Juniper rocky Skyrocket (Juniper scopulorum Skyrocket): description, fit and care

Juniper virgin Skyrocket ’, description, photo, growing conditions, care

Juniperus virginiana ‘Skyrocket’

Juniper virginsky, "pencil tree" (J. virginiana). Slender, upright large shrub or small tree from 7 to 12 m tall and 4 to 6 m wide. The form of this type of juniper depends on the variety. Initially, the plant is compact and conical, then becomes wider, asymmetric and openwork. Branches of juniper virginsky bent up. The average growth rate is 20-25 cm per year. The berries are bluish-white with a bluish bloom. The needles of juniper virginsky usually scaly (needle-shaped in the shadow), rich dark or gray-green, in winter it becomes dark red.

The root system is pivotal, sensitive. Juniper virginsky grows only in the sun, endures high temperatures, winter-hardy, drought-resistant and wind-resistant. Easy to adapt. The juniper virginian soil prefers fresh light clay, loamy limestone and sandy. Juniper virginsky brings a haircut and is suitable for topiarnogo art. Old free-growing plants are distinguished by their picturesque crown shape.

Juniper virginsky ‘Skyrocket’ is a dense column-like shrub in height from 5 to 8 m and width from 0.5 to 1 m. The needles are scaly, gray-green or bluish-green. Juniper rocky ‘Skyrocket’ does not tolerate shade, it grows only in the sun. The juniper rocky ‘Skyrocket’ has a very deep root system, therefore it is resistant to wind gusts. The bush is frost-resistant, drought-resistant, tolerates high temperatures. Juniper ‘Skyrocket’ grows on any well-drained soil.

Life form. Coniferous shrub

Crown. Colonic, narrow, dense.

Growth rate. Fast. The annual increase is 20 cm in height and 5 cm in width.

The height of the Juniper Virginia ‘Skyrocket’ can reach 8 m. The diameter of the crown is 1 m.

Durability: 200 years

Fruits: Cones, rounded, gray.

Needles: Bowl or needle, meek, sharp, bluish-gray.

Decorative. All year round the shape of the crown and the color of the needles.

Use: Single landing, decorative groups, hedges.

to moisture: drought-resistant, does not tolerate stagnant moisture

to soil: not demanding

temperature: frost resistant

Homeland: North America, North Africa.

Growing conditions, care. Juniper Virginia ‘Skyrocket’

Planting and care: Juniper

Landing features: Juniper virgin ‘Skyrocket’ should be planted in sunny places. In the shade it grows loose and loses its decorative appearance, but the Common juniper tolerates some shading.

Root neck at ground level. If the groundwater is close, drainage is necessary, consisting of crushed stone with a layer of 10-20 cm.

Soil mix: Peat, sod land, sand - 2: 1: 1.

The ratio may vary. Some species respond positively to liming and grow better on clay soils.

To soil fertility, all junipers are of little need.

Optimum acidity - pH 4.5 - 6.5

Top dressing: In April-May a nitroammofosk (30-40 g) is applied.

Watering: After planting - 20 liters per plant. The dry juniper and Cossack ordinary suffer badly. Others are drought-resistant, but grow better on soils of medium moisture content.

In dry summers, watering (2-3 times per season) and spraying is recommended: once a week in the evening. Young plants in the dry period require more frequent and abundant watering.

Loosening: Shallow, after watering and weeding under young plantings.

Mulching: After planting, the soil near the plants is mulched with peat or ground 3-5 cm.

Pruning: Weak, as junipers grow slowly. Predominantly removing dry branches.

Conifers do not require a lot of time, the main thing is to plant them properly, taking into account their individual requirements, to water when drought, feed them while they are growing the first time ... Conifers are my hobby, it gives me pleasure to grow them, and that says it all.

I will not undertake to teach anyone, my experience is not so great, I can give advice not scientifically based, but solely from my own experience. I have a site to the northeast of St. Petersburg and north of Priozersk, there is a continental climate with strong winds and a sharp change from heat to cold - a difficult climate for conifers. But it is saved by the fact that it is located on the shore of the lake - more humidity.

Now I like rare species more, since I have already passed the stage of buying everything that I liked at first glance. Before you buy, study the information on the plant of interest. I look for information on the Internet: I type the full name of coniferous in Russian, I read everything, then in Latin (this is a rebus, many sellers write in a mixture of Latin and English). Sometimes you have to break your head. The main thing is to enter the type and genus. With novelties it is more difficult than with older varieties. I study all the information in Google (there is more), but the sites are more often foreign, so with a translator. I still have a few encyclopedias, well, the knowledge gained earlier. For plants selling attention is minimal. There is information, how to say, unreliable. They would sell, and there ... Therefore, it is necessary to compare with several at once.
There is also such a site called EDSR (“Encyclopedia of Ornamental Garden Plants”), where information is useful to read. But not in the encyclopedia itself, but on the forum, there the people share their personal experience.

A very common conifer problem - changing color needles. Sometimes the needles just darken, it seems to change color to brownish. This is the norm for some species.

it happens sunburn: Some varieties do not tolerate the spring sun, they are best planted in the shade. If they initially planted them unsuccessfully, and the sun still burned, I immediately transplant them into the shade.
True, it is better not to replant adult conifers, but if not more than a year has passed after planting, and the roots have not had time to grow, then it can be transplanted. Only a lump of land should be the diameter of the diameter of the crown, and preferably more, and in the fall. Conifers grow all year round and for the rest of autumn, winter and spring will have time to adapt and take root before summer. In the heat, they are much worse. If the spring had to be transplanted, then water regularly, but not pour, and it is best to conduct sprinkling. But even here there are exceptions: pines and junipers do not like excess moisture. Even the variety plays a role: there are moisture-loving junipers, but there are not.

I heard many people use phytostimulants or chemicals after sunburn, but it doesn’t hurt. The problem remains, and next spring will be the same. In the end, the plant will die. You can cover with non-woven material, but it is also not very good: if you wrap too tightly, or it becomes warmer (in winter it is frost and snow, then thaw), the plant subsides, the needles die, it turns out the middle is all bald and sweat.

Next option plant simply changes the needles.

Description of juniper rocky: grade Skyrocket

Every three to four years, the needles turn yellow and die. Do not worry, the new grow.

Well, finally, if the plant begins to diethen it does not happen immediately. About half a year is unchanged, then the needles darken, and after a while it dries out. There's nothing you can do. I tried to prevent it, I watered it with chemicals, but nothing helped.

I also forgot one option if the dog would tag coniferous, and they are animals such that tags in the same place do. Now, if you have chosen, then only either replant or enclose. If you immediately noticed, immediately from the watering can thoroughly by the needles to wash off the whole thing.
Last attack - coastal rats. I think that they make such round holes in the ground. I have so two junipers of the same variety "Spartan" (and in different places) have been undermined at the very root and the root is gnawed. I do not know what he liked them, did not save.

I had other losses. Thuja "Danica" spherical and "Teddy": I sinned at the neighbour’s dog, but then I heard that I’m not the only one - you plant it in the fall, in spring everything leaves the snow from under the snow, and at first the needles darken, and then it folds like a fan and dries. Lzhetsuga Menzezi lasted two years, and Japanese larch it was reborn into a simple one (the difference in the length of the needles, in Japanese it is bluish and longer). For two years she was like this, and then only on the lower branches, and in the fourth year she became short needles and green. Juniper scaly ‘Meyeri’ Well, no way to get. One year selectively needles on the branches dry, and the next all the rest, and dies. I do not know what happened to him, I think that he is not for our zone. I have 3 zone.

Juniper Chinese "Stricta" it burns terribly, even when planted behind a metal fence and illuminated by the slanting rays of the sun, it was still dead at sunset. Juniper rocky "Moonglow": two were planted, moreover, not far from each other and at the same time and in the same place purchased. One changed the color of the needles in the spring, the other did not. The one that changed color died three years later, while the second one was sitting and began to grow actively. They are for the 5th zone declared. I think that the one that remained is preserved because it is on a drier place and is closed by bushes from the wind.

Scaly Blue Star, knowing that they were on fire, covered them with a box, and still two had already died. I think the reason for the poor survival rate is also in the poor content of the seller: if the seller has dried or filled. Again, they often sell at the end of autumn, such as selling off, which they did not have time to sell, since there is nowhere to put them. And in fact, often seedlings are on the verge of gasping. Outwardly, he seems to be normal, but you will plant him, and by the spring he will be bent completely!

Chemistry tried to process "Epin" and "Home", but it seemed to me, it even accelerated their death. Those that undermined, “Korneviny” watered, and also did not get the desired result. I think these drugs may not be for conifers, or I don’t know something ...

The sun loves pines, cedars, and firs. By cedars, I meant pine cedar. Our cedars will not grow, they are heat-loving.
The full sun only pines easily carry and ate. They are even recommended to plant in the sun.
But junipers, as shown by my experience, are better in penumbra. Although it is also necessary to pick up!

She began to notice that some junipers with time began to burn less. For example, "Mint Julep" three years burned badly, on the fourth a little bit, and in this it did not burn at all. I shared this information in the nursery, they told me that he had adapted. Maybe so…

Chinese junipers partially burned too, some sprigs have to be cut in spring. This happens to me with "Pfitzeriana Aurea" (although planted in the penumbra). In general, I formed the opinion that they are not for us. The transplant is very poorly tolerated, although with a large lump they transplanted them, almost half of the needles are thrown off immediately.
Common junipers (those that I grow, forest) also do not burn. But they have one secret: if they brought it, then they should be planted with orientation to the cardinal points as he grew up, that is, the side that was facing south should be there, then everything is fine!

Wild junipers, that if anyone wants to take from the forest, then replace only small ones. Otherwise, they are sick for a long time. Be sure to take the soil from under the pine or Christmas tree, and not to plant in the garden.
Also applies to varietal - only sour primer without additives.
It is necessary to fertilize only special fertilizers for conifers. True, they are not cheap, but very few of them are needed. I am fertilizing the German company "GREENWORLD". Tried "Bui fertilizers" domestic, did not like it, the price is a little cheaper, but the dosage is more than twice, and there is no result at all. He needs a handful for a large plant, for a small one quite a bit. It is long acting. On the pack it is written that it is necessary to apply every six months, but mine is enough once a year and only under young plants. When the plants are already mature, and the root system has grown well, they are fed from the soil.
When planting, it is very good to mulch the tree trunk with bark or sawdust (better than softwood). So the moisture is preserved, wintering is better for those who have just been planted. And when the mulch is rotting, this is extra power.

About junipers one more note - all creeping, especially scaly or with dense needles, for example, ordinary “Nana” (he also has such needles as in scaly), should be planted so that the bottom is blown as if on a hill. I plant on large boulders. If you don’t have slides, it’s worth barking under them. Otherwise, in late autumn, when there is a lot of rain, or in early spring, the needles on the lower branches stop. I planted such specially on the edge of the flower bed and, in addition to the bark, planted small stones under the long branches.

Thuja folded "Zerbina" Autumn behaves badly, does not grow at all, and the needles darken. It was transplanted to a new place in the autumn, but even there her needles darkened. I don’t get more of this kind, I think they are not for our zone. Although I almost fell through this season, I turned my brains on in time! As everyone says heather thuja is burning. I think it depends on the variety, one variety is sitting with me and at least that, while the other two are burning.

Ate "Konica" I don’t even buy, because I have heard more than once and not from one person that they are both burning and chilly with us.

By fir. Monochrome fir died in the third year, although it was planted, as required. Recently I found out that it definitely does not suit for zone 3. From the outset, almost did not grow, and then died.
Balsamic and Korean grow in the sun and here Siberian require shade. Although here, not without exception.
One varietal fir sits in my partial shade, in the evening it is illuminated by the sun, and at least that. And out of five grown from seeds from Siberia, only one survived. Three burned as soon as the snow had gone, a little later.
Here I still sin on the seller, because they really jumped out of the pot very easily, it looks like they were put there recently, and not raised there. The only thing that does not hurt - all were presented to me by a familiar seller. Remaining in the shadow I will definitely!
About Korean fir I know for sure that in the northern regions it is necessary to plant in a place protected from the wind.

I would be glad if someone will help my advice.

Selection and landing

Juniper rocky Skyrocket does not impose special requirements to the soil, but it will like more loamy soils with low acidity more than other soil compositions. For planting choose a sunny place without strong blowing by the wind.

For planting take seedlings with a height of one meter. Such material is easier to adapt to environmental conditions. The plant is older than 2-3 years planted with a lump of earth. This measure is necessary so that the sapling can take root in the new conditions.

Pit requirements

Planting rock juniper begins with digging a hole. It should have dimensions twice the size of an earthy seedling.

If the soil is different in density, then in preparing the pit, crushed stone or broken brick and sand are placed on its bottom. This will provide good drainage, important for conifers that do not tolerate stagnant moisture. If the soil is sandy or sandy, the additional drainage is not necessary.

The depth of the pit also depends on the composition of the soil. For clay and chernozem soils, the depth is 100 cm, for sandy and sandy loams it is 80 cm. Digging deeper pits does not make sense, since juniper has a superficial root structure and nutrient soil from deeper levels will not be used.

Planting process

A sapling with an earthy clod is placed in a hole without removing the wrapping layer, which after several years can decompose on its own. If the seedling is placed in a container, then the latter is removed.

The juniper tree is turned by its beautiful side into a prominent place. Barrel align and hold until the end of the landing. The pit is filled with earth gradually, piecemeal, while tamping. It is important to ensure that there are no empty spaces on the sides and below.

The root neck when planting does not deepen, otherwise the bark will lose vitality, and food will not flow to the plant. When the root neck is deep, the seedling will die.

Care activities

After planting, it is important to pour juniper rocky Skyrocket abundantly. Further watering is carried out weekly in spring and autumn, twice a week in summer. For every meter of tree height you need 10 liters of water.

In the first days after planting, juniper can be treated with a growth stimulator. It is also useful spraying the needles with the drug "Epin" or "Zircon". Processing is carried out plentifully.

The young seedling is covered with a net to prevent desiccation of needles in the sun. In conifers, evaporation from the needles occurs throughout the year. And in the spring, the root structures have not yet thawed out because of the frozen ground. Needles are easy to dry out. To help the plant, you should water the tree with heated water from March 15, and remove the snow from it. So the soil is likely to warm up.

Fertilize juniper follows special formulations intended for conifers. Do not use urea, manure or humus, such fertilizers are dangerous for juniper and can lead to his death.

For the winter, the branches of the plant must be tied up so that they do not sag and spoil the attractive appearance of the juniper.

Juniper propagation is performed using cuttings. The cuttings are carried out in spring, before the kidneys awaken. Летом появятся корни, и растение сможет успешно перезимовать.

You can cutting in mid-summer, but then the cuttings do not have time to grow roots. In this case, they are sheltered for the winter or brought into a cool room with lots of light.

To form a cutting, the lateral branches of the plant are separated. The procedure is carried out in the morning or on an overcast day.

To prepare the substrate take a mixture of sand and perlite, poured it into the boxes, where the cuttings are planted at an angle. Boxes must not be exposed to the open sun. The temperature in the first days is necessary at the level of 15-18 degrees, then 20-23.

To improve the growth and development of juniper, you can use "Kornevin" and other stimulants for the development of roots. It is important to maintain the humidity of the substrate, but not to allow an excess of moisture that can lead to rotting of the roots.

In spring plants are planted in a permanent place. This completes the process of breeding juniper, and then the usual care of the plant is performed.

Rock junipers in landscape design are used quite often. These evergreen trees adorn any garden areas. They perfectly green open areas.

Especially often the juniper rocky Skyrocket is planted in the southern regions of Russia. In such regions there is less precipitation, so the appearance of the plant does not deteriorate under their influence.

Juniper has a neat crown, so master designers often create from it living hedges. With the help of this tree also make out the main entrances. It makes charming alleys.

Juniper of this variety is resistant to the conditions of urban pollution, does not require frequent watering. These qualities make it popular with gardeners and territory design masters. Next to the juniper you can plant rose bushes and cereals.

Varieties of juniper rocky

Not every plant in our time has subspecies, however, thanks to the work of world breeders, it was possible to identify new varieties of juniper rocky, among which the main ones are

  1. Moffet Blue - winter-resistant plant that can grow to six meters in height, with a broad and sprawling crown, which can not grow in places with extremely humid climates.
  2. Munglow is an unusual juniper variety that reaches a height of up to two meters, has a lush crown of bright blue-silver color that looks great in winter, especially when there is a lot of snow around.
  3. Silver King - a low bush, which at a rather mature age reaches a height of less than one meter, has a wide light blue crown, which makes up the beauty of this plant.
  4. Springbank is a light-hearted variety of juniper, whose branches at the edges moor and are distinguished by a light silver shimmer, and the bush itself reaches a height of no more than four meters and more than all other species looks like a rocket.
  5. Wichita Blue is a juniper variety that is not very tall, but it has a lush and beautiful crown of a bluish-silver shade.

From the history of the appearance of this variety

Each plant has its own history of origin. In some cases - selection processes, in others - the discovery of a plant in certain habitats, and still others appear by moving it to different territories. Our plant is no exception, because it somehow appeared.

So, juniper "skyrocket" appeared in our country much recently, somewhere in the late nineteenth century. It was brought to us from North America and was immediately accustomed to our climatic conditions, since in its homeland it grows on rocky slopes and does not require specific rules for the care, planting and cultivation of the plant.

The name "skyrocket" is translated from English as "sky rocket". Indeed, the name of the plant speaks for itself, because the plant has a conical shape, tending to the sky, and thus resembles a rocket launched into space.

Many people, having seen such a plant for the first time, underestimated it and did not dare plant it in their garden. However, having learned about the beneficial properties of this plant and still appreciating its beauty, they began to buy up large quantities of seedlings of this plant and plant them in different places and in different ways. Such is the history of the emergence of this variety, the beauty of which we admire to this day.

Characteristic culture

Juniper - a representative of the Cypress family. It belongs to the conifer of evergreen trees. They can grow in the form of columnar or spreading trees, creeping or erect shrubs. The needles on their branches can be in the form of needles or scales. The growth rate of trees is average.

Fruits are formed on them, the use of which is extensive: they are added to fruit drinks, compotes, marinades, and pickles. When added to meat, the dish will be enriched with savory taste and aroma.

Description of Juniper Skyrocket

Skyrocket bred by breeders in the 19th century. For 20 years, he is able to reach a height of 8 m with a trunk diameter of 20 cm. Every year, juniper adds 15–18 cm in height, up to 5 cm in width.

Related plants, on the basis of which Skyrocket is grown, come from the mountain slopes of North America. That is why this variety is unpretentious to the composition of the soil and winter hardy. The root system goes deep into the ground, so it holds firmly. Even a strong wind will not be able to knock down Skyrocket.

This variety is characterized by a columnar shape, the growth of branches from the base, bluish-blue color of needles. Thick shoots tight to the trunk. Juniper Skyrocket is used as a vertical element in garden plots and other green areas.

On a note! The place for planting juniper is chosen well lit, protected from drafts. The soil is preferable loamy, with low acidity.

The younger planted a plant, the easier it will take root. Also, adaptation will be better if the green space is planted with a lump of earth.

Note! Planting material must be purchased directly in nurseries or in garden centers and specialty stores.

The process of planting juniper step by step:

  1. A pit is dug to a depth of 0.6 m, at the bottom of which small stones, broken shards or expanded clay are laid. The width of the pit should be 2 times the size of the pot in which the juniper grew.
  2. The young seedling is removed from the container, without breaking the earthy coma is planted in a prepared pit.
  3. The root system is filled with a substrate composed of turf ground, peat, sand (1: 1: 1).
  4. Soil rammed, plentifully watered.
  5. If necessary, another substrate is added, then the near-stem circle is mulched with peat, chips.

After all the procedures performed, the root neck should be flush with the soil surface.

Juniper Artificial Wall

To dissolve many plants at home, the cutting method is applied. The seed method is ineffective, as the planting material germinates for a long time and may not transfer maternal qualities. By layering Skyrocket it is difficult to propagate, because its branches rush up and it is difficult to pin them to the ground.

The process of propagation by cuttings in more detail:

  1. Breaks off the top of the plant with a small piece of bark (with heels). The length of the cutting is 12-20 cm.
  2. Then it is half cleared from the needles, the lower part of the cutting is immersed in a growth enhancer powder (for example, rootstock).
  3. The prepared shoots are planted in a box with soil mixture of peat, sand and sod to a depth of 2 cm. If there are several shoots, they are maintained between 6 and 7 cm between them.
  4. Substrate with cuttings poured water.
  5. A greenhouse effect is created in the box. For this, it is covered with glass or film. Every day the greenhouse is ventilated.

Fully plant is considered rooted after 3 months. After this, young plants are planted in separate pots for growing. Juniper can be cut all season, but the best survival rate and growth occurs in the spring.

Important! Juniper cuttings do not root in the water, because their crust begins to peel off, which will negatively affect their viability.

Further care

The first time after planting juniper Skyrocket watered well. An adult plant needs watering no more than 2-3 times per season. Juniper has a deep root system and, unlike other plants, it has enough moisture from groundwater. But spraying the crown with water by sprinkling will be perceived by the plant favorably.

The peculiarity of care for this variety is that it needs to be tied up with a string for the winter. This will prevent cracking of the trunk and breakage of the branches from the pressure of the snow.

At the end of winter there is a high probability of burning the needles of the sun. Therefore, the plant should be pritenyat covering material. Also at this time it is necessary to carry out another procedure: to shovel the snow and water the plant. This will help to warm the soil more quickly and prevent desiccation of the needles.

Every spring, before the start of sap flow, sanitary pruning is done. At the same time, broken and diseased branches are cut out. Pruning can be done to form a topiary plant. The instrument for these procedures must be well disinfected.

Frequent feeding juniper is not required. It is enough to shed it in April with fertilizer solution for conifers. Before and after feeding, the stem of the trunk is shed with water.

Note! The use of organic matter in the form of manure or humus can lead to the death of juniper.

Diseases and pests

Juniper can be attacked by a mining moth, aphid, scute, spider mite. When they are first detected, juniper should be sprayed with a solution of any insecticide. To prevent their invasion, the plant is treated every spring with the same preparations.

Juniper disease is a common rust. In this case, the fungal disease of the twigs are covered with yellow mucus. As treatment in the initial stages of the disease, a Bordeaux liquid solution or other copper-containing preparations is used.

If it was not possible to get rid of the fungal infection, the plant is dug out and burned. The landing site is treated with a fungicide.

Proper planting

Proper planting is an important process on which the plant's further “life” depends. Each person before planting any plant must know the features and rules necessary to perform this action. Juniper "skyrocket", though not such a demanding plant, but still requires to observe certain rules during planting, the most important among which are

  • a selection of good fertile soil that contains all the necessary nutrients
  • selection of favorable solar and windless places
  • seedlings, whose growth should not exceed one meter, since it is these seedlings that contribute to good growth and development of the plant,
  • seedlings must be purchased only from reliable suppliers or in trusted stores, otherwise you will not get good healthy plants and in addition to this you will lose good money,
  • Before planting seedlings, the soil must be abundantly moistened, otherwise the plant will not graft and will not grow,
  • before planting, it is necessary to add broken brick, crushed stone with sand and pebbles,
  • also it is necessary to add organic and other fertilizers to the soil, including peat, sand and sod,
  • it is necessary to produce mulching, for which wood chips, dry leaf (humus) and peat are used, this mixture helps to saturate the soil with necessary nutrients and components,
  • planting of seedlings must be carried out so that after they are filled with soil, voids do not form in the soil and air does not penetrate into them, otherwise the plant will not be able to grow.

Features of care and cultivation of juniper "skyrocket"

Each plant requires its own conditions for growing and care. All people who control compliance with these conditions receive a bountiful harvest or a bright and colorful flowering garden. In order to grow a juniper "skyrocket" and quality care for him you need to know the following features

  • plants need to be watered only during a long drought, otherwise the plant will lose its colorful external properties and will die,
  • the need for tying in the winter, because the plant, although it has good frost resistance, it is worth to be safe and keep the trunk in fierce Russian frosts,
  • the need for spraying the crown, in this way you will help the plant easier to tolerate hot and sunny weather,
  • annual supplements that will help the plant get more nutrients for good growth and development, however, you need to choose special supplements for conifers,
  • pruning a plant must also be done once a year, cutting off unnecessary parts of the plant, you give it the opportunity for further development, but pruning must be done in the spring, before the beginning of the juicing, otherwise the plant may die.

Fertilizers needed by the plant

Fertilizers are essential nutrients that any plant requires. You must be attentive to these requirements, because only one appearance can tell what elements are missing in the plant's body. A person needs to fertilize in time for the well-being of his plant, otherwise it may die, for juniper the necessary and important fertilizers are

  • nitrogen,
  • phosphoric,
  • potash,
  • organic compounds (peat, compost, humus),
  • sand and clay.

Variety description

Juniper «Skyrocket» is one of the varieties of rocky juniper, which was bred at the end of the last century. In nature, its "ancestors" grow on the mountainous rocky slopes of the United States and northern Mexico, are also found in British Columbia and Canada. It was from them that the juniper Skyrocket got its advantages: winter hardiness and undemanding of the soil.

In nature, rocky species of cypress trees reach a height of 10 to 20 meters. Cultivar "Skyrocket" compared with wild plants seem tiny. After all, it can reach a maximum of 8 meters. But to stretch so much, the tree will need 20 years.

The tree has a very decorative appearance due to the peculiar color of the needles and the shape of the crown. Close to the trunk branches have a beautiful bluish-bluish tint. They grow almost from the very base of the trunk, so the tree has the shape of a slender column.

The annual growth of a tree trunk is 15–20 cm in height, and it grows only 5 cm in width. Thus, at the age of 10 years, the juniper “sky rocket” will have a crown radius from 80 cm to 1 m and a height of about 3 meters

The tree has a developed root system and is well kept on light soils.

Features junior varieties Skyrocket (sky rocket)

Juniper Skyrocket differs narrow crown in the form of a column. The tree grows faster than other members of this species, about 3 meters in 10 years. The shoots tight to the trunk are enlarged by 12 cm, the needles are green-blue. Juniper needles saturate the space around the tree with phytoncides that destroy harmful bacteria and help purify the air. Skyrocket is unpretentious in care, needs watering of medium intensity, not very sensitive to the composition of the soil.

Skyrocket landing features

Landing Skyrocket does not cause much difficulty, but requires compliance with a number of rules.

  1. The soil. Skyrocket prefers loam with a weak degree of acidity.
  2. Landing spot. Two basic requirements must be fulfilled when choosing a place for juniper growth. The place should be windy and sunny.

Skyrocket Juniper Planting Algorithm:

  • It is recommended to choose a seedling no higher than a meter. Experienced gardeners believe that seedlings of this height are better adapted because of the life potential of young plants.
  • It is necessary to purchase seedlings only from proven gardening farms or in specialized stores. You can not buy seedlings with bare roots and hardened tips of needles.
  • Young seedlings removed from the container. Before removing earthen ball juniper moisturize plentifully.
  • A pit is prepared with a diameter of 2–3 times larger than an earthling seedling. The depth of the pit should be from 0.5–0.7 m, drainage is created at the bottom of the dimple using broken bricks, pebbles, and crushed stone with sand.
  • The sapling is removed from the tank together with the earthy clod and sinks into the pit. The root neck should protrude no more than 10 cm above the surface. Then the pit is filled with soil mixture from sand, peat and turf in a ratio of 1: 1: 1.
  • Soil mixture is rammed so that there is no room for voids filled with air.
  • Landing end abundant watering.
  • After the moistened earth has passed, add the soil of the same composition in the required amount.
  • It is recommended to mulch the composition of the chips, dry foliage and peat. A 5 cm layer of mulch will be a good barrier to the evaporation of liquid.

Features care Skyroket variety

Unpretentious care does not mean that juniper does not need attention at all. Providing watering, pruning, fertilizing - mandatory elements of growing Skyrocket.

An important feature of care can be called strapping for the winter period..

Adult juniper confidently demonstrates heat resistance and will have to be watered in exceptional cases. Even with a drought for the entire season, 2-3 irrigation will be enough.

Fertilizer and dressing. Top dressing is sufficient to produce annually in April. It is recommended to choose specialized fertilizers for conifers. Fertilizers are evenly distributed in pristvolnom circle and the tree is watered abundantly.

Pruning plants. Trimming is done regularly once a year. For pruning choose spring time before the start of sap flow. Secateurs cut dried and broken branches.

Breeding. Propagation by seeds is extremely inefficient, so juniper, like the juniper variety Skyrocket, is propagated mainly by cuttings. The cuttings should reach 10 cm long. Cuttings harvested in late April, mid-May. Before planting, the cuttings are kept in a solution of the root stimulator for 24 hours. Rooting cuttings takes 1.5 months in the mixture of peat and sand in a ratio of 1: 1. Diving into a permanent growth site is possible in 2–3 years.

Diseases and pests. Juniper is susceptible to the attack of specific pests such as Hermes and the creep. A coniferous tree is threatened by a scythe, a spider mite that mines a mole. Defeating the pests is easier when they first appear, if the parasites multiply, then the plant will be impossible to save. To control pests using insecticides.

Of the diseases most often causes rust. Twigs and needles are covered with swellings of the spindle shape with fungal secretions of the slimy nature of yellow color. The treatment is carried out with special solutions of copper-containing drugs. The measures are effective only at the beginning of the lesion. If it was not possible to stop the spread of the fungal infection, then the tree is recommended to be cut down. Juniper, affected by rust, will be a constant cause of infection of other plants in the territory of the garden, backyard.

Growing and caring for juniper

Juniper rocky "Skyrocket" is very unpretentious to the soil. But he still prefers subacid loam. But a tree places increased demands on light. Planting seedlings should be made on sunny areas not blown by the winds. For example, a great place would be a line along the fence of a site on the sunny (south or southeast) side.

For planting on a permanent place, it is better to acquire young seedlings with a height of not more than 1 meter. After all, the younger the tree, the easier it is acclimatized to the new conditions of life.

Usually seedlings are sold in containers. To transplant a young tree, you need to thoroughly saturate the moisture of the earthen room in which it grows. The pit for planting a seedling needs to be prepared twice as large in diameter as an earthy clod with roots.

Planting of juniper rocky is made by the method of reloading as follows:

  1. Carefully remove the sapling with a wet earthy clod from the container.
  2. We place it in the prepared pit.
  3. We fall asleep with a mixture of peat, sod land and sand in equal proportions.
  4. We ram the ground around the seedling.

Although junipers are fairly resistant to drought, a young plant should be watered regularly for 2-3 years after disembarking to a permanent place, and sprayed in summer.

Winter plant care consists of tying the branches (How to bind a purchased Christmas tree for transportation). This is necessary so that under the weight of the snow cover the branches do not fall apart or break.

In early spring, before the beginning of the intensive movement of the sap, dry and damaged branches should be removed from the tree.

Although the juniper "Skyrocket" does not need artificial crown formation, it transfers the haircut without any problems.

If the plant is suddenly attacked by aphids or caterpillars (this happens extremely rarely), you can use chemicals to combat these pests. This may be, for example, "Confidor". But It is better to use folk remedies, as there are always insects and birds that eat pests in the garden. And if the parasites reappear after treatment with strong drugs, then naturally they will not be destroyed.

Juniper in landscape design

A variety of cypress are widely used in landscape design. But unfairly little attention is paid to rock juniper. But with its help you can create very original garden compositions. In combination with round low-growing shrubs, the columnar juniper will create a beautiful landscape and will be a peculiar accent spot in it.

From these trees an excellent hedge is formed. It will be not only very decorative, but also functional due to the height of the trees. From juniper rocky "Skyrocket" also create alleys, for example, on the way to the house. Symmetrically located pairs of these trees frame the entrance to the house very nicely.
