How to pick a tomato

Some gardeners believe that picking does not create stress for transplanted seedlings. Others, on the contrary, speak of the need for picking to improve root growth and speed up fruiting.

In order for seedlings to germinate, a lot of land will not be needed, so small germination capacity is used. Be sure to do at the bottom of the tank holes to remove excess moisture and oxygen access to the roots.

Gradually, the seedlings become larger, the roots develop and occupy more space. In this case, the roots need more nutrients and a larger container size for normal plant development. Otherwise, it will begin to languish.

At this point, and spend picking seedlings in more spacious containers with openings at the bottom. The root system will continue to grow, become powerful, which affects the health of the whole plant.

Seedlings transplanted as the root system

How to dive tomato seedlings

In order to avoid damage to the roots, it is necessary to dive seedlings carefully. Transplant spend with a lump of earth. This method is also called transhipment, with its roots remain intact.

Saplings removed from the previous growth place and with a clod of earth are planted one by one in separate containers.

Transfer - a way to dive with a lump of earth

Time and procedure

The best time to transplant tomato seedlings comes when the plant appears first two true sheets. Approximate correct time for holding - for 7-10 day.

The first pair of leaves that appeared are not real leaves, they are so-called cotyledon leaves. After these two leaves begin to grow real.

The process has a number of features that should be adhered to in order not to harm fragile young saplings.

The best time for a dive is after the appearance of the first two upper leaflets.

Step-by-step process

When the first pair of leaves appears, the seedlings swoop.

The process consists of the following steps:

  1. Seedling preparation. Seedlings should be watered abundantly several hours before transplanting. This will soften the soil and minimize damage to the root system.
  2. Preparation of soil and container. The best option - plastic cups of 0.5 liters. Pour earth into cups, make 5 cm hollows. Water is poured into the hole.
  3. Transplant to new tank. Carefully remove the seedlings and immerse them in the recess in the new cup. Should be lowered to the cotyledon leaves. The ground around the plant is compacted.

After transplantation, plants need to acclimatize at a new location. Cups put on the day in a shaded place, sunlight is not desirable after picking.

Water about 1-2 times a week. Once the seedlings are strong, it must be exposed to sunlight.

Traditional way

Way when the seeds sown in total capacity and dive further in separate tanks, called traditional.

In this method, the saplings are separated one by one from the others growing in the same container, and transplanted into prepared cups. There is another way in which seeds are sown immediately in separate containers.

Transplanting sprouts germinating in separate containers

Pickup when grown in separate containers begin at the same time as with the traditional method. When the first true leaves appear.

At the bottom of the new tank, they make holes, cover the ground and make holes. Pre-watered seedlings are removed from the former containers with a clod of earth and placed in the wells. This method is more laborious, but also effective, because plants quickly get used to a new place.

A new land is needed for picking into another tank.

Features of transplanting sprawling seedlings

Sometimes seedlings can be pulled out, there can be many reasons: lack of sunlight, excessive watering, high temperature. Do not despair, fixing this will help pick the seedlings.

The pickling of the sprouted seedlings is the same as usual. With stretched thin seedlings need to be very careful. One awkward movement, and the sprout can break.

Stretched buried in the ground to cotyledon leaves. It is necessary to carefully lower the hole in the hole and fill it with earth, taking care not to damage the thin trunk of the seedling.

A further plan of action is the same as with a normal pick: put a container with saplings in shading, water as needed, after the seedlings have taken root, clean in a sunny place.

Avoid direct sunlight on seedlings, they can get burned.

After care

After picking, the plants need to feed. As a top dressing use urea, superphosphate. Top dressing bring in 10-14 days after a pick and again in 2-3 weeks later.

Be sure to water the plant after making feeding, otherwise the roots can get burned. After watering, the soil is loosened, which contributes to the saturation of the root system with oxygen, stimulates active and healthy growth of the plant.

Water seedlings about 2 times per week, but be sure to inspect the soil. If it is wet, you should stop watering, otherwise you can pour the tomatoes. The roots will start to rot, and the growth process will stop, the plant will look sluggish, the leaves will turn yellow.

Watering is done about 2 times a week.

A pick is an important process; if it is carried out incorrectly or out of time, a number of problems can be encountered.

For example, if a seedling root is badly damaged during a transplant, this provokes a developmental stop for a whole week, respectively, and the crop will ripen later.

If the pick starts too early, weak, weak shoots can be damaged during transplantation. Too late picking also slows down the process of acclimatization of the seedling.

Usually the procedure for diving seedlings occurs in April, although the time depends on the timing of sowing seeds and the climatic zone.

Thus, the picking is an important stage in the development tomato seedlings. If mistakes are made during transplantation, it is possible to provoke a slowdown in the development of seedlings or, if carelessly applied, damage the roots or the stem that has not yet become stronger, which will lead to the death of the plant.

Following the above steps, you can avoid mistakes, the seedlings will grow strong, and the root system is powerful.

What is the procedure and what is it done for?

A pick of tomatoes is a transplant, transfer of young plants from a small container, where they were grown from seeds, into a larger pot or container, which is pre-filled with fresh soil mixture.

The process of engraftment of transplanted plants is much better if you dive at an early stage of growth.

The most convenient way to do this is when two or three true leaves grow on the stem. Do not work on Fridays, Palm Sunday, on any holy day.

Those of the gardeners who welcome this procedure, trying to figure out how to properly dive seedlings, are looking for new ways that will help ensure her better survival. A lot of information can be gleaned from the video on the topic. After transplanting into pots, large in size, or special cups, the plants begin to develop a better root system, they grow stronger and become healthier.

When the sown seeds begin to germinate, and then the first leaflets form on the seedlings, they do not need a large amount of earth. During this period, it is much more important for them that the soil contains enough oxygen. Dive tomatoes gently, you can put them in cups with a capacity of 100 ml or special mini-pots, which provide holes in the bottom. Water during irrigation will not stagnate in them, since the excess of it will go through the holes. Tomato seedlings at the same time provide good access to oxygen in the soil. In extreme cases, temporarily dive tomatoes in packets with a small amount of earth.

At the next growth stage, the root system begins to rapidly develop in the plants. They need more space, nutrients are also required in considerable quantities. Small cups become cramped for them. The roots of plants grow, intertwine and even begin to protrude from the container - so they try to find the missing nutrients. If the seedlings have grown so large roots, it will dim and fall behind in growth. To eliminate such a situation, the area of nutrition for seedlings should be increased. They are transplanted into glasses or pots, the volume of which is about 0.5 liters.

It becomes clear that diving tomatoes is necessary in order to provide the sprouts with sufficient area for food. This gives plants an incentive to develop a strong root system, sufficient for the sprouts to be strong, healthy and give a good start to a rich harvest. A pick of tomato seedlings can give the expected result without any particular problems.

Some may be interested in the question, why not immediately plant the seeds in a container of considerable volume. The answer can be formulated as follows. In large containers or pots with drainage, everything is much worse. Excess water cannot flow into specially provided holes, and most of it remains in the soil. Just sprouted shoots receive less oxygen. They will not die because of this, but their growth will slow down significantly.

How is the sowing of seeds?

In order to seedlings after germination, they form even rows of greenery, they are sometimes distributed on toilet paper, sticking to it. After being placed in the ground, the paper gradually soaks, and the seed germinates. How to do this, you can look at the video.

When growing seedlings at home sowing of seeds produced as follows:

  1. For sowing, they prepare a soil mixture that is not rich in chemical composition. This may be peat, it is mixed with a small amount of ash (this reduces acidity).
  2. Seeds are placed densely and densely, the method with gluing seeds on toilet paper is unlikely to work here. If, nevertheless, you use this method for planting, try to place the seeds on toilet paper more tightly. Convenience in this is only the fact that when the strips are placed in the ground, then you get even rows of seedlings.

Remember that Palm Sunday should not be landing.

After getting the seedlings, they are seated so that they can get more nutrition, light, have a developed root system, be stronger. Only after plants reach the desired strength can they be planted in a greenhouse or soil. Diving tomatoes are not all cases - sometimes it is not worth doing. Detailed study of the process will help to avoid mistakes.

When picking is required

It is not enough to know how to swoop tomatoes - one must also understand when it becomes a necessity, and in what cases one can do without it. For example, on Palm Sunday, no work is required.

So, the procedure is necessary in the following cases:

  • when you are going to get seedlings with a strong root system, picking helps to better develop lateral roots,
  • if the seeds were initially sown not in separate small containers, but in a common container, diving tomato seedlings in this case helps to protect the roots from tight weaving, which in future facilitates planting seedlings on the ridge,
  • a dive is useful when more seeds unexpectedly come up than were expected when sowing (when making a procedure, only completely healthy seedlings are selected and excess is discarded)
  • if plants affected by the disease are marked, they are dived in order to protect the sprouts that have not had time to become infected (the causative agents of most of the diseases are in the soil, and its replacement can help save the tomatoes),
  • diving tomatoes helps to slow down the growth, if the seedlings are too stretched out - even an adult can be transplanted when it grows out (this helps to hold back the excessively rapid development).

In order to properly dive tomatoes, seedlings must first be shed with warm water. This is done a couple of hours before the procedure. So the process of extracting plants can be greatly facilitated. Tanks intended for planting, fill the prepared mixture of approximately 3/4. Then a hole is pushed into the soil with a finger - such that the root of the transplanted germ can fit entirely into it.

The seedling together with the earthy clod is taken from the former container. To do this, you can use a teaspoon, a toothpick, a pencil or a stick for sushi. When removing the sprout, hold the earthen ball or leaves. Hold the stalk should not be. After removing the spine freed from the ground.

In some cases, you can slightly pinch the main root, the one that is longer than all the others: it stimulates the growth of the side roots. After that, the seedling is placed in the prepared hole and sprinkled with earth. Crush the ground around with your fingers. If the seedlings are extended, you can deepen it to the cotyledon leaves.

When the picking is over, the seedlings of the tomatoes must be watered. If you do not know how to water the seedlings, which is quite small, you can put the cups in a pan with water and spray the plants. After the procedure, protect plants from bright light for several days. Before diving the sprawling tomato seedlings, keep it dry for several days.

This method has the following advantages: roots do not damage plants, adaptation takes place much faster, seedling development does not slow down. Tomato seedlings need to stop watering for two or three days before transplanting: it will be more convenient to remove the earthy clod. If the tank is large, it should be filled with about 1/3 of the earth.

Gradually, the whole procedure can be described as follows:

  1. Turn the glass with the stem of the plant upside down, while the ground part should be passed through the fingers. At the bottom you need to gently push and carefully remove the glass. After manipulation, the plant should be in the palm of your hand along with an earthy ball.
  2. After that, the plant together with the earth is placed in a pot.
  3. When voids are formed, they are covered with earth. Then spend abundant watering and placed in the shade for a couple of days to make it easier for the transplanted sprouts to adapt.

This method does not affect the development of the root system. It can also be used for transplantation of particularly capricious cultures. With the subsequent planting in the greenhouse, plants with natural, natural light and favorable conditions can bring a rich harvest.

Adding an article to a new collection

Tomato seedlings dive in the phase of two true leaves (usually 10-14 days after emergence). In order to not harm the seedlings, but rather to stimulate their growth, it is necessary to follow some rules.

It is important that seedlings do not outgrow. Tomatoes tolerate transplant well, so do not be afraid that small sprouts in a new container will not take root. Remember: it is better to pick out seedlings sooner than later. Tomatoes do not like closeness, so competently carried out a pick is for them to benefit.

How to dive tomatoes

1-2 days before the operation, watering of the seedlings is stopped. This is necessary so that the earth is not heavy, and the seedlings are easily removed from the ground without damaging the roots.

Sprouts gently pry with a teaspoon and, together with the earthy lump, are transferred from a common container to a new one with prepared soil mixture. At the same time, a hole is made in the ground in advance so deep that the stem of the seedling is completely in the ground.

The soil is poured almost to the seedbed leaves, and then compacted and watered with water at room temperature. In the same way transplant all healthy and strong seedlings.

For dispersed tomatoes, the same soil is suitable as for sowing seeds, but it is desirable to add complex mineral fertilizer at the rate of 1 tbsp to it. 5 liters of substrate.

Also, some gardeners successfully practice another way of transplanting tomatoes. An hour before picking seedlings watered. After this time, the contents of the container gently shake on the desktop. With the help of the sticks, the plants are separated, after which they are taken by the cotyledon leaves and planted in separate containers. The soil is tamped and watered from a spray bottle.

If several seeds sprout in separate cups, only one more robust seedling is left. In this case, the second one is not pulled out of the ground, but is neatly cut with scissors or plucked with fingers slightly above ground level.

If the remaining seedling has enough space in the container, you can not replant it yet. A seedling, which is crowded, together with a clod of earth, is transferred to a more spacious pot.

Some gardeners recommend pinching the central root a third of its length during a picking of tomatoes. However, this method has opponents who note that such seedlings after transplantation are stunted. If you adhere to the majority opinion, then the root should be pinned only when planting seedlings in a tank with a depth of more than 8 cm.

Care of tomatoes after picking

By the time of irrigation, the top layer of soil should be dry.

By the time the seedlings are planted in open ground or a greenhouse, the stems should be 1 cm thick, and the plant height should be about 30 cm. Each of them should have 8-9 leaves and one flower brush.

Timely and correct picking contributes to the better development of tomatoes and increases their productivity. However, some gardeners prefer to grow tomatoes at once in separate cups of 0.5 l without transferring to other containers. And you dive your seedlings?

The importance of the procedure

There is no consensus among gardeners about the need for it. Someone argues that picking is a prerequisite for the cultivation of excellent yield. Whereas other gardeners note that even a correctly conducted picking is stressful for plants, and this somewhat slows down their growth.

And yet, most gardeners recommend processing seedlings, which will allow you to grow strong and viable plants, which later will quickly and abundantly bear fruit. Gardener gets the opportunity to collect excellent yield when growing different varieties.

Pick detection

By picking tomatoes it is commonly understood to mean the removal of the lower part of the central taproot. Such processing of tomatoes guarantees the development of a large number of lateral roots, which improves the nutrition of seedlings, and the plants will be able to obtain the micro and macro elements they need from the soil, they will actively grow and bear fruit well.

Doing such work is not difficult, so even a novice gardener can handle it. Typically, seedlings dive once, but experienced gardeners advise for tall varieties to perform several transplants of seedlings in large containers, while shortening the root of young seedlings.

Performing a seedling pick allows you to achieve the following:

  • Selected healthy and strongest seedlings.
  • Removed weakened and damaged plants.
  • It creates optimal conditions for growth.

Important: the key to successful pinching is the correct definition of the execution time.

Best transplant time

The gardener needs to correctly determine the time of the pickling of seedlings of tomatoes, which will be the key to the success of this procedure. Many gardeners recommend doing it when two or three true leaves appear on seedlings. Usually the third leaf appears on the 10th day after germination. It is on the 10−15 day should be transplanted and pinching the root of the seedlings.

It is necessary to transplant the appeared seedlings into individual pots, at the same time pinch the lower part of the root. Immediately after this, seedlings will quickly grow., and under the condition of creating optimal conditions, the seedlings will quickly take root, gain the necessary strength, and in a short time they can be transplanted into the greenhouse for permanent residence.

The procedure itself picks seedlings is not very complicated. It is necessary to slightly moisten the soil in the pots with seedlings, after which you can proceed.

New packaging filled with prepared soil. Approximately 2/3 of the ground should be poured into the pot. In the center with a spatula, pencil or small sticks make a recess into which water is poured.

The seedling should be carefully removed from the old planting pot, and using a stationery knife or wooden spatula, carefully cut one third of the main root.

The seedling is placed in a groove made in a new pot, and gently sprinkled with earth. Immerse the seedling in the ground should be up to the cotyledonary leaves. The soil around the stem is subsequently compacted gently.

Important: With such a transplant, make sure that the roots of the seedling are not bent.

First of all, due attention should be paid to soil moisture. Digging up seedlings in dry soil can damage the lower root system of young plants, after which they will be sick for a long time, which will adversely affect their yields. The gardener will need to irrigate the ground about 5–6 hours prior to performing the pick, which will simplify the procedure.

Choose the right container for replanting. Immediately after the picking, numerous lateral processes will appear, and the volume of the root system will increase. Therefore, you need to choose the right amount of planting pot, which must fully comply with the size of the root system of plants. For picking should choose cups of certain materials:

The soil in which the tomatoes are planted, in its chemical composition should be identical to the soil where the seedlings had previously grown. To disinfect the land, it should be irrigated with phytosporin or potassium permanganate, which will subsequently avoid the occurrence of fungus and other infectious diseases.

It is recommended to touch the seedlings as rarely as possible when picking it. Carelessly grasping the stem, you can damage the delicate plants, and as a result, young seedlings just die. It is necessary to use cloth gloves, and when carrying it is necessary to touch the lump of earth on the root system.

Required tools

For the procedure, you can use the tools at hand with which you can dig up seedlings, trim the lower part of the root, and then carefully plant the plant in a new place. To perform the picking you will need the following devices:

  • Wooden spatula
  • Wooden peg or toothpick.
  • Stationery knife.

Tomato care

Gardener after picking necessary to provide seedlings appropriate care. The success of tomato cultivation and their yield indicators will depend on its accuracy.

Plants after picking need to adapt, so in the first days they do not recommend placing the container in bright light or watering the seedlings.

The first watering of pickled seedlings is recommended to resume on 4-5 days after their transplantation. It is best to perform irrigation twice a week with separated warm water..

Excellent results are obtained by fertilizing pickled seedlings, for which any complex fertilizer can be used. Experienced gardeners recommend performing two procedures:

  1. Two weeks after the picks.
  2. 15 days after the first feeding.

Important: The fertilizer used should contain sodium sulfate, superphosphate and urea.

Most experienced gardeners recommend picking up tomato seedlings, which will not only improve crop yields, but also speed up the beginning of the fruiting of grown vegetables. Now you know how to properly swoop tomatoes, and can easily improve yields.

What is a picking of tomato seedlings

The pickling of a tomato seedling is a procedure for its first transplant from a common container to individual pots. In some cases, it is carried out with the central (main) root broken off, in others, without it. Which option to choose - each gardener decides for himself.

As a result of picking by any of the selected methods, development of the lateral root system is activated, which contributes to the improvement of tomato growth.

Not always plants from a common pot are transplanted into separate ones. You can move the seedlings in one container - the main thing is to maintain the necessary distances between the seedlings of tomatoes to ensure its further full development.

Is it necessary to carry out a picking: arguments in favor of its implementation

Some gardeners have a negative attitude to the picking procedure, because they believe that it is the cause of strong stress for the seedlings. But in general, it will allow:

  • provide a comfortable growth environment for tomatoes,
  • sort the strongest sprouts and then reject the sick.

However, in most cases, the decision is made depending on how the seedlings were grown. After all, you can initially plant the seeds in separate jars or, for example, peat tablets, and the need for seating will disappear. Although even in this case, a picking procedure may be necessary - for example, if the originally used pot was taken in a small volume.

In general, the correct picking of tomatoes from a common container into a separate one will allow the roots of neighboring sprouts not to be confused with each other - it will be very difficult to divide such “tangles” during planting without damaging the root system of tomatoes.

If you plant seeds immediately in large pots, you can face such a problem as stagnant water in the soil. Because of this, oxygen will be bad to the roots, soil drainage will worsen, and, accordingly, these processes will negatively affect plants. So it is better to germinate seed in one common container first, and then pick it up.

To do everything the way it should, you should take into account the main aspects and picking rules that you should definitely study before starting work.

When and how to dive tomato seedlings

Correctly carried out procedure is a guarantee that the bushes of seedlings will be strong and fruitful, and will also take root in a new place after planting in open or closed ground.

Understanding when to begin picking tomatoes after germination is simple: just look at the condition of the seedlings and determine how many true leaves are formed. They must be at least 2-3 pieces. Usually the third leaf is formed in 10-15 days after the seed has germinated.

The pickling of tomato seedlings cannot be made at the moment when the seeds have only ascended, because at this time the roots of the plants are so weak that they simply cannot withstand such stress. Yes, and tiny plants a lot of space for development is not necessary. But the seedlings at the age of more than 15 days may already be interlaced with the roots of each other, so it is not necessary to violate the picking time of the seedlings - in this case it will be difficult to separate them.

In order for the first picking of a tomato to be as painless as possible, it is necessary to prepare seedlings for this procedure. Bushes well spill about 4-10 hours before it starts, but before that, watering stops for 1-2 days.

Immediately after moistening the soil, the pick is not done, since an excessively wet soil will be very heavy, and because of this, the tender stalks may break when removed from it. Dry soil should also not be, as it will easily peel off from the roots, leaving them unprotected. And the roots themselves in the dried state become too brittle and can be damaged.

The pots must be spacious enough for the root system to develop. The optimal volume is about 500 ml per plant. You can use special cups for seedlings made of plastic or paper, as well as peat pots. Sometimes it is easier to make the container yourself, simply by cutting plastic bottles to the desired volume. Drainage holes should be formed at the bottom.

If the plants are placed in a group in a more spacious common container, they are planted according to the scheme 8 * 8 for low-growing varieties and 10 * 10 for those that have long stems. Also, planting can be done in a staggered order, if the volume of the selected container allows, in which case the seedlings will be better lit.

As for the soil, then it is worth paying attention to its composition - it should be the same as the one in which the seeds were germinated. The main thing is to pre-sterilize the soil with a solution of potassium permanganate or Fitosporin.

For diving tomato seedlings, certain auxiliary tools may be required. This is a teaspoon, a small peg or a toothpick, a small spatula made of wood. They will help remove the seedling from the ground without damaging its roots.

Picks in the "diaper" of the film

Some seated bushes in the so-called "diaper". For picking polyethylene prepare rectangles of size 20 * 30 cm, on which a grade name is written with a marker and turned over.

In this case, picking up seedlings of tomato is done as follows: 1 tbsp is poured into the upper corner of the diaper. l soil mixture, where then prepared sprout is placed. In this case, the spine is not pinned. A spoonful of soil is poured in from above, and the diaper is wrapped. On the "diaper" is put on a gum for money. The resulting bags in dense rows are in the pallet, preferably the size of the size of the resulting bags.

When 4-5 leaves appear on the stalks, the paper bags unfold, another spoonful of soil is filled in them and wrapped again. Watering is usually made from a kettle, it is recommended to add feed in the water, as there is little soil as a source of nutrients.

This method well saves free space in the house and does not require the use of a large amount of soil. Gardeners also believe that some of the stress experienced by tomatoes causes them to bear fruit faster.

Transportation of plants to the landing site is made in the newspaper - each seedling is wrapped in it and placed in a box with a jack. Before transporting watering seedlings can not be within 2-3 days.

What to do with seedlings, if she stretched

If the seedlings are excessively extended, then working with it is more difficult, but nothing is impossible. Such sprouts dive as follows:

  1. about two hours before placing in a new pot, seedlings are removed from the ground. Due to this, the stems will become softer and more flexible.
  2. Further, when transplanting into a container, a part of a slightly stepped stem is placed in a pot in a spiral and sprinkled with soil. Over time, the roots will form on it, and the seedlings will become stronger.

Caring for seedlings after picking

After the procedure of picking seedlings, care is important, which will help her recover and cope with stress. The first 4-5 days it does not water. The optimal frequency of irrigation - 1-2 times in 7 days.

The temperature in the room where the seedlings are standing, the first days should be around 15-18 degrees, at night and around 20-23 degrees during the day. After 4-7 days, it can be lowered to 15-16 at night and 18-20 at daytime. Also in the room should be light.

After some time, the seedlings are fed complex fertilizers for better survival with a high content of superphosphate, urea and sodium sulfate. The first feeding is done 2 weeks after transplantation, the second - 14 days after the first fertilizer is applied.

How to dive tomato seedlings

A pick of a tomato is the transplanting of tomato seedlings after they grow and get strong enough. Picking tomato seedlings strengthens the roots of seedlings before their final transplant into the ground.

The optimal time for picking tomato seedlings when there are 2-3 true leaves. During the picking, the main root is damaged, so the lateral roots develop very well, which leads to the development of lateral roots. As a result, tomato seedlings grow more healthy. Pots are better to use paper or peat, so as not to damage the root when transplanting into open ground and not to break the coma of the earth.

Dive tomatoes correctly if the seedlings grow too thick. In this case, the plants do not have enough light and they are drawn out, the stem becomes thin. Another plus of the picks is that the root system is strengthened during transplantation. This concerns not only tomatoes, but any seedlings.

Tomatoes are the easiest way to swoop down and hold it very carefully so as not to damage the root system, especially the lateral roots.

But the main root needs to be pinned so that the lateral roots develop better.

When picking up seedlings, the tip of the main root is damaged, causing active branching - the formation of lateral roots. Consequently, the nutritional area of seedlings increases, which makes it possible to grow stronger healthy seedlings.

Also, a picking of tomato seedlings is carried out in order to delay the development of plants.

This is done in the event that tomato seedlings are already ready for planting in open ground, and the weather does not allow them to be planted. Too cold. From overgrowing seedlings saves picking tomato seedlings.

A pick of tomatoes is happening like this.

Prepare separate pots for seedlings and fill them with good soil, you can add a small handful of biohumus. Water the seedlings in the boxes before picking for the day, so that the soil is well saturated with moisture.

Using a toothpick or ice cream sticks, remove the plants along with a clod of earth. Usually, at this moment the central root breaks off by itself, so I don’t pinch it in addition. But if you see that the root is long, pinch off the tip. When transplanting tomato seedlings, you need to bury the plants almost to the most cotyledon leaves.

Picking a tomato seedling

To get a harvest on the envy of the neighbors, you need to be able to properly pick picking tomato seedlings. This should be done on time, because lost time or, on the contrary, early transplantation will not help growth, but on the contrary, it will slow down the development of seedlings.

Why do I need to pick a seedling?

Not everyone, but especially novice gardeners, understand why they are picking up tomato seedlings and how to do it properly if necessary.

This is required in order to give young seedlings a new powerful impetus for the development of the root system. Indeed, at a certain point, the nutritional value of the soil where the seeds were planted falls, the volume of the container is already insufficient for full branching of the roots, which means that it is time to improve the conditions for growing future tomatoes.

It is noticed that as soon as the plants changed their cramped apartment to a spacious house, the ground part literally becomes stronger, greener and healthier before our eyes. This means that the picking was carried out correctly, without damaging the root system and the seedlings received an excellent stimulus for intensive growth.

Proper picking of seedlings of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and flowers

The same is true of late transplantation. The root system has grown, the plants are intertwined with each other and injury is provided.

For undersized and average growth of tomatoes, one picking is laid, which should be carried out for 10-12 days, or as experienced gardeners will stipulate from the moment of the appearance of a pair of true leaves. If you miss this time, the roots get injured more.

The second pick of the seedlings of tomatoes is carried out for tall varieties, and it must be done three weeks after the first. Permissible deviations in one direction or another in 1-2 days, but no more.

Is it possible to grow tomato seedlings without picking?

Some of us remember how mothers or grandmothers grew seedlings on window sills in wooden boxes without any picks and planted adult plants in the garden, having an excellent harvest. Yes, it is possible to grow tomatoes in this way, but for this, they will need to be sown in rows sparsely, and to break through after emergence, leaving room for root development in width.

Picking rules for tomato seedlings

Before proceeding with the picking, it is necessary to carefully water the containers with the seedlings. But this should be done not just before the transplant, but the day before it. In this case, the soil will be moderately wet, and the roots will not come off while taking them out of the ground with a lump of soil.

In order not to damage the root system, it is necessary to seize as much land as possible. It will be convenient to do this with the help of a teaspoon or ice cream sticks. The capacity in which the plant is transplanted must be at least half a liter, if one transfer is planned. An appropriately sized hole is made in the ground, into which an earthen clod with roots falls. You should gently seal the soil around the plant with your fingers, without pressing too hard. After picking, the plants are watered the next day.

Tomato picking

Spring is coming, and along with it, such procedures as picking up seedlings are necessary for a gardener. Why do you need to dive young seedlings?

In order to make the root system of a future vegetable or flower more powerful, more branched, seedlings need to be seated in separate pots and this article will tell you how to do it correctly. What is a picking?

Strictly speaking, picking or diving is the removal of the final part of the taproot of a seedling in order to stimulate the branching of the root system. By tradition, this word refers to any seating of plants from common dishes to individual containers. For picks used pointed peg (in French - dive). Tomato seedling. ©

How to dive seedlings?

The sowing of seeds for seedlings is made in a weak and poor in chemical composition mixture, for example, peat, which is pre-mixed with a small amount of ash to reduce the acidity of the soil. Sowing is usually dense and dense, given that some seeds may not ascend or ascend, but will be weak.

When planting plants after sprouting, they need to be divided so that future seedlings receive more nutrient mixture and light, develop the root system and become stronger and more resistant. The effect of the pick on the root system of the plant: a - before pick, b - after pick picking weak, thin or yellowed seedlings are required, therefore, diving plants, immediately discard those that seem to you low-grade. In order not to damage the root system during the picking, it is necessary to use a special spatula, pencil, stick. Before picking, the plants should be plentifully watered and left for 20-30 minutes to make the soil softer and more pliable, then thin stems and roots will separate more easily and freely.

How to dive seedlings:

  • it is not recommended to keep the seedling with a spatula, holding it by the cotyledon leaves, to keep the plant leg, because the fragile stem breaks easily from the touch of hands, remove the plant from the soil, carefully cutting off the central rhizome (it is better to manicure scissors), leave only 2/3 whole rhizome, make a small depression in the pot, where the plant will be transplanted, bury it at the growth point (slight compaction above the rhizome) or 0.5 cm deeper, sprinkle with seedling, lightly press the layer, moderately water at room temperature and put in a dark room for 2-3 days.

How to swoop tomatoes?

If you like to tinker in the country, then you probably know the situation when a neighbor gets a good harvest, and you have everything that is stunted and green. It seems that you are doing everything right, and you are using good seedlings, and you are properly cultivating the land, and using fertilizers.

Still, the results are not encouraging. So maybe the reason is that you are not doing the picks? Let's figure it out!

A bit of theory In the general case, picking is understood to mean transplanting seedlings (in our case, tomatoes) into larger containers, often with shortening the main root by one third. Why do you need it? It's simple.

The picking contributes to greater efficiency in the use of cultivated areas (saving the area of the greenhouse or window seat), and also saves money when buying seeds and heating, which significantly reduces costs per 1 sq.m. protected ground. Even picking allows you to get stronger, larger, healthier and more resistant seedlings, it contributes to the development of a healthy root system in the plant, which ultimately gives an excellent harvest.

Here, however, it is worth noting that there is no consensus about the need for picks among gardeners. Some argue that it is not necessary if the seedlings are planted in separate large cups.

But most often they say so, those who simply do not have enough time for such a procedure, or just laziness. Most gardeners agree that picking is an extremely useful event. When dive tomatoes?

It is believed that the best time is when the first true leaves appear on the seedlings (usually 3-4). Most often this occurs after 12 days from the time of landing.

An earlier (or, on the contrary, late) picking will bring nothing but harm: tomatoes will not take root well and will often hurt. How to dive tomatoes?Pickup procedureA pick consists of several stages and with due diligence is completely simple:

  • Two hours before the start, water the seedlings in containers. If possible, do not touch the stem and leaves, as the temperature of your hands greatly exceeds the comfortable temperature for seedlings. And even better - take a rag gloves. We prepare pots of a small size and stock up on the ground (in our case, a mixture of sod earth, peat and sand) with a temperature of about 20 degrees. Potted earth is watered with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Most carefully get our seedlings out of the ground. You can use a small wooden spatula or a toothpick. If the root is long, cut it about one third. In the prepared pot with the earth we make a small hole about 5 cm deep. Pour water into the hole. We transplant our seedling, making sure that the cotyledon leaves are underground. Fill the hole with the plant with earth and slightly compacted with your fingers.

Then we rearrange our pot in a sunny place and water it. We do not forget to periodically air the room where our saplings are located, and the optimum temperature in it should be 15-18 degrees.

After picking, it is recommended to support the plants and fertilize. Any mineral complex fertilizers with a high content of superphosphates, urea and sodium sulfate will do. The recommended timeframe is 10-15 days and 4-5 weeks after picking.

In the end, after simple and easy actions, you will get tomato seedlings with a strong root system - the key to a good harvest in the future. Very soon you will be able to enjoy a great harvest of healthy tomatoes.

Today let's talk about such an important moment as picking tomatoes. Why pick it up? How to prepare the soil for seedlings? I wrote in the articles “Growing seedlings - picking and hardening.” And “Do you have ready soil for seedlings?” You sowed tomatoes in boxes for seedlings with soil treated for diseases and pests.

The seeds were also cultivated with something, germinated, and maybe just so that they were sown and dried untreated. It is better if you sowed seeds not through a round-up, but with grooves: the seed from the seed is quite close, but the groove from the groove is centimeters through 5. The first time diving tomatoeswhen the first two cotyledon leaves develop well on plants and the real one begins to emerge.

It is impossible to grow good seedlings without picking. For several hours before picking, the seedlings are well watered so that it is saturated with water and is strong and elastic. Dive into the box with earth, also treated against diseases and pests.

Each plant is removed from the roots and transplanted into a separate hole of the new box. If a new box is deeper than 8 cm, the tip of the main root of each plant must be pinned so that it does not lengthen, but give lateral processes. If the box is shallow, you can not pinch the spine.

He himself will stop growing, hitting the bottom. When picking, plants are planted 6–8 centimeters apart. For the stem is better not to take, take only the leaves. The stem can be easily damaged, and if the leaflet is damaged, the plant will not die.

The depth of planting seedlings when picking is up to the leaves. But carefully consider the center, where a new leaf begins to develop. This point cannot be filled up. Immediately after picking, the plants need to be watered.

By this, you not only moisten the ground, but also compact it, each lump will cling to delicate root hairs and the injured plant will master the new soil more quickly. Without watering, even well-watered in fairly moist soil, some plants may die. Tomatoes usually require two picks.

The next picking tomatoes will be when two true leaves develop well. Again you will bury them to the leaves, but to replant them already either in separate pots, or at a distance of 15 centimeters from each other.

Only by buried the stem of a plant twice when growing seedlings, you will grow it healthy and strong. So, it would be good to make a second pick in the greenhouses. There she will have enough space, warmth, and light, and you don’t torment her on your tiny darkened window-sills, with dry air, a completely inappropriate microclimate. I almost forgot - it’s desirable to coordinate these works with the dates on the lunar calendar.

Tomato seedling dive

The pickling of tomato seedlings is an important event, since a carelessly held pick often leads to a delay in the development of tomatoes for a whole week. And it is necessary to carry out the picking after the first real leaflet is well formed between the first, so-called cotyledon leaves and the second one.

Tomato plants reach this state approximately at the age of 10–15 days from shoots, although this is all quite individual. With an earlier picking, the plant is still very vulnerable and weak, and with a later picking, the roots of the plants are strongly intertwined, and with a picking, they can be badly damaged.

Therefore, the optimum age of the seedlings for picking remains within two weeks of shoots. How seedlings dive and in what capacity - depends largely on your capabilities.

The more free and illuminated area for growing seedlings, the greater the capacity you can take the container. It is important to take into account which varieties of tomatoes are spiked, and after how much time there will be transplanting to a permanent place ... In general, a container for 100-150 ml will be suitable for the beginning, better square pots.

Later it will be possible to transplant into large pots, and in such pots, tomatoes can grow quite comfortably for two, maximum three weeks, but care must be taken, since in a small volume a growth of plants can occur. In order not to miss such a moment, it is advisable to plant several plants in full-fledged half-liter or liter pots, and if plants in small pots start to lag behind in growth, then the period of the next transplant is almost over.

But if there is a lot of space on the windows, then you can immediately transplant the seedlings into large pots. In this case, a problem may arise - fungi can develop strongly in an earthen coma not covered by roots, although later, when the roots have mastered the entire volume of the pot, this problem disappears. Before picking a plant, it is best to water it for a day or a couple of days, and if you water it the same day then the earth will be heavy and lifting the plant for the stem, the earthy lump can tear off and tear several valuable roots with it, and if you don’t water it for a long time, the earth will be dry and almost completely crumble from the roots, which become bare, which again leads to their increased rheumatism during landing.

Therefore, ideally, each dived plant should have an earthen ball on its roots, at least half-phalanx in size. Then the picking will take place as painlessly as possible and the plant will immediately start growing. From the common plate, tomatoes are extracted using a toothpick.

The ground is gently picked up by a toothpick and the plant is separated from the common earthen coma, while the green part of the plant should be pawed as little as possible - try to operate with a piece of earthen coma around the root, and not with the plant itself. Do I need to pinch the central spine?

Practice shows that this is completely superfluous, since during the picking the top of the spine itself is damaged. And only if from the general lump sticking out too long thin root - then pinch it carefully, maximum 1/3 of the root length. When picking, the transplanted tomato plant is immersed in the soil almost to the most cotyledon leaves, so that more roots will be formed on the stem in the ground.

Advertising: It is necessary to grow tomatoes for this, the soil must be prepared.

Transplanting pickling tomato tomato seedlings

Do not worry, this time plant overgrown. And while we do a picking! (Note. Last time I began to grow seedlings without picking, every bush in my little pot at once. Link).

Picking is a responsible matter! Inaccurate picking may delay the development of tomatoes for a week. And you shouldn't wave your hand (Chu! Just think - a week!), Because every week of the delay is an unfinished brush of the tomato crop! So - when?

When to plant tomatoes in separate pots? According to tomato canons, this is done in the stage of the appearance of the first true leaves.

Often, for some reason, they write “in the stage of the appearance of the first true leaf,” although I somehow did not meet tomatoes in which only one real leaf appears, the first two always go together. But I, as usual, distracted.

The first true leaves begin to appear within 5-7 days after germination, but it is better to wait another day or two, because at the age of five days the stem of young tomatoes is very delicate and can be easily damaged during transplantation. Thus, I prefer to dive tomatoes at the age of 7-10 days from shoots, although everything is individual - some manage to wipe out like elephants in 10 days, and they would have to be transplanted earlier.

Below in the photo "The Miracle of the Earth", which is just 10 days old, and how can we see its root is already 17 centimeters. Can I swoop at another time - later or earlier? Sure you may.

But at an earlier age, a tomato has only one small root, and if it is damaged during transplantation, then it will have to spend quite a lot of time and effort to restore the tiny root system. And if transplanted at a later date, another problem happens - usually the tomatoes are sown fairly densely, and at the age of three weeks and later the roots of the plants will be strongly intertwined, and again, when diving, they will be badly damaged.

Therefore, the optimum age of the seedlings for picking remains in the interval of 10-15 days from germination. How do they dive? In general, there is no special wisdom here. I'll tell you about my version, but I do not insist that it is the only correct one.

I currently have sill area problemtherefore, I cannot seat all the seedlings at once in full-liter or larger containers - I simply have nowhere to put so many large pots. I sit down in large pots later, when it is quite warm outside and the seedlings move to the open balcony.

Therefore, I first transplant plants in 100-150 ml. square pots. In such pots, tomatoes can comfortably grow for a couple more weeks, but you have to watch - in a small volume you can not notice the suspension of plant growth, so in my case I always plant several plants in full half-liter or liter pots, and if plants in small pots have started lagging behind in growth means I have already clicked the time for the next transplant.

If you have a lot of space on the windows, you can immediately transplant into large pots, but this also has its minus - in the earthy coma that is not covered by roots, fungi can develop (not necessarily pathogenic), or the earth can "sour." Later, when the roots master the entire volume of the pot, such problems do not arise. But again I was distracted.

For the growing seedlings, I add a pinch of superphosphate and a small handful of biohumus from under earthworms (sold in bags) to the purchased tested soil for seedlings, it is also good to add a pinch of potassium sulfate. (Do not confuse a pinch with a handful) It is best to water the plants before picking for a day or a couple of days, because if you water on the same day, the ground will be heavy and lifting the plant by the stalk, the earthy lump can tear off and tear off several precious roots and if you don’t water it for a long time, the ground will be dry and greatly crumbling from the roots, the roots remain “bare” and again damaged during planting. Ideally, each diving plant should have an earthen clod (lump rather) the size of a half-phalanx of a little finger though would. Then the picking will go painlessly and the plant will immediately begin to grow. In the photo - Masha tomatoes, 6 days old from germination.

It would be possible to wait another 1-2 days, but it is still possible to swoop down. I use tomatoes and toothpicks from a common bowl. The earth gently breaks under the toothpick and the plant is separated from the common earthen coma, while the green part of the plant should be pawed as little as possible - try to operate with a piece of earthen coma around the spine, and not with the plant itself. Should you pinch the central root?

For me, this is completely superfluous, even more likely harmful - during a picking, the spine itself is damaged in 90% of cases, at the age of 2 weeks it has a very thin tip, almost invisible .. and it will most likely be lost during transplantation. But such a loss to the plant is harmful. VISIBLE will not go.

And if, according to the recommendations, to pinch 1/3 of the root, then this is already quite a traumatic operation, the tomato will again lose up to a week to restore the root system. Tomatoes grow deeper during the pick almost to the very seed leaves. Although they later stretch to the optimal length of the stem, but in the ground there will be more roots.

Why is tomato seedlings drawn out?

If a tomato seedling has stretched, then there is no need to blame the variety and look for justifying explanations, the reason is trivial - the hostess has overlooked (or overlooked). Many will be surprised: “And what could the mistress do wrong?” It turns out - the most important thing. Here are two basic rules to ensure that tomato seedlings do not stretch out.

  1. Shine. Nature has thought through all its mechanisms to the smallest nuances. Natural plant behavior: not enough light - reach for it. Therefore, planting tomatoes in boxes, do not be greedy. No need to try to stuff in one box as much as possible. It is better to have fewer bushes, but they will be healthy and strong. These seedlings will give much more fruit than frail stunted sprouts grown in cramped. Yes, and you will agree, it is better to care for 20 bushes, well-fructifying than 50, giving the same amount of harvest.
  2. Extra care. It can also harm your seedlings well. After all, if young tomatoes are excessively watered and fertilized, they will grow too quickly and begin to reach up.

How to swoop tomatoes: photos, videos, dates, step by step instructions

As a result, there will be a problem with stretching. Remember the main thing: tomato seedlings need to be watered only when you see that the earth is dry.

How to avoid pulling, you now know. It remains to tell you what to do if this happened.

1 way. When planting seedlings in the ground, it is necessary to deepen the stems. But this does not mean that you need to dig deep holes (the ground below can still be cold and not warmed up after winter), it is enough just to learn to plant it “on slope”. First of all, form grooves with a depth of 8-10 cm, pour water and wait until it is completely absorbed. After spreading the plants along the furrow so that the top of one bush is not closer to the other top than 50 cm away. A little trick: put the roots to the south, so the plant will straighten up, straightening in the direction of the sun.

2 way. Strongly overgrown tomato seedlings can be divided into two parts. To do this, all that is above the 5-6 sheet must be cut and put in a jar of water. About a week later, roots will appear on the cut tops. When they reach 1-1.5 cm, the resulting seedlings can be transplanted into boxes or pots. This method will allow you to get additional seedlings, the new half of which will be formed in one stem.

Now let's talk about what to do with the lower part, from which pruning was done. Soon on the trimmed bushes appear stepchildren. We give them to grow by 5 cm and, leaving only the top 2, all the bottom cut off. Consider the main thing. Cutting of stepsons should be carried out not earlier and not later than 20-25 days before disembarking seedlings in open ground.

3 way. Here we look at the situation when the seedlings not only stretched out, but also changed their healthy green color to a pale green one. Both of these signs suggest that your seedlings lack nitrogen. Naturally, it is necessary to feed it. To do this correctly, you need to dilute 1 large spoonful of urea with 10 liters of water and pour the seedlings thoroughly with the liquid. Then for several days we remove containers with tomatoes in a cool room (8-10 degrees C). As a result of such actions, the seedlings will begin to acquire a good green color and even slightly stop growing.
