If you do not have time to constantly water the plants, you can build a pot with automatic irrigation, and the plants will take care of themselves.

Flower pots with automatic watering will have a nice design, and the mold for its casting will be printed on a 3D printer. We understand that not everyone has access to such equipment, so you can make a pot on the same principle, but with right angles and edges, just made of wood - all subsequent steps will be applicable.

Here is what we need:

Step 1: Design

A smart flower pot will consist of two parts: a water tank at the bottom and an upper pot for a plant. In the bottom of the upper pot there are two holes through which the rope is let down, it gradually draws water from the lower tank, so that your plant receives a very small amount of water, but it is constantly. This is especially suitable for plants that do not need a lot of water, such as succulents.

The gap in the upper part of the pot will give you space to replenish the water and help you easily ensure that the water does not run out. The bottom compartment is large enough to prevent the plant from quickly absorbing all the water, so you don’t have to check the pot very often. If you want to make pots of the same shape as ours, you can download 3D files from this link.

Step 2: Molding

There are several ways you can create a form.

If you work with a tree, you naturally need to create a form into which you pour concrete, then pour concrete there and let it harden, and then remove the form.

If you want to make a very specific form, you will need to use a 3D printer. The difference with the 3D model is that we will not pour concrete into the mold. In the form, we first fill the silicone, and we will pour concrete into it. So we will have one additional step, but it will allow us to give our pot this bizarre shape. In addition, the silicone form can be used several times.

3D forms are not really a good form for casting, as they are rough, so for a start we smooth them with automotive primer and sandpaper. We definitely recommend using a sanding sponge, as it bends well, and if there are hard-to-reach areas in your pot, use a drill bit - it is very easy to make. After a couple of layers of primer and sanding, the shape should be fairly smooth.

Step 3: Form

As you already know, we have 2 printed models (upper pot and lower tank) and two forms that will be placed on top of each of them. These forms are needed to accommodate the silicone that will be poured on top of our 3D models. This will create an empty space in which the models are located, so when the silicone is ready, we will have a space in the shape of our models into which we pour concrete.

We will glue our model to the base of our form and fix it more firmly with tape. Use a lot of electrical tape!

We did these actions for the upper and lower parts, and when they dried, we removed the parts printed on the 3D printer, but it turned out to be difficult: we found that there was a hole in the form and it was stuck. For this hole, we mixed some more silicone and patched it up.

Step 4: Concrete

After preparing the mold, the step with concrete was very simple. We recommend using concrete with the lowest level of grit. Before starting work, place an unnecessary board on your work surface - this will protect your table and help you shake your pot shape in the future. Wear a mask and gloves (it doesn't matter if the concrete is on your hands, but we do not recommend you inhale the concrete dust).

Pour some water and pour two large scoops of concrete into the mixing container. Add a little water and add concrete until you have a mortar that resembles a mixture for pancakes. You can easily overdo it with water - to check, shake the container, and if the water starts to go over the solution, you need to pour more concrete.

In general, two or three minutes of mixing will be enough to get a uniform mixture. Then pour the solution into the silicone mold, slightly overfilling it, as the concrete will sit. “Shake” the form by striking its edges, or simply shaking the wooden board on which you take this step. After the air stops coming out of the concrete and it stops settling, you can go on.

After the concrete has dried (we left the mold alone for 24 hours), carefully remove the silicone mold and your concrete preparation is complete. If the form is still wet, allow it to dry on a surface that is not pathetic to get dirty, for example on the same wooden board.

Step 5: Grinding, Drilling, Sealing

When the concrete is completely dry, we sand it a little with a sanding sponge.

The next step is to make our pot self-replenishing. For this we need a synthetic rope. For drilling holes, we took the cue ball over a stone, the diameter of which was slightly larger than the diameter of the rope. In the bottom of the top of the pot, we made two holes.

Before we pass the rope, we soaked the concrete with two layers of insulating mortar - since this pot would contact the water and the ground with self-watering, we didn’t want something to be absorbed into the walls of our creation. We applied a small layer of insulating solution, let it dry for an hour, and then repeated the procedure. After 72 hours of final drying, water can be poured into the tank.

Then we pass the rope through the holes in the bottom of the pot and, so that the rope does not open, we melt its ends. Some of our friends have noticed that loose ends will help more moisture get into the pot, so decide for yourself - to solder them, or leave as is.

Step 6: Finished Result

We put a little bit of ground under the rope to increase the area of their contact when we plant the plants. You can see the finished result in the photos.

I tell you how to do any thing with step by step photos and video instructions.

How to keep moisture at the lowest cost

You can minimize the loss of moisture - it is not difficult to do. It is worth noting that this method should be applied only as a last resort, since it has much more minuses than positive sides.

  • it is good to moisten an earthen room by installing pots in a container with water for a day,
  • remove the pots from the windowsills in a shaded place. Everyone knows that the less light a plant receives, the slower it grows and develops. Due to this moisture will be consumed much less. This method has a big minus, delicate indoor flowers can die without sunlight,
  • thin out the plant by cutting off the leaves and buds, so the water will leave much less, but after such pruning the flower will restore its strength and decorative effect for a very long time,
  • make all the flowerpot in a large container at the bottom of which will be clay filled with water. For greater efficiency, you can lay wet material or peat in the seams between pots,
  • to arrange an improvised greenhouse for the plants, covering them with a film, but after a long stay in this design, the flowers may mold or just rot. In addition, it will take a lot of effort to adapt the surviving plants to stay outdoors.

As you can see, the minuses are significant.and if you want to preserve the beauty and decorativeness of indoor flowers, then it is worth considering more gentle methods of preserving moisture.

How to make a drip do-it-yourself watering

This simple and not expensive method which will allow to leave plants for a long time. To build it you will need empty plastic bottles with lids.

There are several holes in the cover. Pour into a bottle of water, tighten the cap and stick it in the ground next to the plant with the cap down.

Holes must be made in such a way that the water oozes out and does not overflow. The size of the bottle is chosen based on how large the flower is to be watered and for how long the plants are left unattended.

For a small pot, a bottle of half a liter will be enough, but for large pots it is better to take a capacity of 2 or more liters.

System wick

Easy to use and widely known irrigation system, which involves the use of a large container of water and homemade wicks. They can be any thread, twine, bandage, laces. One end is fixed with a wooden peg in a pot, the other is lowered into the water.

If you often leave home, You can install the wick during planting, passing it into the hole at the bottom of the pot. Only in this case, you should apply a synthetic cord for an improvised wick.

Before you start such an irrigation system, you need to test it - the water must flow into the ground at the right speed. It is easy to adjust, it is enough to properly install the water tank relative to the plant pots.

Hydrogel, granulated clay, balls

Auto-irrigation works well hydrogel or clay granules, which can be purchased at flower shops and soak with water. This material not only perfectly absorbs a large amount of moisture, but also gives it to plants when necessary.

To arrange this type of watering you need:

  • take a pot a little larger in volume than the one in which it was located
  • put clay or hydrogel on the bottom,
  • gently pull an earthen ball with the roots of the flower, trying to keep it from scattering,
  • put in a prepared pot
  • empty the sides with hydrogel and cover the soil with plastic wrap.

It is enough to spill the plant or put the pots in water for a while, and your flower will receive life-giving moisture for a long time.

Droppers

Another effective way to equip the automatic irrigation for indoor plants with their own hands - the use of medical droppers. For each pot is taken 1 dropper.

Manufacturing technology:

  • cut the needles, fasten the droppers to the desired length, hang the load on the ends,
  • fill the bucket with water and drop the ends with weighting,
  • set the free end into the pot and open the regulator to the desired state.

Colorful cones

These original products were invented in our country - water is poured into colored cones, then they are connected to a special leg, which is subsequently stuck into the ground next to the plant.

The advantages of this method of irrigation are as follows:

  • original and practical solution
  • aesthetically appealing look
  • no need to construct complex structures.

Industrial systems of autowatering

If you often have to go on long trips, then you can purchase an industrial system of automatic irrigation for indoor plants.

The most popular Aqua Globs, consisting of a glass flask and a ceramic cone.

The cone is placed in the ground, and the flask is connected to the water supply using a special hose.

Also known is the Gardena system, consisting of pumps, a timer, tubes. By purchasing such automatic watering you can provide moisture up to 36 flowers..

Flower pots with automatic watering

This cache has two bottoms between the first bottom and the second is the water tank. In this case, the lower watering is done, and the flower absorbs as much moisture as it needs, while the risk of overmoistening earthen coma is minimal.

  • the opportunity to have indoor plants for people who are often away,
  • a plant in such a pot does not need careful periodic watering,
  • saving time
  • excellent conditions for growing indoor plants, as it regulates the consumption of moisture.

The system of automatic watering built in pots is very convenient, but it has a drawback: the inability to use for young plants. The most basic condition for uninterrupted work is a well-formed and developed root system.

But recently “smart” pots have appeared on the market, which allow watering even young plants automatically.

Coubi Pots

Pots Ikea

These pots with an automatic irrigation system can provide indoor plants with moisture for 2 weeks. These are high-quality, low-cost products made from recycled material.

Flowerpots have various coloring so it is not difficult to pick up the necessary coloring.

A pot with automatic watering with their own hands

Due to the fact that buying pots equipped with an automatic watering system is very expensive, especially if you need a large number, you can independently build a similar system using the available materials.

Instructions for the manufacture of automatic polivalki with minimal cost:

  • cut a two-liter plastic bottle in half,
  • make small incisions - up to 3 cm at the bottom of the bottle. There should be 8 of them and bend them inside - these are holders for the second half of the bottle,
  • take a liter bottle and cut it in half. Make several holes in the bottom and stretch synthetic lacing through them,
  • plant an indoor plant in this makeshift pot,
  • place the flower in a pre-prepared water tank made from a 2 liter bottle.

Such an automatic watering system is able to provide the plant with moisture for a long time. In addition, you can make a more attractive system by taking two pots of different volume. Water is poured into a large pot and a smaller flowerpot is installed in which the flower is located.

In this video, another version of autowatering:

Appointment of pots with automatic watering

This invention first appeared in Denmark, and then gained worldwide distribution. This technology of growing flowers does not require much knowledge, effort and cost. With its use, you can grow almost any indoor plants at home.

The pots with automatic watering are made with the expectation that in the next two weeks you can forget about watering the indoor plants. Such a system also eliminates the risk of root system and soil overflow. Plants will absorb as much moisture as they need.

Today, various models of such pots are made, which differ in material production, color and design.

Pots with automatic watering by type of moisture are of two types:

  • Tanks with a standard volume of water.
  • Pots, where you can adjust the required amount of water, depending on the characteristics of the plant and its size.

Almost all models use the same instructions. The only requirements for the owner - self-regulation of water levels and fill the gap. The main thing is to set the level correctly, and follow its mark further.

The market now offers several types of wonderful pots.

Automatic bottle pouring

This type of auto-refill is the easiest; you will need one plastic bottle to make it. The volume is selected depending on the volume of the pot. For small flowers suitable capacity of 0.5 liters. It is done as follows:

Small holes are made in the lid, the intensity of irrigation will depend on their number and diameter.

Further in the bottle of water is drawn.

Then you need to place the top of the bottle in the ground.

Another option for autowatering

This polivrika is done quite simply, but has many drawbacks:

  • Constant watering
  • Unable to adjust the intensity.

Shoe lace

Automatic watering of flowers in pots, made through the laces works on the basis of the difference in capillary pressure. For the manufacture will need the following: a water tank with a volume of 1 l and several laces made of synthetic material. Made such polivalka for flowers as follows. One end of the lace is placed in a container with water, the other is fixed in the ground, for fixing, you can use wooden pegs.

The advantages of such polivalki is that it is possible to adjust the intensity of irrigation. To increase the intensity you need to install a container with water above the pot. And to reduce, on the contrary lower the capacity slightly lower. Also the advantage of such a system is that it is assembled within 5 minutes.

Watering sprinkler

Such a system is somewhat more complicated than the previous ones. For the assembly will need:

  • water tank
  • small pump
  • power supply, voltage depends on the pump selected,
  • timer with power on function,
  • two tubes for water supply.

Such polivalk as follows gathers. The pump is connected to the power source through a timer, after which it is necessary to connect the pump and the tank with one tube, and the other to be immersed in the ground. Thus, the timer will turn on the pump at the time you set.

The advantage of this system is that during the leaves the plants will be watered with a specified frequency. Such a device for watering is perfect for indoor flowers that do not tolerate excess moisture. The disadvantage of this device lies in the complexity of the Assembly and the relative high cost.

Drip sprinkler

The system of automatic watering of indoor plants with their own hands is also made from the usual medical dropper. To do this, fasten the ends of the droppers and place them on the bottom of the container with water; the ends must have their own weighting agent, since they must remain at the bottom. The amount of water depends on how many pots are watered, and for how long the plants remain unattended. Other ends must be placed in the ground. The water tank should be above the plant pots.

After everything is done, it remains to adjust the intensity of watering through the regulator. The dropper is great for watering almost any plant, as it is possible to adjust the intensity. Also, such a system provides a sufficiently long duration of irrigation, since drip irrigation is quite effective.

Hydrogel is also great for watering flowers. This substance is in the form of granules, which is able to absorb a large amount of water. And subsequently give it in small portions. You can buy it by visiting almost any flower shop.

Auto-watering of indoor plants with their own hands using hydrogel is done as follows. Pellets are poured into a prepared pot, after which the plant is transplanted into it. In this case, the hydrogel granules should be on all sides of the root. After this is done, the pot should be covered with a film in order to avoid moisture evaporation.

Capillary mats

Such devices are great for indoor plants, they are also able to provide long autonomous watering. A capillary mat made of a special substance that is capable of transmitting moisture through capillary pressure. They act as follows, the mat is spread on any surface and plants are placed on it. The other end of the mat is lowered into a container of water.

This irrigation system is quite effective in case there is a sufficiently large number of plants. But there are also disadvantages. For example, the use of capillary mats can cause root rot in some plants. Also, the cost of this device is high, relative to other methods of irrigation.

Many flower lovers can not afford to do what they love - growing green pets, due to the fact that there will be no one to take care of them during their absence. However, it is easy to solve this problem, it is enough to simply acquire an innovative pots with auto-levuza.

Combine the presence in the house of even the most capricious in the care of plant varieties and frequent absence is now possible. A smart flower pot at its best to take care of your green pets during your forced absence.

Principle of operation

Today, manufacturers are ready to offer potential customers pots with an automatic irrigation system in two trim levels: standard form and high form. The standard version is equipped with the following elements:

  • separation head,
  • watering hose
  • drainage substrate
  • water level gauge.

In addition to all this set, the high pots are equipped with a special plug-in container, the presence of which makes it possible to fill the flower pot with earth to the full depth.

At the planting stage, experts recommend installing an automatic watering system: hose, bottom, water level indicator. For high pots, elements must be installed in the plug-in container. In this case, the first layer, before the filling of the soil is a drainage substrate. The optimum thickness of this layer is about 1-1.5 cm. The drainage layer dispenses the amount of water that feeds the plant's root system. Further, the plant is planted in the ground by the standard method.

Note: the system of automatic watering begins to function after three months after planting. This time is enough for the root system to grow to the wetting zone and start to absorb water from the soil itself. Up to this point, the green pet must be taken care of independently, adhering to the watering schedule.

Further, after three months of hassle on caring for a green pet, you diminish. It will only be necessary to add water periodically to the tank, when the fill indicator indicates a minimum level. Mineral fertilizers that stimulate plant growth can also be added to the tank.

The capacity of the water tank can be different, its dimensions are directly proportional to the dimensions of the flowerpot. The largest unit includes a tank with a capacity of 26.5 liters. This amount of liquid is enough to make the plant feel great in your absence, even if it will be long (up to 12 months).

Pots and pots with automatic watering

As a result of this, an unpleasant odor appears, harmful microorganisms, etc. can be produced in the liquid.

Fix this situation is easy. To do this, simply unscrew the valve located on the bottom and rinse it thoroughly. Alternatively, to avoid "stagnation" of water when planting plants, you can use the granulant Ceramis, which neutralizes and completely eliminates this problem.

Characteristics of flowerpots

The lechuza pots are available to consumers in various sizes, colors and shapes. The combination of excellent performance and a presentable appearance make it possible to decorate an office or residential area, without disrupting the harmony of interior style.

Consider the main technical and operational characteristics of pots:

  • Resistant to ultraviolet rays.
  • Low weight, which greatly simplifies transportation.
  • Impact resistance. The product is made of durable plastic, however, the surface is susceptible to the effects of sharp objects, it is easily scratched.
  • Resistance to temperature fluctuations. However, it is not recommended to use the product outdoors during the period of frost, because the water in the tank will turn into ice, which in turn will lead to the death of the plant.

The lechuza planter - careful care for green pets, and in more detail how this system works, you can see in this video.

Pots with automatic watering - an experienced guide

What we want to see our indoor plants?

As in the picture in fashionable interiors: thick, blooming, in stylish pots. One of the ways to achieve this is a new direction - pots with automatic watering. The main advantages of such pots:

* Plants in them receive water and nutrients constantly and evenly, thereby increasing more dense, healthy foliage, bloom more abundantly.

* You can plant different plants in one pot, creating a mini-flower bed, floristic composition. In ordinary cultivation, plants often overwhelm each other, and in this case they complement each other.

* The variety of colors, shapes, textures, imitation of different materials allows you to harmoniously complement and complete any modern interior.

* Simple and convenient system of working with such pots makes it easy to care for non-professional plants, achieving excellent results. The window sill, the floor under these pots are always dry and clean, the excess watering does not leak out and does not form stains, which is also important.

What is the principle of pots with automatic irrigation?

The organization of the pots is simple - the lower part is designed for water, the nutrient solution, which rises through the soil capillaries to the upper part with soil and roots. In turn, the roots of the plant germinate in the lower part and feed from there. A layer of drainage material of various fractions is provided between the layer with water and the main earthen clod, which ensures respiration of the roots.

Thus, this simple principle can be realized with the help of bottom irrigation - when water is poured into the pan, or into the lower pot, and the upper pot has wide holes for root germination, as well as a reliable drainage layer on the two main pots.

There are also options with wick irrigation, when special cords are pulled between the layers so that moisture rises over them.

The most advanced options have special levels - floats, which suggest when it is time to water, as well as the bottom valve to drain water if necessary.

The main disadvantage of pots with automatic watering is the problem of water stagnation, in which the roots do not breathe, rot (you can not plant a plant in a pot without underflow, pots, and here). Different plants are sensitive to this in varying degrees, but the access of air through the soil is necessary for the absolute majority of indoor plants and not only for plants. But there are some simple rules, following which you can reduce this problem to nothing:

For growing plants with this method, it is important first of all to plant the plant correctly. A separating drainage layer is required - its thickness depends on the size of the plant, its type, type of pot, and usually takes 2-7 cm. This layer can be made of small claydite, vermiculite, expanded clay, moss. Best of all for these purposes are suitable mixtures of materials such as lezuza-pon, Ikea. Drainage poured into the bottom of the pot with holes.

Then we plant a plant with a ground. Soil should be chosen easier, more porous than with the usual method of cultivation, so that there is air access to the plant's lower roots. At the same time, plants without a pronounced stem - bushy, grassy ones are less sensitive to this factor, while plants with woody stems, palm trees and trees, need possibly more porous soil. For example, citrus fruits successfully grow in a pot with automatic irrigation only when mixing soil or a mixture for citrus fruits in half with drainage material (in this case it is not bad to add humus fertilizer granules to the mixture).

Producers say that the pot begins to “work” in 3 months, when the roots sprout from the lower layer, however, practice shows that even before this moment, the soil's properties to lift water through the capillaries gives a positive effect immediately.

Another important factor for the successful maintenance is the more or less complete drying of the soil between irrigations.

Before watering, the level float should be completely lowered, the top layer of soil 1-4 cm (depending on the size and type of plant) dry.

Cache pot with automatic watering for indoor plants

This provides a fairly high protection against the development of anaerobic putrefactive bacteria, and does not harm the plant at all.

After drying, watering is carried out to the maximum level of the float, and it does not really matter if it is watered under the root or directly into the water tank.

If there is too much water in the pot, or a decrease in temperature has occurred (for example, the cold season has come), and the plant has not consumed water or flooded it with precipitation in the open air, it is desirable to drain the excess water through the bottom opening, if it is provided, or over the edge. And after that, a few days the plant should also be dried without watering.

Also, plants can be bathed 2-3 times a year under a warm shower, as in the usual method of cultivation, while the soil is also useful to wash and spill, and drain the excess water and dry.

In such pots, we recommend replacing the top layer of the soil once a year, as a rule, nutrients are first of all washed out, and diseases and physiological waste accumulate. Thus, this is another way of natural cleansing and improving plant nutrition.

It is better to apply fertilizers and stimulants at each watering, in small doses, 1 / 3-1 / 4 of the recommended, diluting them in water, or adding to the lower container with water. Natural (humus, ash), granular fertilizers can be poured on top, loosening the soil, they will also be gradually and gradually consumed, regularly supplying the plant with the necessary nutrition.

These experienced recommendations will help achieve success and novice growers, and experienced collectors, allowing you to tame any, the most exotic and capricious plant.

A pot with automatic watering do-it-yourself

Many are faced with a situation where there is no one left to water the flowers during the holidays, so many are wondering how to make automatic watering of indoor plants. To solve this situation will help the automatic irrigation system. A pot with automatic watering can be done in several ways.

Pots with automatic watering: purpose and rules of use

Thus, the timer will turn on the pump at the time you set.

The advantage of this system is that during the leaves the plants will be watered with a specified frequency. Such a device for watering is perfect for indoor flowers that do not tolerate excess moisture. The disadvantage of this device lies in the complexity of the Assembly and the relative high cost.

How to use the automatic watering system?

  1. Immediately after transplantation, there is no need to fill the tank with water.
  2. Water is poured through a special hole according to up to MAX on the float.
  3. From now on, thanks to a special claydite, the peat mixture will evenly begin to pull moisture over itself through the holes in the bottom of the pot. Over time, the float will be lowered. How fast it goes down depends on several factors:
    • water tank size
    • how moisture-loving the plant is,
    • how well developed is the root system
    • what kind of lighting, temperature and humidity in the room,
    • from the time of year.
  4. When the float drops up to the MIN markdo not rush to pour water into the system again. This means that the water in the tank is over, but the soil is completely wet and it takes time for it to dry out. How quickly the soil dries out is hard to say:
    • Small pots dry faster than big ones.
    • Plants that stand in a well-lit place, dry out faster than plants in partial shade.
    • In summer, plants dry out faster than in winter.
