Planting dahlias with tubers in spring: preparation, germination, planting

Dahlias are considered to be among the most beautiful autumn flowers. Bright and colorful dahlias will be a real decoration of the garden plot. You can enjoy the picturesque flowers and lush foliage throughout the summer, until the onset of frost.

Botanical description

Dahlia, a brilliant beauty from Mexico, in her homeland - a wild perennial herb. In conditions middle band Russia, its growing season is forced to stop with the first autumn frosts. At the latest in October, the tubers are dug out of the ground and cut off the remains of the stems to a height of 10 cm. For storage, they are covered with a layer of sand or peat and placed in a cool place - preferably in a dry and dark basement with a positive temperature and good air circulation.

In the botanical literature, the original name of the genus of these flowers - Dahlia (Dahlia). Subsequently, the second name appeared - Georgina, in honor of St. Petersburg professor Johann Georgi, but it remained only in Russia and the CIS countries. Both forms of the name are also used: "dahlia" and "dahlia".

The lush flowering of the star of the autumn garden is the result of optimal storage conditions for tubers in the winter and properly chosen dates for planting dahlias in spring in open ground.

These beautiful flowers are propagated by dividing the roots and cuttings, cuttings and seeds.

Regardless of the variety, all dahlias love sunny, open, but without strong winds areas and well-drained, loose, organic-rich soil. It should not be acidic, otherwise the tubers are poorly preserved in winter.

Planting dahlia tubers in the spring

Spring, more precisely, the end of March is the right time for dividing root crops and their preplant preparation. Sharing the nodules, be sure to leave the rest of the stem. Near him are concentrated dormant buds, which will sprout. To don't make a mistakebefore dividing the tubers, they need to germinate. The process in detail is as follows:

  • in a container with a small layer of soil they spread tubers, sprinkled with peat mixture or moss and put in a bright, warm (about 20 ° C) room,
  • after about half a month, the buds will start to grow, then the tubers are divided into parts, leaving no more than 2 shoots on each,
  • places of cuts are covered with wood ash to prevent rotting.

Dahlias prepared in this way are planted in the ground, focusing on the dates of planting potatoes in the area (usually in the middle of April - beginning of May).

Important: the tubers should not be planted entirely. Undivided plant will give many shoots, which will lead to thickening of the bush, deterioration of the quality of flowering and affect the safety of poorly matured tubers.

It is undesirable to leave large tubers of the previous year on delenki, since new shoots are often not formed storage roots (or they are slightly thickened). During storage, these dahlias usually die.

Holes dug out on the bayonet shovels are filled with humus (compost, peat compost) with the addition of 1-2 tablespoons of complex mineral fertilizer. When planting, it is necessary to deepen the sprouts by 5-8 cm. For tall varieties, a peg is driven in near the edge of the pit, to which a bush will later be tied. If this is done later, the root system can be damaged. The earth is watered abundantly so that it lies more closely on the roots.

If the tubers have already germinated, and planting is delayed, they can be planted first in pots.

Planting dahlia cuttings

The flowering of dahlias derived from cuttings is usually more lush and abundant than in plants grown from divided tubers.

To get strong cuttings, dahlia should be distilled properly, observing the following conditions.

  1. At the end of February, root crops are placed in boxes with a mixture of sheet humus and sand and transferred to a well-lit, warm (about 15-20 ° C) room.
  2. Dried and shriveled tubers before planting for 3-4 hours soaked in water.
  3. Korneklubni covered with soil, leaving the neck completely open.
  4. When the shoots reach a height of 5-10 cm, they are cut or separated by a sharp movement, capturing a small piece of tuber.
  5. The cuttings are immediately transplanted into prepared pots, powdering the slices with a root formation stimulator. To facilitate their bruising, you can cut the leaves.
  6. After landing on the pot, they pull a transparent plastic bag and put it in a warm place, keeping the first 5-7 days high. air humidity and protecting from the bright sun.
  7. After 4-6 weeks, new roots and leaves are formed. Now the bag can be removed.
  8. To dahlia tall varieties well branched, pinch the tip of the shoot at a height of 40-50 cm

The cuttings will bark well and in a jar of water, which must be periodically changed and monitored so that its temperature is constant.

Rooted cuttings are planted in a permanent place in the last days of May - early June, when the threat of returning spring frosts is past. When planting, they are slightly buried for better tuberization and greater resistance to winds, leaving between 50 to 90 cm between plants, depending on the height of future bushes. They bloom in the same year.

Grades in which the first internodes of the cuttings are short are planted so that several knots are in the soil. At the same time they also form the storage roots, confined to the axillary buds. In the future, plants are well tolerated storage. Even if the stem dies off in a significant area, the buds and storage roots formed in the nodes remain viable and are used for reproduction. Next season you can get additional cuttings and delenki from them.

Dahlias growing in the garden are also made in the summer, but, as a rule, such plants do not have time to bloom until frost.

Young green shoots of flowers are very fond of slugs and snails. To protect the plants from them, use special grain baits and fences.

Growing from seed

Seed propagation is mainly used by breeders to create new varieties, since the seedlings do not repeat the whole peculiarities maternal plants. But, dwarf non-terry dahlias, which are most often called “merry guys,” and dark-leaved varieties, are propagated, as a rule, by seeds.

Planting of dahlias in the spring with seeds is carried out both in a seedless and seedling way.

  1. The end of April or the beginning of May is the time of direct sowing in the soil. Seeds are laid out in the grooves to a depth of 0.5 cm. Shoots appear 10-13 days, if the daytime temperature is kept at 16-17 ° C. They are thinned at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other. Flowering begins in July and continues until late autumn.
  2. To speed up flowering used seedling method. Seeds are first germinated in containers indoors or in a greenhouse, seedlings contain at medium temperature. Seedlings planted in separate pots. In the flower garden, accustomed to the sun and fresh air, seedlings are planted when the danger of returning the spring cold has passed.

In both cases, by the autumn small nodules are formed, which tolerate winter storage well. In the spring they are planted in the garden without prior rearing. Flowering occurs in the second half of July.

In case of damage to the planting material (seedlings, young plants and rooted cuttings) with a black leg, it is treated with a systemic fungicide.

During the entire growing season, plants need to provide abundant watering 1-2 times a week, but not more often.

During the whole season it is advisable to carry out 3-4 fertilizing of flowers with mineral fertilizers, the last - no later than August 20.

Proper care - the key to long flowering. The first frosts signal that dahlias need to be dug out and prepared for winter storage.

Peculiarities of spring planting of dahlias with tubers

The first time for planting dahlias can be taken in the garden center. Planting material is carefully chosen. The nodules must be attached to the root of the neck, because the buds grow only on it. It is important to know how to keep your own dahlias until spring, so the preparation of planting material for the coming year begins in the autumn.

Perennial dahlias, whose birthplace is South America, do not overwinter in conditions of central Russia. To save the plants for the next year, they are dug every autumn, and planted in the spring again.

It is important not only to dig up and preserve the tubers of dahlias in time, but also to properly prepare them for spring planting.

When they get from a cool cellar to a warm room, they quickly sprout.

Tubers before planting can not germinate, but then you can get flowering only in late August or in September - 2 months later than from the prepared planting material.

Preparation of planting material and soil

The site for growing dahlias next year is prepared in the fall - they bring rotten organic matter and dig it up. It is important to consider not only the structure and fertility of the soil, but also its acidity. Flowers love a neutral substrate, if the medium is acidic or alkaline, they will not be able to reveal all their wonderful qualities. In the spring the plot is leveled and holes are made.

Preparation of dahlia tubers for planting consists in their spring inspection, rejection of poorly preserved and germination of the remaining ones.

They throw away all the nodules that have broken off from the root collar: they will not give germs. Spots damaged during storage are cut with a sharp blade, slices are treated with green paint.

Sprouting tubers in a special container

To germinate, dahlias are taken out of storage not earlier than the end of April - 2 or 3 weeks before planting in open ground. Once in the heat and light, the tubers begin to germinate very quickly, for a longer period the sprouts will outgrow and be weak.

For sprouting dahlias, it is not necessary to take good soil. Sawdust, coconut substrate, sand will do. Nutrient reserve in the nodules themselves is enough to start the growth of shoots. Planting in pots with drainage holes will keep plants from becoming wet.

After inspecting the tubers, they are put on germination in a warm bright place. Sand or sawdust is poured into each container, the dahlia tuber is placed with its root neck up (it must be above the level of the substrate).

If there is a desire to propagate a rare variety by cutting, tubers can be brought to germination in March. Grown dahlia sprouts are cut off with a sharp blade along with the heel and rooted separately, and on the tuber more buds wake up and shoots grow.

The sequence of actions for obtaining seedlings by cutting:

  • cut shoots stuck into the wet substrate,
  • cover them with cans, bags or plastic bottles before rooting,
  • place slices on the tubers treated with green paint.

For cuttings use old tubers, unsuitable for planting. This additional method allows you to quickly multiply the desired variety and get a lot of seedlings for making flower beds.

Planting dahlias in spring tubers in open ground

In central Russia, dahlias can be planted in open ground no earlier than mid-May, because they are afraid of temperatures below 0 °. Prepared tubers are planted in a sunny place with fertile soil.

You can add to the hole compost or humus, dahlia grow well on nitrogen-rich, loose soils.

The planting scheme of flowers depends on the variety of dahlias. The distance between the holes make from 50 cm to 1 meter, depending on the expected size of the bush. The depth of the hole is one spade bayonet, if the rhizome is large, slightly deeper (up to 40 cm). The lower part of the shoots should be covered with earth a few centimeters. Planted dahlias are watered and mulched.

Aftercare for flowers

Flower care includes regular watering, weeding, feeding, protection from pests and diseases. Tall and medium grades need to be tied up and shaped. For this, seedlings with a height of about 50 cm are cut or pinch the tops (above 4 or 6 sheets).

If you allow the dahlia to grow without pruning, then soon a bud will begin to form at the top of the shoot. It will delay the growth of the remaining peduncles that may appear in the plant. After removal of the upper point of growth, lateral shoots will begin to develop from each leaf axil. Experienced gardeners who have appeared from the first two leaves advise to cut, so that the bush does not grow too large and start to bloom faster. In summer, bloomed inflorescences are necessarily removed so that the plants are not depleted.

Features of fertilizer and growth stimulants:

  1. For dressing dahlias in the springtime do not use nitrogenous fertilizers. Manure and humus are applied to the area where dahlias grow in the fall, after digging up the tubers. Then the plants will receive nitrogen in early spring - immediately after planting.
  2. Before the budding phase, when it rains, Kornevin is used to stimulate root growth. This will keep the plant's root system in adverse conditions of high humidity.
  3. At the beginning of June, potash and phosphate fertilizers are required for flowers. They will help the formation of buds, better flowering and preparation of tubers for winter.

Dahlias are not afraid of frost down to -5 ° C. Dig them in storage in October, when the above-ground part is completely dry. Until the moment of digging, dried stems are not cut, otherwise the buds will wake up. It is better to remove the tubers from the ground with pitchforks, so as not to damage. Better to do it in dry weather.

Dug up tubers are dried before storage. The stem is cut to a height of 10 cm, gently scrub the ground with tubers. Cut all the sick and broken parts of rhizomes with sharp scissors. For reproduction next year, dahlias are divided, leaving on each cut plot a part of the root collar.

It is advisable to treat the tubers with a solution of fungicide, potassium permanganate or sprinkle with sulfur before storing it.

It is convenient to store them in cardboard boxes, sprinkled with large sawdust. The boxes are closed and left until spring in the storage room, warmed, dry garage or cellar with an air temperature of 3–10 ° C.

You can save dahlias in the winter in paraffin. To do this, peeled and dried tubers are dipped in melted paraffin, stored in a basement or in a dry cool room. The advantages of this method are that dahlias do not dry out and do not wake up early. In the spring before planting, the tubers are germinated, pre-clearing the paraffin film.

Fight against diseases and pests

The cause of the disease of dahlias are various factors - viruses, fungi, nutritional deficiencies, improper care, insect infestation pests.

Sometimes on the bushes leaf blades look wrinkled, covered with spots. Leaf spot causes chlorosis, which is manifested from a lack of some nutrients. Correct the situation will help fertilizing, checking and adjusting the acidity of the soil.

Yellow spots with chlorosis are located along the veins of the leaves. If they are scattered on the sheet randomly, it is a mosaic virus.

Plants infected with a virus must be excavated and destroyed so that the disease is not transmitted to healthy dahlias with insects or garden tools. Preparations for viral diseases in plants have not yet been developed.

Fungal diseases of dahlias:

  1. Thickened landing and shaded place provokes the occurrence of gray rot. First a gray bloom appears on the leaves, then it spreads to all parts of the plant. Tsvetonosy are bent, and buds do not reveal. Infection persists in tubers, may resume next year.
  2. If dahlia buds wither, the tops are drooping, it is covered with a white-pink bloom - this is fusarium. When digging, these tubers shrivel, poorly stored.
  3. Another disease of dahlias is powdery mildew. A white mealy bloom appears on the stalk and leaves, which then turns gray. With a strong lesion leaves curl, buds fall, there is a growth arrest.

To combat fungal diseases, fungicides (Fitosporin, Fundazol, etc.) are used. Severely affected specimens destroy.

Flowers are also threatened by insect pests - aphid, nematodes, bugs, caterpillars, cabbage moths, whitefly, thrips. Insecticides are used against them.

All the trouble of growing and caring for dahlias is justified by excellent summer flowering. Experience and hard work will help create a floral paradise of dahlias on the plot.

Where and how to plant?

Dahlias are thermophilic and light-requiring. Therefore, for planting choose sunny places, protected from cold and strong winds. The plot chosen for dahlias should be lit by the sun for at least 6 hours a day. In low and wetlands, plants do not survive.

Dahlias grow on any soil, but the best option is humus-rich garden loam. Good for dahlias and loose fertilized sandy soil. The site intended for dahlias is carefully dug over in the fall, and well loosened in the spring with pitchforks.

In the middle belt conditions, dahlia tubers are best planted in open ground in early June, when the threat of return frost is completely bypassed. An earlier landing requires mandatory cover.

At the selected place digging holes in the depth of the spade bayonet. Before planting, we stick wooden pegs 1–1.5 m high for the garters of growing dahlias into the ground near each hole.

It is better to do this in advance so as not to damage the roots! Then we plant the tubers with the root of the neck deep 2-3 cm below the soil level. We water our plants and mulch the chopped wood bark.
Dahlias usually bloom in late July - early August. There is already close to the autumn, with its first frosts. And I want our wonderful dahlias to bloom a little longer!

To extend the term of flowering dahlias, I plant tubers in the ground already with sprouts! I'll tell you how I do it.
In early April, pick up tubers from storage in the basement. I put it in a cardboard box and put it on
glazed loggia with a temperature of about +15 ° C. The first sprouts hatch in 2 weeks. After that I plant tubers in large pots with earth and peat moss. I root the root collar by 5-6 cm. This contributes to better tuberization, and subsequently protects the kidneys from freezing during possible spring frosts.
As the young shoots grow, I remove the stepchildren - this is necessary for the development of larger flowers. In the middle of May I plant dahlias in the flower beds for shelter. And in early July, they are already beginning to bloom! Thus, I extend the time of flowering of my favorite dahlias for a whole month!

How to care?

In general, caring for dahlias is not difficult and includes the same activities as for other ornamental plants. However, there are individual features. Of course, you can grow dahlias on the principle of "planted and forgotten." But if we want to achieve lush and long flowering, we will be required to comply with certain rules. In other words, we need to correctly guide our dahlias!

First, we form a bush correctly. To do this, we regularly remove the emerging stepchildren - side shoots that grow in the leaf axils. The excess shoots are broken out at the base, and we pinch the main ones after the formation of the 4th-5th pair of leaves. Without this, the bush will stupidly grow at the expense of flowering.

Secondly, periodically remove the buds on the side shoots. Then the central shoots will give large flowers, and the flower stalks themselves will become longer and stronger. If this is not done, the bush will “spray” on many small flowers. Thirdly, we immediately remove the withered buds. By this we stimulate the formation of new buds and prolong the blooming of our dahlias.

In hot weather, dahlias are unwell, because their hollow stems quickly lose their turgor. During such periods, plants need abundant watering and mulching of the soil to preserve moisture.

In the period of growth and flowering after heavy irrigation we feed our dahlias with complex mineral and organic fertilizers. Feeding is carried out with an interval of 10 days. Since September, watering and feeding stop.
To protect dahlias from aphids, which feeds on the sap of leaves, stems and buds, spray the bushes with infusion of onion peels or garlic. Well helps abundant washing leaves with soapy water. In case of emergency we use insecticidal preparations.

In late September - early October, we carefully dig up the dahlia tubers, otherwise they will die from frost.
Before digging, the stems are cut at a height of 3-4 cm from the root collar. We clean the tubers from the ground, disinfect the slices with a strong solution of potassium permanganate and powder with crushed charcoal. Then dry and remove for storage - until spring.

How to store dahlia tubers in winter?

In winter, the dahlia tubers are stored in a dry cool room - in the basement, cellar or on a warmed balcony at a temperature of + 3-7 ° C. The bottom of the box is lined with paper so that free edges remain. Fill the dry ground with a layer of 3 cm. Then lay the tubers and top it with a layer of earth. The box is “packed” with protruding edges of the paper. Instead of land, you can use sand, sawdust softwood, peat or perlite.

How to multiply?

Dahlias reproduce by dividing the tubers or cuttings.
Tubers dahlia divide immediately before planting. Carefully cut the root tubers with a sharp knife. Each of the received parts should have at least one peephole. The resulting delenki immediately planted in the ground.

Cutting dahlias do so. In April, when sprouts with a height of 5-7 cm appear at the root tubers, we cut several pieces with a “heel” - that is, a small piece of tuber. Please note: 1-2 shoots must be left, of which then new plants will develop. Place the cut on the handle and root tuber process for disinfection of charcoal. We pour into the pot a nutritious garden soil, and on top add a layer of coarse river sand. We moisten the substrate and plant the cuttings to a depth of 3-4 cm. We cover the pot with a plastic bag and put it in a warm, bright place. We water plants daily. After 2 weeks, the cuttings will take root, and they can be planted in open ground.

How to use dahlias in garden design?

Dahlias of various colors and shapes look great on separate flower beds. In single plantings, especially flowering and large-flowered varieties are especially spectacular. Dahlias with long and strong flower stalks are very good for bunch cutting.

Tall varieties better planted along fences and fences. Dwarf and flower beds look cozy in curb plantings along the tracks, in rabatki and flower arrays in company with other plants.
No matter how you put dahlias in your garden, they will enliven any planting, giving them the necessary brightness, height, tiered volume and a delicious light openwork!

Pre-planting treatment

Root and out-root dressings.

(Groundwater should not rise above 60-70 cm from the soil surface). With a higher standing of groundwater, rabatki, flower beds or ridges with Georgians need to be raised by deepening the paths, furrows and the adjacent square. In other cases, it is inexpedient to make ridges, beds or ridges that rise above the surrounding area.

We will consider the choice of a place for planting dahlias in order to obtain the greatest decorative effect on the backyards of flower lovers.

If you have taken dahlia seedlings, you should wait until mid-May with the landing.

Dahlias, like any flower plant, are not protected from various diseases and pests. Therefore, the issue of protection should be approached responsibly.

Choosing a place for planting dahlias

As a soil, the best option would be a mixture of peat, sand and perlite. Land should be pre-watered. If the planting container is plastic, then it is desirable to make holes in it. From above, the planted seeds are sprinkled with sand mixed with the ground and sprayed from a spray bottle.

Beautiful plants with gorgeous flowers are not whimsical, but they are always able to give us petals of different sizes, amazing shades and delicate aroma.

The fewer shoots will grow from one stem, the more developed they will be. It is for this reason, and in order to get beautiful and strong flowers, we also need pasynkovanie. It is required to carry it out at an early age, when the extra ones are removed from the bush - weak and broken stems, which only pull on life-giving juices, but do not bring any result. Experts recommend leaving only a few stalks in the bush; this is an ideal option for a plant. Categories: Perennial Flowers Flowers for a bed

Planting dahlias

. In cuttings of plants, as a rule, one stalk is left, but sometimes, in order to impart a bushiness of the bush, the top of the plant is pinched over the third node, and the plant develops in two stalks.

Cuttings and hybrid seedlings are usually planted deeper, up to 8-10 cm

In the southern regions with arid climate, they often arrange deep areas for dahlias, which are surrounded by earthen rollers on all sides so that it can be filled with water from aryk, water supply system or a well at night.

Dahlia Garter

Almost never problems with seedlings. It is well developed and well-tolerated pick.

Gorgeous collar dahlias in your garden

To tie up the flowers is necessary for the reason that they easily break when strong gusts of wind. This should be done during the period of maturation, when the sprouts are just beginning to reach for the sun. Agree, it is much easier to install a small peg and organize a garter in advance, rather than later, when the plant becomes an adult and blooms, spoil its root system with a slip of the garter peg.

Watering and fertilizing

Dahlias are not distinguished by capriciousness and can survive perfectly even in the shade of larger plants. Georges are allowed to grow on almost any soil: black soil, sand, as well as clay. However, the chernozem and clay, when dry, become very strong, dense, which complicates the formation of the root system, and when dried they become covered with cracks and tear the roots of the plants.

In large-sized dahlia varieties, to increase the size of the inflorescences, remove all lateral shoots that appear from the leaf axils, the so-called stepchildren.

. Cherenkovye plants better to plant two plants under each stake. At the same time be sure to take into account the growth of plants. Fertilizers can act on plants in different ways.

Our recommendations relate, first of all, to the middle zone of the former USSR, as well as to localities close in climatic conditions to the middle belt

Overheating protection

Planting sprouted rhizomes begins with the preparation of wells for planting up to 30 cm deep, which are poured abundantly with water. Before planting a dahlia in the hole, place a stake to which you will then tie up the bush. After planting a tuber, it is not desirable to drive in a stake: this can damage the root system of a plant.

In addition, it helps well in the fight against certain diseases, in particular, with fusarium, soil liming. From this unpleasant and fairly frequent disease, the tops and buds of dahlia begin to fade, browning of the lower parts of the plant occurs.

It is important not to overmoisten the seedlings, sprinkling it moderately.

This species has a serious difference from other species and varieties, as it is considered the only owner of original, thin and long petals in flowers.

Caring for dahlias in the fall

Dahlias are demanding systematic and very proper watering.

For dahlias, the root system develops well in friable soil, so it is necessary to add peat and river sand — 1/6 to the size of the fossa, in which the dahlia tuber is planted (clay dimensions 30X30X30) —in clay, as well as black soil. centimeters). If the soil is sandy, then for 1 hole it is necessary to add land in the amount of one bucket and quickly shovel with sand.

. If you leave all stepchildren developing on the stem, especially in its lower part, flowering slows down and decreases, the size of the inflorescences decreases. Therefore, they should be removed at the very beginning of appearance and possibly closer to the stem. In addition, the lower shoots often break off from the main stem, which increases the possibility of parasitic fungi falling into the affected areas of the spores, and this can lead to the death of the entire ground part of the plant, especially in wet rainy weather.

Needle Dahlia

(For example, Middle and South Urals, southern regions of Western Siberia, Altai, Kha-barovsky (southern part) and Primorsky Krai, Belarus, Baltic republics, north-western part of Ukraine, etc. For the southern regions and territories of Russia, Ukraine For the Caucasus and especially the Central Asian republics, it is necessary to make appropriate amendments both in terms of planting and harvesting, and in agrotechnology.

As fertilizer for poor soil, rotted manure is put into the hole with the ground, then the tuber is lowered and covered with soil. In order for the bushes to be lush, you need to feed the plant. The first feeding is carried out during the landing of tubers (laying a mullein in the hole). The second need to produce with the appearance of the first leaves. For her, we take either organic or stir manure with water.

Spherical Dahlia

The diseases of dahlias include fungal diseases, which contribute to shading and neglect of plantings. As a result of this disease, brown spots appear on the leaves, they gradually become dry and fall off.

Sowing seeds for seedlings can be performed at different times, starting in March and ending in April.

Anemone Dahlia

For disembarkation, the tubers are divided, cutting according to the root neck. It is better to divide before germination, so as not to aggravate the roots. In no way should one strive for a small division of the tuber: small parts develop disgustingly and give not enough inflorescences, besides bad ones. The stronger the root, that is, consists of 3 or 4 tubers, the more you can get from it full-bodied inflorescences of dahlias. Such a spine has the ability to run 2-3 stalks. If you let more, then the inflorescences will be much smaller.

Passyny-forge dahlias should be regularly, starting from the moment of planting in open ground and until butoon appear in the leaf axils of the main stems.

. Low plantations are planted in the first row, medium heights in the second, high and very high varieties in the third, and the shape, color and size of socially dahlia are also taken into account.

Selection of planting site and soil preparation

When choosing a place for planting dahlias, it is necessary to take into account some of their biological features: a relatively short growing season, a great need of these plants for moisture, which greatly increases with increasing ambient temperature, and the greater fragility of their herbaceous stems, requiring matching to the stakes

Early flowering can be achieved by staining. The ashes are called shoots that appear from the sinuses of the side leaves. Shoots are cut to the fourth pair of leaves: then your bush will be very lush.

Another disease - white rot, its signs of occurrence are shoot withering with the formation of spots on the stems. Also sometimes on dahlias wet bacterial and brown rot, leaf spot and other diseases may appear, which can be controlled by fungicides and other biological additives, as well as preventive agents.

After planting the seed containers should be covered with glass or plastic bags, and then put them in a bright, warm place. Shoots will not keep you waiting. They will appear in a few days. At emergence of shoots the shelter cleans up, but this procedure becomes gradually in process of germination of seedling.

Landing features

The incredible beauty of dahlias is simply amazing, because every flower is a real work of art with fleshy and rather large petals of charming shape.

Dahlias are demanding for systematic and very proper watering. This means that it will be necessary to water the plants often, but little by little. The soil around the plant should be moistened to a depth of only 25-30 cm, this will be quite enough. If you overdo it and organize the stagnation of moisture around the plant, diseases or death of the plant are possible, since the root system of dahlias does not tolerate excessive moisture.

To obtain a huge number of full-sized inflorescences, the creation of a dahlia bush is of paramount importance. The stepsons that arise in the leaf axils should be eliminated with the leaves, and from the 3rd-4th internodes it is allowed to leave the shoots until they provide inflorescences.

. As a rule, all stepchildren are removed to the internode preceding the node with bu-tones.

Planting is recommended in cloudy weather or in the evening

. During autumn plowing (digging), organic, especially insufficiently decomposed, fertilizers, for example, manure, peat-faeces, various composts, are introduced, while in spring plowing - wood ash, peat (aged), superphosphate. Sometimes, especially when there is a shortage of organic fertilizers, they bring in flower mixtures or other mixed fertilizers. Manure and composts contribute in amounts from about 3 to 6 kg per 1 m2, peat faeces and bird droppings - from 1 to 2 kg. Fertilizing the soil with ammonium and other nitrates, urea (synthetic urea), potassium salt, potassium chloride and the like is easily digestible chemicals when digging (plowing) is impractical because they are easily washed out of the arable layer and are not used by dahlias . However, potassium is recommended to be added to clayey soils.

The soil structure is improved by adding organic substances to it. Such additives can be manure (fresh or rotted), humus (sheet or manure), composts of various contents, peat, turfy ground, shear-cutting and other organic materials easily developed in the soil. To increase the water permeability of heavy, floating clay soils, sand (especially coarse-grained), gravel, peat, peat and stone-ash ash, and even small (pre-sieved and washed) coal slag, as well as other neutral materials can be introduced. .

When planting a wedge dahlia tuber, for strap garter, it is necessary to start immediately, so as not to destroy the roots afterwards.

. Cutting plants or plants grown from divided tubers, before sowing before planting, are poured heavily with water, and then take care of the earth with a clod of earth, trying not to damage the plants and not disrupting the clod, they live in a prepared hole. Ring-shaped holes are made around the planted plants, or the holes are completely barred, and they are incomplete to provide ease of irrigation. Later on, when tilling the soil, the well is gradually leveled, and furrows are made for irrigation. Planted plants are immediately tied to the stakes (depending on the height of the plant in 2-3 places and more). As the plants grow, the garter continues. Immediately when planting plants, a label with the name (or number) of the plant is attached to the vertex of the stake.

In the event that the soil prepared for planting dahlias is quite fertile, it is advisable to add fertilizer not to the whole area, but only in the pits during planting

It is recommended to add peat, clay, vermiculite and other moisture-absorbing materials to deep sandy soils, which even with frequent and intensive irrigation do not retain moisture in the upper layers of the soil.

It is necessary to choose a plot for planting dahlias in such a way as to ensure the most suitable microclimate for them.

Pest and disease control

The third time you need to feed dahlias in early June to strengthen the root system. After that, the soil around the bush should be periodically loosened so that the rhizome has access to oxygen. Constantly remove dead flowers, because they not only spoil the general appearance of the bush, but also prevent the emergence of new buds.

And the rules of planting and caring for hibiscus are described in detail in this article

For early lush flowering, dahlia seeds need to be planted in May

This species is the proud owner of lush inflorescences with petals of different lengths, which are arranged in several rings, forming a charming dahlia flower.

Unpretentious dahlias are demanding for watering and feeding

These flowers adore the wet base, it is impossible to allow its drying, as well as the formation of a crust from rain and watering, which requires mulching with sawdust with a small layer of six to nine centimeters.

Pompon, collar, dwarf and all small-flowered varieties of georgy are not stepson.

The use of dahlias in landscape design

. The fertilizer most suitable for this purpose is dung or leaf humus and compost mixed with wood ash or kiln soot. 3-4 tablespoons of ash are added to a bucket of humus or compost, mix well and pour about 1/4 of the mixture into each hole, mix it with soil and plant dahlias. Some breeders put fresh horse manure into the pits when planting dahlias as a fertilizer. This is done in the following way: stakes are installed in the pre-per-pan site in places designated for planting, a stake of 40X40X40 cm is dug out at each stake, 1/3 of a horse’s tail is put on the bottom of the pole, it is covered with earth and well compacted foot. Light humus soil is poured on top of this earth (from leaf and dung humus, with up to 20 g of superphosphate and a tablespoon of ash added to each hole). This mixture is well mixed, a hole 15 cm deep is made in it and filled with water. When the water in the hole is fully absorbed, pre-grown dahlias are planted.

Along the way, it should be noted that the presence of gravel and small stones in the soil usually does not hinder the normal development of dahlias.

For the rapid growth of plants, it is necessary to warm the soil and planted plants well in order to make the most of the relatively short growing season

If you have any questions about dahlias planting and care in the spring, you can refer to the video for clarity.

Dahlias, both annual and perennial, are widely used in the design of flower beds and rabatok. As a rule, they are planted in groups that combine different varieties. Separately planted dahlia bushes will also look beautiful.

After the dahlias have taken root, you should add fertilizing, consisting of half the dose of any complex fertilizer. Soon it will be necessary to make a nip above the fourth pair of leaves.

Dahlia after winter: sprouting

If you want to get a high-quality and really beautiful plant after planting, get ready to give it free time.

Dahlias are allowed to grow on almost any soil: black soil, sand, as well as clay

In many varieties of dahlias, due to the peculiarities of their budding, it is necessary to remove not only side shoots, but also extra buds, especially when dahlias are grown for cutting or for demonstration at exhibitions.

In the following days after planting, it is necessary to water the plants regularly and liberally

Dahlias - disembarkation and care

. Therefore, the dahlia planting area should be protected from the wind, and above all from the winds dominating in this area and especially “harmful” for dahlias. In the middle los and in the eastern regions of the former USSR, such winds are primarily the northern, northwestern, and northeastern, and for the southern and southeastern regions of the country - the northeastern, eastern, and southeastern (i.e. dry winds). Strong northerly, northwesterly or northeastern winds, especially at relatively low temperatures (+1-1-4 °), often lead to frosting of plants, especially freshly planted into the soil from greenhouses and greenhouses and not having time to get hardened. Go

It is better to start preparing the soil for dahlias in the fall, namely, to dig up the soil to a depth of about 30 cm and introduce mineral fertilizers (superphosphate and potassium sulfate) and humus. Two weeks before the day when it plans to plant dahlias in the open ground in spring, it is advisable to dig up the shrubbery again, but not so deep, about 20 cm, and fertilize again.

The most popular varieties of annual dahlias include such varieties as "Jolly Fellows", "Figaro Mix", Harlequin Mix "and" Piccolo Mignon Mix ".

Seedlings can be planted in open ground after the end of all frosts. The distance between the bushes should be 30-60 centimeters, depending on their size.

Masterpiece flowers are hard to say, even what they resemble. Most likely, this is the creation of some forces, the existence of which we can only guess. An elegant, beautiful and truly unforgettable flower will be a real decoration of the garden.

Soil preparation for dahlia

If during planting dahlias, the wells were not fertilized, then the first application of fertilizers should follow within 1-2 weeks after planting. Initially, you should feed the plant with organic matter, and do it right. From different sides of the bush you will need to dig 2-4 holes, the depth of the shovels in the bayonet, bring the organics exactly there and just fall asleep with earth.

Storing tubers in winter

Dahlias are not whimsical and can survive well even in the shade of larger plants, but it should be understood that in this case loss of flowering quality is possible. Therefore, dahlias are planted in partial shade, for example, near small bushes, hedges, or in those places where partial shade is possible. Thus, you will not lose in the beauty of the bush, but will receive abundant flowering.

Usually, dahlias on the color-tonosny shoot buds are formed in groups of three, of which the average bud develops faster, but it often has a shorter peduncle, sometimes not very suitable for cutting

. The frequency of irrigation is regulated depending on the temperature and humidity.

Terms of planting dahlias in open ground depend on the climatic conditions of the area.

Annual dahlias: planting and care

If the soil on which dahlias are to be planted, which is not structural and there are no sufficient organic substances that improve the structure, is presently available, temporarily local improvement of the structure in the pits.

In the southern and southeastern regions, strong winds, non-existent dry and heated air, dry up the plants and the soil and can lead to drying (burning) of young leaves and the top of the stems of dahlias.

In the autumn after severe frosts, when the stem dies, the tubers are prepared for storage in winter. This period usually falls on the end of September - the beginning of October. Tubers are removed from the soil, the stem is cut to 10 cm. After that, all the tubers need to be decomposed to dry. If there is no greenhouse in which this can be done, find a room to decompose the tubers, opening all the windows and doors.

Site selection

In landscape design, dahlias are used as a soliter plant and in combination with other plants. In order for the seedlings to get acclimatized, it is recommended to cover it with a special thin covering material for a couple of days or, as many gardeners do, with dark plastic bottles in which holes have been previously made for normal air ventilation.

Unique anemone-shaped dahlias on the summer cottage

If fertilizers were applied while planting dahlias, the following soil fertilizer can be transferred for about a month. During this period, the plant will spend a lot of effort on the production of a strong green bush and require fertilizing.

It is advisable not to plant flowers in the soil, where the humidity level can constantly increase, it is very harmful for the root system. Also, when planting, experts recommend working with drainage, to make it out of expanded clay or broken brick.. The average bud in such cases must be removed, then longer buds with lush buds grow from the side buds. In dahlias of powerful development, regardless of their height, except for the stepsons, they remove some of the lower leaves if they cover the root collar. This contributes to the better maturation of tubers and does not allow a strong thickening of the trunk. In dry and hot weather, watering is done daily for the first week after planting, later on less frequently, but with such a calculation that the soil under the dahlias always remains wet.In the middle zone, dahlias are planted in open ground after June 1-10 by grown plants

Usually, gardeners and amateur growers face difficulties in preparing the soil for planting dahlias when cultivating newly allocated plots in collective gardens. Such plots are allotted, as a rule, on field, meadow or forest lands. In such areas, most often the arable layer is thin, or the earth is virgin (or deposit) with a thin layer of humus and podzolic or clay subsoil at a depth of 10-15 cm. Such soils very often have strong or very strong acidity (pH 5 -four). Although dahlias do tolerate excess and lack of acidity in the soil, they grow and bloom best on weakly acid and neutral soils. It inhibits the development of dahlias and strong alkaline soil. The best thing for beginners is to analyze the soil for acidity. At pH 4-5 it is necessary to add hydrated lime in an amount of from 30 to 100 kg per 100 m2 of area. Soils are strongly alkaline with a pH of more than 8.5 and are required to acidify. It is best to introduce peat for this purpose..After drying, shorten the stem to 4 cm and cut off all the roots, and sprinkle the cut sections with quicklime. After that, the tubers are stored in this state for another week at a temperature of 19-25 ° C.If you take curbs, ribbons or small rabatki, then it is customary to plant low-growing varieties of dahlias so that they do not obscure other flowers and plants.Planting seeds in open ground in central Russia is recommended at the end of May. This is explained by the fact that planting seeds at a later date will lead to the fact that the dahlia will start flowering no earlier than August. Planted seeds should be covered with plastic wrap until germination.

Planting and caring for dahlias is a time that you will spend with benefit, because it is not a pity to spend just a couple of hours a week on growing beautiful flowers.

From overheating the earth with the sun, the barrel circle of flowers should be covered with a roofing tile, an old board or cardboard. On hot days, the bushes are sprayed 2-3 times with warm water. Fading flowers are cut off in time. Dahlias are very responsive to foliar feeding (fifty to seventy grams are diluted to ten liters of water) and from the mullein infusion (one in ten).Dahlias require choosing the right place for planting

The formation of the bush begins after the appearance of stepsons or pinching the top after the fourth pair of leaves. Lack of moisture, especially in dry hot weather, leads to slower growth, lignification of the stem, deterioration of flowering and loss of decorativeness of dahlias, which usually recover slowly only with the onset of more cold and rainy weather.. Dahlias can be planted earlier, as soon as the soil warms up sufficiently, from about May 15-20, with uncharacterized divided tubers with pronounced eyes. For forest and meadow podzolic soils, good results are obtained when a leaf is introduced into the soil during autumn recollection and lime - during spring digging. It should be immediately made clear that the simultaneous introduction of fresh manure or non-reversed leaf and lime is undesirable, as freshly slaked lime delays the activity of soil bacteria and prevents the rapid decomposition of manure or leaf. The plot intended for planting dahlias is deeply (30-35 cm) plowed or dug in the fall. In the spring, 2-3 weeks before the planting date, the dahlia plowed up the land or re-dig it again, carefully loosening and boroning.© Cillas

Tubers can be stored in the basement, cellar and even an apartment. At a humidity of 70%, tubers are recommended to be placed in sand, peat or sawdust of coniferous trees. Coniferous sawdust is poured for storage in the basement on the wooden flooring. If you keep in an apartment, the tubers should be laid out in plastic bags with peat, vermiculite or perlite and tightly closed. The best way to store is to put it in boxes with paper and a thin layer of earth.

When shoots appear, the strongest are left (one or two), the others break out on cuttings. When a pair of leaves appears, the top is pinched, two stems grow, and the top of the second pair of leaves is pinned again, four or eight of one or two fourth stems develop. With such a formation, the height of a bush usually does not exceed 1 m, although its varietal feature is a height of more than 160 cm. In the same way, plants are formed for exhibitions. Pa-sapling is conducted in the usual way, like in other plants.

In this case, prepare shelters from frost.

. To determine the need for dahlias in mineral fertilizers, it is necessary to conduct a chemical analysis of the soil at least once every two to three years. Soil analysis is carried out at soil-agrotechnical laboratories at district agricultural departments or branches of the Society for the Protection of Nature, as well as at state and collective farms where there are agricultural laboratories. According to the analysis data, the soil demand for mineral and organic fertilizers in the coming years is determined on the site. Soils that have been receiving organic fertilizers that are rich in humus for many years in a row require these fertilizers to a lesser extent than recently developed soils that did not receive organic fertilizers before.

Under dahlias fertilizers are applied in three main ways:

Planting dahlias near (in the zone of the root system) and under the canopy of large trees is unallowable, since in this case the dahlias bloom poorly and do not form viable root cropsWith the advent of two leaves, the plant is transplanted and only closer to the summer the seedlings land in a permanent place in the sun.Planting tubers in pots for germination begins in the spring, namely in April-May, depending on the climate and frost. • Also, dahlias are wonderful in vases, with proper care - up to 1 month. To plant these beautiful flowers, it is necessary to conduct proper preparation of tubers after winter storage.
  • To prepare the tubers for landing pull out the crates from the basement where they were kept all winter. Carefully inspect all planting material. All affected and rotten places cut off with a sharp knife and process the cuts with wood ash or brilliant green. You can also treat with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, dropping the tubers for 30 minutes in a pink solution.
  • Place the tubers in the boxes, cover with soil and slightly moisten the soil. This will allow germination and grafting for faster shoots, as dahlias are planted in open ground after the threat of freezing has passed. But when dusting the tubers, do not forget that the upper part should protrude no less than 3 cm above the ground. If you hold a deeper powder, the neck of the tubers will start to rot, which will lead to complete damage to the whole tuber.

  • When transplanting into the ground follow the same rule - do not deepen too germinated dahlias.
  • The second way to prepare dahlia tubers is to use a landing without prior germination. To do this, one week before planting the tubers in open ground or under film cover, remove them from storage, inspect, remove all rotted places, process with wood ash or green paint, take them out to the open air in boxes. Moisten the tubers slightly with a spray. Spraying spend daily.
  • After 7 days, after the tubers get a little used to the lighting and are saturated with moisture, land them in a permanent place.
  • Without sprouting dahlias, make a landing 10 days earlier than with the method of preparation with germination.

What to consider when splitting tubers? Especially large tubers are always divided, they would otherwise develop flowers and a lot of leaves. Dahlia: the right location

Here you will find tips for landing at a factory from Central America. If you want to plant in your dahlias, choose a flower with unusual shapes and colors. If you plant dahlias, you should put them in normal moist soil. Optimal - slightly acidic soil with a pH value of about 6, the soil should not be too loamy, as dahlias do not tolerate tricks. Plants prefer a lot of sun, so too shaded area does not get them well. Typically, such as a temperate climate with regular humidity.

There is nothing difficult about how to plant dahlias in the ground in spring. It will be enough to follow a few simple rules before planting of tubers, and soon these bright flowers will decorate your garden. There are three types of dahlias - early, middle and late. Early and medium varieties can begin to be germinated in mid-March, but, of course, not in open ground. To do this, you will need containers filled with loose nutrient soil.

Incidentally, they are not winter proofs due to their Latin origin and should be excavated during the cold season and in the winter in a warm place. Others are suitable in bed as beautiful dahlia neighbors: strong contrast is, for example, orange dahlias with blue iron husks and a lark. When you combine related colors in bed, you create a harmonious image — purple dahlia pompons, for example, go well with delicate pink lobelia.

Dahlia, to suppress, is actually quite simple, if it is known that tubers are not winter. For this reason, they must be brought to a warm house in advance of the cold. As a rule, the tubers are in the soil until the fall, and then persist approximately to about Approximately depending on climatic conditions. This is the cause of the general overmoistening of dahlias.

When we plant dahlias in the spring first in containers, this allows us to get a flowering plant much earlier than if it were planted directly in the ground. These flowers are thermophilic, and the spring planting of dahlias in the ground begins no earlier than May. For medium and late varieties germination in containers is not necessary, they will have time to bloom on time and in open ground, if you do not delay the planting dates.

During excavations, wait until the dahlia leaves are wilted and the soil is dry. The excavated tubers are then simply stored in a frost-free place where reindeer hibernate. But be careful: already overcooked dahlias should sort them better and put them in compost to ensure optimal wintering of dahlias.

How to plant tubers in open ground?

The optimal planting distance depends on the variety, whereas for low-growing dahlias about 30 centimeters should be observed, for an average height of about 60 centimeters and for very high height up to one meter. Place tubers about five inches deep and cover them. It is especially important that you do not water the tubers immediately after their introduction, as they may rot. Pour only when the first shoots appear, and the soil is dry.

How to plant dahlias in the spring?

First of all, you should prepare the tubers for planting. It consists of cleaning up the damaged parts and dividing into parts a large knot of tubers that was dug out in the fall. For planting in one well leave two tubers with sprouts. This will produce a strong plant that will give a lot of buds. If you leave a greater number of nodules, they will give a lot of small shoots that will interfere with each other’s development and nothing good will come of it. It is advisable to sprinkle the slices with charcoal.

Dahlias are a great addition to any garden. Thanks to a wide selection of different colors, heights and sizes of colors, there is something for every taste. Dahlias bloom from summer to first frost very lush. So that you can enjoy your dahlias optimally, we give you useful tips on planting and care!

Since they are planted underground, late night frost will not harm them. Usually the night frost is no longer present. Do not plant the tubers too deep. Already quite thin layer of soil over the tubers. Place the stick next to the dahlias during planting. This allows you to tie dahlias that later need support. If you install the sticks later, you may damage the tubers. Georgites love the sun and permeable soil. Once the dahlia buds are formed, regularly remove the side shoots between the upper 2 or 3 axes of the leaves. Beautiful flowers on longer stems that arise in this way are also ideal, like cut flowers in a vase. If you use them as cut flowers, keep the stems in boiling water for a few seconds. Give dahlias additional nutrients in the form of fertilizer and water. Choose a tip from a plant when it has three or four leaves. Thus, the plant becomes more dense. Place a layer of compost on the soil around the plant so that the soil remains moist and the weeds are less likely. Remove the weed that is still growing with your hand. Do not damage the roots. Tie dahlias above 80 cm for extra support on a stick. Remove the lateral dahlia buds with your fingers. So you get big flowers. Let them dry for several hours, and then cover them with sawdust or dry sand. In winter, keep the tubers without frost in the box.

  • Remove dahlias from the beginning of March in a potted house.
  • From mid-May, pots can go out.
  • They look great on the terrace or even buried in bed.
  • Immerse the dahlia tubers in a bucket of water before planting them in the soil in the garden.
  • Dilute the shoots of dahlias that have just come out of the ground.
  • Remove both the leaf and the flower!
Dahlias do not tolerate tricks.

If any of the tubers has rotted or has any damage, then it must be safely thrown away so that there is no infection of healthy rhizomes. To do this, they are separated from healthy parts with a sharp knife, and the remaining tubers that will be planted are soaked for half an hour in a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

After that, the tubers must be given several days to adapt to the ambient temperature and wake up the kidneys, if the shoots have not yet moved into growth. Tubers sprinkled with a small amount of fresh loose earth or sawdust and moisturize well. In the daytime, tanks with tubers are kept either in the greenhouse or in the air, but not under direct sunlight, and are brought into the room at night.

Georgians may drink or swell at home

Loosen the soil and give mature compost, cattle or some horny chips into the holes of the plants. Make a few holes in the factory a few days ago. Then the nutrients spread better on the ground. For hasty gardeners, the following expert advice is helpful. They put the tubers in warm water for two days before planting and allow them to swell.

Also in the house before dahlias were located. Sprinkle the tubers gently with a small amount of water and place them in a warm, bright place. It may not be allowed to go outside if no frost is really expected. Tender shoots freeze very quickly. Wait until landing is better by the end of May.

Once the soil warms to 10-15 degrees, you can start planting dahlias in the ground. To do this, make either the grooves (they put the tubers at the same distance), or holes (which is more convenient and not so laborious). The distance between plants depends on the variety - the taller the shrub, the more it should be. For undersized varieties, about 30 centimeters should be retreated, and for giants, 80 centimeters will be just right.

Dahlias do not grow too deep

A vegetation hole deep enough to dig a dahlia breast with a root neck up to fill the ground. Carefully enter the Georgians. . How deep the tubers are sown in the soil depends on the type of dahlia and the size of the tubers. The holes for the plants must be so deep that the tuber has a good place in it, and several centimeters of soil can be distributed over the root neck.

Place the root collar in the hole of the plant. New shoots are developing at the root of Georgins. If it is too deep in the soil, the shoots need to grow on the surface for a very long time. Only when night frosts do not occur, dahlias and strawberries of gladioli should be placed in the soil, this usually occurs after the Ice Saints. Too early, the tubers are very quickly affected by frost damage, which has a significant effect on the enjoyment of flowering. Partially, the tubers can even completely collapse.

The depth of the hole is about 10 centimeters, a sprouted nodule should not be buried deep in the ground. If the ground is dry, it should be plentifully poured directly into the hole before planting. The nodules are planted horizontally so that the plant grows a powerful root system.

Spring dahlia care

After dahlias are planted, do not bother them too much with their care. It will be enough to weed weeds that select nutrients from the soil. Watering is also not particularly necessary, because in the spring the soil still contains a sufficient amount of moisture. The exception can only be hot weather in May. After watering, it is necessary to loosen the soil over the plantings so that oxygen can easily get into it, and there are no obstacles to the germination of young greenery.

Gladiols and dahlias are available in countless beautiful color variations, they are particularly suitable for full beds, group plants or front garden drains, where they always present an attractive look. When they are inserted, they must be intact, possibly dirty places should be cut. High, medium and dwarf dahlias are available in dahlias, the latter is only about 30 cm in height, while other types of dahlias reach just over one meter in height, high varieties provide 1, 20 or 1, 30 meters.

When the seedlings are sufficiently grown, it is necessary to leave only two of the most powerful shoots and to make a strawberry during the entire growing season to get large buds. Do not abuse fertilizers in early spring, otherwise the plant will increase a large green mass, but the flowers will be small.

| My Compound

Dahlias are perennial plants which are removed from the ground for the winter. There is an opinion that these flowers are not as popular with us as in Canada, but, nevertheless, many gardeners do it with pleasure growing perennial dahlias . After all, these flowers have a varied color, plus the whole bloom continues until frost. The height of dahlias can be completely different from 30 cm to 2 m. As for reproduction, cuttings, division of tubers, and also vegetative reproduction are used. There are amateurs who propagate dahlias with seeds, but this method is more suitable for breeders.

Preparing dahlias for planting

They are excellent cut flowers, and are also suitable for bathrooms and flower boxes. Dahlias prefer loose, moist soil. By the way, dahlia connoisseurs immediately remove all the inflorescences immediately after flowering in order to stimulate even more flowers. Gladiolate worms are also extremely sensitive to cold. Experienced gardeners have even placed them in the ground since May. They have a very high need for water, as well as cut flowers.

In the garden with glazes and dahlias should pay attention to the infection of snails, which can cause young shoots. Fertilization can be performed, some composts, horn chips or peat in the plant hole are already sufficient. For security reasons, freshly harvested tubers can still be protected by fleece above the ground until May. Another tip: if you want to have as much joy as possible in blooming gladioli and dahlias, you can stage by stage, then the plants bloom in time. Special planters of tubers are very useful in large quantities: they prepare a large enough hole for installation and at the same time provide the ground for covering.

When to plant dahlias in spring in open ground?

Dahlias, gladioli and other tubers stand against the background of summer flower splendor. But preparations for the summer bloom may already begin in March. If tubers wake up in March from the cold season, and if plants are not yet a choice, then club plants, such as glaucoma and dahlias, are a good choice.

When do the tubers wake up: do they plant or prefer dahlias?

The tubers of St. George and Gladiolus spent the cold season in frost-free winter quarters. As the temperature rises, the tubers awaken and show the first arrows for shooting, especially under too warm and dark storage conditions. Further storage may lead to erosion of the shoots and, in the case of increased humidity, to fungal infections. However, in March it is still early to strip in the open air. Late frosts can cause serious damage to frost-sensitive tubers. If, therefore, it is still impossible to plant dahlias, the second solution is to promote dahlias and other tubers - the only solution to this problem.

Choosing a place for landing

For planting perennial dahlias you need to choose a site that is protected from the winds and well lit. It must be remembered that the places located in the lowlands, also under the trees with a wide crown, are considered unsuitable. In addition to shading the flowers, the soil will also be depleted. Also worth knowing that planting dahlias in one place is not worth more than two years. Otherwise, pests and diseases characteristic of these plants will simply accumulate in the soil, which will negatively affect both growth in general and flowering.

Proper planting dahlias - timing

If we talk about planting dates, they depend on the region. Landing can be practiced from mid-May to mid-June. But in the case of the threat of spring frost they should be covered. Even if the first shoots were damaged by frost, you should not worry too much, because new ones will soon appear instead. Only one minus in this moment, flowering will begin a little later.

In dahlias, an underdeveloped root system and in order to ensure a sufficiently large vegetative part during the entire vegetative period, the plant must be provided with a sufficient amount of not only moisture but also nutrients. This will allow the tubers to mature well. The distance between the plants in a row can be in the range of 60-100 cm, at least a meter between the rows. Do not forget about the installation of stakes, which should have a height of about 180 cm. This can be either a metal pipe or fittings or wooden bars. Plants are planted near stakes.

Feeding Dahlia

During the summer, dahlias need to be fed three times. The first dressing is needed as soon as the plants start to grow well, the second during the budding period, and the third before the start of flowering. Top dressing is prepared from mullein. To do this, you need to pour a pair of mullein buckets into a suitable container and pour about 7 buckets of water. The whole thing is stirred. A week later, when the fertilizer being prepared is fermenting, you need to take 3 liters of liquid and 7 liters of water and add another 45 g of mineral mixture and 20 g of wood ash. Depending on the size and age of the dahlia bush, it is necessary to add the prepared solution in the volume of 1-5 liters.

Preparation of dahlia tubers for planting

Dahlias before planting first need to germinate. To do this, the tubers in the beginning of April are entered in the room. They are placed in a prepared container. This may be, for example, a box with sawdust poured into it. Tubers are laid in such a way that the root collar is not covered with sawdust. Moistening is required periodically. After the shoots start to appear, you need to do the division. As a result, you should get on every part of the tuber and part of the root collar. As mentioned at the beginning of the article dahlias can be propagated by cutting, which is carried out from March to May. Too late to perform the procedure is not worth it, because simply the plant will not have tubers or they will not gain enough strength, which can lead to their death during winter storage. For rooting cuttings use mini-greenhouses with a temperature of + 18 ° C, while you need to take care of high humidity. As for the care of cuttings, it is not complicated. They must be timely sprayed with water and watered.

Digging and storing dahlia in winter

Dahlias need to dig up before the cold comes. Flowers bloom before the first frost, but after them the leaves are already damaged and should be dug out for storage. The stem is left 15 cm long from the ground. After digging up, the tubers should be washed in a solution of potassium permanganate and then dried. Concerning storing dahlia in winter then it can be just a basement with a temperature of about + 5 ° С. You can store tubers directly on the shelves or in suitable boxes. But you should not dump them on a bunch. If there is poor ventilation and high humidity in the room, a gray patina may appear on the tubers, which is gray mold. It is necessary to try so that the temperature does not rise above + 5 ° С. Those places on the tubers that were affected should be cleaned and treated throughout the winter with a 0.5% solution of copper oxychloride when spraying. Spray need once a week.

During the cultivation of dahlias may be subject to diseases such as fusarium or powdery mildew. On the fight against powdery mildew, more can be found in this article . In relation to dahlias, sulfur powder and bordeaux liquid are used to combat diseases. After reviewing the material described above, planting dahlias with tubers , the care and storage of this plant will not now seem to be something supernatural and everyone will be able to grow this beautiful flower in its own area.

  1. Digging and storing dahlia tubers

When to get dahlias from winter storage?

At the beginning of April, I take overwintered tubers from the winter storage and start preparing for planting dahlia in spring . If March was warm, then do it before. After all, the earlier the dahlia sprouting begins, the sooner we get the first flower.

Sprouting dahlia

Sprouting dahlia can be done in various ways. But I prefer this method. On a site in some place that is not used for the next two to three weeks, I dig a trench to the depth of a two-bayonet spade bayonet. I put there the tubers, separating them by grade. I put the dahlia tubers on the ground and just throw in pieces of plastic film on top so as to form a kind of greenhouse. The film simply lies on the dry trimming of the dahlia trunks, which I leave in the fall when I dig up the bushes. Their height is about 20 cm.

On the edges of the film I sprinkle with earth. In this form, the tuber roots of dahlias can be left for two to three weeks, until the green shoots appear. As a rule, watering is not required, since the moisture contained in the soil is sufficient for germination of the sprouts. It is only necessary to ensure that the green shoots that appear are not burnt in sunny weather. Therefore, when they appear, it is advisable to remove the film, covering it only for the night or when waiting for frosts.

Cooking dahlias for planting in spring

As soon as the first shoots appear, I start dividing dahlias (tubers). I dig them up, rinse them under running water. I cut the roots with a sharp knife so that the tuber with the neck has one or more shoots. Depending on the variety, it is possible to get from three to ten tubers with sprouts from one bush. Divided in this way, dahlia roots should preferably be treated in a pink manganese-potassium solution before planting.

Dahlia division I consider it a mandatory operation in preparation for landing. In no case should not plant a bush of dahlias entirely! There are several reasons for this.

First, when dividing the dahlia tubers, wound reactions occur, dramatically increasing the protective functions of the plant and contributing to the rejuvenation of the tubers.

Secondly, a large number of sprouts are waking up at the root, which will simply thicken the future dahlia shrub. As a result, the main trunks of the plant will be stretched and thinned, and the growth will simply be thin and brittle.

Thirdly, division allows breeding a variety.

How to plant dahlias?

For planting dahlias I prepare deep holes: a spade bayonet with a depth and a diameter of two bayonets. I give dimensions not in centimeters, so that it is easier to navigate. The width of a spade bayonet is usually 20 cm, and its length is 25-28 cm.

I fill the dug hole with humus or compost. If there are complex fertilizers (nitroammofosk, TO WHOM, etc.), it is good to add them at the rate of 50 grams per well. Then all this is thoroughly mixed together with part of the excavated earth. In the prepared place I plant the separated tuber of dahlias with a sprout and sprinkle it on the ground so that the place of attachment of the sprout to the neck of the tuber is turned into the soil at least 5 cm. The earth is filled up so that a shallow hole remains. If the ground is not too dry, watering is not required. If at the time when you plant dahlias, the shoots on the divided root had time to throw out the leaves, after the operation, they can slightly attach. In this case, when planting should be planted a little tuber.

When to plant dahlias?

When to plant dahlias prepared for planting in this way? As a rule, I planted sprouted and divided dahlias in open ground in the first half of May. If frosts happen at the end of May, then it is necessary to arrange the right-night shelters of plastic bags, old buckets. Five-liter plastic bottles are very well suited for such shelter.

... And of course dahlias!

There are many beautiful legends and one of them says that they appeared on the site of the last dying fire, when the ice age came, as a sign that the cold is not eternal, that life and joy on earth will return.

These beautiful and such different flowers will decorate your garden in various colors, will brighten up the gloomy days of autumn, and a bouquet of dahlias will enliven the interior, fill it with light not worse than the sun's rays.

In order for them to please you with their lush flowering, you need to know how to plant and care for them.

Известно более 15 тыс. varieties that are classified according to the form of inflorescences.

In this regard, the following garden groups are distinguished:

  • Non-shag, or Minion (varieties Sneezy, Yellow Hammer, Murilio),
  • Anemone (Commet, Servina),
  • Collar (Alsterguss, Claire de Lune),
  • Peony (Scarlet Beauty, Little Dream, Twiling Time),
  • Decorative (Contraste, Kelvin Floodlight, Procyon),
  • Spherical (Eveline, Cherida),
  • Pompon (New Baby, Buntling, Noreen),
  • Cactus (Irish Visit, Doris Day, Walhalla),
  • Chrysanthemum, or Semi-Acacia (Apache, Ambition, Top Choice),
  • Miniature (Bambino, Little John, Red Riding Hood),
  • Mixed.

Breeding methods

Seed propagation is used for breeding stunted dahlias with non-double and collar flowers, which are used as pilots. Seeds are sown in March for seedlings, planted outside in early June. Usually it is a mixture of inflorescence coloring ("Funny guys"). They do not give tubers.

The remaining dahlias are propagated by dividing the nest of root crops, green cuttings, rarely by grafting.

The division is carried out before planting in open ground in early May or earlier. if you plan to grow them in pots for earlier flowering. Before dividing, the temperature is increased to 15 ° C, the root crops are cut along the stem with a sharp knife into 2-4 pieces, the cuts are covered with charcoal and sulfur (1: 1). As a result, the delenka should consist of 1-2 tubers, 1-2 buds and parts of a perennial stem.

The cutting is carried out in closed ground from the end of February to the middle of April. . Korneklubni is disinfected with a solution of potassium permanganate, placed in boxes and covered with light nutrient soil, watered, kept warm (20-25˚ C). As a result, the buds germinate, the temperature is reduced (15 ° C).

The sprout shoots are used on cuttings. Their length is about 10 cm, they contain 2-3 internodes, the apical bud, the lower section is carried out under the leaf, and preferably with a piece of root-neck tissue.

Rooted cuttings in a mixture of peat and sand (2: 1) at room temperature for 2-2.5 weeks. Then they are transplanted into pots, grown and planted in the street in early June, along with seedlings.

Growing dahlias from cuttings contributes to their better growth and abundant flowering.

How and when to plant dahlias?

For planting choose solar, protected from strong winds areas. Sandy and heavy soils are not suitable, they must be fertile, slightly acidic or neutral.

It is advisable to prepare the site in the fall, dig it up, add humus or compost (per 1 sq. M 15-20 kg), 20-30 g of superphosphate, 200-300 pick up on acidic soils. 2-3 weeks before planting dahlias, 20-30 g of potash fertilizers are applied in the spring.

How to plant dahlias ? Depending on the height of the variety, the distance between the plants is 25-80 cm. For each plant, a hole is made, and for tall ones, a peg is driven in immediately. Korneklubni sprinkled with 3-5 cm of soil, seedlings and cuttings deepen to the first pair of leaves.

Caring for plants. How to save dahlias?

The plant requires a high content of fertilizers, so we spend two feeding:

  • in the phase of budding - complex fertilizer in the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium 2: 1: 1,
  • at the beginning of flowering - phosphate-potassium fertilizer (1: 1).

In all varieties, it is necessary to carry out a formation that provides abundant flowering. If they planted a rootclub, then 2 strong shoots are left on the plant during regrowth. The rest break out at the base. At dahlias from cuttings 1 stalk is left.

Pashing is performed, i.e. remove side shoots up to the 4th pair of leaves from below. Low-growing varieties do not stepchildren. In the second half of the summer, it is desirable to remove the leaves in the lower part of the plant, to spud the stem to a height of 10-15 cm.

Korneklubni annually dig in late September - early October after the first autumn frosts. In this case, the stems are cut, the remaining parts of the plant are dried for 10-12 days at room temperature. The storage of dahlia tubers in winter is carried out at 3-7 ° C and humidity of 60-75%.

The use of dahlias depends on their height. . Low-growing - in borders, rabatkah, arrays. Tall - in groups, tapeworms, ordinary plantings. Also planted next to annual and perennial asters, zinnias, lion's throat.

When used as a cut, inflorescences with long and strong peduncles are cut off at their full blooming.

Spring preplanting dahlias

Dahlias belong to the most beloved tuberous plants and to one of the brightest autumn major accents in garden design. But low frost resistance allows you to grow luxury stars only by digging them for the winter. The need to preserve plants in the premises and annually plant and dig up rhizomes - such is the small price for their luxurious flowering. But only to planting or digging these plants growing dahlias is not reduced.

Continuous monitoring is the most important point of care for dahlias. Even when the rhizomes overwinter, they need to look after: regular inspections, culling, fighting lesions, timely correction of conditions of detention - these are the measures by which dahlias can wait for the new season.

In winter, they are checked as often as the stored crop. Of particular danger is the period of the beginning of the calendar spring, when changes in temperature, humidity levels, fluctuations in conditions often lead to an increased risk of damage to the rhizomes of fungal diseases or their premature germination.

The main stages of preparing dahlias for planting

Pre-preparation of dahlias for planting is a set of measures that allow plants to adapt to the warm content and activate the processes of growth and development. In regions with mild winters, there is no need to germinate rhizomes, but in the middle lane you cannot do without it.

Thanks to spring preparation and germination, the growing season of dahlias does not begin at the time of planting, but several weeks earlier. Accordingly, the waiting time for flowering is shortened and the period when they can be enjoyed before the arrival of autumn colds increases.

Spring preparation of tubers includes several stages:

  1. Adapting dahlias to the conditions in which they will germinate,
  2. Inspection and treatment of rhizomes,
  3. Sprouting dahlia rhizomes before planting,
  4. Preparing for landing.

The optimal time for germination

Sprouting in dahlia takes a fairly short period. To reach the stage of development at which plants need to be transplanted into the soil, 10-15 days is enough. In accordance with this, the start time of the spring preparation is selected - 14-20 days before the expected planting date.

In the middle lane, germination is considered optimal at the end of April, beginning or mid-May (if flower growers are not ready to cover dahlias for an earlier planting). The milder the climate, the earlier the dahlia rhizomes begin to awaken.

In the south, the start of preparing dahlias for planting can be postponed to 6–8 days before planting, and the third item, germination, is removed from the plan, leaving only clearance, decontamination and preliminary adaptation.

Focusing on the timing of germination is necessary and based on the state of rhizomes: when buds begin to swell, you can not hesitate and continue to keep dahlias in the dark and cold, because the shoots will be very fragile and save them before planting will be very difficult.

If signs of arousal are visible on rhizomes in March or April, they should be started to be prepared for planting, at least in boxes or containers.

Peculiarities of Awakening Purchased Dahlias

Timing is easier to control when using your own dahlias, which check the condition during the winter. If you buy new varieties, the rhizome should be sought only from the second or third decade of April, so that you can make a full preparation for planting.

Buying dahlias earlier, the higher the risk of not keeping plants until the desired period. When choosing planting material, it is necessary to ensure that the tubers are at rest: any signals about the start of growth, loss of tissue density or the appearance of sprouts are undesirable. Buying awakened roots will lead to the fact that plants can not survive the landing, will be unviable because of its weakness.

Transitional period before germinating dahlia

As is the case with any garden plant that does not hibernate in the soil, but indoors, with dahlias, any abrupt changes in conditions and changes should be avoided. Like a kadotnyh exotics, before the beginning of spring germination dahlias will require a small "quarantine" - a period for adaptation to the changed environment. True, a few weeks and not talking: just a few days for a slow adaptation.

When transferring dahlia rhizomes to heat and light, plants should be left for an intermediate temperature for 2–3 days. This is quite enough to prevent a sharp temperature drop and reduce risks.

Adaptation to the change of conditions is necessary only when the difference between the temperatures in storage and for spring awakening is equal to or exceeds 10 degrees.

Inspection after wintering and preventive treatment

After a period of complete rest, before the removal of rhizomes and stimulation of awakening, you need to take care of hygienic measures, carefully examine the plants and prevent the spread of rot or disease. This is a kind of final monitoring of planting material - a more thorough inspection, similar to those that had to be carried out throughout the wintering period.

The main thing in the processing of dahlia rhizomes after winter is a thorough inspection and removal of all damaged, dead, dry parts, suspicious spots and unproductive root roots (separated, connected to the main rhizome, only thin roots of tubers without growth buds). Clearing should be done as carefully as possible.

If hygiene procedures were not carried out in the fall, then in order to assess the condition of the dahlia roots, to see the slightest damage, it is better to wash out all the planting material.

For cutting dry or damaged tissue, you must use sharp tools. As for the bulbous ones, pruning is not carried out to healthy tissues, but partially taking up part of normal layers.

Complete the procedure of cleaning and preparation need prophylactic treatment in a solution of fungicides. For dahlias, a simple solution of potassium permanganate with a concentration of 1% is perfect. Rhizomes soak everything completely (half an hour).

If you want to propagate dahlias, update them, increase flowering in old bushes, then after decontamination they carry out the separation of rhizomes. Hands or with the help of a knife separate areas with 1-2 buds, from which strong stems will develop. All sections are treated with wood ash and dried.

Secrets of planting dahlia

Selection of comfortable conditions is no less important than meeting the landing dates. Dahlias are grown on protected, warm, sunny areas, in places where there is no stagnation of air, but there are no strong winds. They are afraid of waterlogging of the soil and stagnation of water, they do not tolerate shading. The soil should be nutritious, high-quality, neutral, loamy or sandy loam with a high content of organic matter.

Dahlias are not planted in the same place for two years in a row.

Place for planting dahlias must be prepared in advance. Dig up the soil twice - in the fall and in the spring. Organic fertilizers, full mineral fertilizers are added to the soil, and, when required, loosening additives are applied either before planting or in advance.

The latter option is preferable, especially if the soil is depleted. Usually for dahlias, it is recommended to use rotted manure or compost, superphosphate, potassium sulfate and full mineral fertilizers. The addition of wood ash increases the resistance of plants to uncomfortable conditions.

When digging in the autumn, organics, potash and phosphate fertilizers are applied, in the spring - complex or nitrogenous and wood ashes. Dosage of fertilizers - 10-15 kg of organic matter and 1 tablespoon of each of the mineral fertilizers for each square meter of planting.

The timing of planting dahlias is directly dependent on the weather. It is possible to plant them into the soil only after the stable warm weather has been established and the return frost has gone. The air temperature during the day at the time of disembarkation dahlia should be kept at a stable mark of 14-16 degrees, and the soil should warm up at a depth of 25-30 cm.

In regions with severe winters, in particular, in the middle lane, landing is carried out in early June. Dahlias can be planted in May, but for short return frosts the plants will need to provide temporary shelters. It is advisable to finish planting during the first decade of May, because the later dahlias will be planted, the less they will bloom. In regions with mild winters, planting dahlias starts from the last decade of April and continues throughout May.

The main rule of planting dahlias - accuracy. The root collar, and the sprouts at the rootstocks are easy to damage, the plants require careful installation and control of the level of burial. It is necessary to monitor exactly how the rhizomes will be established and not to cause them unnecessary injuries, not to hurry anywhere and not to show negligence.

Getting a dahlia is nothing complicated:

  • For plants, individual planting pits are dug, the wells are of such depth that the rhizome with slight burial stares in them without injury. Usually for planting dahlias dig up planting holes about 40 cm deep. The distance to neighboring plants and between bushes is calculated based on the estimated height of the bush. The average distance is from 30 to 80 cm.
  • If the soil is not improved in advance, organic and mineral fertilizers mixed with the soil are applied to the bottom of the wells (1 tablespoon of full mineral fertilizers, a small handful of ashes, about a third of the compost bucket). They are mixed with soil and laid in the landing hole.
  • If growing high and sprawling varieties, reliably establish supports for garter dahlia. The support can be installed only before planting, so even in case of doubts about its necessity, it is better to install the peg in advance.
  • Planting pits plentifully watered.
  • Sprouted tubers are carefully removed from the boxes and carefully placed in the hole, trying to observe the even position of the root collar. The soil is filled up, gently pressing around the rhizome, but not falling asleep root neck. The distance from the root collar to the plane of the soil should be from 2-3 cm to 5-6 cm. Dahlias are always planted with a slight deepening, allowing them to tolerate autumn cooling and stabilizing temperature drops.
  • After planting, the plants are tied up to a support and watering is abundant For convenience and effective distribution of moisture around the landing pit create a watering hole (side).

For planted dahlias, it is important to maintain a stable, light soil moisture. Plants need to be watered regularly, compensating for periods of drought. As soil compaction gently loosen it. From the first weeks after planting, it is worthwhile to immediately monitor the development of weeds and prevent their growth.

Feed starts to be carried out after the plants begin to actively develop - not earlier than a week after planting. Breaking out the extra shoots, pasynkovanie, control over the number of stems will allow to obtain more abundant flowering. Tie up dahlias as they grow, free loop of soft materials.
