Plant description

Adonis - This is a perennial plant of the buttercup family, herbaceous, wild-growing, about 50 centimeters high. Rhizome short, yellow. Adonis has several erect stems, densely covered with leaves, with sprigs pressed to it. The leaves along the contour are broadly loop-like, finger-dissected, narrow segmented, linear, with a solid edge. Flowers solitary, with the number of petals from 10 to 20, bright yellow. The fruit is multi-tapping. In addition to the spring adonis, Adonis is a Turkestan, equivalent in biological action to spring, Amursky's adonis - with greater biological activity, Golden Adonis - the raw material of this species is the root with rhizome. It blooms from April to May.

Adonis grows in the steppes among raznotravya, on forest edges in the forest-steppes of Ukraine, it is found in the Crimea, central Russia, in the Caucasus, in Western Siberia.

Harvest adonis spring

Adonis grass harvested from the beginning of flowering and until the period of shedding of seeds, using when cutting with a knife or sickle. If the grass is torn off with your hands, you can tear out the plant along with the root or damage it, while the rhizome dries out and the plant dies. Be sure to leave when collecting part of the plants to update the thickets. Adonis is a difficult-to-cultivate plant, therefore it is necessary to treat it carefully when preparing medicinal raw materials. The frequency of harvesting on one site is 3-4 years, if you do not comply with these terms, you can completely destroy the Adonis thickets.

Drying grass should occur quickly at a temperature of 50-60 degrees or slowly at a temperature of 20 degrees. The temperature depends on which cardiac glycosides need to be extracted from the raw material in the future. 1 gram of properly harvested grass contains 50-60 ICE (units of action of the biologically active substance). Since the plant is poisonous, storage of raw materials is carried out according to list B.

Chemical composition

Adonis grass contains 0.7% of cardiac glycosides: adonitoxin, K-strophanthin-b, cymarin, and other cardiac glycosides. In addition, flavonoids and saponins were found, coumarins in the rhizome. Adonis glycosides are similar in action to digitalis and strophanthus glycosides, but have less activity and are not cumulated in the human body.

Useful properties of adonis

Preparations from medicinal raw materials of adonis due to its chemical composition have a positive effect on the following systems of the body:

- cardiovascular system - they are used in the treatment of coronary heart disease, drugs increase the contractile function of the heart muscle, affect the heart rate,

- central nervous system - have a calming effect,

Adonis can be propagated by seed or division of rhizomes, but both methods are very complex, since adonis is very sensitive to changes in soil quality, grows slowly and responds to any changes. It is best to transplant plants with a clod of earth, so as not to disturb the roots. Adonis seeds have low germination, some of them germinate one year after sowing.

Interesting Facts

The beautiful Greek myth about the love of the goddess Aphrodite and the mortal man - Adonis, the son of the king of Cyprus, is associated with Adonis. Together they hunted, spent a lot of time, Aphrodite sometimes forgot about her divine origin. Once during another hunt, a huge wild boar mortally wounded Adonis. Aphrodite mourned her beloved for a long time and, in memory of him, raised flowers from her blood drops. Zeus regretted Aphrodite and, on his orders, Hades every year began to release Adonis from the realm of the dead for a while so that lovers could meet. And when Adonis comes to the earth with the rays of the spring sun, the beautiful flower named after him also blossoms.

What is adonis, description, photo

Starodoubka, the adonis spring of the buttercup family, got its scientific name from a mythological young man named Adonis, who was transformed posthumously by the goddess Aphrodite into one of the most beautiful colors of the planet. Aphrodite's beloved on the hunt killed a huge boar, the goddess could not survive the fact that he did not heed her warnings and went into the woods without her, in the place of the death of a handsome young man flowers (blooming) bloomed in color.

There is an alternative version of the origin of the name of this flower, as if it comes from the Phoenician sun god Adon, who is resurrecting every spring.

With the onset of spring, somewhere in early April, in the steppe, among the meadows, on the slopes of the hills begins to bloom amazing, beauty and healing properties - adonis spring adonis (see photo of the flower), which occupies a prominent place in the ancient health recipes of the Slavs.

The perennial medicinal plant Adonis vernalis grows up to 50-60 cm high, the root of which does not die off, but gives each year new shoots, the flowers are yellow, the leaves are similar in shape to dill.

All parts of the plant are poisonous, so when applying it is extremely important to respect the dosages.

According to the nature of the medicinal effect, the spring adonis glycosides are similar to the cardiac glycosides of digitalis, but in comparison with them they do not accumulate in the body, they are also less active and do not produce such a long-lasting effect.

Harvesting, how and where does Adonis grass grow

Preparation of raw materials is carried out with Adonis flowering phase before seeds appear (June). Cut off the top of the stem. Cut grass is placed on the canvas. Dried in attics, in the dryer. The best preservation of adonis glycosides is quick drying. The color of the dried raw material is green and the color of adonis flowers is yellow. Stored for 1 year without loss of healing qualities.

As a pharmacy raw material, adonis is grown in the North Caucasus, the Urals, in the Volga region, Bashkiria, the Novosibirsk and Kemerovo regions, and was previously actively grown in the Republic of Belarus and Ukraine.

In the wild form it is found in nature in the Crimea, Western Siberia, but less and less, the Red Book speaks of Adonis as a disappearing form. In Europe - Germany, Switzerland, it is almost impossible to meet.

The extinction is caused by the barbaric way of collecting plants, since the adonis reproduces mainly by rhizomes, pulling out the grass from the root, naturally, leads to the destruction of the species. In principle, seed reproduction is still possible, but seed germination is rather low (usually less than 30%), and it takes at least 4 years from the appearance of capricious shoots to the accumulation of useful therapeutic properties in the grass of adonis.

If the Adonis plant has taken root normally on your site, it will delight you for many years (the adonis from the family of long-livers can live and develop 100-150 years under favorable conditions).

Rhizomes are planted in moist soil in autumn or early spring. Freshly harvested mature seeds are sown in summer (June — July), sinking them 1.5–2 cm deep into the soil.

The rhizome of Adonis spring dark brown color, vertical, shortened, thick (up to 4 cm in diameter), with a large number of cord-shaped roots.

Plant stems are erect, rounded in cross-sectional shape. At the base they are bare, covered with rare lower leaves in the form of membranous flakes of brown color. At the beginning of Adonis flowering, the height of all the stems does not exceed 20 cm, then gradually the central stem is extended and branched, and the branches exceed the central stem in length. During the fruiting period, the plant reaches a maximum height of 40 - 50 cm.

The leaves, located at the bottom of the stem, have scapes, and closer to the top - sessile. The lamina is broadly ovoid in shape, finger-divided into narrow linear, entire, pointed at the apex of a lobe 1–2 cm long and not more than 1 mm wide.

According to another version, the plant was named in honor of the young Phoenician god Adon, personifying the annual dying and revitalization of nature.

Preparation of raw materials

As a medicinal raw material harvested spring adonis herb. It is cut with a sickle just above the basal scale-like leaves at a distance of about 10 cm from the level of the soil, trying not to cause harm to the root system. The collection is carried out in the period from the end of flowering to the beginning of the fall of the fruit. Considering that the adonis from seeds grows very slowly and it takes years to get full-aged plants suitable for harvesting, in the same places it can be harvested at intervals of 4 to 5 years.

Drying collected adonis spring grass is carried out in dryers at a temperature of about 50 ° C or in the shade under a canopy in the air, since finding the raw material in direct sunlight can lead to a decrease in its biological activity. Raw materials are considered to be completely dried when the thick stems of a plant break easily.

It is possible to store dried grass for not more than 3 years in a well-ventilated dry room in small bags or cardboard boxes in a dark place, away from other herbs.

Warning: When harvesting raw materials, it is necessary to leave part of the plants intact, it is strictly forbidden to uproot them. As a result of improper collection, the plant is on the verge of extinction. On the territory of Russia, spring adonis is listed in the Red Book.
