In the country

It is difficult to imagine the Black Sea or Crimean landscapes without a handsome handsome cypress. If on vacation you are fascinated by this beautiful tree covered with myths and legends, try to grow a cypress in a pot. Caring for him will require some knowledge and skills, but for this, the miniature southern herringbone will please year round with its soft fragrant needles.

Plant description

Cypress belongs to the genus of evergreen trees and shrubs of the same name family. Forms a pyramidal or sprawling crown. Young plants have small, needle-shaped leaves. In adult specimens, they are scale-like, pressed to the branches. Cypress belongs to monoecious plants: under one crown are male and female cones, ripening in the second year. On the underside of the scales, the cones hide the seeds.

Cypresses - inhabitants of a subtropical and tropical climate. Frost-resistant species are grown in gardens and parks, and large-fruited cypress is popular for cultivation in the home in a pot.

In Christian culture, cypress appears as a symbol of eternal life and is referred to in the Bible as a tree growing in the gardens of paradise.

In order to arrange a piece of the Garden of Eden on its windowsill, the cypress tree needs to create conditions close to its natural habitat.

Care for indoor cypress

This southern heat-loving culture needs good lighting. But only mature trees can withstand the bright sun, and young shoots at noon, preferably pritenyat. The best location for it is the eastern or northern windowsills.

Caring for a cypress pot at home consists of regular watering, pruning, spraying and ensuring a period of winter dormancy.

In the summer of the southern handsome hold at a temperature not lower than 20 ° C and abundance of fresh air. To this end, a cypress pot is carried out on the balcony, in the courtyard, the summer terrace. In hot days, the plant needs regular spraying, it is very fond of the shower, or at least the location next to wet moss or wet pebbles.

In early spring, the cypress is pruned to form the desired crown. Until the fall, it is watered abundantly, following the rule - the warmer the room, the more frequent the watering.

From May to August, cypress is fed every month with liquid mineral fertilizer intended for indoor plants.

Very similar to the cypress so-called cypress. They belong to the same genus, and the cypress in the pot should be cared for in the same way as the cypress itself.

How to care for cypress in a pot in winter

For intensive growth during the growing season cypress needs a winter rest. At this time it is kept in a cool room at a temperature of 8–10 ° C. It is watered very moderately, once every 7–10 days. The best place for wintering cypress would be a warmed balcony or loggia. To prevent the roots from freezing, the pot is wrapped with any insulation - foam, mineral wool, rags.

With the onset of spring, the cypress is cut and after two weeks they are brought into a warm room. Watering gradually increase and begin to fertilize.

Cypress Transplant

Young, fast-growing cypress trees are transplanted annually, from April to May. Adult specimens do not need annual transplantation; with them, this procedure is carried out as needed when the cypress becomes crowded in the old pot.

The cypress is transplanted at home in a pot with extreme caution, as it does not tolerate even the violation of the integrity of the earthy coma. In fact, the plant is transferred to a larger container, gently brushing the ground along the edges of the earthen coma.

At the bottom of the pot pour drainage depth of several centimeters, a little sand and soil mixture consisting of:

  • 1 part sand
  • 1 part peat,
  • 1 part turf land,
  • 2 parts of leafy or ordinary vegetable soil.

A new soil under the earth ball is poured in such a way that the root collar of the transplanted plant remains above the soil surface.

A cypress tree is placed in a new pot, trying not to sprinkle earth on it, and gently fill the space between the roots and the walls of the pot with soil. The soil is slightly compacted and watered.

Diseases and pests

Cypress diseases are usually associated with inadequate care. So, from overwetting his roots rot. In the event of the appearance of the root rot, the diseased specimen is transplanted into a new ground, removing rotten roots and reducing the frequency of watering.

Due to the dryness of the air in the room, the cypress can suffer from the invasion of scutes or spider mites. The disease is easily treated with "Fitoverm" or "Aktellik." To prevent the appearance of pests, it is necessary to maintain optimum humidity in the room.

If you follow these simple rules for care, a cypress in a pot can grow into a slender and elegant tree, which will become a real highlight of the interior.

Cypress is a plant that not only decorates the interior, but also creates a healing atmosphere, saturates the air with phytoncides. But to get a healthy plant or to multiply it, you will have to work hard: cypress trees are capricious and demanding.

Cypress according to church traditions is a tree in the Garden of Eden, which became in Christianity a symbol of eternal life, from which Noah supposedly built an ark.

In nature, cypress grows in a subtropical and tropical climate north of the equator. Especially the plant is common on the shores of the Mediterranean, Black Sea, is found in Asia, America and even in the African Sahara.

Cypress room

Cypress room from growing on the sea coasts differs in smaller sizes. From similar signs - dark green leaves in the form of an elongated rhombus and cones with a very interesting pattern, giving the plant attractiveness and decorativeness.

Hamaekiparis (cypress)

Often hamaekiparis is confused with cypress due to external similarity, but there is a difference between them. Differences cypress:

  • flatter branches,
  • smaller sizes of fruits - cones, under each scale - only two seeds,
  • higher cold resistance.

How home cypress multiplies

Get home cypress in two ways: by sowing seeds and planting cuttings.

Growing from seed. Before planting, keep the seeds in the fridge for about 3 months - this process is called stratification, or cold treatment. Before sowing (usually in spring) for 12 hours, soak the planting material in the growth regulator - epine, root, but if there are none, simply in warm water. Plant seeds in a soil mixture for conifers. Instead of the mixture, sand or sawdust is sometimes used, but the seedlings are then transplanted into the soil. Keep the boxes warm - about 25 ° C. Grown up to 5-6 cm seedlings spread in separate pots. On average, shoots yield a quarter of seeds, sprouts appear 2-3 weeks later.

Propagation by cuttings (upper or semi-lignified) is carried out in spring, summer. For 24 hours, put cuttings with a “heel” in the root solution - like flowers in a vase, then rinse, sprinkle the cuts with charcoal powder. Plant the cuttings in a special soil mixture, deepening a third of their height. Remove the jar for a few hours for airing 2-3 times a week. The rooting process lasts up to three months.

Planting a plant

Prepare the soil. Do quality drainage. Planting a cypress pot is carried out so that the neck is free from the ground, otherwise the plant will die.

Replant perform in the spring with a frequency of every two years. Use only the method of transshipment, without destroying the earthy clod, because the roots of the cypress are too sensitive.

Growth Conditions

Young plants do not like dry land, so stick to the recommended watering regime. Do not flood the ground, especially if the box is in direct sunlight.

Cypresses do not like the heat emanating from central heating radiators - put the pot away from them. Make sure that there are no drafts in the room, there should be no window slides nearby. The plant does not tolerate excessive noise - do not place the box near the window overlooking the busy highway.

Cypress Diseases

Here are the most common problems faced by florist in the care of cypress and cypress:

  • Root rot. Occurs when systematically overwetting the soil. Remove the plant from the soil, remove the decaying parts of the root, transplant to a new soil, and reduce the number of waterings.
  • Dry leaf. The leaves dry out for several reasons: not enough moist or too cold air, poorly watered soil, dim lighting. In order for the plant to return to normal, adjust the care of the plant.
  • The leaves turn yellow. This is due to insufficient soil recharge. Use the recommended fertilizer and the foliage will turn green again.

The plant is affected by pests - spider mite, shield and lozhnotovikov. To eliminate pests, use insecticide - solution of actellica (2 ml per 1 l of water).

Watering and feeding plants

Water cypress room according to the following scheme: in the warm period of the year - 2 times a week, in the cold - 1 time in 10 days.

At the same time monitor the condition of the soil. If you put a houseplant in the summer outside, you can increase the frequency of watering. Regardless of the time of year, sprays have a beneficial effect. Spend them in the summer morning and evening, using warm soft water.

From May to August, once a month, use fertilizers to feed indoor crops, but the concentration should be half as much as the manufacturer recommends.

Temperature and lighting

Cypress needs bright but diffused light and shading from the direct rays of the sun, especially in summer. Do not expose the pot to the open window sill in the summer, except for the north side; in the winter, move the tree closer to the light. If you do not provide sufficient illumination, the cypress will lose its shape.

To make the tree grow beautiful and healthy, create the effect of seasonality: the optimum temperature in summer is + 20 ... + 30 ° C, in winter - + 5 ... + 15 ° С. Although the tree successfully tolerates low temperatures in the open field, do not put the pot on the street in winter: in a pot the roots will quickly freeze and die.

Soil requirements

The ideal is a mixture of soil and coniferous humus. If you could not get the components, then prepare such a soil substrate:

  • sand - 1 part,
  • peat - 1 part,
  • leaf ground - 2 parts,
  • turf ground - 1 part.

A special soil for conifers is suitable - loose and slightly acid (pH 5.5–6.5).

Growing a cypress itself is difficult, but quite possible. By the way, the owners of this conifer do not buy a Christmas tree - the tree looks great in the New Year's toys.

And how did this plant appear in your home? Maybe you yourself grew it from seed or cuttings? Tell us what problems you encountered in this process, and did you manage to solve them?

Cypress (cypress): planting and care of indoor plants, growing at home, photo - print version

Cypress family. Homeland Mediterranean, America.

Commercially available Cypress Large-fruited Cupressus macrocarpa - differs in the small sizes and it is removed specially as room culture. Cypress is a coniferous crop, it is an evergreen tree with a pyramidal crown. The leaves are small, needle-shaped or scaly, sessile, tight to the stalks. Cypress fabrics contain a large amount of essential oils, so the plant is very useful for the home.

The methods of its cultivation and care are the same as for Araucaria. In stores, especially on New Year's Eve, you can find cypresses of a wide variety of forms - trimmed in the form of a pyramid, bush, small tree. Cypress really resembles a miniature live Christmas tree and can be a wonderful New Year's gift. It is true there are cypresses, which in the store are treated with special sparkles, so that they look more like a Christmas tree. In fact, it harms the plant, so it is better to purchase a cypress in its natural form, without glitter and toys.

If you want to decorate a cypress under the Christmas tree, then you can hang on it a colorful rain or paper toys that are almost weightless and do not harm the plant. In general, cypress unpretentious plant, the difficulty lies in the fact that it does not tolerate dry air.

Care for cypress at home

Temperature: moderate in summer - cypress does not tolerate heat, in winter it is cool - at least + 5 ° С, wintering is optimal at 8-10 ° С. From the end of May to the end of August it is better to keep the cypress in the open air, in shading and with protection from drafts. Hot air from radiators is destructive to cypress.

Lighting: Cypress needs bright diffused light, shading from direct sunlight, especially in summer. In winter, cypress needs a bright room. If in summer the cypress content on the open (unshadowed) window sill (except for windows with a northern orientation) is unacceptable because of the heat, then in winter it is necessary to move the cypress as close as possible to the light even to the south window, but only to the hot early spring sun. With a lack of light, the cypress is drawn out and loses its shape; on the contrary, when there is an excess of light, the leaves turn yellow and fall off.

  • Watering: plentiful from spring to autumn - but only on well-drained soil! Cypress does not tolerate excess water and does not tolerate drying out of the ground. More precisely, peresushka earthy coma, just destructive for the conifer. Watering in winter depends on the temperature in the room, for example, if the content is with a temperature of + 8 ° C, watering will be about once every 14-20 days, and at a temperature of 12-14 ° C once about 7-10 days (all purely it would be more correct to check the soil by touch or to estimate by the weight of the pot).

Top dressing with fertilizers: from May to August, one month after transplantation, cypress is fed with complex fertilizer for conifers (for example, Bona Forte for conifers) at the recommended dose or for decorative and deciduous houseplants, but at half, from the recommended dose. Feeding is carried out once a month.

Air humidity: spring and summer regular spraying.

Cypress stalk

  1. Find a twig of last year’s growth on a cypress tree — a two-year-old, still green, but already beginning to become an arboreal shoot. Cut about 10-12 cm from the top of the head. From the bottom of it, remove the needles, leaving about 4 cm of a smooth petiole.
  2. Prepare approximately a cup (125 g) of a mixture of peat land and sand in equal parts (sand can be replaced with vermiculite). Disinfect it for 2 minutes in the microwave, cool and slightly moisten with boiled water.
  3. Pour the soil into a transparent zip-package (with plastic zipper). Take a package wide, and at the bottom glue tape with two corners so that you get a cone. Put a cutting in it, spray it with a spray bottle (only boiled water), and close it tightly.
  4. Hang the bag in a very bright place, where the direct sun hits only in the morning or in the evening. Do not open the bag, you do not need to air and water it - the humidity will be 95-97%. Roots should wait 2-3 months. When they grow about 5-7 cm - you can put a sprig in a pot with a diameter of 8 cm.

Cypress is an evergreen tree, less shrub. The height is about 25 m. Cypress is a tree that grows rather slowly. At the age of 80-100 years of age reaches medium size. Crohn sprawling or pyramid, rarely when all branches are in the same horizontal plane. Branched branches many times. Scaly needles, evergreen, cross-steam bath. Cypress cones are rounded woody, with numerous thyroid scales. Cypress seeds are numerous, flat. Maturity reaches the second year.

In the modern classification, there are from 12 to 25 species of cypress, in gardening is used less than 10 species.

Arizona Cypress

Under natural conditions it grows in the mountains in the south of North America. Arizona to 1500 m above sea level, in clean places. In Germany, the Arizona cypress is winter-hardy enough.

Tree height of about 15 m and more. The branches, horizontally spaced from each other, are wide-point Crown. The bark of the Arizona cypress is red-brown, peeling off in long stripes. The branches are thick, identical, stick out in all directions, tetrahedral. The leaves are bluish-green, keeled, thick, sharp, with distinct holes. Cones rounded, about 3 cm thick, red-brown, blue in maturity.

It grows quickly, light-requiring, drought-resistant.

Mexican or Lusitanian cypress

The tree is about 30 m tall, with a wide pyramidal crown. The bark of the trunk is red-brown, the shoots are elongated, tetrahedral, located in different planes. The cypress of the Mexican pine needles ovoid, with pointed, distant ends, tightly pressed. Cones are almost spherical, about 1.5 cm, numerous, young bluish-green, and ripe - brown. Fast growing, poorly tolerant to dry air and soil, sensitive to cold. It develops well on deep, well-drained, red-earth soils. Durable.

Evergreen cypress

The tree is about 30 m tall, with a narrow cone-shaped crown and short ascending branches, tightly pressed against the trunk. Scaly needles, small, elongated-rhombic, located crosswise and pressed tightly to the shoots. Evergreen cypress cones are grayish-brown, rounded, about 3 cm in diameter, hanging from short sprigs. Seeds with a narrow wing, red-brown. It grows quickly, especially in his youth, by the age of 100 reaches its maximum height.

Shade-tolerant Perfectly tolerates prolonged drought and short temperature drops to 20 degrees. It is of low soil requirement, tolerates calcareous and stony, dry, but prefers fresh and deep. On too wet soils short-lived. It tolerates a haircut. Fruiting begins with 5-6 years. Durable.

Evergreen cypress and its pyramidal form possess extraordinary decorative qualities that determine its use in park art for a long time. Architecturally strict, the shape of the tree, its rare and intense dark green colors create an accent of great power in the silhouette of the park landscape. As a rule, evergreen cypress is used in small groups, rarely in the alley and single plantings.

Hamaekiparis - home care

A few decades ago there was no talk of growing a coniferous tree in an apartment, and today it is available to everyone. Dwarf and ornamental conifers are quite suitable for this purpose. Quietly, thuja, some varieties of cedar, cryptomeria, and cypress are grown quite successfully at home. There is in this list a plant hamaekiparisovik (indoor cypress, cypress, hamaekiparis). This plant not only decorates the house, but also benefits the health of its inhabitants, emitting beneficial substances into the air that kill bacteria and germs. In addition, indoor hamaekiparis fill the house with subtle forest aromas.

The description of the hamaekiparisovik should start with the fact that he is a representative of monoecious coniferous evergreen trees belonging to the Cypress family. And the appearance of this handsome man resembles a real cypress: conical shape, the presence of cones, pine needles. In nature, wild cypress grows up to 70 meters, and at home, its height does not exceed two or three meters. Most often grown ornamental species of this plant: Blunt, Lawson, Nutkansky, Gorokhoplodny, Large-fruited. All these species have differences in appearance, but they are united by the shape of the crown, the erect stem, the cones with downward and slightly bulged scales. The exception is the weeping kind of cypress Kashmir, whose branches hang down.

In order to provide hamaekiparis with proper care at home, it is necessary to know its biological features. So, an ornamental tree loves light, but the shadow makes quite well. But drafts for him are extremely undesirable. The most favorable place for placing a pot is a north or east window. However, shading the indoor cypress on these windows in the summer is still needed. To “dilute” the greens, create a small floral group composition, including brightly flowering plants.

Caring for a hamaekiparisovik at home includes regular non-abundant watering. In this case, the substrate in the pot must be fertile and very well drained. If the room is high humidity, then 2-3 moderate watering per month will be enough. Make sure that the earth ball never dries out! Spraying will not be superfluous, and in winter hamaekiparis can be kept in a pan with water.

And now about how to care for a hamaekiparis in winter. First, the plant needs a cool winter. The optimum temperature is not higher than 10 and not lower than 7-8 degrees Celsius.

Proper care for cypress room at home

Of course, in the apartment such a temperature is unacceptable, but a warmed balcony or loggia is a great option. But watering should be significantly reduced. You can even replace it with a pallet filled with water and pebbles.

Propagated hamaekiparis and cuttings and seeds. To propagate this tree with a cutting, in the spring it is necessary to separate it from maternal plant stiffened stalk. As for seed germination, this process is very time consuming, lengthy and not always justified.

And finally. How to care for hamaekiparis, so that the indoor plant does not become a real tree? First, do not use a variety of top dressing for conifers without the need for not to provoke active growth. Secondly, in the autumn period, you can trim a hamaka caparis, thereby adjusting its height.

Having provided the room hamaekiparisovikom optimal conditions for growth and proper care, you will get a beautiful plant that will provide the house with clean and fresh air.

Caring for indoor plants in winter

In winter, when there is frost outside the window, and at home the batteries are working at full capacity and the air is dried, indoor plants have a hard time. And in order for them to continue to grow and delight in flowering, it is necessary to care for them in a special way.

Diseases of orchids and their treatment

Unfortunately, orchids, so beloved by flower growers, are often exposed to various diseases and pest invasions. In our article we will talk about the main diseases of orchids and how to treat them.

How to grow cypress at home

In order for the cypress to grow in your home in a pot and at the same time feel good, you need to grow it from the stone. It grows quickly and in 2 - 3 months it will look big enough to keep it on the window sill as a room flower.

First you need to choose a father for your future offspring. Note that in the Crimea there are several types of cypress. The most common are vertical cypress and horizontal cypress. (The latter of course also grows from the bottom up, just the name is). The vertical cypress is long and thin, and the horizontal in outline is more like a fir tree. Horizontal cypress is less critical to climate and therefore can be found even in Simferopol. Vertical grows only near the coast. True, I know in Simferopol a single vertical cypress tree, but his mistress cares for him very carefully. We sometimes exchange experiences.

But since we grow trees in the room, the climate issue is no longer relevant. So, choose the father that you liked the most. Now choose a bump. On different trees cones ripen at different times. You need to choose a cone, which has already begun to open, but inside it is green and it smells like needles. Buck break open with a screwdriver or teeth. Inside there are about three dozen brown seeds. We sow the seeds in any dish with the ground. It is more convenient, of course, to use a wide low drawer. We water regularly to keep the land moist.

In 2 - 3 weeks sprouts will be born. About a quarter of all sown seeds germinate. Now we put the box in a bright place. You can water less. Let the earth sometimes dries from above.

Note that little cypress trees are afraid of noise. So do not keep them at the open window overlooking Lenin Ave. About a month after germination, sprouts can be transplanted to a permanent place. Choose the ones that are bigger. By this time, the height of the plants is somewhere a little more than a match, but already a woody stem and a dozen leaves. Yes! Small cypress trees do not have needles, but narrow leaves. They tolerate transplants easily, you can say they do not feel it. For transplantation, use a small dish, such as condensed milk cans. Water sparingly so that the earth dries from above. In winter, they are best kept in a cool place and watered very little. A year later, the trees have a height of about 20 cm. Now they need to be transplanted into large containers, three liters each. I used for this purpose tin cans from under tomato paste. Do not take only cans of paint or other chemicals. After another 2 years, when they become more than a meter in height, transfer them to buckets. What to do when they grow out of buckets, I have not yet invented. Now I have 3 cypresses in buckets living at work.

Cypress Care Tips

In principle, you can grow at home any cypress. Moreover, it is much more interesting to grow a tree from the seeds of plucked cones from a tree growing near the blessed Crimean shores. Following the above published advice of Yuri Szymanowski, the author of the site managed to get the pyramidal cypress seedlings, the seeds of which were planted in spring 2004, and the fruits from which the seeds were taken were collected in the village of Partenit in early July 2003. Attempts to grow viable shoots in the fall were unsuccessful. (Seeds were sown in a wooden box in 3 rows.) Although germination was not bad (even in autumn), the newborn lacked light and vitality, and they died ... But spring crops, rejoicing in the coming summer, though not all overcame the critical milestone, but in the end we were pleased with 13 completely viable cypress. During the summer, a few more pieces died, and now only 8 small trees grow: the smallest is about 7 cm, the largest is about 13-14 cm. Their thin legs have already started to grow, and although they are still thick than a match, but by touch hard enough. Interestingly, cypress leaves are still more like leaflets than needles, but as they grow, they become more and more like their parents.

Next spring, the experiment will be repeated with the same seeds (it will be curious to check whether seeds will remain viable in almost 2 years?), Since in June in 2004, it was not possible to pick suitable fruits - due to the long, late spring and cool summer cypress cones have not yet had time to ripen.

It should be noted that, although they recommend (see below) in the summer, keep cypress trees in bright diffused light (but not under direct rays), but among our cypress trees, those that stood in the spring, summer and autumn in the light on the glass were the most powerful and high balcony on the south side. Unfortunately, with the arrival of winter, the cypresses had to be removed into the room (although it was a bit dark there), since it was rather cold on the balcony in winter.

Cypresses (especially very small) do not like if they are not watered enough. Without proper watering (that is, the ground should always be not wet, but wet), they are naturally bent. However, if this happens, water the shoots plentifully enough and they will recover (water when the sun does not shine on the cypresses). However, you can not flood the trees!

Nuance immediately after purchase

In flower shops, cypresses grow in transshipment pots, inside of which there is peat. Most often the plant is very closely in such capacity, and its root system is straight and asks out. Therefore, the evergreen tree needs a quick transplant. After the purchase, you need to wait 6-7 days, and transplant the cypress into a new, convenient pot. The above time is required for acclimatization.

Buying a cypress be careful. Plants such as Kochia and Taksodium are very similar to what you need. Kochia is not evergreen, but Taxiodium, although a cypress family, is deciduous.

Some growers are inclined to believe that cutting room cypress is undesirable because its crown does not increase large volumes. But most, still pruning is recommended. Cypress, depending on the variety, can be given the following forms:

Pruning is carried out in the spring when the plant is completely dry. Spray before the procedure can not be. Extra shoots are removed entirely (trimming them in half is prohibited).

If necessary, pruning can be done in the fall.

Cypress is very fond of light, but does not accept the direct rays of the sun. Ideal - year-round diffused lighting.

If your plant is on the windowsill on the west or east side, at certain times it will need pritenyat. Accordingly, in the summer the cypress is not placed on the south window, in this part of the house it will be good only in the winter.

Lack or excessive amount of light is harmful to cypress, as a negative impact on the development and growth of the plant. In the first case, the branches will strongly stretch upwards and crumble, in the second case they will turn yellow.

When growing cypress at home, it is very important to observe the seasonality. Consider the fact that the natural conditions of the plant are subtropical.

The optimum temperature for cypress in summer is 20-30 degrees Celsius. But in the winter you need to create conditions about 5-10 degrees Celsius. When freezing, the root system of the plant is completely frozen.

How to plant?

Planting and care at home - the procedure is simple. If you have already bought an adult tree, you only need to transplant it after acclimatization. The pot should be 3-4 times the root system of the plant. It is best to choose the capacity of clay. In plastic pots, the soil dries quickly and cools down in winter, which will adversely affect your pet.

You can also buy seeds in a flower shop, or remove brown seedlings from cones. The landing pattern is as follows:

  1. Seeds are planted in wide bowls.
  2. After 14-20 days, the first shoots appear.
  3. After 30 days, tiny cypresses can be planted in a permanent place in the pots.

How to transplant?

Young specimens need frequent transplantation. The procedure is performed annually at the end of spring, but as the frequency increases, the frequency decreases. Adult cypress trees are transplanted only if necessary.

Subtleties of replanting:

  1. Capacity is selected on several sizes more than the previous one.
  2. A drainage layer must be put on the bottom (claydite, shards, sphagnum moss or embers can be used). Layer is a couple of centimeters.
  3. Pour a small layer of soil.
  4. Repot the plant.
  5. Add on top the right amount of land so that it does not touch the neck of the root.

Growing at home

Growing a cypress tree involves following several mandatory rules:

  1. The plant every 2 weeks is expanded by 10-15 degrees.
  2. Green handsome does not tolerate drafts, changes in lighting.
  3. Dry twigs must be removed. They are cut off completely, as hemp will not be overgrown with greens, and spoil the appearance.
  4. When grown in bonsai style, transplanting is needed every 3-4 years.

Soil for the plant

Soil for cypress can be bought in the store, suitable substrate for conifers. The optimal mixture for full growth:

  • Leafy ground - two parts.
  • Sodland - three parts.
  • River sand (coarse) - one part.

The soil must be loosened, otherwise the plant will die. The drainage layer is necessary to prevent stagnant water at the roots.

If you decide to feed the "pet", buy fertilizer in a flower shop, designed specifically for this plant. Gardening fertilizers can not be used.

How to breed?

Cypress can be propagated in two ways: seed and grafting.

  1. After buying the seeds, they need to be stratified (cold treated). For this, the seed is placed in the refrigerator for 3 months.
  2. Before planting, seeds are soaked in warm water for 24 hours.
  3. Landing is carried out in boxes, where drainage is crushed bark, and the main soil is sawdust mixed with sand. Tanks put in a dark place, the soil is constantly moistened.
  4. Seeds germinate partially. Those who successfully made their way, when reaching 5-6 centimeters, are sent to separate pots.

Read more about the nuances of growing cypress from seeds here.

  1. When pruning a tree, cuttings are cut with the presence of a “heel”.
  2. Leaves are removed from the petioles. Put them together in a solution of "root" for 24 hours.
  3. Environments sprinkled with crushed coal.
  4. Petioles are planted in the same soil as in seed reproduction. The third part should go deeper.
  5. Moisturize the soil.
  6. Cover the material with glass jars. Airing is carried out every week for about an hour.
  7. In a couple of months rooting will occur.

Watering and humidity

In summer, cypress consumes a lot of liquid and needs frequent watering. Watering cypress in the summer is recommended daily.

In this case, the main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise the root system will begin to rot. In hot weather, the plant needs spraying (only with settled water at room temperature).

In winter, watering is reduced. Water is also used separated.

Cold season: how to hide it for the winter?

A great place for wintering cypress at home - a loggia or balcony, as it is not worth sheltering for the winter. In this room, the optimum temperature is observed - 8-10 degrees Celsius.

Watering in the winter is carried out once a week. Do not allow the soil to dry out, as well as an excessive amount of moisture.

If the plant is in a warm room, you will need daily hydration. In the morning and evening, cypress need to be sprayed.

Useful qualities

First of all, the cypress will perfectly fit into the interior before the New Year.

Medicinal properties

Pros growing cypress in room conditions:

  • You provide your family with excellent prevention of bronchitis and colds.
  • The plant is recommended to grow those people who have an asthmatic cough.
  • Cypress will benefit those who want to quit the addiction - smoking.
  • The subtle aroma of the essential oil soothes the nervous system.

In summary, we can say that no harm cypress brings. Caring for cypress at home is not very easy, but worth it. As a result, you will receive not only a beautiful plant, but also undoubted benefits for your health.

Advantages of the Home Cord

Cypress - an evergreen plant native to the Mediterranean, as well as the tropics and subtropics of North America. The group includes both spreading shrubs and trees with a pyramidal crown. Like cypresses growing in the wild, room representatives have soft shoots covered with scaly needles. The color of the young needles is light green, in adult specimens it is dark green, slightly bluish.

Some cypress species started growing in a pot in California, from which the tradition spread throughout the world. The plant quickly gained popularity due to its decorative properties. In home apartments it grows slowly, although in nature trees reach 25 m and shrubs 2 m in height. In the premises of the ephedra rarely exceed 1-2 m.

Another feature of the plant is a pleasant aroma. If you hold on his scales, you can feel a light lemon notes. Cypress produces volatile production that disinfects the air, including eliminating the room from moths. Essential oils are found in all parts of the plant.

Popular varieties for growing houses:

  1. Arizona - view with gray-green pointed leaves and bark prone to flaking. Light resistant, drought resistant.
  2. Kashmir is one of the most common dwarf species. Needs maintenance of soil moisture and air. A young tree leaves grow in the form of needles.

Both in the photo and in life, cypress trees look very decorative, neat and attractive. It is possible to assign an honorable place in the interior of this room to these animals.

Cypress care: what you need to know?

Successful cultivation of cypress is possible only when maintaining optimal temperatures, light levels, balanced watering and spraying. Compliance with the rules of care is necessary, otherwise the decoration is not achieved. The most successful will be growing a bush in conditions consistent with its natural habitat.

  1. A conifer guest who grew up in tropical and subtropical corners of our planet needs a bright but diffused light. It is recommended to arrange shading at midday hours. Adult specimens are more resistant to the sun, and to young seedlings excess light can be damaged. The best place to place is the north or east window. If the ephedra is not enough light, it will begin to stretch and lose leaves. In winter, you may need an additional light source.
  2. The optimum temperature for summer maintenance should be within + 20-26 ° C. It is recommended to take the tree to fresh air, in a musty room it will wither. If you can not put the pot on the balcony or loggia, then you need to ensure good air circulation in the room. In winter, the temperature is kept at + 12 ° C.

Seasonality is one of the important conditions of plant maintenance: in the summer it should be warm, in the winter it should be cool. For this reason, a pot with a tree should not be placed on window sills near radiators. It is better to move it to the insulated loggia, and to protect it from freezing, wrap it with a cloth.

  • How to grow a cypress at home, so that its needles do not dry out?

Lack of moisture is bad for the state of the crown. The amount of water introduced should not be excessive, its excess will lead to decay of the root system. In the summer, the ground should be moderately wet, in the winter - drier. The rule is: the higher the air temperature, the more frequent the watering. The average frequency of watering at a temperature of + 15 ° C - every 5-7 days. Water should be at room temperature and of good quality. On hot days, needles can be sprayed with water from a spray bottle up to three times per day, and also put a tray with wet pebbles next to it.

Caring for a prickly guest must be planned. During the growing season from March to August you need to take care of fertilizer. Once a month, feed liquid coniferous mineral composition. This may be complex fertilizer Florovit, Pokon, ASB Greenworld, eliminating the yellowing of the crown, Fertika Lux and others.

If necessary, feeding continues in the winter, but with a frequency of 1.5 months.

The Ephedra responds well to fertilizers with magnesium, and excess nitrogen can harm it. To the needles are not yellowed, you should not often fertilize with humus.

  • We organize pruning

Periodic seasonal pruning is necessary for any domestic fodder. To give the desired shape, the bush is adjusted in the spring. Cypress grows moderately, it can be cut once in 1.5 months. Old shoots pruned, young shortened a little. Trimming not only puts the recruit in order, but also stimulates his growth. To preserve the density of the crown at the end of the growing season, you can cut off part of the growth. In the process of trimming cypress allocates even more volatile in space.

How to perform a transplant?

Young seedlings can be transplanted annually, adults are moved to a new pot less often (as needed). The procedure is carried out in the spring. Capacity for cultivation is taken 3-4 cm wider than the root system. Clay is a suitable material for a pot, in such a container the soil will retain moisture longer, and in winter it will be warm. In plastic containers, on the contrary, the soil dries quickly and freezes through.

The soil should be loose. For planting, you can buy soil for conifers or make it yourself. Suitable composition:

  • turf ground - part 1,
  • leaf (or peat) ground - 2 parts,
  • sand - 1 part.

The root system is poorly adapted to transplant, so the seedling is transferred to a new pot by the method of transshipment. This means that the ground does not change completely. The tree is being broken in and pulled out along with a clod of earth on the roots.

  1. First, a drainage layer of 1 cm is placed at the bottom of the pot. Expanded clay, crushed foam or broken brick will be suitable as drainage.
  2. Then sprinkle a little fresh earth, on the mound placed the epheds with the remnants of the soil from the previous pot.
  3. The remaining space is covered with fresh soil. The root neck should be just above the soil level.

How to propagate a plant: use cuttings and seeds

There are two ways of reproduction: seeds and cuttings. Both methods are in demand among gardeners. You can successfully grow a cypress from seed at home, guided by the following agrotechnical rules:

  1. The cypress fruit is an ovoid lump covered in scales. Seeds are extracted from it and sent to stratification, i.e. cold treatment. They are placed in the refrigerator for 90-120 days.
  2. Before planting, seeds are soaked for 12 hours in a biostimulant solution (Kornevin). It will accelerate the process of germination of seedlings.
  3. Seed is planted in a box with a drainage layer and a slightly moist soil.
  4. The box is placed in a warm place until germination.
  5. Seedlings, grown from the ground by about 6 cm, transplanted into separate pots.

If the seed method of obtaining new seedlings seems to be laborious, you can use cuttings:

  1. The best time for grafting is April, but you can cut shoots in summer and autumn. Harvest growers experienced growers combined with the procedure of trimming.
  2. The apical and semi-woody cuttings are taken. They need to be cleaned from the lower leaves and immersed in a solution of the biostimulator (Kornevin) for a day.
  3. Before planting, the cut is covered with crushed coal so that it does not rot.
  4. The cutting penetrates the ground by a third.
  5. It remains to moisten the soil and build a greenhouse: for this, the seedling is covered with a three-liter jar. It is removed every 2 weeks for 1-2 hours for airing and condensate removal.
  6. Rooting takes 2 months.

Cypress tree favorably responds to indoor cultivation, caring for it will surely pay off with a high decorativeness of the plant and a favorable atmosphere, saturated with a light coniferous smell.

Care for cypress room

Such a plant needs good lighting. Direct sunlight is undesirable for him. Many can be alerted by such advice, because the plant in nature grows under the rays of the scorching sun, but it is only adults that have a good and strong root and needles are much rougher than the young plant to withstand the heat. Younger grow under the shade of adults. Planting of seedlings produced in the warm season, when the sun bakes, should be planted in dry soil. Indoor plant needs diffused light.

For cypress seasonality plays an important role. He needs a warm summer, cool winter. In summer, the plant needs a temperature of twenty to thirty degrees above zero, and in winter from five to eight degrees below zero. With strong frosts only mature trees can cope well, and all this thanks to good and strong roots. A cypress at home growing in a pot, and its roots can simply freeze after a few hours in the cold. So if you are the owner of indoor cypress in a pot, then the temperature in winter is better to maintain above zero.

Important for this conifer is the humidity of the air. This tree is from the Mediterranean coast, it often grows alongside:

A young plant with a low humidity can start to dry out, it will greatly affect the external data of the plant, because its beauty lies in its fluffiness. It does not need to be placed next to the battery. If you know that the humidity in the room is insufficient, then you need a pallet with the presence of moss, peat and pebbles. You can also resort to humidifiers, or use a spray and spray the plant with water. It is obligatory to have a shower for a tree, thereby washing away the dust and moisturizing it.

Top dressing and watering of a plant

Water the cypress is necessary as needed. Here the main thing is to control the moisture of the earth, the development of the roots of the tree and the flow of water. Do not allow the ground to dry out. It is necessary to water generously in summer. At the beginning of the winter period, the number of waterings must be reduced, it is also worth ensuring that the soil does not dry out completely. The amount of water depends on the height and thickness of the tree; the higher it is, the more water is needed to water it. We can not allow that there was an excess of moisture, otherwise the plant will start to hurt.

This plant is considered rather fastidious to care. It must be watered with water that has already settled. This will not give yellow needles and it will not fall off. In the summer it is better to put it on the balcony, where there is fresh air, it will feel very good there, because it is a forest dweller. In this case, the main thing is not to forget that he is a resident of the forest, and he just needs fresh air. Once every 30 days, the plant should be turned ten or fifteen degrees around its axis. Such manipulation provides a uniform crown so that everything is smooth and beautiful from all sides.

At home, the cypress is propagated by seed and cuttings. Already ripe seeds are sown in the soil and peat is added. After sowing, the ground must be moistened and placed in a greenhouse. Those seeds that will sprout, you must dive and plant in pots. You can also multiply with the help of stiff cuttings. Such cuttings must be planted in the ground and put in the greenhouse. The cuttings should give roots after a month or two, after which they begin to grow.

In order for the tree to be always lush and beautiful, it must be cut, remove dry branches and long shoots. It is necessary to cut off completely, not partially or half. The plant does not like drafts.

Sometimes there are problems during the cultivation of the tree. If you do not follow all the rules and do not give the plant proper care, then the tree begins to reach upwards, such a maneuver means that there is not enough light for it. If the plant begins to turn yellow, dry and pour needles, then, on the contrary, it must be put in the shade. Cypress can also turn yellow due to insufficient watering or lack of fertilizer. If the tree dries, then check is there a battery nearby, in this case, watering should be done more often, or move the plant to another location. It so happens that the tips of the needles become brown. This is due to dry air and rare watering of the plant.

Cypress diseases

This plant is hardy to pests and diseases. Evergreen cypress can experience discomfort from dry air, dry root system, this happens only if the cypress grows at home. Also, the plant can deliver discomfort temperature regime of different seasons.

Care rules

How to care for cypress? In order for the tree to feel well at home, it needs to create conditions that maximally repeat the conditions of places of natural growth. Although wild cypress trees tend to grow in open sunny places, direct sunlight can do much harm to small domestic trees. Therefore, it is best to identify them in a well-lit place, but without a direct hit by the sun.

For the proper formation of the plant is of great importance temperature. In summer, during the period of intensive growth, the optimum temperature for these plants is 25ºС. In winter, in order for the plant to rest and be compact, it must be held at a temperature not higher than 10ºС with preservation of intense illumination. If the light is not enough, and the temperature is higher, the plant will stretch and lose its attractive shape.

Since cypress trees in natural conditions only grow in places with high humidity, their home cousins need to create and maintain a fairly high humidity of air and soil. Cypress trees do not tolerate drying out. In this case, they turn yellow and fall off the leaves, and in a dense crown ugly bald spots are formed, which later will be very difficult to restore. Therefore, it is necessary to water the plant often, but not excessively. Stagnant water can destroy the plant, so there must be good drainage in the pot with cypress. For watering suitable soft water at room temperature. In winter, instead of watering, some growers are advised to put ice cubes in a cypress pot. This will provide the desired temperature and sufficient soil moisture. However, home cypresses will not suffer negative temperatures. Due to the small amount of soil in the pot, the earth together with the root system will freeze through and the plant will die.

In summer, the tree should be sprayed with warm water every day. This is especially important if the air temperature rises above 25ºС. Gentle young plant can dry out in a dry air for one day. If possible, the cypress can be taken out into the garden, but not in direct sunlight. In the fresh air, the plant will develop more magnificently.

Transplanting and feeding

Young trees should be replanted annually. Adult plants are transplanted at least once every 2 years. Since home plants grow fairly quickly, a fairly spacious pot will suit for transplanting. When transplanting, it is not necessary to break the earthen room, as this can damage the root system. Only those parts of the earth that have disappeared on their own are removed. These conifers love subacid soils. Ready soil for coniferous trees can be purchased at flower shops. For independent compilation of soil, leaf turf, sand, peat and humus are taken in equal proportions. At the bottom of the pot it is necessary to put a thick drainage layer of expanded clay, pieces of brick or small pebbles. Before planting and fertilizing the soil must be properly loosened. When transplanting, the trunk must be buried in the same way as it was in the old pot. Transplanting is a serious stress for cypress, so it is quite possible that after the procedure the plant will weaken somewhat and stop growing. The first month after transplanting cypress is better to put in a shady place, to provide daily watering and spraying the tree.

Fertilizers and mineral dressings are limited, otherwise the tree will grow too fast. Conventional liquid fertilizer for houseplants bred in 2 times before feeding. The procedure these trees need 2 times a month only in the warm season, that is, during a period of intensive growth. Do not use fertilizers with high nitrogen content. Some flower growers believe that for cypress trees, only special liquid dressings for coniferous trees are sufficient.

General care tips

To create an unusual shape or just a neat crown tree every year pruned. Excess branches can not be cut in part or half. They are only removed completely. Also cut and dried twigs.

To reduce the growth rate during transplantation, pruning is performed. If it is desirable to have a very small tree, transplantation can be carried out once every 3-4 years.

If yellow twigs begin to appear on the tree, increase the intensity of watering and spray the crown with water more often.

In order to minimize the likelihood of plant disease and damage to it by various pests, it is necessary to follow the rules for caring for cypress at home, provide temperature and light conditions, and maintain high humidity. Fresh air and in time made mineral and organic supplements will give strength to this elegant evergreen tree.

Although cypress can not be attributed to unpretentious indoor plants, the time and effort spent on its cultivation, are fully justified. Christmas tree is quite possible to decorate the New Year. And the rest of the time this tree will delight you with fresh greens and a pleasant fragrant aroma.

Location, lighting and temperature

If you have brought such a "pet", do not forget that he is still a forest dweller and requires special conditions. is he adores bright light, but without hitting the scorching rays of the sun. In the summer, the needles can get burned. A great place for it is the east or west window. The south side is also acceptable, but at a distance from the windows. She likes fresh air, regularly air the room. From the moment when heat is established at night, it is carried to a balcony, terrace or under a canopy of private territory. The last option provides protection from the sun, drafts and precipitation. Types with needles of yellow color less whims and without problems basking under the direct rays of the Star.

In winter, a pet should be protected and kept away from radiators. Winter, he better transfers on the south window. If there is no possibility of moving, then use additional artificial lighting.

Does not tolerate high temperatures. Favorable conditions for him - 20-25 degrees in the summer and 11-14 in the winter. The most difficult to create the necessary microclimate in the heat, if the room does not have air conditioning and a balcony. This will help the ice. Several cubes are placed on the pallet of the pot. In addition, resorted to the use of a spray. In the heating season transferred away from the batteries.

Humidity and watering

Strongly does not tolerate dry air.. It can cost a cypress life. Experienced owners advise you to purchase a hygrometer and monitor its performance. Optimally, they should not be below 50%. To ensure and maintain such conditions, there are many tools and devices: regular irrigation, a container with expanded clay installed in close proximity to which water is poured as it evaporates, a pot tray, an electric air humidifier.

From April to October, spraying is carried out in the morning and evening. You can use only warm and sedimented fluid.

Prefers regular and abundant wateringso that the earth is constantly hydrated. From spring to autumn, "drinking" every day, on the other days of the year - once a week. Sometimes in frosty times they do without moistening. Replaces the procedure pallet with moisture-retaining sphagnum moss. Water must be filtered, warm and lime free. Stagnation is not allowed. Correct to pour a little, but often. Suspend evaporation by mulching. If you notice a dry ground in the vessel, then regardless of the season, immediately pour a pet. Another way to provide him the desired conditions - a shower. The pot is pre-covered with a film so as not to erode the soil and there is no stagnation of the liquid.

Pot selection

You should not pick up a huge capacity. Correctly determine the size will help measurements of the exotic. The depth should be one third of the height, and the width is two times less than the width. With the subsequent replacement of the vessel, the new one is most of all 2-3 in diameter.

Pick up resistant and heavy vases so that they do not roll over. Be sure to have through drainage holes.

Soil and fertilizers

The most suitable, capable of ensuring full growth and development - light, nutritious, with a neutral or slightly acid reaction. In a specialty store on sale there is a substrate for conifers. Before use, fluff it. You can cook it yourself by mixing the following ingredients:

  • base (3 parts) turf ground,
  • on 1 share sheet soil,
  • sand,
  • peat.

Drainage is required (pebbles, fragments of stone, brick, etc.).

Without additional power can not do. It is made from March to November. Ideal mineral and organic complexesthat alternate. It is more convenient if they are in liquid form. In the market there is always a large selection of fertilizers for ornamental plants or bonsai. Schedule - every 2 weeks. The dose indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer is divided in half. Winter is not required. Before making them, the soil is gently loosened. You can not use growth stimulants. Under their influence, a tree can completely lose the decorativeness of its crown.

Spider mite

The appearance of small white spots and thin cobwebs are true signs of the attack of this uninvited guest. If time does not respond, then the needles will change color, and then begin to dry out and crumble. To get rid of pests will help special tools - fitoverm, temik and folk methods - decoction of onions, garlic or dandelion.

Noticed the uncharacteristic bumps of a yellow, green, or gray color? This is a pest. It feeds on green juice and causes a weakening, and then a more serious consequence - death. First, you can use less harmful folk remedies - an infusion of potassium soap or horseradish.

But, if the expected result is not, then resort to chemical drugs - aktar, aktellik or mospilan.

Transplantation and reproduction cypress

For young representatives, the replacement of the pot is made every spring by the method of transshipment. If it is not an emergency (attack of insects or diseases), then the prerequisite is the preservation of the earthen coma. Beneficial insects live in it - mushrooms symbionts. They are involved in the process of plant assimilation of useful elements from the soil. It is enough for the older generation to “move” once every 2-3 years.

Very adult exotics need transplantation as the container is filled with the root system. They can change the top layer of the earth every year. Bred culture in two ways.

How to choose a healthy plant in the store

It begins with a thorough inspection of the appearance. If the root system is noticeable on the surface, then refuse to buy immediately. Any kinds of needles are very sensitive and cannot stand without the consequences of such omission. An important indicator of health - needles. It should be green, dense and elastic. With a little pressure spread persistent aroma.

Do not buy a copy, if visible spots, streaks, insects and cobwebs, dry or yellowed branches.

Pay attention to the conditions of maintenance and the commensurability of the size of the pot. After purchase, a transplant is not required until the next spring (unless it became small).
