9 ways to organize automatic watering for indoor plants


If you do not have time to constantly water the plants, you can build a pot with automatic irrigation, and the plants will take care of themselves.

Flower pots with automatic watering will have a nice design, and the mold for its casting will be printed on a 3D printer. We understand that not everyone has access to such equipment, so you can make a pot on the same principle, but with right angles and edges, just made of wood - all subsequent steps will be applicable.

Here is what we need:

Step 1: Design

A smart flower pot will consist of two parts: a water tank at the bottom and an upper pot for a plant. In the bottom of the upper pot there are two holes through which the rope is let down, it gradually draws water from the lower tank, so that your plant receives a very small amount of water, but it is constantly. This is especially suitable for plants that do not need a lot of water, such as succulents.

The gap in the upper part of the pot will give you space to replenish the water and help you easily ensure that the water does not run out. The bottom compartment is large enough to prevent the plant from quickly absorbing all the water, so you don’t have to check the pot very often. Step 2: Molding

There are several ways you can create a form.

If you work with a tree, you naturally need to create a form into which you pour concrete, then pour concrete there and let it harden, and then remove the form.

If you want to make a very specific form, you will need to use a 3D printer. The difference with the 3D model is that we will not pour concrete into the mold. In the form, we first fill the silicone, and we will pour concrete into it. So we will have one additional step, but it will allow us to give our pot this bizarre shape. In addition, the silicone form can be used several times.

3D forms are not really a good form for casting, as they are rough, so for a start we smooth them with automotive primer and sandpaper. We definitely recommend using a sanding sponge, as it bends well, and if there are hard-to-reach areas in your pot, use a drill bit - it is very easy to make. After a couple of layers of primer and sanding, the shape should be fairly smooth.

Step 3: Form

As you already know, we have 2 printed models (upper pot and lower tank) and two forms that will be placed on top of each of them. These forms are needed to accommodate the silicone that will be poured on top of our 3D models. This will create an empty space in which the models are located, so when the silicone is ready, we will have a space in the shape of our models into which we pour concrete.

We will glue our model to the base of our form and fix it more firmly with tape. Use a lot of electrical tape!

We did these actions for the upper and lower parts, and when they dried, we removed the parts printed on the 3D printer, but it turned out to be difficult: we found that there was a hole in the form and it was stuck. For this hole, we mixed some more silicone and patched it up.

Step 4: Concrete

After preparing the mold, the step with concrete was very simple. We recommend using concrete with the lowest level of grit. Before starting work, place an unnecessary board on your work surface - this will protect your table and help you shake your pot shape in the future. Wear a mask and gloves (it doesn't matter if the concrete is on your hands, but we do not recommend you inhale the concrete dust).

Pour some water and pour two large scoops of concrete into the mixing container. Add a little water and add concrete until you have a mortar that resembles a mixture for pancakes. You can easily overdo it with water - to check, shake the container, and if the water starts to go over the solution, you need to pour more concrete.

In general, two or three minutes of mixing will be enough to get a uniform mixture. Then pour the solution into the silicone mold, slightly overfilling it, as the concrete will sit. “Shake” the form by striking its edges, or simply shaking the wooden board on which you take this step. After the air stops coming out of the concrete and it stops settling, you can go on.

After the concrete has dried (we left the mold alone for 24 hours), carefully remove the silicone mold and your concrete preparation is complete. If the form is still wet, allow it to dry on a surface that is not pathetic to get dirty, for example on the same wooden board.

Step 5: Grinding, Drilling, Sealing

When the concrete is completely dry, we sand it a little with a sanding sponge.

The next step is to make our pot self-replenishing. For this we need a synthetic rope. For drilling holes, we took the cue ball over a stone, the diameter of which was slightly larger than the diameter of the rope. In the bottom of the top of the pot, we made two holes.

Before we pass the rope, we soaked the concrete with two layers of insulating mortar - since this pot would contact the water and the ground with self-watering, we didn’t want something to be absorbed into the walls of our creation. We applied a small layer of insulating solution, let it dry for an hour, and then repeated the procedure. After 72 hours of final drying, water can be poured into the tank.

Then we pass the rope through the holes in the bottom of the pot and, so that the rope does not open, we melt its ends. Some of our friends have noticed that loose ends will help more moisture get into the pot, so decide for yourself - to solder them, or leave as is.

Step 6: Finished Result

How to keep moisture at the lowest cost

You can minimize the loss of moisture - it is not difficult to do. It is worth noting that this method should be applied only as a last resort, since it has much more minuses than positive sides.

  • it is good to moisten an earthen room by installing pots in a container with water for a day,
  • remove the pots from the windowsills in a shaded place. Everyone knows that the less light a plant receives, the slower it grows and develops. Due to this moisture will be consumed much less. This method has a big minus, delicate indoor flowers can die without sunlight,
  • thin out the plant by cutting off the leaves and buds, so the water will leave much less, but after such pruning the flower will restore its strength and decorative effect for a very long time,
  • make all the flowerpot in a large container at the bottom of which will be clay filled with water. For greater efficiency, you can lay wet material or peat in the seams between pots,
  • to arrange an improvised greenhouse for the plants, covering them with a film, but after a long stay in this design, the flowers may mold or just rot. In addition, it will take a lot of effort to adapt the surviving plants to stay outdoors.

As you can see, the minuses are significant.and if you want to preserve the beauty and decorativeness of indoor flowers, then it is worth considering more gentle methods of preserving moisture.

How to make a drip do-it-yourself watering

This simple and not expensive method which will allow to leave plants for a long time. To build it you will need empty plastic bottles with lids.

There are several holes in the cover. Pour into a bottle of water, tighten the cap and stick it in the ground next to the plant with the cap down.

Holes must be made in such a way that the water oozes out and does not overflow. The size of the bottle is chosen based on how large the flower is to be watered and for how long the plants are left unattended.

For a small pot, a bottle of half a liter will be enough, but for large pots it is better to take a capacity of 2 or more liters.

System wick

Easy to use and widely known irrigation system, which involves the use of a large container of water and homemade wicks. They can be any thread, twine, bandage, laces. One end is fixed with a wooden peg in a pot, the other is lowered into the water.

If you often leave home, You can install the wick during planting, passing it into the hole at the bottom of the pot. Only in this case, you should apply a synthetic cord for an improvised wick.

Before you start such an irrigation system, you need to test it - the water must flow into the ground at the right speed. It is easy to adjust, it is enough to properly install the water tank relative to the plant pots.

Hydrogel, granulated clay, balls

Auto-irrigation works well hydrogel or clay granules, which can be purchased at flower shops and soak with water. This material not only perfectly absorbs a large amount of moisture, but also gives it to plants when necessary.

To arrange this type of watering you need:

  • take a pot a little larger in volume than the one in which it was located
  • put clay or hydrogel on the bottom,
  • gently pull an earthen ball with the roots of the flower, trying to keep it from scattering,
  • put in a prepared pot
  • empty the sides with hydrogel and cover the soil with plastic wrap.

It is enough to spill the plant or put the pots in water for a while, and your flower will receive life-giving moisture for a long time.

What is the principle of pots with automatic irrigation?

Another important factor for the successful maintenance is the more or less complete drying of the soil between irrigations.

Before watering, the level float should be completely lowered, the top layer of soil 1-4 cm (depending on the size and type of plant) dry.
