Succulents can be not just plain "fat people" - residents of stony gardens. Some of them are stunning plants with bright, expressive flowers. Set a fairy tree on your windowsill, covered with many small pink flowers - adenium. They call it adenium as the Rose of the Desert or the Star of Sabinia, the Impala Lily.

Little known until recently, adenium won wide popularity among gardeners due to its exotic look and ease of care. Delicate, delightful flowers, covering the crown of a tree, can cause admiration from anyone.

There are about 50 species of Adenium known, in nature there are specimens up to several meters in height! In the indoor floriculture, one species is common - adenium is obese, very similar to bonsai. However, it will not be necessary to mess around with adenium a lot: the tree itself assumes bizarre forms, so attractive to the eye, requiring only a little pruning and nipping.

How to care for adenium at home

Adenium content at home photo

Caring for adenium is as simple as possible, so you will not need to memorize any intricacies. A beginner florist or amateur "with experience", everyone will appreciate the simplicity of the flower. The main features of agricultural technology is easy to remember, we will tell you more about them in the article.

Adenium loves a lot of light, so south windows are the best place to put an exotic succulent. Only at the onset of hot summer, when the sun's rays become especially burning, the plant is transferred to the eastern or western window sills, so as not to burn the trunk and leaves.

Temperature

In the warm summer days, when the air temperature reaches 25-30 ° C, adenium feels great. At the onset of autumn, when the air temperature decreases, and the day is shortened, the plant slowly enters a period of rest. Therefore, with the arrival of winter, it is desirable to maintain this state by determining adenium in a cool room, where there will be about 12-15 ° C heat, but not lower than + 10 ° C.

How to water adenium

Considering that Adenium is a succulent, you should not be zealous with watering. The plant tends to accumulate moisture in its fleshy tissues. Therefore, let's dry up a bit the upper layer of the earth so that adenium feels comfortable. Especially this mode of irrigation like lazy flower growers who remember the existence of green house pets only on weekends.

In summer, when the plant is actively increasing its green mass, watering can be done more often, but little by little, so as not to over-wet the ground. During the rest period, watering is minimized, only occasionally moistening to prevent the land from drying out in a pot.

What to fertilize adenium for better growth

Formation of adenium at home photo

In the flower shop for sale complex fertilizer for succulents. It is advisable to purchase and fertilize the plant in the spring, during the period of active growth. The main elements that the plant needs for growth and development, the laying of flower buds - phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen. The main thing is not to overdo it and follow the recommendations specified by the manufacturer of the drugs.

Remember, “overfed” succulents are able to increase the mass of the trunk, reducing the volume and duration of flowering. Therefore, feed no more than twice a month, and strictly according to the instructions.

Why do leaves of adenium turn yellow?

If the lower leaves turned yellow in autumn or winter, there is no need to be afraid: this is a sign that the succulent entered the dormant period and discards the extra sheets in order to transfer the “hibernation” easier.

If the problem is noticed in spring-summer, when the plant is in the active phase, pay attention to its maintenance conditions. This may be a sign of hypothermia, draft, or insufficient watering.

Adenium Transplant

Young adeniums are actively growing, quickly exhausting the supply of nutrients in the soil, occupy the entire area allotted to them, so that the roots become crowded. Therefore, in spring, from March to May, the succulents are transplanted into a more spacious pot, trying to partially replace the soil carefully.

By the way, do not forget that after transplantation the succulents should not be watered. Wait a couple of days, let the damaged roots dry out and tighten the wounds, then gently, gradually, resume watering.

Pinching, trimming and shaping adenium caudende video

If you want to get a unique branchy crown of a mini-tree, do not be lazy to tackle it and trim. Pruning aims to form the crown and stimulate branching. Pinching pursues the same goals, it is carried out in seedlings obtained from seeds.

How to form the roots of adenium

Consider that the roots of adenium grow strongly, which is why the plant is gradually crowded out above the ground. If the roots have risen more than 1-2 cm above the ground, you need to urgently prune them. To do this, the plant is released from the pot, cut the side roots, and transplanted into a deeper pot.

Adenium seed

Growing adenium seed photo

Seeds can be planted one by one in peat cups or even soaked on gauze until germinated, and then carefully planted in a nutrient mixture.

Adenium seedling photo

Young seedlings are actively growing and respond well to watering and full coverage. Air temperature should not fall below 14 ° С or rise above 30 ° С.

When the plants become crowded in temporary cups, they are carefully transplanted along with a clod of earth to a permanent place, shortening the central root in order to stimulate the development of lateral roots.

Reproduction of adenium cuttings

The fastest and easiest way to propagate adenium is to root the top cuttings 10-15 cm long when pruning a tree.

Before planting, the cuttings in the place of the cut should be sprinkled with crushed charcoal (or activated) and allowed to dry until dry dry skin is formed. After that they are planted in slightly damp soil, but they are not watered. Only two or three days later, it will be possible to occasionally gently moisten the earth with a pulveel and resume watering only by noticing the growth of new shoots.

Air humidity

Adenium unpretentious to the conditions of humidity. But when it is actively growing, spraying its surface will not be superfluous. You should not touch the flowers in order to avoid loss of their decorative qualities.

The soil for growing adenium should be breathable, loose, with an acidity close to neutral. Soil for adenium can be prepared with your own hands by mixing coarse sand with leaf and turf soil in equal parts and with an admixture of charcoal. You can add crushed bricks to the substrate and take more sod land if you plant a sufficiently adult plant. But if there is no time to prepare the mixture yourself, then the ready soil mixture for cacti will do.

Fertilizers and fertilizers

Both mineral and fertilizers for cacti will be suitable for top dressing. Fertilization frequency - 1 time per month.

Adults adenium transplanted when necessary. It is enough to replant young plants once a year. The root system increases as it grows in width and not in length. Given this feature, you should choose a wide, but shallow pot for the plant. In addition, it is advisable to take a pot that is not dark in color so that the soil does not overheat once more in the scorching sun.

Adenium is pruned in the spring when it starts vegetating. Pruning is not necessary, but this procedure is necessary if there is a desire to turn the plant into something concrete: in a tree (one trunk will be obtained) or a bush (several trunks). In the first case, adenium is cut off by no more than one third of the height; in the second case, it should be cut even lower. And this applies to each of its twig. For young plants, one pinching is enough.

Propagation by cuttings

Adenium can be propagated in spring and summer with apical cuttings, vermiculite or sand serve as a substrate. The stalk is cut to a length of 10-15 cm, then it must be treated with charcoal and dried. With normal humidity, the plant will take root in the first month, otherwise its cuttings will rot. It is necessary to maintain the temperature within 25-30 degrees and good lighting.

Reproduction by air layouts

Reproduction by air layouts is one of the easiest and most effective ways for both young and adult plants. It is best to make cuttings in late spring or early summer, when adeniums begin to grow actively after winter dormancy. Young plants can bloom next year.

On a shoot with a thickness of at least 2 cm in diameter with a knife, a circular, shallow incision is made, dried, and then treated with a horse stimulator. The incision is wrapped with sphagnum moss and wrapped with an opaque film (can be wound with thread or wire). Sphagnum periodically moistened. Roots usually appear 3-4 weeks. After the appearance of the roots, the layers are separated and planted in the ground.

This method of reproduction has its drawbacks. The flower will not have pronounced decorative qualities, because the trunk will not be as thick as that of the fat adenium.

Difficulty growing

In autumn, the leaves of adenium turn yellow and fall, which can alert beginner gardeners. But do not worry, because this is a normal phenomenon for him, because at this time the plant enters a state of rest. During the rest of the seasons, the reason for this may be too low a temperature, as a result of which it freezes, or a change in the usual conditions of detention.

Diseases and pests

Adenium is most often affected by a mealybug and a shield. Similarly, all kinds of rot, due to over-irrigation, are dangerous.

Important! And finally, you need to add that adenium belongs to poisonous plants, so it should be kept away from children and not put in children's rooms, and after contact with them, wash hands and tools that worked with this plant thoroughly.

I bought a flower two months ago about 30 cm. From a small pot I transplanted it into a little more three days ago. And today I felt that the base of the trunk had become soft. Wash only during transplantation. Now I'm worried - will the flower disappear or can I save it? Who knows - tell me!

Reply Alexander and Suhl July 3, 2015 at 18:09

Hello, in what land they planted, especially for adeniums, if not, then add sand, so that the roots and trunk are not strongly moistened, rot may appear, it is better to overdry than overwet, I understand, I want to give a flower to drink, it's a pity, but this is not a pity.

Alexander and Zulya July 3, 2015 at 20:31

Thanks, I will try, it is a pity to lose a flower.

Lyudmila July 4, 2015 at 06:11

You can still try to pour water with potassium permanganate to disinfect the soil after the soil is dried. How by the way the leaves did not turn yellow, do not fall? This is the main indicator, if the bright green, you can not panic, everything will be fine. In general, the flower is not whimsical, the less attention you pay to it, the better

Alexander and Zulya July 4, 2015 at 15:18

The leaves are green so far, but today they look a little worn out. I think that let it stand for three days, then I will try water with potassium permanganate, well, and if this does not help, you will have to cut off the top in order to save at least something.

Lyudmila July 4, 2015 at 18:48

Yes, Lyudmila, let the soil dry out, then the fields only with warm water with manganese, the temperature is not lower than 20 degrees, it can be higher, adenium is a heat-loving plant, southern, it does not tolerate temperature reduction, it can rot the trunk from the inside if you re-moisten the soil. That's when the trunk rot (God forbid), then do not throw away the plant, cut off the healthy part of the top and try to root it.

Alexander and Suhl July 4, 2015 at 18:34

Wait to cut the top, you wrote that the trunk was soft! Do not touch the top! Even if all the leaves throw off, then the new ones will grow, give him time, do not hurry, the strong tree will come to life itself, during transplantation it may have damaged the root system, it has all the top, deep pots, nothing, just like big

I bought adenium in a greenhouse 2 weeks ago now for some reason, the leaves began to turn yellow and fall off. Some dry yellow spots appeared. The trunk became soft and began to lean. Tell me please what is the problem? Blooms

oksana October 12, 2015 at 10:15

Sometimes the plant begins to turn yellow and shed its leaves. There may be several reasons for this:
too dry air
too low ambient temperature
draft.

Reply Alexander October 12, 2015 at 10:01

It was warm in the greenhouse, it was cool on your windowsill, the plant is undergoing acclimatization. This is one of the reasons. Perhaps overflowing water, cold. Let him stand, do not water for two weeks, look, reaction

Reply oksana October 13, 2015 at 09:24

thank you Adenium is standing on the street in the afternoon. It is very hot in the evening. A little cooler than a draft. It does not frighten me that the trunk has become soft and sluggish. The earth is dry.

oksana October 13, 2015 at 10:43

Oksana, you write that adenium is on the street in the afternoon, how much temperature do you have on the street? Is it October now or do you live in Africa?

Reply oksana October 13, 2015 at 23:08

in Israel about + 27- + 30 This autumn is very hot

oksana October 14, 2015 at 09:08

Hello, you wrote that your Adenium blooms, and you live in a hot country, try to pour plenty of warm water, let the soil dry out. Maybe the trunk will pick up its turgor (elasticity). If this does not help, the flowers will fall off, the leaves will turn yellow and also fall off, then you need to look at the trunk itself, if it has rotted from the inside. Carefully remove from the pot, look at what condition the roots, rotted, cut to a healthy root, sprinkle with antiseptic. Gently scribble the crust of the trunk with a knife, if it is green inside, then the trunk is healthy, if it is black, then it is rot. It will save only grafting or de top healthy tip to use as a scion, then you will not lose your grade. grafting adenium is easy.

Reply Kristina April 5, 2016 at 07:15

Hello, please tell me how to properly cut and what soil to transplant the flower?
When transplanted, they poured it (((At first, the leaves turned yellow, then the trunk became soft at the base (((It checked to turn black. Please help save the flower.

Cristina April 5, 2016 at 11:34

Hello Christina! If in the middle of the trunk went rot, it is very difficult to save the flower. Whatever soil is transplanted, there will be no effect. You can try to reanimate in this way: get the flower out of the pot, erase the whole earth, remove the rotten roots until you see a living body, if the trunk inside is rotting, then cut it to the living. Then dip the lower part in potassium permanganate and sprinkle with ashes, put in a pot of steamed sand and close with a jar so that the outside flower does not dry and wait ...

Alexander April 5, 2016 at 20:46

Good day. I have long admired adenium, dreamed of such a friend on the windowsill. It was bought by growth, about 3-4 years ago. cm 5 tall and a few leaves. After 1.5 years transplanted. Vymahal almost 40 cm, although trying to pinch, grew up. This year, she made up her mind and cut it to the middle. She cut it with candle wax. The cut part was divided and placed in water, I hope it will give roots, the leaves on the cuttings are alive. On the very adenium, a side shoot escaped, but only one and practically from above, at the point of cut ... I cannot branch it out and I don’t know when it blooms. Стоит на западном окне, южное очень жаркое. Может кто подскажет когда они зацветают и чем простимулировать?

Thank you very much, I read because the leaves began to turn yellow. I am now November. I thought he was dying, but it turned out that way

Adenium species and varieties

The Adenium family represents about five species, and all the others are subspecies.

Adenium Obsessum or another name Adenium fat. The plant develops slowly, its trunk is stiff, a significant branching begins at the top. The height of the plant, about 1.5 meters, and in diameter the trunk passes the mark of more than a meter. Grayish shoots with thick fleshy base. Light green leaves with a longish base reaching a length of about 10 cm grow on top shoots.

In summer, the plant is about 5 cm in diameter with bright pink, red or light petals. Growing this plant at home, its height can reach about 70 cm, it all depends on the conditions of care and the abundance of moisture. In some tribes, his poison was used in the creation of poisonous arrowheads.

Adenium Arabicum natural habitat is the south of the Arabian Peninsula. It is worth noting an interesting fact, if the plant does not have enough water, then adenium remains in the form of a bush with a large root system. And if there is enough water, the plant develops and becomes a tree.

The leaves of this plant are brilliant and larger in size than obsessum, and with age they become long up to 20 cm and width about 11 cm. The trunk reaches up to one meter in diameter. Adenium arabicum grows well at home, quite unpretentious plant.

Flowering begins in the third year after disembarkation. The first inflorescences begin to appear in the second half of winter. The brightest feature of adenium arabicum is its caudex, it is its appearance and extended base.

Adenium mini

This is the brightest representative among other species. It is represented by an actively branching shrub, which since the time of planting is unusual and very actively blossoms. Growth as it passes slowly, as in all species. The peculiarity that the plant has is non-permanent varietal characteristics after selection work, the difference in color and shape.

Adenium many-flowered its birthplace is the coast of Mozambique. This species forms various interesting hybrids with Adenium Obsessum. This plant is a shrub, its individuality is its rhizome, but by the fifth year of growth it disappears. Flowering in this species takes place in cold and dry times, in winter. White inflorescences with red trim. There are also red, burgundy and pink shades with inflorescences up to 7 cm in diameter.

Adenium home care

For adenium care does not take much time and effort, so the plant is quite popular among gardeners.

Adenium is a heat-loving plant that develops well even when exposed to sunlight. Sufficient lighting is a necessity for adenium in care and maintenance, so the south side is what it takes. The plant on the windowsill must be constantly deployed so that it grows evenly and does not "twist the tip."

For adenium at home, it is necessary to maintain the temperature from 24 to 35 degrees, this is necessary during active development from autumn to spring. Moistening does not play a big role, you can sometimes splash in the summer and only the leaves, the flowers do not touch.

In the autumn season, when a sunny day at adenium is reduced, a state of rest begins. In some species, part of the leaves fall, and sometimes all. In winter, adenium can withstand temperatures as low as 10 degrees, but it is important not to flood the plant during this period, otherwise you risk losing the plant due to a fungal infection.

Adenium watering

Watering in the spring and in the summer, when there is an active development, you need to regularly and plenty of moisturize. In winter, watering is reduced and moistened as needed when the ground cover dries out. Water for irrigation needs a soft, room temperature and slightly sour.

Adenium blooms from spring to autumn. Inflorescences are large, bloom in large quantities. Bouquets of flowers are on the ends of the branches.

Adenium transplant

For adenium, a transplant is performed as needed, but in good conditions adenium can develop quite quickly. The first transplant is required at the age of about three months.

The thickness of the shoots usually reaches one centimeter. Adenium transplantation is performed in the evening or overcast weather and does not moisturize for several days. If it turned out that the transplant fell on a light day, then after transplanting the plant must be moistened.

How to transplant adenium

The plant is taken out of the tank, reviewed for the presence of putrefaction. Drainage and a small amount of soil are poured on the bottom of the new tank, and we put a seedling there, cover it with soil and make sure that it replaces the void between the roots. After transplantation, the plant is placed in a dark place for a couple of days. Young plants prefer moderate watering.

Soil for adenium

For adenium, the soil for transplantation is of particular importance. The ideal soil for adenium is light and moisture permeable, with a sufficient amount of fertilizer and a neutral or acidic reaction.

Soil can be purchased ready and add perlite or vermiculite, but so that its quantity does not exceed 20%. You can buy ready-made soil for ground orchids. Also, the soil can be prepared independently. The composition of such soil for adenium should include coconut fiber or peat, hardwood or humus, coarse sand, perlite, and the ratio (5: 2: 1: 2).

Why does not bloom adenium

Due to inadequate maintenance conditions, sometimes adenium stops flowering. The reason may be a large amount of fertilizer, because of this flower well goes to the foliage, and does not bloom. Also, there may be a lack of sunlight, rotting of the root system and abundant watering during the cold season and improper maintenance of a state of rest for adenium.

Therefore, in order to make the plant bloom at home, you must follow these rules of care.

Description and origin

It is very interesting that this flower with a thick trunk can grow in the sun-scorched desert just like in a humid subtropical jungle. It is adapted by nature itself to the most difficult conditions, so that home care for it will be quite simple.

Hot Africa - the birthplace of adeniums. In the wild they are met in Saudi Arabia, in Thailand and India you can see already cultivated species. Of course, they all differ from the usual two-meter tall trees in our growers.

Although the plant is poisonous, all the same, they love to grow it, there are even special clubs for adenium lovers. These plants have conquered the hearts of our gardeners with their bizarre look, as if from a fairytale forest of gnomes, and an unpretentious and appealing character. Yes, you will be forgiven if you forget to pour adenium on time.

We have for decorative cultivation the most common 4 types of adeniums:

Of all of them, you can often find adenium obese on the windowsills, most likely because he is the most unpretentious of the others and has unusually beautiful flowers.

Sometimes the plant looks a little funny, some really resemble thick-bodied, short and plump stems, topped with a crown of leaves and flowers on top. Due to the successful selection, the colors of flowers are very different, white, red, black and even motley. The trunks are also different original colors, giving a special decor to the home interior.

Location, lighting

This plant fairly calmly transfers the direct rays of the sun, but if their impact does not last more than 4 hours, otherwise burns will result on the leaves. When there is insufficient lighting or short-lived plant languishes, the leaves become pale, even begin to fade, and the flowers do not appear at all.

Best of all, Adenium will feel on the south window, and in the summer boldly put it on the balcony, just protect it from drafts. On the closed loggia, you can leave the plant for the whole summer.

Watering and humidity requirements

Irrigation mode should be flexible, that is, depending on the season, air temperature and weather.

In summer, hot days the plant is watered more often, in cloudy and wet weather less often. The cooler, the less moisture is required for adenium.

In winter, you need to ensure the plant complete rest, then completely eliminate watering. Do not worry at all about this, it will transfer this time perfectly normal and natural, some species even drop some of the foliage for the winter.

There are no special requirements for humidity, in the summer heat you can spray a plant with warm water. Watering is also necessary with warm and clean water, preferably rain or well-settled.

To determine whether you need watering or not, just touch the soil in the pot, it must be completely dry. In the case of adenium, it is better not to pour out than to pour. Its fleshy and thick trunk accumulates water and holds it for a long time, thus saving the plant from drought.

Top dressing and fertilizers

Introduce top dressing under the plant begins in April, when growth begins, the plant departs from hibernation and requires nutrition. In the fall feeding, of course, stop. They are made every two weeks.

There are some requirements for feeding adenium, you need to make only in a long-soluble form, the dose is usually 2-3 times less than indicated in the instructions.

In the spring, when the plant begins active growth, we focus on nitrogen fertilizers, which help to increase the green mass, when flowering begins, we choose potash-phosphorus fertilizers, which are necessary for long-term flowering.

Adenium transplantation

Adult plants are transplanted infrequently, after 5 or even 6 years. Young in the first two years there is a need for a transplant every year.

If in doubt whether your exotic pet needs a transplant or not, pay attention to the following:

  • The plant has stopped growing.
  • The roots began to bulge out of the pot.
  • The soil became solid and a saline deposit appeared from above.
  • Adenium refused to bloom.
  • The plant has not been transplanted for a long time.

Sometimes after transplanting the plant loses its shape, so it should be carried out as carefully as possible.

Adenium emits poisonous juice, for any manipulation, pruning, transplanting, transshipment, you need to follow safety precautions and wear rubber gloves.

The best time for transplanting is spring, at the very beginning of active growth. For a successful transplant, we need a suitable soil for the plant and a pot.

The pots must be selected taking into account the peculiarities of the growth of adeniums, the whole point is that in the first years the roots begin to stretch, at this time we pick up rather narrow and high pots. Mature plants begin to "be heard" in breadth, then the pots are already selected wide. For transplanting, choose a pot a few centimeters larger than the previous one.

Soil can be bought in the store, suitable for special succulents. You can use your own cooked, for it requires humus and leaf earth, in equal quantities, the same amount of sand with the addition of charcoal and perlite.

The whole transplant can be divided into several stages:

  • Preparing the pot and soil.
  • We take out the plant from the pot.
  • Release roots from drainage residues and soil, wash and dry.
  • We place the plant in a new pot on a layer of expanded clay and soil.
  • Fall asleep voids around the plant.

After transplantation adenium does not water. The first three days you need to give the roots a little dry, so that they do not start to rot.

Young plants are transplanted a little differently, with a lump of earth, so as not to damage the young while the roots are still.

Reproduction by cuttings

You can spend all the time active growth. Cuttings from the top shoots are cut by 10 cm and planted in a light and moisture-intensive substrate. To roots developed faster, seedlings are kept at a temperature of +25 degrees. With this method of breeding you need to make sure that the soil moisture is not too high.

How to grow from seed at home

In 2009, when “adenium addiction” was just beginning, and it was impossible to purchase them at the flower shop, many were forced to buy seeds of this amazingly beautiful bonsai plant.

These trees attract the attention of a thick stem of various forms, fleshy dark green leaves and beautiful flowering. If you can achieve the appearance of bright colors, it usually happens in summer and early autumn.

Before you buy the seeds of Adenium, you need to determine how the species differ from each other. Obessum is the most common and easy to grow species. Adenium many-flowered - difficult to care for, but corresponds to the name. Boehmianum is the rarest and most capricious, its seeds do not grow well.

Growing Adenium from seeds is not at all difficult. Sow better in early spring. Before planting the seeds, it is desirable to soak in water with the addition of epin, but you can not handle. Usually, germination is quite good, provided that the seeds are fresh, but the old ones cannot be saved either by epin or zircon, they will grow badly.

The plant is not picky about the composition of the soil, but it is better if it is breathable, with a lot of sand, perlite or vermiculite. Demanding on moisture, but do not like the Gulf and the stagnation of water - many of my shoots died for this very reason. On hot days, it is desirable to spray the leaves, otherwise their tips will turn yellow and dry out.

Shoots usually appear quickly, a maximum of two weeks.

Sprouts do not need picking, but they need to be transplanted often, while raising them higher above the ground level in the pot. That is how an amazing flower grows its thick stem.

There is a very interesting way to get very thick bonsai blooming in a variety of colors.

To do this, take 4 seedlings of about the same age and size and cut a strip along each of them, but not much - a little deeper than the bark. Then the seedlings are combined with these cuts, tied with thread or wire and bound, thus planted in one container.

Such a hybrid for quite a long time is depressed and sometimes its constituent parts die, but in case of success, within six months, the young trees fully grow together and form one plant, which, when the age reaches, will bloom from four sides in different colors. I have this experiment, unfortunately, was not crowned with success even once, but still ahead.

Young Adeniums grown from seeds should be protected from drafts, since young plants can die from them, so it is better not to leave them next to open windows.

When caring for these bright and unusual trees, you need to remember that their juice is poisonous, so you need to make sure that children and pets do not get to the flower.

It should also be remembered that when propagating by seeds, varietal characteristics may not be transmitted, none of the bona fide sellers will give such a guarantee.

But this has its advantages - everyone has a small chance to get, in connection with the mutation, a completely new sort of adenium, which then it will be quite possible to patent and name it. When breeding in nurseries for the production of new varieties is used exactly seed multiplication.

Care and cultivation of seeds at home

To grow adenium from seeds at home, you need to know the features and "habits" of this exotic. Some people consider this occupation difficult, practically impossible to accomplish, but not everything is so bad, it’s enough just to take into account that this plant of the succulent genus requires some knowledge in its care and cultivation.

Adenium, a plant with beautiful flowers and an unusual thick stem, has long attracted the attention of flower growers, even whole communities of fans of these extraordinary houseplants are being created.

The unpretentious nature of the adenium also plays a big plus to their exotic appearance. Natives of the tropics and subtropics (the homeland of the Adeniums of Africa), they learned to survive during droughts and extreme temperatures, they do not care for the bright rays of the sun, even the opposite, they feel better in bright light.

It is an absolutely amazing and fascinating process of growing indoor plants with your own hands, and it is twice more interesting to grow such sturdy beetles.

For succulents, this is very important, because excess moisture in a moment will cause the root system to rot.

Soil preparation

The most suitable soil for the germination of adenium seeds must meet three requirements:

Mixed in equal amounts of baking powder and soil from the store for succulents, suitable for cacti, are best suited for preparing the right soil. From baking powder, you can take charcoal, finely crushed, suitable perlite or vermiculite. You can crush and add to the soil a crumb of brick, coarse sand. Well crushed expanded clay.

Seed preparation for cultivation

Among amateurs lovers for many years there are disputes, you need to soak the seeds when planting or not. The thing is that sometimes because of this soaking procedure, germination is lost, the seeds begin to rot in the soil. But most likely this is due to improperly prepared soil and non-compliance with the temperature regime, which will be discussed below.

Soak adenium seeds necessary for two hours in warm water, but do so that all the time the water is cool. You can put them next to the heater.

After soaking it is necessary to hold them in a solution of the fungicide for half an hour. The best will be a weak solution of manganese, phytosporin or zircon. After all these treatments, the seeds are fully prepared for sowing.

Sowing seeds

Our prepared bowls need to be properly filled with soil. First, there is a drainage layer necessarily, for it can be used both small pebbles, and expanded clay, and small pieces of foam.

Pour the soil for sowing flush with the edges, it is not necessary to compact the soil, it should remain loose.

Seeds are not buried in the soil, spread them in pots and sprinkle them on top with a layer of soil or press them in a little.

We do not irrigate crops, we only moisten with warm water from a sprayer. Then we constantly carry out moistening as needed.

After sowing, all of our containers are covered with polyethylene, but the most convenient food film, it can tightly close the cups, creating a greenhouse effect.

Shoots of adenium

They appear in different ways, depending on the variety, fat, the most common adeniums sprout faster, they can be in three days, and in a week, and sokratranskiye can wait a month.

As soon as the seedlings begin to appear, we move our capacities to the sun itself, but do not lower the temperature until all the seeds have risen. By the way, they are easy to check, because they are almost on the surface. Rake the soil a little and touch the seed, if it is soft, it has already lost its germination.

Of course, you will need to remove the film so that the shoots do not rest on it and do not grow curves. We continue to moisten the shoots from the sprayer, but only when the soil is completely dry, so that the shoots do not begin to deteriorate.

How to care for small adenium

The principle of caring for small seedlings is the same as for adult plants. Differences only in frequent transfers. The fact is that seedlings cannot be transplanted into large containers right away. Tara, that is, the pots need to be gradually increased, as the plants grow. In just a year, adeniums need to be transplanted three times.

The first pickling of the seedlings in individual cups takes place when real leaflets appear. To the plants to develop them immediately put on a bright light. Watering them is not necessary, only to spray the soil to a lightly moisturized. Spraying is carried out only with warm and soft water, you can use spring, rain or snow.

Planted plants begin to actively develop and require food, for a fast set of growth nitrogen-containing fertilizers are needed. During the flowering period, adeniums are fed with potassium-phosphate fertilizers.

All fertilizers for succulents should not be used according to the instructions, but diluted three times more with water.

Feed for these plants need to be made every two to three weeks. In winter, they are generally cleaned and renewed only in early spring, when there is a development and the flower wakes up.

Mature plants do not need frequent transplantation, if in the first year they need to be transplanted three times, the next two years two times, and then they can be transplanted after five years, until the roots get cramped or growth stops, but it is better not to bring them up.

The flower is completely drought-resistant, in the wild sometimes adeniums grow where nothing grows. So if you sometimes forget to water it, it will survive. In spraying the leaves, he also does not need.

The main thing for him is to keep the temperature and provide sunlight, in winter, when he has a period of rest, the light is not so necessary. At this time, adenium can even lose some of the leaves, it is not dangerous and quite natural.

Care and proper maintenance of the house

Adenium home adapts to any conditions of detention. Despite this, this flower is not often found in apartments. Why? People are afraid of its exoticism. Many do not know what kind of care and maintenance adenium needs. In particular, how to water and feed it, how to transplant it and when to prune it.

So, recommendations of experts on care of adenium at home. What kind of soil he needs, when to replant it, how to conduct pruning and feeding. What if adenium sheds leaves, a description of its common diseases.

Content in the apartment

Adenium feels great both under the scorching sun empty and in the humid environment of the tropics. And what kind of care does he need at home?

The key to successful cultivation of adenium flower at home is moderate watering, light and loose soil and a well-lit place on the windowsill. In winter, backlight is required for 14 hours.

Lighting. This is an important parameter in the care of adenium at home. Illumination of the flower should be quite intense. The optimal location of the plant is the windows on the east and south side of the house, where there is no shading from the trees.

In the summer, it is recommended to take the plant to a balcony or a glazed loggia, where, again, there are direct, sunlight. Despite the general opinion that adenium should be pritenyat, practice shows that the plant must be put up for 4-5 hours a day under direct sunlight without any shading.

The rest of the daylight hours the plant needs a lot of bright, diffused light.

Without good lighting, the adult plant Adenium is sparse or does not bloom at all, young flowers slow down their growth.

In winter, you can not clean adenium from the south windows of the house at all. Due to lack of light, the plant does not bloom and looks painful. With a parallel decrease in the level of illumination, temperature and humidity, the plant is retiring. Adenium can partially or completely reset the foliage. It all depends on the type of plant.

Temperature for adenium. The temperature regime in which adenium will be kept at home is closely related to the humidity regime. So, in natural conditions (tropics), the plant easily tolerates temperatures up to +42 degrees, but at the same time, air humidity reaches 90%.

Therefore, at home (in mid-latitudes), with an increase in the average daytime temperature, it is also necessary to increase the humidity of the air. Thus, the maximum temperature at which adenium will feel comfortable in a room in a normal, residential apartment will be +35 degrees.

But in this case it is necessary to keep the moisture regime within 80%. The average daily temperature in ordinary residential premises in mid-latitudes in summer is + 25 ... + 30 degrees. In such conditions, the humidity should be equal to 75-80%.

Although, according to experts, with a decrease in the average temperature of the content of adenium at home, its growth and flowering intensity decrease.

In winter, the average daily temperature in ordinary apartments decreases and is within + 16 ... + 22 degrees. At the same time, the length of daylight decreases.

In such conditions, adenium is sent to rest. The plant partially or completely sheds its leaves.

It is believed that the rest period is simply necessary for the flower, because during this time the flower is gaining strength and grows in the spring with a new force.

It is believed that the optimum temperature for keeping adenium at home in winter is a temperature range of + 12 ... + 16 degrees.

The lower minimum limit of temperatures at which the plant will not die is +10 degrees and necessarily low air humidity.

If the temperature in the room drops below +10 degrees and the humidity of the air remains high, there is a chance that the root system of the flower will rot.

Humidity. There is a pattern: the higher the temperature of the content of adenium at home, the higher should be the humidity.

On the other hand, this plant feels great in the desert, where, along with high temperatures, low humidity. What kind of humidity does adenium need at home? At an average temperature of + 25 ...

+30 degrees humidity should be in the range of 75-80%.

Adeniums are not sprayed. The air humidity in the room where the flower is located is increased as follows: pans with water or moist expanded clay are placed near the flower.

Although, experts recommend arranging the plant light, warm rain on the hottest days. But the rain should be short and only evenings after sunset.

Otherwise, the leaves of the flower will burn in direct sunlight. Water during the "rain" should not fall on the flowers of adenium.

Humidity decreases with decreasing plant temperature. So, adenium can safely winter out at a temperature of + 12 ... + 16 degrees and very low humidity, almost in a dry climate. If the air humidity is high and the temperature is low, the roots of the plant rot.

How to water adenium? Favorable for adenium care at home provides the following mode of watering:

1. Abundant watering every other day. On particularly hot, sunny summer days, the soil in the pot with adenium should be slightly damp. It will favorably affect his well-being. Abundant watering the plant is needed in a period of intensive growth, and it grows when it is hot outside.

2. Moderate watering. The amount of watering is reduced if it is cloudy outside and the temperature is kept within + 20 ... + 22 degrees. The lower the temperature outside, the less watering the flower should be.

In cloudy weather and at a temperature of + 20 ...

+22 degrees (spring-autumn) it is necessary to water adenium 1 time in 5-7 days and only superficially, that is, water only the top layer of the soil without wetting the entire volume of the soil.

The level of soil moisture in the pot can be determined as follows: take an ordinary wooden stick, stick it into the pot in which the flower grows. In autumn and spring, the soil in the pot before the next watering should dry by a third. In the summer - only the top layer of soil should dry out.

3. In winter, at a room temperature of + 16 ... + 20 degrees, watering is very scarce with full drying of the soil in the pot before the next watering.

4. When the heating in the apartment is turned on and the room is warm enough, people wear T-shirts, you need to water adenium once every 5-7 days with a necessarily high level of humidity.

If central heating is turned on, but the apartment is cool enough, then water a flower 1 time in 7-10 days.

In this case, it is impossible for water to come out of the pallet, that is, it is not recommended to completely moisten the earthy clod in a pot with a flower.

It is very important for adenium to observe the following condition: at a room temperature of +20 degrees and below, only surface watering of the soil should be carried out, without full wetting of the soil in the pot. Otherwise there will be an overabundance of moisture and decay of caudex.

Land for adenium. Proper care and maintenance of adenium at home involves the use of nutrient, loose soil. He must pass air and moisture to the roots, prevent the liquid in the pot from stagnating.

Variants of soil mixtures:

  • 1. In any flower shop you can buy a soil mixture for succulents, add inert baking powder there. This may be vermiculite or perlite 20% of the total used soil.
  • 2. Create a soil mixture of your own: coconut fiber (50%), sheet soil (20-30%), perlite and sand of the middle fraction of 10-20%, you can add charcoal.

The overall pH of the soil should equal 5.5-7, that is, be slightly acidic or neutral.

What should not be in the ground for adenium: clay (it interferes with air exchange in the ground), broken bricks (it hurts the roots on it), high percentage of vermiculite, perlite in the ground (leads to over-wetting of the flower roots).

Feed and fertilizer for adenium. To feed adenium with proper care should be in the period of intensive growth (spring and summer) 1 time per month with liquid complex fertilizers.

Adenium Transplant and Pruning

When and how often do adenium transplants take place? An adult plant should preferably be transplanted in the spring before the period of active growth. If necessary, transplantation can be carried out in the summer, but not later than one month before the fall in temperature. Transplantation of adult adenium at home once in 2-3 years.

In addition, each time slightly increasing the volume of the pot, preferably in diameter, and not in depth. If adenium is young, the first transplant is carried out only in the spring, after the plant reaches one year old.

Before the age of 2-3 years, young adenium must be transplanted annually, since the young plant intensively grows the root system.

If adenium is cramped in its pot, it stops growing and it looks painful. However, this is not the main reason why adenium is sick and sheds leaves. It is necessary to pay attention to the proper care and maintenance of the plant at home.

When is adenium pruning done? This is usually done in spring, but before cutting a plant, several factors need to be considered.:

  • 1. Has the flower transplanted, if so, it is pruned no later than 2-3 weeks after transplantation. An important condition is that adenium must restore the work of the root system after transplantation, its leaves must be sufficiently elastic. This means that the roots have recovered from the transplant and are fully functioning.
  • 2. Adenium must come out of rest, that is, start building up new leaves. But there are also several nuances.

According to experts, if the pruning is done too early (the plant is about to leave the rest period), then only one kidney will wake up, which is closest to the top, supposedly remote, bud. As a result, in Adenium after pruning, only one shoot will continue to develop.

If, however, to prune after the plant begins to actively grow the leaves, the probability of awakening of several lateral buds increases significantly.

It is possible to stimulate the development of lateral buds in adenium, and hence its branching, with the help of a cycotinic paste. How to use it can be found in the instructions for the drug.

The height of adenium trim is a personal matter for each grower, but experts also give several recommendations in this regard:

  • 1. If you do not know to which height to cut - the universal option is the height of the remaining branches of 9-12 cm.
  • 2. You must also focus on raising caudex (the root of the flower) above the ground. If you cut adenium very close to the level of the caudex, then the flower will wake up too many small branches, which is not very beautiful for adenium.

New shoots will be formed on the 45-50 day after pruning.

At what age do pruning adenium? Despite the popular belief that pruning adenium should be carried out at the age of 1 year, experts recommend to focus on the condition and size of the flower itself.

So, with proper care and proper maintenance, adenium is ready for pruning in the second year of its life. If the plant is weak, that is, it has not grown a sufficiently wide stem and a developed root system, then it is better to postpone the trimming.

The wider the place of the environment (trimming) in adenium, the higher the probability of the awakening of a greater number of sleeping buds.

Diseases of adenium. Why does adenium shed its leaves?

The leaves turn yellow if adenium either goes to bed or falls ill. If adenium is sent to rest, the leaves dry and fall off gradually. And this happens when the average daily temperature drops, that is, in the fall. The plant remains completely or partially without foliage - it all depends on the type of plant.

Paradoxically, but with the onset of autumn, adenium can be poured. And the first sign of over-wetting adenuyam and, therefore, rotting of its root system is leaf fall.

So, if adenium leaves turn yellow and fall, it is necessary to pay attention to the state of its root system and caudex. They can be rotten.

However, it should be remembered that a healthy, at first, plant from an excess of moisture in the pot, can rot the stem and roots. In this case, it is recommended to reduce the soil moisture in the pot. If the plant is an adult, then it can independently overcome the disease.

If leaves fall off in young adenium (seedlings from 1 to 2 years old), then caudex should be cut to healthy tissue, and the rest should be rooted.

Leaves dry if adenium is moisture deficient in the hot season. In this case, his caudex may shrink.

It was first discovered near the city of Aden (hence the name "adenium").

Therefore, until recently, in our latitudes adenium could be observed exclusively on the territory of some botanical garden - care is needed rather specific, although simple, so it can be grown at home.

General description of the plant

In addition to the common name, adenium is often called:

  • desert rose
  • Impala Lily,
  • star of Sabinia
  • rose of the succulent world
  • obesum and so on.

In its natural habitat, this plant is not afraid of the dry period and the scorching rays of the sun, which burn out all life around.

There have been cases when adenium grew on such stony soil where no other plant could grow! However, adenium feels best in the humid and warm environment of the tropics, where it can reach very large sizes not only in the height of the trunk (up to 3 meters), but also in its thickness (up to 1.5 meters in diameter).

Since the plant is poisonous, the care lies in the fact that it is necessary to protect it from children and pets!

Adenium species

Currently, seven of its ornamental species are known, among which only four are the most popular with adenium lovers:

Abesum (obese). This species is most often grown at home, because at the end of spring magnificent large (up to 7 centimeters in diameter) flowers of pink or red bloom on it. Caring for such adenium is not difficult. Even if you do not water it for a long time, the plant will not suffer, because it can accumulate a significant amount of moisture.

Arab. In its appearance, this variety is closest to wild adenium. Its shape can be very diverse, but always undersized. Flowering bright pink flowers lasts from early spring until its end. In this species, in contrast to the abesum, there is a pronounced period of rest, during which the plant may even shed some of its leaves.

Socotransky. This type of adenium is a dwarf, which has very beautiful leaves, painted in green with a silvery shade or painted in bare-green. During its flowering period, Socotransky adenium will delight its host with soft pink or bright red flowers.

Somali. This is the largest type of decorative adenium, which can reach very large sizes. However, the first flowers on it may appear already at the age of one and a half, when the plant has a height of only about 15 centimeters. Despite the large size of the plant, the flowers of the Somali Adenium are almost half the size of the species abesum. However, with good sunlight, this species can form flowers on its trunk all year round, thus ensuring its continuous flowering!

How to care?

Since the plant, as mentioned earlier, is unpretentious to the conditions of detention, the care of him comes down to fulfilling the simplest requirements.

It is necessary that Adenium is standing on the window, located on the south side of the room or on the balcony (in the summer time), which is well heated by the sun. However, make sure that direct sunlight hits the plant for no longer than 4 hours, because, otherwise, excessive ultraviolet will cause adenium burn.

It is not required to water the plant abundantly. If it is inside the room, then care is that it needs to be watered less often than it is on the open balcony.

At the same time, it is necessary to constantly ensure that during rain the water does not over-wet the soil in the pot, which will lead to rotting of the roots and death of the plant. The next watering should be done only when the soil in the pot is completely dry.

With the onset of spring, it is necessary to begin watering adenium, which was at rest. And it should be done carefully and with a small amount of water, spilling it at the edges of the pot, and not at the stem of the plant.

During the period of active growth, adenium requires regular spraying, which must be stopped as soon as it blooms.

Adenium, home care for which we are considering, should include a drainage layer, which should be laid on the bottom of the pot, and then covered with a small layer of fertilized subacidic soil.

Taking care of adenium at home also consists in the fact that in winter, when the plant is at rest, it must be maintained at a temperature of +7 C to +15 C. At this time, the plant can not be watered at all.

Fertilization in the root soil of a plant should be carried out only from March to September (1 time per month). At the same time, the concentration of the fertilizer solution should be reduced by a factor of 2-3 from that recommended by the manufacturer.

Like any plant, adenium requires periodic pruning. A feature of this stage of care for adenium at home is that it should be done very carefully, because the juice of the plant is very poisonous!

Pruning is done throughout the vegetative development of the plant. With its help, the desired shape of the plant is formed: if you like single-stem adeniums, the processes and trunk itself must be cut to one-third of their length, and if desired, bush stem plants need to be trimmed, and the processes must be cut as low as possible.

How to transplant adenium?

After you bring adenium, bought in a flower shop home (it’s best to do it in the spring), it needs to be transplanted to a pot with another soil.

However, until the plant is old enough, it requires an annual transplant.

An adult plant is transplanted into another pot only when necessary, when the root system will no longer fit into the volumes of the old pot.

To transplant adenium you need:

  • Correctly pick a pot. If the plant is young, then the pot should be quite deep, since the roots of such a plant will grow in depth. And for an adult plant the pot is chosen shallow, but wide, since the roots of such a plant will develop in breadth.
  • Properly prepare the primer. For planting adenium is well suited mixture of turf land, leaf earth and river sand (everything is taken in equal parts).

After transplantation, you should not immediately water the soil. It is necessary to let the roots dry for 3-4 days, and only then moisten the soil.

How to propagate adenium?

Adenium can be propagated at home in various ways.

This is not a very reliable option, because the seeds during storage can lose their germination.

Before landing in the ground in late February and early March, they must first be soaked for half an hour in a solution of manganese-potassium (manganese), and then soaked for several hours in a warm aqueous solution of zircon.

For planting seeds, it is necessary to prepare soil from a mixture of vermiculite, charcoal and sand. After moistening the substrate, the seedlings are immersed in the ground, but they are not buried, but only slightly sprinkled.

Then the container must be placed for a week in greenhouse conditions, where the ambient air temperature will be maintained at +32 - +35 C. After emergence, they must be regularly aired, and the temperature of the container can be reduced to +18 C. Once the plants appear two pairs of petals, saplings dive into separate pots.

Propagation by cuttings

Planting cuttings can be both in spring and summer. The cut stalk (its length should be 10-15 cm) is poured with charcoal and dried.

Then it should be planted in a pot filled with a mixture of charcoal and sand, and put in a place where the ambient temperature will not fall below +25 C.

Do not overmoisten the substrate, as this will lead not to the formation of the adenium root system, but to the decay of the cutting!

Possible problems with growing adenium

Sometimes the plant begins to turn yellow and shed its leaves. There may be several reasons for this:

  • too dry air
  • too low ambient temperature
  • draft.

If an adult adenium does not bloom, then it just needs to be transplanted into the right soil and pruning, which, by the way, will give the plant the most bizarre shape!

Care of adenium seedlings

When the seedlings grow several leaves, they should be transplanted. In adenium, transplanting seedlings after germination during the year should be done about three times, as they grow. Planted adenium from seeds begins to bloom in a couple of years. Care of seedlings, as well as for all plants.

When to feed adenium seedlings

It is necessary to feed up once a month with mineral and organic liquid fertilizers. This should be done during active growth and during flowering. In order to achieve lush leaves, you must first apply fertilizer with nitrogen in the spring. The duration of flowering can be extended with the addition of phosphorus or potassium.

Pruning adenium at home

For the formation of adenium roots, the so-called caudex, with each transplanting it is necessary to slightly raise it. But not too high above the ground, because it can stop its development because of this.

You can form adenium at home. In adenium, crown formation is not always the final result, the result you expected. For this you should be patient. Juveniles simply pinch, and with adult adeniums, the trunk is formed with trimming.

Adenium species

Currently, several hybrid varieties of this unusual plant have been developed, which differ in size and shape of leaves, and color of flowers.

  • Adenium Crispum. The leaves have an elongated elongated shape, the leaf edges are wavy. Most of the thickening of the trunk is in the ground. Flowering begins in late spring. Petals of flowers are painted in pale yellow color near the center, which gradually turns into a bright pink or crimson hue.
  • Dorset horn. A very rare variety of adenium, which is practically not cultivated. The tree has an unusual shape of leaves that resemble the horns of a lamb. If the flower growers decide to pay attention to this variety, then it should be noted that the tree is bred only by cuttings, because when they are propagated in another way, the leaves lose their decorative effect.
  • Adenium fat or adenium obesum - the most popular plant variety. Adenium obesum is very unpretentious in the care. Flowering Adenium fat begins in the second year after planting. Adenium obesum is grown for its long rapid flowering. Special attention of gardeners attracts a variety of adenium obese Adenium obesum Pink. In the dormant period, adenium obeseum can throw off foliage. In the spring with the beginning of the growing season, flowers first appear on the adenium tree and only then leaves appear.

Flowers Adenium Obesum may vary in various colors. There are hybrid species with white, red, black and two-color petals. Flowers in shape. may be terry or simple. The color of the leaves can also be varied: green, yellow, red, with a border.

The special properties of the plant

Gardeners should be aware that the juice of the plant is poisonous, so all manipulations with the plant are best carried out with gloves.

If the house has small children or pets, then adenium should be placed at a safe height.

Adeniums: home care

The plant does not require the creation of additional conditions of maintenance and is very simple in the care of the house. In order for the tree to enjoy an unusual appearance and bright colors for a long time, you should know the basic rules for growing and caring at home.

  • Lighting and location

Adenium la bright light is loved. With insufficient light, the plant stops growing and stops blooming. Oriental windows with diffused lighting are more suitable for cultivation. Under direct sunlight on the southern windows, the plant begins to turn yellow and crumble. If you can not create a diffused lighting, the plant can be pritenit.

  • Temperature

The period of active growth and the period of rest is characteristic of adenium. To transfer a flower from one state to another should be gradual. The optimum temperature for growing is 20-22 degrees in the summer and at least 15 degrees in the winter. The most dangerous for the flower is low temperature and high humidity.

  • Watering plants and moisture

The plant tolerates moisture deficiency.. In order for the flower to retain its decorative qualities, it should be watered a lot and abundantly in the summer and kept to a minimum in the winter.

Irrigation mode also depends on weather conditions: it decreases at low temperatures and increases on hot days. Excess moisture is dangerous for the plant. The flower is easier to tolerate the lack of water than waterlogging. For irrigation, you should use pure water without admixture of chlorine and odor.

An adult tree is not sprayed. Spraying and a warm shower is only important for young plants. During flowering spraying stop, because water can get on the inflorescences, which will lead to their rotting.

Pruning plants

With the help of pruning you can form a beautiful tree crown. If done correctly, adenium will look like a bonsai. Trimming is done in early spring.. The lower the plant will be cut, the more it will give new shoots. Young shoots can be intertwined and thinned.

In order to make the caudex higher, you can raise it slightly above the ground level or set it at a slight angle. In this case, the branches will straighten slightly, and the thickening will take on an unusual appearance.

Plant transplant and soil

After purchase, the plant must be given a few days to adapt. In the fall, a flower can shed its leaves.

Transplantation is carried out in the spring before the beginning of the period of active growth.. For an adult plant, transplantation takes place as the plant grows.

For young plants requires a deep pot, because the roots of the plants are actively developing and require a lot of space. For an adult tree, a wider capacity is suitable, as the root system develops to the sides.

Adenium needs a loose, nourishing, moisture-permeable soil. For planting, you can use ready-made soil mixtures, in which charcoal, coconut fiber, expanded clay and perlite should be added. If the necessary components are missing, add crushed bricks. After landing, adenium is not watered. The roots of the plant should dry for 3-5 days.

Usually, an adult tree is transplanted once every five years.

Formation of the crown and trunk

Many species of adeniums allow a large number of shoots and form a beautiful crown on their own. If this does not happen, then the top of the tree pinch. In an adult tree, lateral branches can be pruned.

Decorative thickening form, splicing together the trunks of several plants. Shoots are planted in one pot and fastened with adhesive tape. After three months, their cuadex are cut with a sharp knife, which will accelerate healing. After pruning, the plants are again fastened with adhesive tape. A month later, it is removed. Between trunks should not be free space or soil.

Growing problems

When growing adenium at home, florists may experience some difficulties.

Very often the plant does not bloom. This may be due to the lack of timely pruning or improper plant content in the dormant period.

Falling and yellowing of the leaves can be observed if the plant grows in an improperly composed soil mixture, the root system is affected by diseases, the irrigation regime of the plant is disturbed, and the plant is contained in a draft.

Adenium at home

Adenium content - temperature . Choose a place with a temperature of no more than 35 ° C., in winter the content is cooler, but not lower than 15 ° C. Houseplants respond well to a difference in daily temperatures, but they do not tolerate frosts.

Growing conditions - lighting . These home plants require a lot of sunlight for proper development. If they grow in poorly lit areas, they become thin and develop less bright flowers. Direct sun can burn foliage. In the autumn and winter months, additional exposure to fluorescent fluorescent or phytolamps is possible, since at this time flower buds are formed.

Please note that caudex (stem base) is very much at risk of sunburn. Shade the base of the plant.

Care, trimming. Growing adeniums at home is more likely under the power of non-professionals. Succulent, which in the winter need warmth and proper formation of the crown. If you create favorable conditions for him, then in the summer on a sunny window-sill he will bloom with beautiful large flowers. How to form a plant? The formation of the trunk begins at a very early age and consists of pinching young shoots. Crown plants are formed in such a way as to obtain the maximum number of side shoots. The formation of thick caudex also contributes to trimming the root system of the plant. Remember that fresh wounds should be treated with disinfectant solutions for better healing. After pruning plants do not bloom so abundantly - because the flower buds are laid on the shoots of last year. Flowering can be stimulated by planting a small drought for 2 to 3 weeks. Адениум оценит пребывание на свежем воздухе в теплое время года под укрытием от сильного ветра, прямых солнечных лучей и дождя. Растения могут сбросить часть или даже всю листву если их содержат в прохладном помещении в период покоя.

Soil for growing adeniums . We need a very porous, well-drained substrate, with a slightly acidic or neutral pH. Coarse sand or fine gravel should make up approximately 50 percent of the soil. As a top layer, it is better to surround caudex with small stones or coarse sand in order to avoid rotting.

Top dressing adenium . When growing use fertilizers with a high nitrogen content (or balanced), feed every 2 weeks, the plants respond well to top dressing! For the formation of a large caudex and the onset of flowering, the amount of nitrogen in the soil is reduced and fertilizers with a high content of potassium and phosphorus should be used. During the rest period, feeding is stopped.

Purpose Adeniums are beautiful flowers that are often used to form a bonsai tree, and an attractive flowering tree can be formed relatively quickly - in just 5 years. Sometimes adenium is planted in small bowls in order to open its large and attractive root system.

Blooming adenium . Most hybrids and species begin to bloom in spring, when heat and light day increases. Many bloom all fall and winter. A flowering plant is very effective, with proper care it can bloom 2 times a year. For the first time flowering may occur at the age of 1.5 - 2 years.

Air humidity . High, regular spraying needed. In autumn and winter, when the weather outside the window overcast humidity of the air is not worth it. Spraying is carried out only in the morning so that the moisture can evaporate from the surface of the leaves before dark. If necessary, you can use a room humidifier.

Watering adenium . Adenium is a desert plant and it tolerates drought easily. The frequency of watering depends on the soil in the pot. Trees are watered daily only on very hot summer days. If the flower Adenium grows in a warm room, where the temperature above 15 ° C should be watered regularly, even during the winter months. Allow the soil to dry out between watering - softened caudex will speak about the need for regular watering. With the arrival of spring, watering increases. If the plant is repeatedly exposed to prolonged drought, it may fall into a dormant period.

Adenium Transplant . Planting in fresh soil is carried out as needed - a powerful root system can even break the pot. In a close pot, adenium slows its growth, blooms reluctantly with small flowers. When transplanting young plants in the spring, often the roots and the top are cut a little obliquely - it is believed that this helps them form a large caudex. The central root can be cut almost to the base, and sprinkle with crushed coal on the cut. After landing in a new ground, watering is stopped for about a week. Avoid too deep pots - many trees should be planted in shallow bowls in order to open an attractive root system for everyone to see, and thicker and rounded ones will be formed in shallow containers of caudex. Adenium pot should have large drainage holes for outflow of excessive moisture after watering.

Breeding . It is possible to grow from seeds, but this is a fairly long process. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the maturity of the seeds - the pods should dry naturally. Seeds should also be fresh, germination occurs within 3 to 5 days at a temperature of at least 26 ° C, germination is good. Before sowing, seeds are soaked in warm water with growth stimulants for several hours. Young plants are grown only in small containers with large drainage holes under a cover of glass or plastic film. The crops are ventilated daily for several minutes and the condensate is removed.

How to root a plant. Propagation by cuttings must be accompanied by the use of bottom heating. The cuttings are pre-treated with rooting powders and placed in a mixture of perlite and vermiculite. It is worth remembering that plants obtained from cuttings often do not form caudex. Succulents also multiply with the help of grafts - flowers of various shades appear on one plant.

Pests and diseases of adenium . Spider mites can occur on leaves and branches. They are extremely harmful, to prevent their occurrence, it is important to remove old and damaged leaves in a timely manner, to ventilate the room with the plant well.

Mealybugs suck out juice and nutrients from plants and usually become the main cause of slow growth. However, they are easily removed by strong water pressure.

When it is too wet and cool, the plant may rot, especially in the first winter, while the leaves turn yellow and the roots suffer greatly. The rotted parts are cut, the cut is treated with blue and re-rooting is carried out. Deformed, twisted leaves indicate the presence of a virus in the plant. Adenium does not bloom in the absence of a period of rest or in low light.

Note . Be very careful with the sap of the plant, as it is poisonous, it is worth protecting the plant from pets and children. With proper care, these plants are able to live for more than one hundred years even in indoor conditions.

Hydroponics. Adeniums can be grown hydroponically.

Summing up - 7 secrets of success:

  1. Growing temperature: summer - 20 - 35 ° C, winter - preferably at a temperature of about 15 ° C.
  2. Lighting: direct sunlight in the morning and evening during the spring and summer, in the autumn and winter provide the most lighted location. Caudex needs shading.
  3. Watering and humidity: the frequency of watering depends on the temperature of the content, remember that the plant has a reserve of water in caudex.
  4. Pruning: needs a very competent formative pruning.
  5. Priming: with high sand content and neutral or acidic pH.
  6. Top dressing: only during the growth period - with mineral fertilizers for succulent plants.
  7. Breeding: seeds.

How to trim adenium

Pruning in adenium is, the larger the diameter of the shoots, the more it is necessary to make the area of the slice, and this promises many new stems at the place of the slice. Form pruned crown near Adenium, because you would like to see your plant in your interior.

It is necessary to take into account the fact that if adenium is cut too low, then the plant will grow the wrong thin stems. The best period for pruning is the beginning of active growth. In place of the cut, new branches appear within a month and a half.

In adenium, pruning is real art. Proper formation of the roots will give your plant exotic. Root pruning must be done on adult plants.

There are many interesting formations. One of these is when adenium is planted on a round plate, thanks to which, the root system grows apart like an octopus.

The roots must be fixed in the desired position with the help of sticks or toothpicks.

Adenium lighting at home

Adeniums are light-requiring, unlike most houseplants, they do not need shading and feel best on the south and east side.

In summer, the more sun they get, the greater the flowering will be, the denser and healthier the crown will be. In winter conditions do not change, but if there is not enough light, then the shadow can be partially compensated by maintaining the temperature within 15 ° C or by long-lasting illumination.

Striving for the sun, room adeniums lean towards the window. Return the crown beauty can turn the flower. Over time, the stem straightens up again.

The light regime for adenium, which comes from the equatorial zone of the planet, is desirable to maintain close to natural values. That is, from autumn to spring, in order for the plant to receive light for 12–14 hours, it will need light.

Pruning and shaping adenium

To make the crown thick, branched, growers resort to the formation and pruning adenium.

Often this is simply necessary, since in many plants the apical development is dominant and does not allow other sprouts to develop except the central one.

Removing the apex activates dormant lateral buds and triggers branching. As a result of such pruning at home on adenium:

  • the amount of foliage increases
  • more buds are laid,
  • the crown is leveled, bulky and dense.

Usually, after pruning, more than three buds wake up, and the thicker the cut stalk, the thicker the growth of hemp along the edge is.

Also pruning adenium at home is used to rejuvenate adult plants, part of the branches of which noticeably weakens with age. It is carried out with a frequency of two years, shortening shoots to 5–8 cm.

Adenium caudex formation

Adenium - a rare plant that allows the grower to form not only the aboveground, but also the underground part. Pruning and shaping adenium caudex allows the grower to grow incredible specimens.

The flower is extremely “loyal” to all the manipulations of a person who can twist the roots, cut off some of them, or completely remove the bottom of the plant to grow a new root system of a given shape.

Most often on the basis of adenium form bonsai like a mangrove. For this:

  • choose a grown seedling with a thick stem base,
  • the root of the plant at the site of the narrowing of the caudex is cut off,
  • the stalk is rooted again in water or a loose mixture of perlite and vermiculite.

When the plant gets roots again, it is transferred to a wide pot, on a light soil for adenium. Under the handle is placed a previously prepared round plate made of thick plastic. The roots straighten and fix to give the desired shape. Then the roots of one or two centimeters sprinkled with soil.

Care after such a formation of adenium caudex consists in more frequent, usually moderate watering and regular checking of the position of the roots. To do this, the plant is transplanted twice a year, straightening rhizomes and removing unnecessary.
