleshy leaves. The water supply of the plant is sufficient. Therefore, a short memory of a grower who has forgotten to moisten the soil is not afraid of him. In summer, watering should be moderate. Its average frequency is once every two weeks. In the cold season it is necessary to water much less often. Then, when the substrate in the pot dries completely.

In winter, the evergreen souther woman needs feeding more than once a month. With the advent of heat, the fortification of the soil should be intensified and carried out once a fortnight. To do this, it is enough to purchase ordinary fertilizer, which is designed for decorative and deciduous indoor flowers.

The southerner's root system is underdeveloped. Therefore, a big pot is not worth buying for it. Transplant peperomii carried out no more than once every two years after flowering. It is important to properly organize the drainage (about 6 cm) and properly prepare the soil. All five of the following "ingredients" ideal for peperomia substrate should be taken in a ratio of 2: 2: 2: 2: 1. Recipe for soil preparation:

  • garden land,
  • humus,
  • sod land
  • peat,
  • coarse sand.

Peperomia grows so slowly that some disturbing flower growers think that it does not grow at all. A sure sign that the flower needs a new “house” is the roots that have overcome drainage and have almost got out of the pot.

If you are chasing bush planting, you should know how to form the peperomia in such a way that the plant is shaped like a ball. Each escape of the southern women should pinch, removing about a fifth of it. Regular pruning will quickly achieve the desired spherical effect.

3 breeding methods

Reproduction room perperomia possible seeds, cuttings and division of the bush. Each of the three methods is simple to implement and very effective.

Features To try this method of “cloning” a tropical beauty in practice, you need to wait for the peperomia to fade, and collect the seeds. Take advantage of such planting material will happen no earlier than March. The beginning of spring is considered the most favorable period for planting seeds.

  1. We mix river sand with universal soil in a 1: 1 ratio and fill it with substrate forms for seedlings.
  2. Moderately water the substrate and lay the seeds of the subshrub no deeper than 2 mm.
  3. Cover the seedlings with cling film or clear glass to create a semblance of a greenhouse.
  4. Every day for five minutes we air the seeds, removing the film or lifting the glass.
  5. When seedlings with two leaf plates appear, we plant them in separate small pots.

Features Do not worry if your beauty does not bloom. You still have two effective ways in stock. Cuttings remaining after trimming a plant can also be used as planting material. Before rooting the stem in the form of a cutting, you need to remove the leaves from it and make sure that there are three or more growth points on it. Eight out of ten cuttings take root without any problems.

  1. We disinfect the sharp kitchen knife and cut several cuttings with it.
  2. Omit the cuttings in "Kornevin" for an hour.
  3. We get out of the "Kornevin", sprinkle a slice of cutting with crushed activated carbon and dry the planting material for a day.
  4. Root in moss, sand or in water.
  5. Two months later, we plant in ordinary soil and proceed to the traditional care.

Dividing bush

Features Reproduction by dividing the bush coincides with the transplant of a plant, which is carried out in the spring - no more than once every two years. Lush bush easily divided into two or three copies. For the separation will need a pre-disinfected kitchen knife.

  1. Using a knife, we divide the root system of a plant prepared for transplant into several parts (depending on the size of the root).
  2. Sprinkle each slice with crushed chalk or powder of activated charcoal.
  3. We plant in a pot and take care, as usual.

Enemies among insects

Those who know how to take care of peperomia, and apply the rules of care in practice, should not be afraid of the attacks of insect pests. But to know about possible enemies is still necessary. The following table will help you understand the symptoms and treatment.

Table - Peperomia pests and ways to control them

If gray rot is found on the root fragment of perperomy, the plant is unlikely to be saved. The primary task after the diagnosis of the disease is to isolate the diseased flower from other residents of the window sill. Most likely, the plant will have to be thrown away, and the pot should be boiled together with the tray in order to prevent the spread of rot.

Flower history

In general, the evergreen shrub with endurance endures all the mistakes made by a beginner florist in the process of leaving. The plant is rarely sick. But aptly. The table presents the five most common problems. Any of these can be solved by care correction.

Table - Peperomia Diseases

The Americans, whom peperomia fell in love with at first sight, called her in their own way - “friendly family”. And the followers of Feng Shui philosophy could not pass by and picked up this idea, which, obviously, was in the air. According to this eastern teaching, care for a peperomia in a pot is shown to newlyweds and families in which the spouses cannot find a common language. It is said that the plant instantly absorbs negative emotions, and instead of them it releases positive vibes into the air, which push people towards reconciliation and give a good mood.

Responses: “The main thing is not to pour the“ mouse tail ”!”

Peperomi some of the best ornamental deciduous collection plants. Firstly, because they are mostly small plants. Secondly, it is very diverse in texture. Thirdly, there are a lot of them (only I have 36 types of them!). Fourthly, they are very simple in care and are available even to the beginner. Fifth, their cute little unpretentious flowers are very original))) Sixth, many of the peperias can withstand shade, and some grow beautifully in the sun. There are even succulent peperomia. Seventhly, they reproduce perfectly stem and leaf cuttings.

I have peperomia of peperomium (Peperomia obtusifolia) and a grade of Kirsten of marble peperomia (P. marmorata ’Kirsten’). P. blunt leaf came to me last summer, thanks to my mom. It rooted easily and blossomed in the past and this year. Peduncles 15-20 cm long, and look like rat tails. This year it has grown, a big one, and takes up a lot of space, it can be grown in limbo.

This interesting plant, perperomy, has settled on my window sill since late summer. In the flower shop due to the lack of light, he was discounted to 50 rubles, he had to undertake the fulfillment of the mission to save him. When I brought him home, he quickly came to his senses, from which I drew the following conclusions about this plant: 1. Unpretentious: it does not require special attention and care. Polly - well, forgot to fertilize - will survive. You can not spray, tolerates flat air. 2. It is not necessary to fill it: the leaves immediately become soft. Overflow plant can die. I try to water all my plants often and little by little. 3. Grows better without a bright sun: on the east or west side, and not in the south. 4. It is also possible to replant in shallow pots: the roots of the peperomia, like those of grass, are located shallowly. The second name, peperomia, is due to its spike-shaped inflorescences - “mouse tails”.

The origin and appearance of perperomy

Peperomiya favorite flower growers for simplicity

The name of peperomia in translation from ancient Greek means “perceptible” (peperi - pepper, homois - like).

The genus includes several species with tuberous roots. This is mainly peperomia growing in Mexico. After flowering, the foliage dies, and the tuber can withstand long periods of drought. Other representatives form caudex (stem bearing signs of both stem and root) and may be of interest to collectors of exotic plants of unusual shape.

In the indoor horticulture grow bush and ampelous types of peperomia.

The size and color of the leaf plates of peperomia are incredibly diverse. The most typical form is heart-shaped, round or broadly oval. Breeders cultivated varieties with miniature and large, smooth and corrugated, glossy and pubescent leaves. Color varies from light to dark green, leaf blades can be decorated with specks, stripes and divorces of a contrasting color. The leaves are located on a small shoot oppositely and rather thickly, forming a compact ornamental shrub.

The size, color and shape of peperomia leaf blades are incredibly diverse.

A variety of home-grown species

Despite the huge number of peperomia species found in nature, about 30 of them are grown at home. Among the most common are:

  • Peperomia is blunt. Compact bush, reaching a height of 40 cm. The leaves, having a rounded shape and covered with a wax coating, are attached to the stalk with the help of thick petioles.
  • Pepperomia magnolia. Fleshy stem, oval-shaped leaves. On the surface of the dark green stripes, and some varieties of light yellow spots.
  • Peperomiya golovataya. Creeping shoots up to 22 cm in length. It is grown as an ampelous or ground cover plant.
  • Peperomiya round-leaved. Very spectacular plant. The leaves are small (only 1 cm in diameter), densely cover shoots, forming a lush bush.
  • Peperomiya wrinkled. A miniature flower that grows up to 10 cm. Heart-shaped leaves are located on long stalks of a pink shade. The surface is velvety and very pleasant to the touch.
  • Peperomiya chisel-shaped. It features an interesting crescent-shaped leaf shape. Because of this, they vaguely resemble pea pods. The color of the leaf plates is light green. Blossoms in small green flowers.
  • Climbing peperomiya (creeping). Creeping view. The heart-shaped fleshy leafy plates are located on a pinkish stem.
  • Peperomiya kuszylistnaya. Pretty tall plant (compared to other species). It reaches a height of 0.5 m. The stalk is brown with large and luscious leaves, the size of which is 15 cm. A distinctive feature of the species is the purple shade of leaf blades.
  • Peperomiya Kaperata Lilian. Received the name due to the shape of the inflorescence resembling a lily flower. A distinctive feature of the variety is the snow-white color of flowers.
  • Peperomiya Rosso. Fleshy leaves, painted on the bottom side in red. They grow on short stalks in bunches. The plant is very showy, leaf blades are so bright that sometimes they are mistaken for flowers.
  • Peperomiya Happy Bean. Original plant. Translated into Russian, the name of this type of perperium sounds like “happy bean”. Peperomia leaves have an elongated shape and twist along the central vein, outwardly resembling long pods.

Magnolia, thick-leaved, chisel peperomia and other species in the photo

Even in flower shops you can often see pallets with peperomia of different varieties, while its name is not indicated, and the label is usually written mix or plant mix. Translated from English, this word means "mixture." That is, in the same pallet can be offered different types and varieties of plants. You can find out what sort of peperomia you purchased by comparing its appearance with the description in the catalog.

Features of landing and transplantation

Young peperias require an annual transplant. Perform the procedure in March, when they begin to increase the green mass. Flowers older than three years often do not need to replant, do this only if the peperomia has become too crowded in the pot, and roots have appeared from the drainage holes.

If you purchased peperomia in the store, do not rush to replace it. In spring, this can be done only two weeks after the plant has entered your house. It must acclimatize. In other seasons, the flowers are transplanted exclusively by way of transfer to a larger pot.

Preparation: Flower pot selection and soil preparation

When choosing a new pot for perperomy, please note that it should be shallow and not too large.

(2:1:1). Instead of the latter, a little vermiculite or perlite can be added to the substrate for greater looseness.

When choosing a ready soil for perperomy, give preference to a substrate for succulents, but the soil mixture will need to be slightly improved by adding leaf soil to it.

Incremental transplant process

  1. At the bottom of the container, pour a layer of expanded clay at least 3 cm. Pepperomia roots require good aeration, and stagnant moisture is detrimental to the plant. From above - about the same amount of freshly prepared substrate.
  2. Pot with peperia jam on both sides and very carefully remove the flower along with a clod of earth.
  3. Shake the soil and rinse the roots. Do it carefully, they are quite fragile.
  4. Moisten the potted soil and place the plant in a container. Spread the roots.
  5. Fill the void with earth, while it is not necessary to tamp the soil.
  6. Moisten the substrate once more, and when it settles add a little more soil.
  7. If there is water in the pan, then be sure to drain it.

Adults peperomii need to transplant only if they are closely in the pot

What and when to water?

Thick and fleshy peperomia leaves are able to accumulate moisture, so the plant tolerates drought well. However, one should not allow strong drying of the substrate, especially on hot summer days, because the leaves can lose turgor and fly around.

Watering peperomia requires moderate, the plant does not tolerate stagnant water, and dampness can lead to rotting of the roots and foliage. Water the flower only after the top layer of the earth has dried in the container. Do this carefully, moisten the edge of the pot, making sure that moisture does not fall on the leaf blades. In winter, watering should be reduced. The following procedure during this period is carried out when the earth in the pot is almost completely dried..

Water for watering perperomy should be used soft, defend it for at least two or three days. Everything else, it should be warm (the temperature is slightly above room temperature). Watering with cold water from the tap can lead to the death of peperomia.

How and when to feed?

To leaves peperomii were decorative and bright all year round, the plant requires fertilizers containing nitrogen. Ready-made supplements for decorative and hardwoods, which include not only this macro element in sufficient volume, but also other substances necessary for the plant - phosphorus, potassium, manganese, and boron - are quite suitable. Peperomia responds very well to the introduction of organic matter.

In the spring and summer alternate fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers. Hold them once every two weeks. In autumn and winter, stop fertilizing is not worth it, you only need to reduce the concentration and increase the intervals between treatments (it will be enough to combine irrigation with fertilizer once a month).

Universal liquid complex fertilizers are quite suitable for feeding with peperomia.

Flowering period

Peperomia blooms most often in late spring - early summer. Sometimes flowers may appear several times a year. The inflorescences are small and unremarkable, so some flower growers believe that it is best to remove them so that the plant does not waste their strength on them.

Some species have fairly original flowers with a pleasant aroma (for example, Frazer's peperomia). To achieve their appearance, it is necessary to provide the plant with a short light day and comfortable conditions.

The flowering of Peperomia Frazer, unlike most of its “relatives”, has a decorative value.

Trimming and shaping compositions

Pinching and pruning can be done throughout the year. The plant responds well to the procedure, builds up new foliage and forms a compact bush. Remove excess leaves, pinch the top of the shoots, creating the desired shape of the plant.

Uncontrollably growing peperomia looks rather sloppy

Peperomia beautifully complements the composition with other decorative leafy plants. Looks good with succulents, ferns and other indoor flowers.

Peperomia leaves are very decorative, the plant can become a decoration of any composition with other indoor flowers.

Pest and disease control of peperomia

Pests affecting perperomy only do not exist. Most often, the plant is subjected to attacks of the most common sucking insects. Another serious problem is root rot, which almost inevitably develops with frequent and / or excessively abundant watering. Generally, waterlogging is one of the few ways to surely ruin a flower.

Vegetative method - rooting cutting

  1. Cut off the stem stem with two or three nodes. Even without treatment with growth stimulants and disinfecting slices, they root perfectly.
  2. Prepare a shallow container. Wash it and fill it with a mixture of sheet and peat soil and sand (equally). Another way - rooting cuttings in water.
  3. Moisten the soil slightly and insert into it pieces of the stem at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other.
  4. To speed up the rooting process, cover the container with a plastic bag and place in a warm place.
  5. Ventilate the greenhouse daily and wash the condensate that accumulates on the bag.
  6. A week later, the cuttings usually give roots. Remove the bag and put the container with the fit on the window. After 3-4 weeks, transplant the young plants into separate flower pots.

Cutting - the most common method of reproduction of peperomia

Similarly, peperomia is propagated by leaf plates.

Dividing bush

This procedure should be carried out in the spring when transplanting plants.

  1. Remove the perperomy from the old container.
  2. Shake the substrate from the roots. Do this carefully so as not to damage the fragile roots.
  3. Divide the overgrown bush into the required number of parts. In one section there should be 2-3 escapes. Try not to damage the roots of perperomy, otherwise it will take a long time to take root.
  4. Prepare the substrate. Pour drainage into each pot and land each division in a separate container to a permanent place.

Multiply peperomia by dividing the bush in spring

Seed germination

This method is best suited for breeding annual plant species..

  1. Fill the pot with sand and peat (1: 1) substrate, lightly moisten and spread the seeds on the surface. Sprinkle them with soil and cover them with glass.
  2. Put the seed container in a warm place. Maintain the temperature at 24–25 ° C.
  3. Moisten the substrate daily by spraying it with a spray bottle.
  4. When the seedlings have 2 true leaflets, remove the glass and rip the small peperomies into the drawers, keeping a distance of 2 cm between the seedlings.
  5. Grown up young plants transplant in small pots (about 5 cm in diameter) and care for them, as for adult plants. As the root system grows, transfer them to a larger tank.

The seed method of breeding perperomy is used extremely rarely, most suitable for the reproduction of annual plant species

Flower garden reviews: is it easy to keep peperomia at home

Peperomiya - unpretentious plant. It blooms rarely, and the flowers resemble plantain arrows. If anyone knows how other types of peperias bloom - all bloom the same. His little leaves are very gentle. They are so nicely cast in silver. With proper care and in optimal conditions it grows very quickly. I presented many of my acquaintances with such handsome men. For pests, this plant is unattractive, which is important, but, as I noticed, it is very sensitive: if a person with an evil eye praises him, he immediately begins to languish. And here the most important thing is to pay him heightened attention. This flower grows in the room of the son, he is very comfortable there. Lovers of indoor flowers, give yourself the pleasure to own such beauty!

This plant has been with me for a long time and I realized that I don’t even know what it is called, in general, “peperomia is hollow” from the pepper family, a tropical flower, loves heat and moisture. Peperomia is completely unpretentious, does not require special care, does not need any top dressing, I water it, like all flowers, several times a week, I spray it with water. This flower grows VERY fast! I cut off small shoots to have such a small bush. The shape of the plant can be regulated, it can be allowed to hang down with branches and it will grow like a climbing flower. Peperomia also reproduces quite simply: tear off the leaf and place it in the water, in a couple of weeks it will take a root with which it can already be planted in the ground. I am pleased with its rich green color, and I also read that peperomia, stupid, removes formaldehyde and some other toxins from the air, actively enriches the air with oxygen, so the flower is doubly pleasant to me!

Peperomies form inflorescences similar to rat tails, consisting of tiny greenish flowers. Only these properties will help you determine that some unfamiliar plant is peperomia. There are 3 species that are popular for more than a few years. These are Peperomia caperata, Peperomia hederaefolia and Peperomia magnoliaefolia. An experienced gardener can easily recognize these species, but in addition to these species there are many more. There are also varieties of ampelous, bushy and erect, with juicy, wavy, smooth or hairy, green or variegated, and even striped like a watermelon leaves.

Once I was given a plant with original inflorescences of pale green color of a bizarre shape - and not like flowers, but plastered with something curved stems. I do not belong to a particularly enthusiastic flower growers, but such an interesting "miracle Yudo" accepted with joy. The name to it is peperomia shriveled (for leaves - morels). What was my surprise when I learned that a flower with glossy wax leaves, growing in my work and not really attracting my attention, is also a peperomia (already a magnolia leaf)! True, I have never bloomed it there - maybe in flowers I would draw an analogy. In any case, for me, a huge plus that these flowers have is relatively easy care. I water them about once a week (in the summer in the heat more often). Do not pour - the leaves begin to rot. The lighting for the morel is moderate, it is on my window, but in the shade it does not like the bright sun, the leaves become small and quickly subside. And magnolistnaya at work in the shadows - and feels good. Blossoms long enough for several months. It was such that the “wrinkled” almost died - in the autumn, when it was already cool, but there was no heating, I managed to fill it. The roots rotted, I replaced the ground, washed the roots, removed the bad ones — nothing, in a week literally went round. And with a magnolia leaf there are no problems at all. They multiply cuttings, take root very quickly. So I recommend to anyone who is more or less familiar with floriculture.

Lovers of decorative foliage plants will undoubtedly be interested in exotic beauty - peperomia. It attracts flower growers not only by appearance, but also by unpretentious care. The flower is resistant to various diseases and pests, grows well even in the shade. Avoid hypothermia, drafts, water and occasionally feed peperomia, and she will thank for the care with a spectacular foliage and elegant look.
