Juniper - planting material

Junipers are grown from seeds. Germination takes a lot of time. Therefore, most homeowners buy small shrubs and trees from a local garden nursery or center. You can buy hundreds of species of living trees, bushes and shrubs with an open or closed root system.

How to grow juniper

For cultivation of juniper will not need high operating costs. The process of growing a culture is quite quick and easy. The plant needs regular sunshine and well-drained soil. Drought-resistant plants do not like wet soil. They may die from over-irrigation. Juniper can grow in soils of different composition. Preference should be given to slightly acidic soil.

You can learn the features of cultivation from the video:

Planting a plant

As with any other shrub or tree, you must:

  1. Dig a hole about twice the size of the earthy coma with rhizome.
  2. Put garden compost or mowed grass at the bottom.
  3. Carefully remove the plant root system from the container.
  4. Set the plant in the hole.
  5. Carefully loosen the ground around the outer part of the roots.
  6. Then pour enough water. Regularly moisturize the seedling should be 2-3 times a week over the next two months.
  7. Around the plant to scatter the mulch to contain weeds and maintain a neat appearance.

Additional fertilizer is not necessary, except for the poorest soils. The plant tolerates drought well. Therefore, watering it after rooting is necessary only after a long absence of precipitation.

Replant juniper should be in the fall. If you perform the procedure in the spring - the rhizome is injured. Dry and damaged parts may not recover. It is especially dangerous to change the landing site to adult conifers.

Form and structure

The plant can be used to create bonsai. In this case, you will need special skills for a complete structural change of the tree trunk with wire, garden shears and tub capacity.

As a rule, the plant in the period of development independently acquires a beautiful form. Regularly cutting culture in the summer is necessary if it is used as a fence. In late April - early May, dry branches and damaged side shoots can be removed. Veres, which is used to produce dwarf miniatures, must be adjusted twice a year - in late spring and early autumn.

The plant rarely infects insects. Problems can arise from such pests:

  • winged pine moth,
  • scythes,
  • gall midges,
  • aphids
  • ants.

You can get rid of insects with insecticides, or by growing special repellent plants for ants (for example, parsley). In addition, it is necessary to regularly engage in weeding and apply chemical means of prophylaxis.

Juniper Diseases

The plant suffers from several types of diseases:

  1. Tracheomycous wilt or fusarium.
  2. Redness of the needles.
  3. Shyutte brown.
  4. Alternaria
  5. Rust.
  6. Biaterellic cancer.
  7. Nectriosis of the cortex.

All these diseases cause a variety of fungi. To preserve the appearance of the culture, it is necessary to avoid overwetting the soil. Veres also grows poorly and is exposed to infection in a shaded area.

What plants are suitable for decorating any garden, while not requiring complex care? Unpretentious junipers! With their help, you can even implement complex design ideas, because juniper is a combination of elegant forms, plasticity and bright color! One of the best varieties is Old Gold Juniper. His golden foliage and flat crown adorns the garden throughout the year! We offer to get acquainted with the peculiarities of growing this coniferous bush.

Pit preparation

From the correct preparation of the seat depends on the rate of survival of the seedling. The best option is to prepare the pit in the fall, and plant the seedlings in the spring. During this time, the earth will drain, the bottom will be formed.

The diameter of the pit should be twice the size of the earthy coma, in depth - 60-80 cm. At the bottom of a layer of 15-20 cm pour drainage - sand with brick battle or rubble.

Finishing work

At the final stage, the soil is mulched around the trunk. To do this, suitable leaf humus, wet peat, pine bark, compost.

Mulch is poured in a layer of 10-12 cm - this is enough to protect the roots from overheating in the summer, freezing in frost, and the growth of weeds. When watering, the soil will not thicken and sag, which is important for young junipers.

Departure after landing

In the period when the Old Gold juniper sapling takes root in a new place, you need to create the most comfortable conditions for it:

  • In the first 1-1.5 weeks after planting, the ground under a young plant should be regularly moistened.
  • Do not water young junipers from a hose, as you will stretch the mulch and can damage the roots. The water must first settle and warm in the sun.
  • To avoid burns and drying of the needles in the hot time of the day it is desirable to do shading.
  • Spray during the dry season, but do it carefully so as not to smash the branches with the pressure. The best time for this is early morning and evening twilight.
  • If the bush "Old Gold" is rooted, but grows too slowly, apply fertilizer: ready-made fertilizers for junipers, diluted according to the instructions.

Note: first-year bushes must always be warmed before wintering. For this purpose, both modern covering materials and spruce branches are suitable.

General rules of care

The juniper variety “Old Gold” belongs to unpretentious cultures, but you shouldn’t leave it aside either. Basically, care is reduced to three positions: water, feed, trim:

  1. Watering. This species does not tolerate an excess, or even worse, the stagnation of moisture in the soil. Excessive moisture can cause root rot. Adult specimens are watered only during drought, no more than 2-3 times during the growing season.
  2. Fertilizers. Junipers are among those crops that are better underfeeding than overfeeding. For this reason, mineral fertilizers are applied once a year in spring, as soon as the snow melts. For this purpose, I recommend using ready-made complex feeding, designed for junipers.
  3. A haircut. Sanitary pruning is carried out in the spring, while removing all the dried twigs. Due to the slow growth of juniper, the molding haircut is carried out very carefully. It is important to shear only protruding shoots, without touching the skeletal branches.

An important point: never fertilize juniper with manure - it can oversupply the soil, cause burn roots and, as a result, crown deformation. If it is imperative to increase soil fertility, use humus obtained from manure.

Juniper "Old Gold" does not like very dry air, so once a week it is useful to carry out sprinkling. To do this, use a special nozzle on the hose. It is necessary to spray bushes in the evening or in the early morning when there is no active sun.

Mature plants tolerate wintering in temperate and northern latitudes, and therefore do not need hiding. For even arousal in the spring, spend abundant watering with sprinkling of the crown.

What can threaten the juniper "Old Gold"

Representatives of the cypress family are sufficiently resistant to diseases and pests, since they produce phytoncides. However, they can not always resist the influence of external factors. The following phenomena are most dangerous for the Old Gold variety:

  • Heavy snow + frost. At low temperatures, branches become brittle and can break under the weight of a snow cap. Therefore, in such weather it is advisable to shake off the snow.
  • Spring burns. At the end of winter, the sun becomes noticeably more active, and the roots remain frozen and cannot feed the needles with water. As a result, it turns yellow and dries. There are two solutions to this problem: priten the shrub with a covering material and warm the ground by watering it abundantly with warm water.
  • Rust. The disease causes the appearance of orange growths on young and skeletal branches.
  • Shrinking branches. Manifested by yellowing, dropping of needles, drying of thin twigs.

The affected juniper branches are cut out and destroyed, the rest are treated with fungicides ("Early", "Ridomil", etc.). It is also important to disinfect the soil.

Where better to buy a sapling

In order not to have to treat the shrub immediately after purchase, do not purchase seedlings from questionable sellers. If you are looking for the “Old Gold” variety, in specialized garden centers you will be offered exactly this, and not a non-categorized juniper.

In addition, the plants there are grown and sold in containers with already applied fertilizers, which will be enough seedling for a whole year.
